Hi...what is the consensus on this board as to the premier satellite radio provider?
-
xm has baseball and hockey. . that's just about all i really need.
-
Same as above. Also XM is based out DC and I have toured the place (friend is a DJ there).
-
Wow, what kind of music does he/she DJ?
-
I'll summarize:
XM Rules.
Sirius has Stern.
Satellite radio sucks.
All radio sucks.
Except WOXY.
I can't hear WOXY in my car.
It's all too expensive.
Why listen to radio when you have an iPod?

BTW....how is air america doing?

Not too badly now that 1/3rd of their stations are owned by Clear Channel.

xm is tanking; it gave 55 million to oprah.
siruis is gaining. they don't waste $$.
d.c. is a city based in freemason corruption.
howard is god, opie and anthony just left xm.
two sports on xm vs. every other sport on sirius.
the jam channel on sirius makes bong noises.
-
you're an idiot. O&A didn't leave xm
they do 2 shows now. one on free FM for CBS
in howards old spot, taking the 90% of his listeners that didnt switch plus their xm spot
sirius wasted 500 mil on 1 show..... that is bombing.
who is gonna get sirius radio for nfl or nascar when they are home on sunday?
howard only has 1.1 million listeners
sirius is tanking worse than xm.

It's early yet, but I'll go out on a limb: Post of the week!

wcpr 97.5(?) wdc pirate radio
-
clear channel has a stake in XM
so go with Sirius.
-
<<sigh>>
this clear channel thing is so stupid. why does it keep going around and around.
clear channel sold its stake in XM and they are in a nasty war right now. sirius sounds a whole lot more like clear channel with its endless repetition. xm sounds like clear channel mostly on the four out of 73 music channels that clear channel sued them to carry, temporarily.
-
Perfectly encapsulated, Chutney!

While Sirius is still experiencing losses, a couple of notes to correct some assumptions (from various coverage -- NY Times, AP, MSN Money):
Revenues nearly tripled in the quarter to $126.7 million compared with $43.2 million in the same period a year ago as the company continued to build up its subscriber base.
On Wall Street, the stock rose as the sharp rise in revenue and subscriber growth overshadowed the loss.
Just under a third of Howard Stern's once-regular listeners have bought, or plan to buy, access to Sirius Satellite Radio, according to a survey of people who listened to Mr. Stern on terrestrial radio. Another 37 percent now listen to the replacement morning shows on Mr. Stern's old stations. And a third have migrated to other stations, according to Jacobs Media, a radio consultancy.
Howard paid less per hour than Oprah:
Sternâ??s deal is fatter, but heâ??s got to work a four-hour day. Still, $93,000 an hour is nothing to sneeze at â?? unless youâ??re Winfrey, pulling in $705,000. If Oprah Winfrey worked as hard as a shock jock, her pay package from XM Satellite Radio would be worth more than $3 billion.
-
NEW YORK (AP) - Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. reported Tuesday that its first quarter loss more than doubled, due largely to expenses of $225 million in stock-related compensation to its star shock jock Howard Stern.
Sirius reported a net loss of $458.5 million, or 33 cents a share, for the January-March period compared with a loss of $193.6 million, or 15 cents a share, a year ago.
-
I acknowledged losses, and yet their stock is going up....

XMU (XM's only station playing indie) is one of the most dissapointing things about satellite radio. It has no personality, plays no older stuff, barely adds any new stuff and repeats the same mediocre songs endlessly.

your first opinion was that "o and a" are going to take ninety percent of howard fans. that's not howard's old chair at k-rock, it's mr. roth's. are you serious, though? o and a and howard are quasi-rivals in a realm of their own understanding. i can just see howard's fans giving in to the a-holes that are opie and anthony (that's an opinion, too). your next opinion was that howard's show is a failure. so you're saying that in three months time since the conception of the show, a single radio personality--in this day in age of ipods, twenty-four hour television assult, movies every tuesday on dvd at best buy, skinamax and porn to titilate--that can get two million listerners to switch to satellite radio (and wind up loving it over testical radio (another opinion)), with an estimate of four million by the end of 2006, a failure which is bombing? ok.
plus, i am a sort-of newbie as well on here. no senoir in my tea. everybody thinks i am buckethead without the act. just ask sonick or that other one; the one whom i make laugh. have a good evening and welcome to the carnival! my favorite opinion of yours was the one about how everyone is home on sundays. you slaves to t.v. are all the same. ;)

A just released study by Bridge Ratings asserts that 1.1 million Howard Stern fans went over to Sirius to be able to continue listening to him. They say this is about 8.4% of his former audience. They also state this migration of his listeners to Sirius has stalled in recent weeks.
2 million obviously switched for howard.
You cant just add all the people that got sirius
over the holiday season and assume they are for Stern.
and yes i'm a slave to my tv as i work 11 hours a day and listen to O&A for another 5

i think that's it. it's a close as it gets to indie, i believe. you should also try the spa channel. seventy-seven, i think. i go to sleep to that shit every night.

i dare . . . you're a good guy, or girl. you're serious about your figures and you'll do fine on here. i can't wait to see the war that is to assume on radio now that o and a are back to battle the rest of the pack. i'm sure that they will be popular on testical radio. i particularly enjoy the fact that WJFK is falling away because of howard's departure. don and mike lost twenty-eight percent of their audience, supposedly because of it. interesting.

nah not an official pest.
i cant do much from my location i suppose.
i will be up in ny on friday and i'm gonna do the walk over with O&A in the morning.

LMAO!!! 9 guys walking across the street together. you "pests" are funny fuckers. keep the laughs coming
what was the figure of people who switched to XM for O&A.. something like 30,000??? hmmmm. and they took "90 percent of stern's audience"??? how is that possible when they havent had an arbitron book yet??
that being said, they'll probably do well on FM since there's literally NOTHING to listen to anymore. but their show still sucks, and they'll always be second-rate wanna-be's. good day sir.

yeah, wannabe's is exactly what they.
even howard admitted to putting a gag order on opie and anthony. they weren't even allowed to say his name on air because howie got pissed. so they started saying "radio edit" when referring to his old ass, and then he made it to where they couldn't say that. then his hypocritcal ass got pissed off when his daughter appeared nude in a play but he can throw bologna at a girls ass and its called entertainment. he wanted to be xm but even xm knew he wasn't worth 500 mil.
i hope cbs wins their case against him. he has to hold press conferences now cause he knows no one listens to him. and you think there are only 9 pests? they got a news reporter fired, they made direct tv change their policy and got O&A back on one of their channels. there were more O&A pests/signs at howard march to the sirius studios than there were stern fans. they also ruined scott ferrel's one week run on sirius. now all he does is a recap of howard and bubba shows. so yeah there are only 9 pests. hoo hoo.
-
come on. just admit it. if you like howard, you don't like howard's competition. if you like howard's competition, then you don't like howard. end of story, end of whatever else. they both make more money than anybody on here, and just love the fact that morons like us across the globe are arguing like children on the short bus because of the simple fact that they exist.

I Dare.. I didn't need you to write a novel about how much howard hurt opie and anus' feelings. i just wanted you to answer the questions I asked.. so exactly how many people were willing to pay to listen to O&A? how exactly did they take all his listeners????
walkonby.. not necessarily true. you dont have to be a blind fan to be a fan. the reason i dont like O&A isn't cuz of what howard thinks (he doesnt even talk bad about them anymore.. i think he couldn't care less) - its because their show fucking BLOWS. the best guests they have are the ones that used to be on stern's show, and all they do with them is ask questions about howard. the few times i tuned into their XM show, at least an hour (if not more) was dedicated to playing stern clips and trying to bash him. those guys are disgruntled fanboys and so are most of their followers. they call howard "old", yet anthony is only like 4 years younger than howard (and looks about 5 years older than him!)
i give them props for having kevin smith on for an entire 4 hours, and having jimmy norton as the third mic (the only thing they got going for 'em) but thats it.
-
oh and by the way mister nugz. . . i like your name.
i enjoy how now they are offering a deal to howard, just like the one o and a have. they want howard to do a cut down version of his sirius show and put it up against o and a on the cbs owned channels. howard is even "considering" doing it because of the pathetic lawsuit cbs filed against him, since he knows that his free show will destroy o and a's free show. it's already doing that quite well on satellite. cheers to the the god that is stern.

PLEASE....let it replace those intensly annoying asshole Junkies on HFS! PLEASE!!!! Heck, I'd even settle for O&A. Anybody!!! I need something to switch to during my morning drive when I don't feel like fooling around with CDs and WTMD has played yet another crap DMB or John Mayer song or some other shit like that, which they play about 85% of the time. I can't take it any longer!!!! The Junkies are even more annoying, or rather irritatingly obnoxious, than WTMD. Sometimes I give up and chill out to NPR hoping that when I switch back, something more tolerable has hit the waves.
-
O&A are close to 3 million on xm. which is just about as many people that sirius has subscribed.
-
sirius had close to three to four million before howard, and now they are at six million. their stocks are up, and the first quarter of sirius for 2006 destroyed xm's (not an opinion). and there is no way, i think, for satellite to pinpoint exactly what their subscribers are listening to, so i would love to know how opie and anthony think that three million of xm listerners are tuning in to them.

March 31, 2006:

XM - 6,501,859
First quarter losses
Sirius ($458.5mn)
XM ($149.2mn)

they barely reached 3 mil after howard switched..
and the 90% of their audience is just a joke
they arent even syndicated fully yet

wow . . . i thought i heard completly different first quarter figures! i don't understand the stock thing, then. their stock is not tanking, it's doing quite well. you would think holders would bail on a company with such numbers.

Most of a satellite radio company's costs are fixed. Once the company hits X number of subscribers (reportedly X = ~10,000,000) then everything after that is gravy. Essentially, those buying the stock are betting that the company will eventually get to that magic number of subscribers.

$55 mil to Oprah, yes, but Sirius has HUNDREDS of these types of signings...
How about the 500 Million they (Sirius) gave Howard? And it has been documented that only a fraction of his listeners came with...
O and A did not leave...they are doing 2 shows a day...both available on XM (uncensored) only one on free.
Last time I checked XM had 6.5 million subs...Sirius was still less than 3...how is less than half "gaining"?
Finally...the sports thing...wrong wrong wrong. MLB, NHL, NBA, College Basketball, ESPN ESPN Radio (both on Sirius as well), World Cup...I can keep going. Sirius has football

sirius is over 4 million subscribers as of 2 weeks ago. before howard announced he was going there, they had around 600,000. sure, they're not all howard's listeners, but i'd say a good 2.5 million are. he had around 12 million listeners before clear channel removed him from their stations... so thats about a fourth of his audience that were willing to pay.
when o&a went to XM their channel was premium and you had to pay $1 extra for it. so how many people signed up? around 30,000. i could be slightly off, but thats the figure i remember (the info came from an XM fan board.) i dont know how many listeners they had at their peak, but clearly they didnt make quite the impact on satellite that howard did.
their show did well in New York, but in alot of other markets (like DC) they flopped. the best thing they can hope for is to get some of his casual listeners that dont subscribe to sirius, or dont know they can download every show for free. it may even be motivation for them to get sirius, after hearing how boring the competiton is.
-
Sirius gave Stern over $200mill of their stock, which he can't sell for a couple of years. That's aside from the $500mill. So maybe Sirius stock wouldn't be doing so well if it wasn't held by guys who couldn't sell it.

Hey, I'm desparate! He's got to be much better than the freaking obnoxious Junkies and lame-ass WTMD, especially now that they are in fund driver mode. Imagine public tv during a fund driver with no visuals and, worse yet, absolutely abysmal programming in between all of the ultra boring fund driving. UGH!!!! I forgot to take any CDs with me today so I couldn't even fall back on those in a pinch.
Is Elliot on DC101? If so, that's not even a option for me since I'm in Baltimore. Can't pick up the signal here. I'm really lost as to what is going on with a lot of terrestrail radio around here now that I rarely ever bother with it.

Is Elliot on DC101? If so, that's not even a option for me since I'm in Baltimore. Can't pick up the signal here. I'm really lost as to what is going on with a lot of terrestrail radio around here now that I rarely ever bother with it. [/b]
here's a idea: switch to satellite.

out of 4 million, yes.
thats the main reason it has taken sirius so long to get their online stream of stern up. they know how many people will be listening, and had to make sure they could handle the volume.

again, completely untrue. howard's deal goes like this:
$400 million over 5 years for the production of the ENTIRE SHOW. not just his salary, EVERYONE'S salary, plus production costs. the extra $100 million came from the stock they gave him...which doubled in value when he switched over. also, he's allowed to sell the stock at ANY TIME.

Not worth it for me. My terrestrail radio battle is only for approximately 45 minutes in the morning for 5 days a week, if even that. If I'm driving to my job in Bethesda, which is a much longer drive, than I'll just pop in a CD. For my local job, it's closer and I'm fighting morning rush hour traffic and like to hear the time, weather, traffic and a little news periodically. I do sometimes put in a CD for the drive home.
Besides, if I'm going to pay any money for radio, it is going to be to one of many different internet stations that I listen to and am much, much happier with. It's just a shame that I can't receive them in my car. Can't afford an iPod or any of the other gadgets that will allow me to receive them in my car so that isn't an option in my life at the moment.

"but does xm make bong noices?"
yes, everyday at 4:20 it comes on and says "Hey Eastern time zone, its 4:20" and then a bong noise comes on. An hour later, it does it for the central time zone, then mountain, then pacific. It gets old fast
