Title: how early to iota for a show?
Post by: lily1 on January 15, 2004, 01:18:00 pm
peeps, i've been iota a few times, but it was to see artists that clearly were not going to be a big draw, plus it was during the week. the thrills are there tommorow and i'm thinking it will be a big draw. what time should i get there? right at 9.30? 10? 11?

 is anyone going tommorow?

ha, ha - I would get there early - they had a big spread on that free newspaper you get at the metro station today and generally are getting a fair bit of 'buzz' - I have to say I bought the album when I was home in Dublin in August and have really tried to like it but it just comes over as a little forced

I've always maintained that, even kind of popular shows, rarely sold out before 10, 9:30 at the earliest.  HOWEVER, on a recent weeknight, Evan Dando sold out by 8:30.  Some things to consider -- he's appealing to the Whitlows/Clarendon Grill crowd in their late 20s who remember him from high school or college days (when most people were exposed to slightly alternative music), and the Thrills are a newer, more under the radar band.

But here's my recommendation.  If it's important for you to see the band, get there early -- by 9:00.  You can eat in the restaurant, or just have drinks over there with an app.  It assures you'll get in, and you can hang with your friends and talk before the music starts.  When I really want to see a band, I get to the restaurant and have dinner around 8:00.  They come through and let you pay the cover for the show, so you definitely are 'in.'

i don't know much about the thrills, but if they are getting mainstream radio airplay, show up around 8.

If you're smart you'll do what I do.....call and ask what time for sure the band you want to see is hitting the stage and ask them what the crowd is like at the time........always willing and able to give you the heads up.....

Always better for both parties to SIT on the pole, not STAND on it.

Of course, I'm talking NASCAR here, and nothing else.

Snag is, especially with a band that hasn't played there before, the club won't know how popular the show ends up being.  They told the folks in front of me at Evan Dando to get "early," as in by 9 or 9:30.  And if it's a popular show, doesn't matter when the band goes on.  Be there by 9:00.

I remember when Ryan Adams played Iota, right after the release of Heartbreaker. We got there while the opening act was on, and the line was practically down to Fresh Fields. It wasn't moving, because it was already sold out and people were hoping that some would leave so they could get in...yeah right.

This show will sell out quickly. Get there asap. Pay and get stamped and go somewhere to eat if you don't want to hang out.

I think the Thrills will be the new Counting Crows. Yuck.

Lily, get there early (before 8:00) -- this is the blurb from the Post's Entertainment email:

 The Thrills
Irish lads form band, go to California and dream dreams of Beach Boys and Gram Parsons. See what they've come up with, at Iota Friday. But arrive very early if you plan to get in. This show will sell out for sure.

And WRNR has had Thrills on their playlist this week- although many of the listeners may check them out at the free RNR show at noon in Annapolis.
I'll probably get there at 9:00 or so... if it's sold out then I won't mind not getting in because that means its totally over-crowded inside.  Unless a band is unimaginably compelling, after an hour or so of people stepping on my feet and blowing smoke in my face I start thinking thoughts like "Isn't there a pancake place down the street?"

Put it this way, they sold out the Bowery Ballroom well in advance, and that place is a lot bigger than Iota...

bloody hell, i'll have to go there right after work. i actually called iota at 1pm this afternoon to make a dinner reservation so i could bide my time in the restuarant and then hop over for the show since they give the restaurant patrons first dibs (or so they say) and they had NO reservations open for tommorow, for anytime.

maybe i'll just pass and wait for them to swing back in town and play the black cat. or hope for it to be really f'n cold and all you pussy weather people stay home and that guarantees me a spot at the show!  :)

I'll be honest, I had no idea who Gram Parsons was until about a year ago.  Does the Post think most Washingtonians are aware of him?  I sincerely doubt they are.

To me, Gram Parsons is like the Velvet Underground of the alt-country world. Highly revered by those that followed, yet never achieving mainstream success during his career. Incredibly important, though maybe a tad overrated.

Yeah, but I think lot of people "get" who Gram Parsons is enough to understand the reference in terms of another band.  I couldn't tell ya a Gram Parsons song, but I know what his 'deal' is.

The article in the Post today says the album sales in Europe is pushing a million, while here in the US it has yet to sell even 20,000 units.

Guess that proves that Europeans go for mediocrity while Americans are too busy buying (Clay Aikens) crap?

hope you're feeling better lily - a friend of mine went - he liked it (unlike me he likes the CD) - he said it was packed and they are clearly getting a huge push over here in the states - right down to some manager type doing the whole "Ladies and Gentlemen, from Dublin, Ireland, THE THRILLS!!!!" - he was also amused at the fact that they had three roadies for a gig at Iota

theres a review in the Post today where they are called a  novelty-tinged nostalgia act (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A28366-2004Jan18_2.html)

3 roadies? gesh, even most bands at the black cat don't come with 3 roadies! well, i'm sure they'll be at the black cat by early spring so i'll check them out then.

Well I went, for what it's worth.  I was pretty much on the fence with them - I have the album but didn't really know what to think of it.  The show didn't convert me.  They were good at whatever it was they were trying to do, but I'm not sure what that was.

I personally think their slower tracks are weak, so I didn't really enjoy those (I just don't like how they're constructed - if that makes any sense). And for the faster tunes they turned into some sort of e-street band (and more than one person I know had this thought independently) knockoff.  Plus one person I was with couldn't get over the fact that the lead really DOES sound sort of like Rod Stewart.

Still, they obviously had charisma.  I think what it comes down to was that if you like this sort of thing, then this is the sort of thing you'd like.
