I remember the many shows I attended at 930 F street from 1983 to about 1990... And I do recall somone video taping all the shows... It was usually some freaky looking chick caged up into the shallow ceiling of the club... Anyway... Are any of these videos for sale ? I would love to get my hands on some old 9353 shows... or that Suicidal Tendencies show I went to in 1985...
-
i've never heard of anyone selling videos from the old 930. it's never been mentioned on this board as far as i know.
-
shit ya! open up the vaults!!!!!
I'll take the Jeff Buckley show I was at for starters...
-
Where are all the viedoes ? Lost in a fire ?... Someone must know the answer to this question
-
I thought I read somewhere that there weren't nearly as many videos as you'd think. Most of the video was just for the in-house tvs and not really archived. I find that a bit hard to believe, but that's what I remember hearing.

wow... whoever owned the 930 in the 80's missed out on a huge oppurtunity..

Unfortunately there is no lost video archive. The video person in the camera chair was shooting a live feed, not a recording, so the show could be seen on the TV screens placed around the club, to improve visibility since the sightlines weren't great. We offered the bands the opportunity to purchase a video tape of their show, for the cost of the tape and with the understanding that whatever the camera person shot was what they got...psychedelic effects, sideways camera angles and all. So any recordings of shows on F St that may exist are in the hands of the bands who purchased them. Personally I would love to see a video of that Bad Brains "I Against I" tour show, but we don't have one.
-
Well I guess I will contact bruce merkle to see if he has any those 9353 videos lying around...
-
That sounds like a threat brianmayeux.

A big horny sexy threat.

terribly shortsighted of artists not to have paid for blank videotape.. what did that cost? $2?
I wonder what percentage of acts paid for a copy.. pretty priceless footage
-
it was a 3/4" tape not a VHS. Or a Beta for that matter. The video feed ran through the 3/4 tape deck. Those tapes cost more like $50, which was a lot for bands on the road back then. You also have to remember, video was a new technology and was not ubiquitous like it is now. I don't think anyone really realized how thoroughly video would permeate our society. Also the sound was crap on those things, there was no audio production set up since it was strictly for visual purposes, so you got whatever the camera mic picked up from the PA.

it wasn't the club's opportunity to take. they would have needed the band's permission to keep a copy, i.e. would have had to pay the band and work out distribution rights. which club owner would fork over hundred or thousands of dollars for the rights to mostly unproven bands? while you might be willing to pay a lot now, i don't blame club owners back then for concentrating on more immediate concerns. the home video market was emerging at the time, it was not the behemoth that it is today.

bands have an interest in not allowing too much of their show to leave the venue - it depresses the value of future performances, according to some. same reason why you can't video record (and sometimes even photograph) shows today.
and even if a deal was made - club sells tape to band, or band sells tape to club - it would be a court case waiting to happen unless they signed a contract, which i doubt they were doing at the time.
-
thanks twangirl (and the original poster)
very interesting for sure
-
sweetcell... thanks for the response... its a shame because now everyone is losing out... 930, the bands, and most of all the fans...
-
it always cracks me up- in a sad way- when an artist or band that is against video at shows then proceeds to link to youtube videos of their shows..
legalize it and i will advertise it..
anyways, i don't give a shit.. if i'm at a show i'm filming.

I don't dispute this statement... but if anyting youtube has sparked more desire to see bands live than not... A prime example is that I never even considered seeing the Greatful Dead back when they were together... after seeing a bunch of youtube videos, I regret not ever seeing them...
That is just one example...

On a somewhat related note, I did come across a decent recording (audio) of the Birthday Party's last American show which happened to be at the club recently if anybody is interested.

Top 3 missed show of my life. You have no idea how it pains me.
Shame that those tapes aren't circulating. I am, however, amazed that there are amateur films of at least a handful of shows. The 2-cam recording of Rage Against the Machine is the only one I own. I guess they had the band's permission to tape that show? Seems that the club has almost always frowned on that.

what is this video you speak of? does the recording have a name, so i can track it down?
i know RATM played the new club, did they play F street as well?
-
That vid is on Dime, I think.
Yup. http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=346346
Setlist:
1. PEOPLE OF THE SUN
2. BOMBTRACK
3. FISTFUL OF STEEL
4. WAKE UP
5. SETTLE FOR NOTHING
6. MORELLO JAM
7. BULLET IN THE HEAD
8. KILLING IN THE NAME
9. FREEDOM
Looks like there are three different sources.
-
The 2 cam is absolutely superb. One shot from right at the stage, another shot from the back left (where the other shows that I've seen were shot). The copy circulating comes from the master tapes, I believe. 1st generation at worst.
People of the sun had not been released, obviously, so the lyrics are different.

haven't you guys ever heard of theatre of the mind. you see it live . . . you know, live. "it's not a clone, it's not a fake, it's just fucking live, man!" and that is what you get to remember and know it was special and you were there and that person wasn't. recordings are for the needy.

Haven't you ever heard of hard drugs and alcohol.... you know I did a bunch... but I am clean now... Needy... yes, in need of some reminding...

Thank god the Rites of Spring Revolution Summer show was filmed and circulated.
-
And from the new location, what ever happened with the videos that they were doing there for a while? Does NPR still occasionally record shows too?
-
Does NPR still occasionally record shows too?
they definitely still do audio-only - most recent was bon iver (http://www.npr.org/2011/08/04/138890247/live-tuesday-bon-iver-in-concert). no video, tho.
-
Yeah, it was someone else who did the video shows, did it at Fletchers too. Glad NPR is still doing it, love the Spiritualized show they recorded.
-
i was told someone was video recording shows at 930 a couple of years ago with multiple mounted robo cameras and putting them on the web. i never did find the site for the recordings. i think the robo mounts are still up at the club.
-
what is to become of the video of the 930 30th anniversary show?
-

Did you ever get an answer to this? I have a vague memory of just stopping by F Street one night to grab a beer and not being able to get in because RATM was playing and it was sold out. That's how I remember it anyway. <shrug>

nope, no answers yet.
anyone?

They played the old club, according to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rage_Against_the_Machine_Tour
Show was on January 21, 1993; new space opened on January 5, 1996. Provided Wikipedia is right, anyway...

The video I was talking about is from F Street.
-
And I was talking about the same video.
I also provided a link to it.
Well, the link was to a single 8MM cam version.
Here's the duel cam. http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=343452

Kinda wondering considering I don't think they were flying from show to show at this point in their career but this doesn't make any sense:
January 22, 1993 Philadelphia J.C. Dobbs
January 23, 1993 Los Angeles Hollywood Palladium

while they might not have been flying for each show, they were big enough to in '93 to fly at the start and end of an east coast tour. it is strange that 3 days later they played a show in europe - unlikely, but not impossible. who knows what sort of obligations they had, amounts of money that was offered, etc.

Came across this today, an archive of live vids of bunches of bands including Cop Shoot Cop, Bad Brains, Black Flag, J & MC, and many more.
