With DCCD going where do you like to shop?
For me:
1. CD and Game Exchange, 50 cents is a price not a rapper, $1, used and new. Nice staff too.
2. Soundgarden. Evil place, I can't get out for under $50.
3. Record and Tape Traders. Have some good stuff, don't go there as much as the others.
4. Forget the name, not sure if it is still there in Fredrick, but they had a very small collection of CDs that you could find nowhere else. Upstairs somewhere. I bought one CD (Wat Tyler) and they were sad to see it go!
-
On this side of the Mississippi:
1. CDepot College Park
2. Soundgarden in Baltimore
3. CD Game Exchange in Adams Morgan and Tenleytown
Out of town, Montreal seems to have some decent used cd places, particularly for jazz. The exchange rate is very favorable.
NYC used cd stores suck, though there is a good one for new Americana. Can't remember the name.
West of the Mississippi:
There's a good one in Seattle, but can't remember the name.
But of course Amoeba in SF, LA, and presumably the Berkeley store as well top everything.
-
amoeba in san francisco
waterloo in austin
streetlight records in san jose
soundgarden in balmer
yeah, there was one cd store in nyc that was really good, but i can't remember it. . .somewhere near broadway i think. oh well.

I get in a whole lotta trouble at Waterloo in Austin and Twist & Shout in Denver.

Can't wait for this year's SXSW. Between the Shiner Bocks & the Waterloo purchases it's an expensive trip...Gotta love the Waterloo in-stores also when they roll out the beer keg from the microbrewery next door.
My fav Record store though is a little one here in Pittsburgh (Bloomfield actually) called Paul's CDs. If you're ever in town check it out. I just returned from a little browsing trip & ended up with ten new additions to my family...
-
It looks like I'll be taking the metro/bus/light rail combo to to Baltimore for Soundgarden more often.
I was impressed with AKA Records in old town Philadelphia - sort of like a larger, better stocked version of DCCD - with considerably lower prices.
Also Chicago has some great ones: Reckless Records is where you go for Neko Case sightings, and Laurie's Planet of Sound in Lincoln Square is great - they always have had some choice bootlegs for pretty good prices. And the three or so Dr. Wax's have some good used stuff.
She Said Boom and Soundscapes in Toronto are both ok, but not really worth writing home (or here, for that matter) about. I never found anything better while living there, though.

Paul's CDs is a great place! I remember standing in that store and thinking, "Why in the hell don't we have a place like this in DC??" *sigh*
And I am thinking of going to SXSW this year... You can get individual show tickets, right?

Smackie's new place is less than 10 blocks from the Haight store. I must visit 4-5 times a week.

Paul's stepped right out of High Fidelity - it's even got the same characters. Love it.
You should strongly consider going to SXSW. The preliminary band list should be out soon - in fact it's late.
The price for a badge is steep (especially now that it's getting closer - check swsx.com) but it's so worth it. You can buy a wristband and pay at the door, but the pecking order is badge, then wristband, then pay at door. On Wed & Thurs nite any option will do, but you'll get screwed on the weekends when the lines are long. I would have missed many incredible shoes over the years without a badge. You'll get into many things with the badge that otherwise you'd miss. The other trick is to contact your favorite labels prior to going & get an invite pass for their private parties. Some of the best things occur during the day and you'll need the invite to get in.
-
I'm going to the soundgarden for the first time next weekend...Im forcing a friend to go to try and help keep me under 50 bucks lol
the store I can get into a lot of trouble at as of now is the record and tape traders main store in Towson....even though the last couple of times in I havent been that impressed with the used selection
my normal place I go is the white marsh best buy...there's no fun or enjoyment alas, Im supporting faceless corporatism(is that even a word) but....when I know exactly what Im going to get, its a lot simpler driving the 5 minutes there than into towson, up to bel air, or down into town.....

Twist and Shout and Waxtrax in Denver
Newbury Comics on Newbury and the Garage store in Boston

I really think I might go -unless work prevents it. Well, money's an issue, too. I thought it might be like CMJ where you can still buy tickets for individual shows. If I have to buy a badge...yikes. That really is pricey.
-
If you're really interested in going and would like a travel buddy or two, let me know. I'm planning to go (first timer) and it would be great split the cost of a hotel room...more $$ for other stuff that way!
Agree with Grotty, the badge is the best bet.

Whoops. www.sxsw.com (http://www.sxsw.com)
The other will give you a Japanese Geisha site. I can't read Japanese, but that's the gist I get. ;)
I hear Amoeba is great. And Reckless.
Local: When I have time to shop: CD Cellar. No time: Best Buy (hate to say it), or I shop online. Unfortunately, I don't get to some of the other MD/DC cd stores that I used to get to.
Non-local: Record Exchange in Blacksburg, Spaceboy Music, Philadelphia. A few in Tucson, AZ : Toxic Ranch, Zia's, Zip's, Bookman's.

CD Cellar mainly, CD/Game Exchange/A.M./Tenley, Now! in Old Town, Tower if desperate, and occasionally, CD Warehouse in G'Town.
-
amazon.com..?
ebay...?
-
Which place around DC has the best local music selection? Any idea when DCCD is actually closing?

haven't been to paul's in some time (used to walk to a few on the south side when i lived in da burg), but paul's even had my favorite pittsburgh rock legend karl hendricks as an employee. kinda like having ian mckaye as a stockboy. now that's cred.
soundgarden is awesome, might have to try a couple of the other dc stores mentioned here.

ahh, the good old days of the mid 90s when a wristband cost you $35 if you bought it february. now it's. . what, $300 or so or more for a badge?? if you're looking to buy at the door, good luck, unless you plan on staying at the one venue all night, in which case, get there well before the doors open, but risk missing the free in-stores during the day.
do they still do the record show in the old austin civic center (site of the clash's "rock the casbah" video) during that week, or did they tear it down like liberty lunch?

Just depends...yeah, ebay for hard to find, and to beef up my collection cds from the past.
Amazon's "secure purchases" are not so secure in my experience.
I also use awarestore.com or mymusic.com (Canadian, and they send cds w/ a piece of Bazooka).
cduniverse, tower, cdnow are all okay.
bestbuy.com offers the option to order online and have it shipped to the store.
Sometimes it's cheaper online, sometimes you're better off buying in the store.

No record show last year, not sure about this year. The Civic Center is definitely gone like the Lunch. But a new one has risen in its place.

i was heartbroken when i heard about liberty lunch being torn down. . and i think electric lounge is gone too. so many fond memories of liberty lunch, like meeting bob mould, when he lived in austin, during a magnapop show and going backstage to hang (for like 5 minutes) with gbv just so i could get toby to sign my copy of "bee thousand." course, in the summer, it was hot as hell in there.

Last year they did this thing called Flat Stock which was a show for concert poster art. It was great (If you're into that sort of thing). I've got 'posters' all over my house. Buy 'em for $25 and then pay 4x times that to get them framed up.
One of the last few years though they did have a record show. Not sure what's on tap for 2004.

isn't that where Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs) got his skull busted by the baseball bat?
-
Yep, that's the place. I was about to post something about that. Case details (http://www.utexas.edu/courses/albright/courses/ptsp00/whigs.htm)
The Twilight Singers played in Austin a couple weeks back.
On the new TS album, there's a line in "St. Gregory," that says, "They love me down in Texas."

CD Whorehouse in Georgetown is good for obscure British stuff and imports, it has some cool CDs. Prices are a bit higher than game exchange, but the CDs are all in good condition and a lot of shite has been pre-filtered out.

I had tix to see the Whigs @ Bogarts on NY eve a few years ago. It was cancelled as Dulli recovered from a fractured skull.

my home while i'm away
god knows, i got my reasons

Kozik was at the show - very cool. Wish I had the talent to that. What a life.
I know where you mean. It's probably dead now - there's a Virgin there. :(

You guys must all be single. I don't think my wife would let me put a concert poster up, even if I wanted to. Well, except for the vintage Hank Williams concert poster that was up before she moved in.

nope - thats what basements are for....although it must be said I'm much better at buying posters than actually hanging them up

actually, my g/f loves the posters. she's let me put them up in the kitchen, since she gave me that room as mine to decorate.

May very well get one of those in 2004.

you can't just tack 'em up or tape them. get them framed. then they're like a fine piece of art.
that site above - the shame of rock n roll - has a section where he posts photos that buyers have submitted showing their purchases in their new habitat.

Not necessarily...
Concert posters and posters in general, have an artistic and graphic quality. (Look at the poster Grotty just bought, pretty cool). They can look even nicer framed.
Too bad your wife won't let you put posters up.

you are way wrong...remember the graphics show they had at bumbershoot? I thought many of those posters were pretty cool...this comment really surprises me, Rhett...and since when do I have any say about what you put up?
-
I dunno, I have tried to grab concert posters at shows before...
Anyway, I think those things are ok for a rec room, but just sort of tacky for a living room.

Yes "posters" being "prints". Semantics.

Generation Records in NYC is great. It's about a block from Washington Square Park and has a lot of indie and classic punk stuff, plus a lot of live bootlegs. Even better, there are a huge assortment of used live bootlets in the basement, some going for five or six bucks per disc. I dropped about 100 bucks there last weekend, but now have about 15 new discs to check out.
In west Seattle, Easy Street Records has a great selection, plus you can get a kick-ass breakfast there too.
-
That's the one I was trying to remember, though I've only been to the branch in Queen Anne, near the Space Needle.

I was clarifying for the benefit of Rhett that if I had discouraged posters it was the taking of cheesy promo posters they hang at bars, not the cool, graphic screen printed ones

And I hadn't bothered to check the links. I was assuming we were talking posters they hang at bars, which you sometimes see bands selling as merch, as well as on their websites.

IKEA provides a cheap and easy solution. (http://www.ikea-usa.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=12&productId=12129&langId=-1&parentCats=10109*10246*10425)

I frame most of mine on my own. (For artwork and expensive items, I go to places like the one mentioned above). Custom framing can be expensive. The IKEA option is a good one - unfortunately, it's a pain to go to the store "near" me. IKEA also has frames for cd inlets w/ spot for the cd...for those of you that want to frame your cd w/ inlet.
I go to Michael's for frames. They have metal frames that you put together yourself. Different colors, etc. The tops and sides are sold separately. You can buy the glass there. I found the prices reasonable. You can also buy archival safe products (tape, backing, etc.) there, or at art stores.
-
I agree that there are great concert posters that deserve to be framed and put up. Dredj for one made proper prints that they were selling on nice thick stock. Sure maybe not up in the formal dining room, but the spare bedroom or the basement they are great. I have some great ones, probably not 25 but I might be there.
