cannot believe the 930 did not make the top 20...
as someone wrote in the comments the 930 club may be the best club on the planet.

List voided.
Fact that it is an RS list hurts its cred bad enough as it is. The only thing left worth reading in RS is anything Matt Taibbi writes.

well when you look at the list there are some people on there that you'd think would have voted for the 930... like corin tucker
but there are a bunch of pieces of shit too.. michael rapino from live nation??? sharon osbourne? why are these clowns voting? when was the last time sharon osbourne went to a rock club???
i think they should have based it more on bands that play clubs rather than so many industry people..its tough to compile this kind of list though.... phoenix never played the 930...why would mars vote for the place?
i think their voting sample is just too small to be meaningful
-
Actually Phoenix played the 9:30 club twice in 2005 and 2006.

really? wow...had no idea.
not that it is germane to the thread but did they headline or open? thanks.
-
Headline both times and I got to DJ both shows...
-
I am more surprised to see Tucker listed there than I am to see Rapino and Osbourne. Those two are major industry figures and Rolling Stone is the closest thing there is to a Music Industry magazine.
-
Headline both times and I got to DJ both shows...
fascinating....given that in 2009 or thereabouts they played rock and roll hotel...i take it they were a bit down before Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix blew up...
I wish I'd been at those 930 shows....
-
I definitely remember seeing at least one of those shows announced.
It was at like...the end of April?
-
I think the Phoenix RRH show ended up there in part because both the 9:30 club and the Blackcat already had artists booked that night. There is also the build hype via a intimate gig strategy...
-
though i tend to agree that rolling stone magazine is a very biased slanted point of origin . . . but then again, what really isn?t? everybody lets personal opinion slip into their writings. it forms part of the structure of what they want people to gain from said writing. but rolling stone magazine has had money for article scandals, "friends with the owner gets you everywhere? talk, and just downright questionable reviews of movies and music that did not deserve the praise/bs heaved at us, with their red stars. i hate those fucking red stars. but the point of all this is that i look at the nine thirty club and i just see a place that gets that same sort of "forced write up" from everybody around here, because it is home, it is the place we feel "apart of." i have my place as well that i worship and say is the best but on a grand scale nobody truly recognizes. i actually feel that the national in richmond (not my favorite) gives nine thirty a run for the prize every time. but that is my write up. nine thirty cant be the best or the greatest . . . when you have an entire country of ?greatest places? with stories and people that promote them. the end.

yeah - when they played DAR later that year they got to say "last time we were in DC we played some shitty hole in the wall called rock and roll hotel!". it gave the crowd a warm, nostalgic feeling, like they were witnessing the ascent of a band.
they should have blown up with it's never been like that, and it just didn't happen.
anyways, that list is stupid, and nobody should give rolling stone the online traffic.

I don't get the complaints on this thread. You haven't even mentioned one club on the list that doesn't belong. You know the 930 club and you have been there what benefit would it be to you if it were on the list? I was suprised that just about every club in Chicago is on the list. But whatever, if you are ever in one of the cities with a club listed you can use the article as a reference if you want or not.
I have never been to any of these places though Union Transfer does seem to get a lot of cool bands. I will probably visit it before too long.

man, can i just say how much i fucking hate websites where you have to click an arrow to see each entry for 'best of' or countdown or whatever lists? give them to me on all one page you fucking terrible marketing/web designers

I agree. I didn't look at the links you can see the name of the clubs by hovering over the photos.

Belly Up - Aspen
I'll take any 1 week of the 9:30 summer shows over the entire summer lineup at Belly Up.
And you better have $$ to go during snow season.
Plus no club under 10 years old has really paid it's dues to belong on the list.
When they title it 'Venues that Rock' - Joe's Pub doesn't fit the bill. It's like the Birchmere crossed with Blue's Alley in line up.
No 9:30, 1st Avenue, Cat's Cradle, Stubb's = shit list

Why would yo want a list of places you already know about?

Can we get back to talking about beer and whiskey? Damn, this thread and the one about best music of the first quarter suck.
I wonder if they start threads on football message boards to discuss lists of the best stadiums and best first quarters.

There are annoying threads on sports team sites whenever someone in the press doesn't pick their team to win the championship the fans belittle the author.
This is even more silly as it is all subjective. What makes a rock bar better than another. I like the ottobar 100 times better than 930 club as it is much closer to my house, has cheaper beer, smaller, and i never have to pay to park. I go to the 930 club when I feel like I feel like I have to see a band like Jens Lekman or Magnetic Fields. Not because of a love of a venue. If it were so good it would be in Baltimore.

people discuss best baseball stadiums all the time!!!!!!!!
anyhow I was surprised the 930 club did not make the cut as I always thought it was the industry standard.
I think the pollstar award may simply have to do with how many tickets the 930 sells but I am not sure..

FWIW, here's a discussion on a beer forum about baseball.

I wouldn't personally but the list is called 'Best Clubs in America - Venues that Rock' not 'Best Clubs in America you may not know about'.
I agree with you on that point.

My point is that I would enjoy the 930 club a lot more if I lived in DC. Right now I think, geez I have to make that drive on a weeknight. There will be a lot of traffic and by the time I get there all the free parking will be gone and I will have to pay 20 bucks to park.
-

...."all the free parking"?! there are always street spots around the 9:30-- I've never had to pay to park there (and lots of times, I have to squeak in just before the headliner, due to work/etc., so I'm not always an early bird).

Where do you park?
-
usually on 8th street between Barry and V. If that's all parked up, I try 9th St. north of Barry.
There's also typically parking in the neighborhood on the other side of 9th/Florida.

Yeah i typically park on 8th street. But if that is filled up I use the payed lot. I wouldn't walk on 9th street above Barry. That is a long walk in a bad neighborhood. No reason to get killed to save a few bucks.

....bad neighborhood? really? I've never felt unsafe there. Then again, I don't consider 2 blocks a "long walk".
If you consider the area around the 9:30 club to be a "bad neighborhood", then yes, paying for parking is definitely your best bet.

Back when it was the WUST music hall I have seen violent crimes occur on 9th street. I don't know if it happens anymore as I don't park on 9th street since then.

OK, well, if you're going to base your opinions of a neighborhood based on how it was back in the mid-90s, then that's your choice.
Don't go to Mount Pleasant, because I hear there was a sniper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Swann) there once. and riots (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_Washington,_D.C._riot) too.

It is not like I have had a reason to go further north and explore the area. I mean even a couple of years ago their were bums living in the the alley behind the fence on 8th street. To me it appears to be a bad neighborhood. It might not be as bad as it used to be but I have no evidence that it is better.

Not really. But I actually saw someone get assaulted on 9th street. I also saw someone drive their car almost hitting some guy than get out of his car and go after the guy he almost hit. Some cops came up to stop that one. It was a long time ago I will admit but I guess I would need some evidence that the neighborhood is changed.

dc resident here. can confirm this. i was both shot and stabbed today at 6am while i was sleeping in my own bed.

living in baltimore, i find it laughable anywhere around the 930 would be considered 'bad'
although i do remember the WUST days..i was also much younger and not as experienced back then...much less 'street smart'
-
i live in the vanilla-white safe suburbs, but i have to trek through the evil chocolate depths of downtown DC for work.
i get shot and stabbed on a daily basis - on my way to work, and then again on my way back. you people who live far away from here and don't spend time in the city totally have it right. this place is death waiting to happen.
advice: please stay away.

the next thing your going to tell us is that you lived in a paper bag in a septic tank

i enjoy how you assume it is a "white/black" thing. i feel it is a city thing. now stay in "your city", get shot in the gut and fuck off.

I live in Baltimore but not in a bad area like the 930 club is in. I live a block from the county line.

One thing of interest related to parking is that once I was at one of the meter spots and I waited in my car until after the meter was in effect. I got out and no one was around when I came back I had a ticket for parking without paying the meter. I of course refused to pay the ticket. DC government put it on my credit report. I then contacted the credit bureaus and they removed it. This wasn't the first time I had gotten a bogus parking ticket in DC either. And DC is the only place I have ever gotten bogus parking tickets.
I did get pulled over for running a red light a couple of months ago in DC. Which I actually did do. The cop only gave me a warning though.
-
OK so I looked up on the DC Murder Map and in 2010 on two occasions someone was murdered within a block of the 930 club. In 2008 someone was murdered where ShowlistDC told me to park. In 2005 someone was murdered on 8th and Florida. In 2007 and 2008 three people were murdered on 9th in the block below Florida. In 2006 someone was murdered at 10th and V. In 2006 and in 2011 someone was murdered at Georgia and W. And there were a shitload of murders within 3 blocks of the club.
I am not stopped from going to the club because of Crime but I park in the pay lot before wandering the neighborhood looking for free parking. And to advise others that the area is safe is quite dangerous.
Interestingly enough the area west of conneticut avenue in DC seems to be almost murder free.

Funny, I bet most of you weren't living in DC or old enough to go to 9:30 Club shows in 1996/97, when it opened and around the time I worked there. And probably not around to see shows at WUST. That being said, the neighborhood (and the city) were far more transitional then. I couldn't even find a cab at 3 in the AM on a Saturday night after work because there were NO CARS on U Street. Nobody walking either. Can you comprehend that now? The reality is that crime (and murder) can happen ANYWHERE, even in affluent areas (and it does). You're in a city, use your street smarts. Park under a bright light, don't leave anything in the car that is worth taking. Look around you. Have people with you. The 9:30 Club doesn't need Sharon Osbourne's validation to be great. We all now that it's a terrific place to see a show. Lists don't mean anything
For the record, here are some of my favorite clubs to see a concert, and the 9:30 is the first...but here are the others top 5:
1) Belly Up (San Diego)
2) TLA (Philly)
3) The Abbey Pub (Chicago)
4) World Cafe Live Downstairs (Philly)
5) The Double Door (Chicago)
-
(And yes, it was meant to be funny that I said lists don't mean anything and then I added my own...doesn't meant shit but they're fun to rip apart, which you can feel free to do to mine.)
-

OK so don't come to shows at the 9:30 club. Trust me, we won't miss you.
-
"we"? who is we? who the fuck are you; the representation of everybody who goes, owns and speaks for the club?

cranky boardies today...
the area around the 930 is safe enough.. like anywhere you need to have some street smarts...and like anywhere anything could happen to you..but is it lilkely that anything other than people breaking into your car- if you leave stuff visible- will happen if you go to the 930? no way. it is not likely.
I think the murder rate for dc fell to under 100 people last year.... at its peak i think it was over 1000...
i wonder what those complaining about the safety around the 930 would have thought when it opened......back then it was unsafe....but things have changed....

I heard about what went on back then. Let's just say that it was pre-Blowoff, but much more true to the name.

Wow you are old. I just saw Government Issue, Dead Kennedys,, Dagnasty which hardly compares to Malcom X.
I was thinking they should do a worst rock clubs in the country. That might be more interesting.

You are an idiot. Because you tell someone to park in a potential death zone and I prove you wrong you tell me not to come? I will come as often as I want. And when I do I will park within a block of the club. Not wandering around 4 blocks from the club trying to save a few bucks.
Get a real username instead of spamming the board with your piss poor site. Do you know anything about web design? Maybe you should take a course instead of being an azz.

Because you tell someone to park in a death zone and I prove you wrong you tell me not to come?
not that anyone can take you seriously anyways, but it's hard to finish reading your sentence when you start with "park in a death zone" when talking about the club. your own research revealed there were, what, 2 murders in the past 5 or 10 years? i bet the neighborhood you live in has a similar murder rate.
please, for the betterment of humanity: think before you type.

He told me to park on 9th above Berry. There are a lot more than 2 muders in the past 7 years in the area from there to the club. I am not talking about parking in the area around the club. I am stating where he told me there was plenty of free parking. Which looking at a satelitte image looks pretty desolate.

You know you could always take a taxi right to the club door unless ... wait ... y'all aren't afraid Mr. T and Bill Maher still drive cabs?

"potential death zone"!!!!!!!!
that's funny...
the area around the 930 is plenty safe.. maybe you're just one of those white people that freaks out every time you see a black person?
-
I have found that pretty much all the blocks around 9:30 are safe. In 10+ years of coming there I have never had a problem at all. I did see like 3 car windows smashed on a street near the club once a few years back after a sold out show. I heard a victim say "they got my zune"

OK guys. Obvious troll is obvious.
He told me
I'm a "she", not a "he".
this says it all. the dude posts at some absurd rate of like 10 times a day with 500 word scatterbrain responses, yet somehow has never picked up on the fact that showlist does not have a penis.
What difference does it make that showlist is a chick? I figured with all the spamming by her site she had to be a guy.
To me it is an ureadable mess. .And spam can be useful
-
is it an unreadable mess, or do you just not know how to read?
-
Get a real username instead of spamming the board with your piss poor site. Do you know anything about web design? Maybe you should take a course instead of being an azz.
Simple solution: don't use my site if you don't like it.

I don't as using it would be impossible. Just stop spamming this site.
-
Just stop spamming this site.
You too, dude.

I don't spam this site you do. I have never mentioned any of my personal products on here. I made a simple statement about how that clubs in Baltimore are more convienent to me and you started some stupid reply. And when I called you on your stupidity you got all shitty. When you use this site as spam central perhaps you should be nicer to the members of the forum.

showlistdc is a great site, thanks for putting it together. LOL @ "death zone", some people shouldn't leave the house.
-
Atomicfront, I strongly suspect that the majority of this board would stampede to pick showlistdc in any square-off/thunderdome between the two of you so you might elect to shut up.

you're welcome - glad you find it helpful!

Like I care. I didn't start the fight so I am not going to back down from someone who's only contribution is to spam the site. I get it you dont' get attention from females in real life so the Internet is your only option.
-
and your only contribution is clogging up threads and bitching about music preference.
i appreciate the showlist posts, i keep up with it, and she keeps all that shit in a separate thread anyways. you, however, seem to post your ramblings wherever you feel convenient, and good discourse is lost as a result.

Well I'm getting attention from you.
-
she keeps all that shit in a separate thread anyways.
That was my original point to a.front-- my posts about the site are in their own thread, conveniently labelled "showlistdc", so it's pretty easy to avoid it if you don't want to see it. Elsewhere on this board, I'm talking about shows I'm going to (or have been to), same as everybody else.

Actually I provided you with a list of good places to get beer in Baltimore when you asked. And I don't bitch about people about musical preferences to people until they start criticizing my musical taste.

You user name is spam.
-
wow.
-
You user name is spam.
Actually, my user name is branding. But I wouldn't expect the guy who accused me of knowing nothing to understand that.
It is spamming this site. Having a thread unrelated to this site with just your site information on it is spam. Seriously instead of fighting with me why don't you spend some effort on website design. Your site is a good idea but horrible to read.
-
ok you two lovebirds get a room!
;)
-
If you are saying that my very existence on this board is spam, then you will never be happy. Good luck to you, a(f)front.

ShowlistDC,
Aren't you also considered one of the partners of the 9:30 club? I know that various Blogs, etc having been getting shout outs from them of late and couldn't remember if you one of them. I know you got tickets from them to give away, which in itself a nod.

I do work with IMP to give give tickets away to shows, but I don't believe that I'm considered a "partner site" to the 9:30 club.
-
Cool!
Personally I think it's great ShowlistDC posts here and wish more of the promotional partners post here as well, but I have zero influence in that matter

Yeah it would be swell if Brighest Young Things spammed the board as well everytime they "wrote' an article.
-
BYT use to post their ticket giveaways here, so what is your point. A once a week post about a useful site getting updated is fine by me and most of the board. Stop trolling...
-
god i fuckin' so hate hearing about contests giving away tickets to concerts i want to see...
-
between showlistdc posting in her own thread about, you know, SHOWS; and a.front spreading his mental diarrhea over ever single thread... gee, i wonder which one is appreciated more.
atomicfront is like a kid sister whose only means of getting attention is to be annoying.
-
i dont hate black people. or even dislike them. my first girlfriend was black. my first friend at the age of five was a black girl called wendy. i have been fucked by plenty of black guys. god they fuck so great, but you can come back from black. i have never been scared of them but i know they just eat up the fact that so many white people are scared of them. gay people wish that straight people were as equally scared of the queers. the only problem i have with black people . . . is that i believe a great number of black people hate gay people. i mean in your fucking face hate gay people. more than most groups. i have seen it countless times, live and in person. the black person who finds it offensive to humans to be labeled a "n word" have no problem saying faggot every five minutes. thats all. i dont feel safe in cities, because they are cities. whether it is la, boston, dc, richmond, raleigh, miami, ny or any city . . . i do not feel safe. all white cities, all asian cities, all mexican cities, i do not feel safe. i put up with it. end of rant, which really wasnt a rant . . . because i didnt even get to say fuck off to anybody.

cranky boardies today...
the area around the 930 is safe enough.. like anywhere you need to have some street smarts...and like anywhere anything could happen to you..but is it lilkely that anything other than people breaking into your car- if you leave stuff visible- will happen if you go to the 930? no way. it is not likely.
I think the murder rate for dc fell to under 100 people last year.... at its peak i think it was over 1000...
i wonder what those complaining about the safety around the 930 would have thought when it opened......back then it was unsafe....but things have changed....
I started going to WUST in 1985.
I was there in 1974 at the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City.
I was working on the organ sounds with much patience.
I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band.
I told him, "Don't do it that way. You'll never make a dime."
I was there.
I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids.
I played it at CBGB's.
Everybody thought I was crazy.
We all know.
I was there.
I was there.
I've never been wrong.
I used to work in the record store.
I had everything before anyone.
I was there in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan.
I was there in Jamaica during the great sound clashes.
I woke up naked on the beach in Ibiza in 1988.

I started to read this and thought: cool this guy saw Suicide at WUST in 1974. Then I read the rest and typical useless replies in this thread.

at first i thought he was just quoting the lyrics of some cute murphy song . . . then i realized he was just accusing you of claiming to have done everything. either way, im heading home early today. yeah . . . i think i will blow kisses at passing motorists on the way.
-
as long as it kisses... elected republican dude in Tennessee is accused of much worse...
-
i dunno know if trust that James Murphy, dude claimed Daft Punk played at his house... if it's true his house must be pretty big to setup that pyramid in...
next thing you'll know he'll have formed a band
We're gonna be the band that writes the song That makes Israel and Palestine get along
We're gonna write a song as universal as Happy Birthday That makes sure everybody knows, everything is gonna be okay We're gonna take that song, we're gonna play it Eight weeks in a row on Top of the Pops
-
I was there in 1968 in Fremont
Mic Gillette and his buddies in his parents house
They formed a band and called it Tower of Power
I was there
True story and the details are fuzzy (I was 4). Mic's sister was my babysitter.

And yes, this is my singing voice, it's not irony, it's not Rock & Roll,
We're just talking, to the Kids.

You might recognize this song as performed by Jefferson Airplane, in a little rockumentary called "Gimme Shelter," about the Rolling Stones and their nightmare at Altamont. That night the Oakland chapter of the Hell's Angels had their way. Tonight, it's my turn.
