how is this place? good music?
all feedback is appreciated.
-
It was great, and music varied by DJ, but I've gotten some less than stellar reports lately. More of a 'bridge and tunnel' crowd, if you get my drift, and the music's not as good. But, that's just what I've heard. I haven't been in a while. I loved it in the first months...
-
Yes, we city folks are so much cooler than the suburbanites, aren't we? Willing to put up with higher taxes and prices for the privilege of being cooler than all those people who take the tunnel to get into the city.
I was there one time and they played some good vintage country tunes.
Another time there was a black dude playing Simon and Garfunkel tunes and it was horrible.
-
Shutup, Rhett. You can live on 9th and V and be "bridge and tunnel" as I'd describe it and in my opinion. Hey, you heard good country tunes, that's all that matters anyway.
-
Sorry, didn't get your drift. I've always thought "bridge and tunnel crowd" referred to people who don't live in the city. At least that's how folks in NYC use the term.
Does anybody get Bags' drift?
-
The food is good...the chef is Jay Jenc, formerly of Iota Cafe and Greenwood. He definitely knows what he's doing in the kitchen.
-
I always tried to pin down when it was that he left Iota.
It seemed like the food at Iota dropped off from decent to awful at some point, though I haven't eaten there many times.

its a nice space - I went there a few times during the summer with friends - they had just been written up in the Washington Post and I think it had started going to their heads a little - there was also this psycho maitre'd type guy who was taking his job waaay too seriously and generally being rude to everyone
how good the music is depends on who is DJing on any given night but I've heard some good stuff there

What the fuck you doing going to iota...it's in the suburbs isn't it?

I have nothing against the suburbs, or people who live there. We will be there ourselves before 2004 is over.
City dwellers who think that living in the city automatically makes them cooler than suburbanites...they're the problem!
Iota is the best music club in the DC area. That's why I go there. They could put it in Anacostia and i'd go.

I've eaten at Iota twice recently and was quite pleased with the food both times. We were on the Cafe side, and ordered from that menu. I haven't had anything from the bar menu in a while, but I'm sure the catfish tacos are still tasty.
-
Well, except for that huge pole/barrier in the middle of the room.
Staff is awesome, especially one weekday bartender....don't know his name.

My little secret I'll share with you: Stand in front, or on one side of the pole. Don't stand behind it.

That's difficult to do when you keep dancing all around the pole like it's celeste or something.
-
SalParadise, you should definitely check out Cafe Saint Ex for yourself. Whether it's the place for you or no, you'll have a good time carching the scene at a new place. If it's not for you, go to the Red Room.
-
If you go on Sunday nights you'll hear metal. Yeh, the late 70's early/80's variety.
Remember, the 80's are 20 years behind us.
-
FYI, there will be an Air CD Release party at Saint-Ex on Jan. 21st. I've never been there, but they do occasionally have intriguing DJ sets.

Oh, dear God! Please don't ever let me go to Iota on nights when Rhett is pole dancing.
-
nicola conte, who is on esl's label did a dj set there a few months back. i plan on going to this listening party on the 21st.
the food at st ex is hit or miss, but more on the hit side than miss.

Hmmm... I would have to listen to "Talkie Walkie" and decide if I want to see them again. I didn't really care much for "10,000 Hz Legend"

That pole reminds me of the old 9:30 Club. I kept expecting someone to climb it holding a video camera.

staying on topic for the sake of markie...
info for the sake of rhett...
from the Cafe Saint-Ex Gate 54 Schedule (http://www.saint-ex.com/gate54.html)
Monday, January 5: DJ Baby Dumplin and DJ Chowchow play all things twangy (the good stuff that is). Also trivia, scrabble and games.
Tuesday, January 6: "Muck" with DJ Luv. Roots, rockabilly and jump blues. Magic tricks.
and yes i realize that these happened in the past, but the schedule hasn't been updated past 1/15
-
Thanks alot Kosmo.
I actually saw that myself this morning, and was disappointed that it was in the past.
Thanks to SP for starting the thread, and reminding us all of the Cafe Saint-Ex option, even if it is plagued by the "bridge and tunnel" people, whoever that are.

<off topic warning>
rhett have you been to any of the '52 pickup organized Bop n' Bowls (http://52-pickup.com/rockabillymusic/bop-n-bowl.html) in Falls Church? the lineup is usually pretty twangy and they have a dj between bands. i went once and had a fun time, have been meaning to go back but the events seem to happen when other madness is occuring
-
That would require driving somewhere@!
Yes, guy i work with has mentioned it a number of times. Haven't taken him up on it yet; might require hanging out with a 50something cigar chomping guy i work with...

good to know, what is their new album like?
-
Don't you remember that little crow's nest seat up top of that pole?!? There was usually a staffer up there videotaping it, and they simulcast that on these cheapy little t.v.s. Aaaah, I remember that so well.
Rhett, you can borrow my Escalade for the drive out to Bop n' Bowl.

Yep - that's what I'm talking about. I'll bet Seth has quite the video library of classic shows at home.

That was just a live video feed. Most shows weren't recorded, and if they were, it was at the band's request--they paid 50 bux for the 3/4 inch tape and it was given to them at the end of the night. Everybody always thinks there's this mythical library of great performances from the old 9:30, but there's really not. And it's a damn shame.

That is a damn shame.Hopefully you guys have rectified that.

I walked in on Sunday and walked right out, it was far too crowded.

Yeah, I was sitting at a table in the middle, we had to snatch a table from other people waiting; isn't it always like that esp. weekends?
-
Yes, it's not worth waiting for a couch. Have you checked out Cafe Love/Love Cafe? I prefer that place.
-
thumbs up to that place thirsty, and they are open until midnight!

Seriously, you order your stuff from the counter and then you get left alone. No hassle, no stress. They don't even care how long you sit there. Cafe Love is great. My only complaint is the random music they play.

cafe love has to be avoided by me at all cost.......not sure i could be in the proximity of all those lovely cakes........
just walking past the shop is bad enough :(
-
I tend to just go for the bagels. My roomate gave me one of their cupcakes once. A stick of butter fell out of the icing.
-
mmmmmmmm butter.
i'm not sure i could be as controlled as you thirsty.........my butt would tell me to order bagel.........but my heart would be screaming STODGY CAKE!!!!!STODGY CAKE!!!!!!!
