Title: 930 Survival Football 2012
Post by: vansmack on August 13, 2012, 04:56:05 pm
Yes, it?s that time again, where you can get some of your money back from the Proprietor of the 9:30 Club.

Given that we inevitably have multiple pools going every year, I would like to propose a small discussion before I post the link to the pool.  Unfortunately, Yahoo prevents me from doing what I want to do:  allow folks who lose in the first week to buy back in and be part of the main pool (albeit for twice as much money).  Yahoo does however, allow me to make the settings to be two losses and you're out.

Discuss the following options:

#1 - use a different site, allow losers in first week (or first two weeks) to buy back in for an additional $5 (or $105 for the big money guys).

#2 - Use the Yahoo site, 2 losses and you're out.

#3 - status quo - use the yahoo site, one and done.

Previous rules, same objective:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The object of 930 Survival Football is to be the last Active member of the 930 Board.

In order to accomplish this goal, you must correctly pick the winner of one professional football game each week.

But, to make this somewhat simple task more difficult, each user can only pick each professional football team once during the season.

If a correct selection is made, the user will remain Active for the following week. If an incorrect selection is made, that user will be Eliminated (assumes option #3).

Our Group is limited to the first 50 people who sign up. There are two prize categories:

$5 - every participant must play the $5 version of the Survival Football pool, winner take all.

$100 - in addition to the $5 pool, an optional ?High Stakes? $100 per person pool is a side pool for those that wish to participate. The decision must be made prior to week one.  To signify your willingness to participate, simply put an asterisk next to your submission name (eg, vansmack*) on the yahoo site.

Seth, GGW, the Good Doctor and Smackie have also been known to do a $1000 pool.  I will leave it to them to challenge others.

Best of luck, and in case you need to be reminded about previous results?

You should delete anyone who doesn't pay by the start of the season to clear up the issues it looks like you had last year.

survival pools aren't limited in the number of participants in the same way that fantasy football is.  the more the merrier!

so $100 pool players must pay $105.

do $1000 pool players have to pay $1005, or $1105?

The $1000 pool does not need to pay in advance.  That money is usually exchanged over some back room lunch, mafia style.

I've never officially required a participant of the $1000 pool to participate in the $100 pool, but that is because most who are willing to wager $1000 are willing to wager another $100 without issue.

Technically, we are limited by Yahoo to 50 people, but that has never been an issue.

You must sign up by 8:25 p.m. ET on Wednesday, September 5.  You have until Sunday, September 9, 2012 1:00 p.m. ET to make your first selection.

I am a lifelong Giants fan but I never bet on them. In any individual game, they will let you down.

Glad to see Dr. Phibes joined the Big Boys pool. Looking forward to another lunch. Hope vansmack will join us this year.

They DID almost lose to the Rams. My point being, why not hold onto the heavyweights for later in the season? Now you can't pick the Lions later in the season! Everyone has different stretegies though, so it's fine. Chumps.

excellent strategy: take risks early. save the sure things for later.

Detroit is one of those teams full of shitheads that could totally not show up on any given Sunday.  My theory was that they would at least have their shit together for the opener... I thought wrong.

Good riddance I don't have to pick them again.

Ravens over Bengals? 44-13? Seems risky. Lions won on the last effing drive TO THE RAMS! THEY BARELY BEAT THE RAMS!

I just think if there is another lock to run with that, but anyone can win on any given Sunday.... on the same end, I can't pick the Ravens again, so who knows!

We just have different strategies, Sweety. But like I said, anything can happen week to week in the NFL, I mean, look at my Skins. I think maybe 4 people expected us to win.

This week has some tough match ups.. see if there are any bounce back wins after some week 1 surprise losses....

Q: What was Bill Belichick's WARM (Wins Above Raheem Morris) for that last minute of the Pats-Cards game?
?David, OKC

SG: Negative-two. That was the worst-coached minute in recent Patriots history. It was almost like Belichick decided, "Instead of winning by one point, it would be much more fun to destroy every suicide pool in America."

Second chance pool details will be provided in the morning.

is this for the 1k pool only, or will there be a $100 option?

So the entire league was knocked out this week?? How do we determine a winner??

typically, winnings are split between those who got knocked in the last week (i.e. survived the longest),  so the pot should be split 6 ways between our "winners"... should be enough to buy you a nice latte.  maybe.

Second chance pool details will be provided in the morning.

is this for the 1k pool only, or will there be a $100 option?

$1000 and $100.  No cheapskate $5 players though.

So the entire league was knocked out this week?? How do we determine a winner??

typically, winnings are split between those who got knocked in the last week (i.e. survived the longest),  so the pot should be split 6 ways between our "winners"... should be enough to buy you a nice latte.  maybe.
Pretty steamed about this. Also, I lost by 4 fucking points, my running back was kicking my defenses ass last night. DAMN IT. AND The Redskins lost. Bad football Sunday all around for me.

Dammit.  This is such a pain in the ass....

I'll get on it tonight, but the win is something like $12 per person above your initial investment and not any where near worth my hourly rate.

That being said, congrats to:

Death From Above 1979
Money Donor 2012
Seth
Something Witty
The Boss
GotHaggis

Seth is the big winner in all of this at somewhere around $4000.  Remember this next time he raises beer prices.

New pool info below.  Sorry, but no $5 option.  It is $100 or you can donate to the Seth Hurwitz Tuscan Villa fund by playing for $1000.
Put + after your name if you want to do the $1000.

And just so we're clear - this is working just like the last time (2010)-- If Seth is the last survivor, Anton and I each owe Seth $2K.  If Anton is the last survivor, Seth owes $0 and I owe Anton $1K.  Likewise, if I am the last survivor, Seth owes me $0 and Anton owes me $1K.

930 Survival Football 2013?

Also - If I set up a weekly pick-em pool, would anyone be interested?  It would be $100 for the season.  Weekly payout would be $5 * # of participants.  Total season winner would get $15 * # of participants.  In other words, if there were 20 participants, you would get your money back by winning just one week.

930 Survival Football 2013?

Bad news.

Smackie's career has continued to rise at an astronomical pace, and he has now reached level at the University that employs him where NCAA By-Law 10.3 applies to his position.

Quote
NCAA ByLaw 10.3, prohibits student-athletes and all staff members in an athletics department from participation in sport wagering activities on any intercollegiate, amateur, or professional athletics competition.  Sports wagering includes placing, accepting or soliciting a wager (on a staff member?s or student-athlete?s own behalf or on the behalf of others) of any type with any individual or organization on any intercollegiate, amateur, or professional team or contest. This includes pools or fantasy leagues in which an entry fee is required and there is an opportunity to win a prize.

I'm happy to pass administration of this pool off to someone else to run, just let me know who.

I bet they also prohibit employees from posting on forums that condone violence and drug use.

No - everyone pays $100 up front for the whole season.  The way each participant's $100 is dispersed is $5 each week to the weekly winner ($5 * 17 weeks = $85) and $15 to the season winner ($85 + $15 = $100).  So, if there were 20 participants, the weekly payout would be $5 * 20 = $100; and the season winner (most correct picks for the whole season) would get $15 * 20 = $300.
