THE JAM - THE ETON RIFLES

Sup up your beer and collect your fags -
There's a row going on down near Slough.
Get out your mat and pray to the West.
I'll get out mine and pray for myself.

Thought you were smart when you took them on,
But you didn't take a peep in their artillery room.
All that rugby puts hairs on your chest.
What chance have you got against a tie and a crest?

Hello-Hurrah - what a nice day for the Eton Rifles.
Hello-Hurrah - I hope rain stops play for the Eton Rifles.

Thought you were clever when you lit the fuse,
Tore down the house of commons in your brand new shoes,
Composed a revolutionary symphony,
Then went to bed with a charming young thing.

Hello-Hurrah - cheers then, mate. It's the Eton Rifles.
Hello-Hurrah - an extremist scrape with the Eton Rifles.

What a catalyst you turned out to be:
Loaded the guns, then you run off home for your tea -
Left me standing like a guilty schoolboy...

What a catalyst you turned out to be:
Loaded the guns, then you run off home for your tea -
Left me standing like a naughty schoolboy...

We came out of it naturally the worst:
Beaten and bloody, and I was sick down my shirt.
We were no match for their untamed wit,
Though some of the lads said they'd be back next week.

Hello-Hurrah - it's the price to pay to the Eton Rifles.
Hello-Hurrah - I'd prefer the plague to the Eton Rifles.

Hello-Hurrah - it's the price to pay to the Eton Rifles.
Hello-Hurrah - I'd prefer the plague to the Eton Rifles.

It is 10pm on May Day, and just as the polling stations are closing, Paul Weller leans conspiratorially across the restaurant table. "I'm going to play 'Eton Rifles' tomorrow night," he whispers with a hint of pride. "The time is right again, don't you think?" As we talk at a quiet trattoria in a central London side street, a Boris Johnson victory is looking inevitable. "I thought I'd never play that song again, but it's just as powerful now, just as relevant, as it was in 1979."

A mash-up of The Specials' "Ghost Town" and The Jam's "Going Underground."  Since you're not working on the new Amy Winehouse album anymore, how about getting on it ASAP, Mark Ronson?

I love any editorial that's labeled "Bring in the Water Cannons."

I mean, this is very serious.  And I don't want to make light of a serious situation.  But two things:

1.) Only two people died in all of this?  Tragic and all, but just two!?!?  Two people dying in America is just getting warmed up

2.) I told you nothing good would come of listening to Lily Allen and The Streets....

I listened to Cock Sparrer all day yesterday, even though they're Hammers.

For the uninitiated, I would suggest the following:

British independent music labels said Wednesday they had suffered a "disaster" after rioters torched a Sony-owned distribution centre in London and destroyed their entire CD stocks. ....  But it also houses stock for around 150 independent music labels such as XL and Domino, who are behind acts including Grammy-winning British singer Adele and rockers Arctic Monkeys.

"This is a disaster for the music community," said Alison Wenham, who chairs Britain's Association of Independent Music.

i fear the evictions will only make things worse.  the rioters are already marginalized from society & don't see a future for themselves.  they're generally poor and won't be able to afford non-subsidized housing.  if you think those people are angry now, just wait 'til they're homeless.

on the other hand, they won't be able to afford so many cell phone so maybe that will discourage the organization of riots through social media.
