Title: Jose Andres Food Truck
Post by: azaghal1981 on January 16, 2012, 09:09:21 pm
Supposedly driving around the city (http://dc.eater.com/archives/2012/01/16/jos-andrs-is-keeping-a-secret-food-truck-in-dc.php)

I have a weird, totally irrational food truck phobia but this has my curiosity piqued.

I'm a big fan of street food, if it's good and cheap I'm there  ;D

Problem with all these new food trucks is that none of them are very cheap at all.

per the thievery@kastles thread from this summer, anyone who ever eats at a food truck is a lemming.  there is no such thing as tasty food coming from a food truck.  the only reason people eat from them is because the truck operators tweet.  end of discussion.

Agreed about food trucks.

Gas stations, however, are another thing entirely.

yeah let me stand in line in freezing weather to pay $10 to eat on the street!

food trucks are for lemmings or hipsters which is about the same thing.

I've tried a couple of them, when the lines weren't ridiculous, to see what the fuss was all about.  I still don't know.

food trucks are for getting food illnesses, that hipsters eat at.

message boards are for getting made fun of, by hipsters that write it.

The Fojol Brothers of Merlindia and Hula Girl are both delicious and cheap.

Where can you get a bite to eat down town at lunch that's less than $10 bucks and you're not hungry an hour later (Subway, Potbelly, etc, etc, etc).

here's an idea

pack your lunch.  you control what you eat.  you know the preparation of it is safe.  it is cheaper.  unless of cource you think you will look like a dork and you care way too much about what other people think of you because bringing your own lunch is so uncool and people might think you are poor.  start supporting your own ideas and not some total stranger.  for all you know, they are serving you cat.

well, by that logic, you could say the same thing about any restaurant. the big advantage to being mobile is not having to pay rent. they still have to pass health inspections and serve human consumable food.

i'm really trying not to eat at restaurants anymore.  i hear various things here and there about this place or that place . . . and it really makes me demand to be more conscious of what i eat on a daily basis.

Walkie's concerns regarding possible grossness/illnesses are why I have shied away (and I know these concerns are likely irrational as I stated in the first post) from food trucks but I would be willing to risk it with this one.

^^^^Best advise.

I started doing this a while ago.  It has totally changed the way I eat AND spend money.  Not only do not blow 6-8 bucks a day on lunch, but the way I fritter away money has totally changed.  Best lifestyle change I've made in ages, as evidenced  by my growing savings account.
Title: Re: Jose Andres Food Truck
Post by: Jaguar on January 17, 2012, 01:13:07 pm
I'm sick of packing lunches but have been doing so for most of my work life. In some cases, there just wasn't anything within a reasonable distance to where I was working and the place either had no food options on site or it was just inedible without getting sick. Boy, I could tell you some school cafeteria horror stories that would make the nastiest food truck seem like a gourmet treat!

Have also worked in a lot places that don't have a refrigerator which limits what you can safely store until lunchtime. Then there were the schools that had refrigerators but it wasn't worth using because the parents would always steal the teachers lunches.

Now I'm lucky enough to just go home for lunch except the time is so short that all I do is eat something very quick. I'm a slow eater so sticking around wouldn't give me anymore real eating time. Deal with that by snacking at work when I get a chance.

It's nice to take a diversion once in awhile but it seems those trucks tend to only venture into areas that already have plenty of restaurant and carry out options. I've never seen or heard of any around here and have a feeling that the town wouldn't allow them so they don't compete with the many restaurants. I don't know though. Either way, I doubt that I'd bother with buying from one.

Today's menu, leftover jambalaya.

Yum! Even better leftover because it gives it more time to absorb all of those delicious spices. Only thing is, that's one of those foods that I rarely chance eating at lunchtime for fear of needing an excessively long break before my work day is over.

I eat from food trucks on a fairly regular basis and find the food quite tasty from most of them.   My favorite at the moment is rolls on rolls serving up tasty indian food http://www.facebook.com/rollsonrolls  in general the Halal grill trucks are worth seeing out.  The El Flordian and Fiecelle sandwich trucks are yummy.

And then we'll have this ice cream flauta. Flautas are these long very thin things. They make very cute sandwiches because even a lady with a very small
mouth can enjoy this very long flauta. And then the ice cream is kind of like an elongated whoopee pie.

I won't argue on taste, but it kinda skeeves me out when chain restaurants trade craft for consistency.  I'm not sure I want to be able to get a Potbelly Turky-n-Chez (tm) that tastes exactly the same in the Cincinnati airport as it does in the St. Louis airport.

I went to Meatballs and had a terrible middle school cafeteria quality meal and then noticed a charge on my receipt that said "Open Food." I asked about the charge and they said it was for the toppings. I point to a sign that said "Toppings Free!!" and they responded with "one topping is free....you got two toppings." Oh cool, thanks for the heads up.

Also, they played non-stop 80s doo-wop billy joel....

So, it was like several awful things happening at once.

Then it might skeeve you out to learn Meatballs doesn't have a real kitchen. The meatballs are made from a company in MD and the sauces from a company in Alexandria. They only attempt to reheat the stuff at the restaurant.

I like HIll Country but you're definitely paying the rent on that giant space. The Capital Q a few blocks up is a better value (esp. at lunch) and it's not a chain.

luke's has a slight advantage over red hook for me-mainly because its on my way home from work and there is never a line there.  both are very very good.

do not get luke's chowders though-they are pasty with flour. flour in a chowder is a big no no.

i'm from coastal massachusetts and i worked at a seafood restaurant up there for a few years so i've got lobster cred.  ;D

I agree -- three of us ate there, not one was impressed with either app or entree.  All 3 entrees were far too salty.

That said, I love me Andres and will def find his truck.  I'm gettin' me the $20 sandwich!  Pepito de Iberico: seared Iberico pork and Serrano ham with roasted green peppers, caramelized onions and aliolo, $20.

Actually...

Anyone been to American Eats??

Overpriced crap I tell you. I'd rather spend $12 at a food truck.

A jokester.

Personally, I'd rather take it in the ass than pay $20 for a sandwich, but I imagine the general public doesn't care for either.

Went over today and got the fried chicken, ice cream and Pepe tonic. Set me back $18 but everything was very good to stellar.
