"I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology," Dobson said about Obama.
can we just burn all bibles now, and attempt to live together as friends. or is the money that controls religion and the power within it that people cloak upon themselves, just too powerful?
-
This election is going to be a hard fall for the Religious Right. I expect a lot more quotes like this about both candidates.
-
Going by the lack of responses I'm comforted to know that, like myself, many more people are just so over this bullshit election season.
I think that the presidential race of 2008 will go down in history as the "race of apathy"

I haven't spoken to anyone who actually gives a crap anymore.

there will definitely be more turnout than the past few elections, but we seem to forget that 80% turnout wasn't bizarre during the Gilded Age

Total numbers vs. percentages...I was hedging my bets.

Your attempt at humour fails miserably as usual. But please, explain why you say that?
The right wing republicans don't really care for their candidate, half of the dems can't stand theirs. The media is determined to put Obama in the Whitehouse and most people are just sick of the media and their obsession.
I think it will either be a landslide for McCain because he will get his party to rally round him, or it will be a very low turnout and too close to call.
I think it will get really dirty and ugly when the repuclicans start digging out Obamas dirty laundry.

generally those who live in caves don't hear about what's going on around them
over the last year or so there has been a deafening roar in the media and elsewhere about record voter turnout and unprecedented civic engagement, backed by prognosticators predicting a big turnout this fall
because it seems like none of that penetrated your skull, i rather presumptuously assumed that you had been living in a cave
of course, in my haste, i forget the old saw "correlation is not causation" ... i apologize for extrapolating your abject ignorance onto your choice of living quarters
and on that note: i'm done, i hate arguing politics on here, and i can think of better ways to avoid studying

and do you think that no laundry belonging to the repubs will hit the air? for obama, they'll need to tie scandal directly to him. mccain has the added disadvantage that he has to live down 8 years of bush. his party isn't an asset, as far as the undecided go.
speaking of which:
Report sees illegal hiring practices at U.S. Justice Dept. (http://iht.com/articles/2008/06/24/america/justice.php)
(...)
It appeared to confirm for the first time in an official examination many of the allegations from critics who charged that the Justice Department had become overly politicized during the administration of President George W. Bush.
"Many qualified candidates" were rejected for the department's honors program because of what was perceived as a liberal bias, the report says. Those practices, the report concludes, "constituted misconduct and also violated the department's policies and civil service law that prohibit discrimination in hiring based on political or ideological affiliations."
(...) While the recruitment was once controlled largely by career officials in each section who reviewed applications, political officials in the department began to assume more control, rejecting candidates with liberal or Democratic affiliations "at a significantly higher rate" than those with Republican or conservative credentials, the report says.
(...) Applications that contained what were seen as "leftist commentary" or "buzz words" like environmental and social justice were often grounds for rejecting applicants, according to e-mail messages reviewed by the inspector general's office. Membership in liberal organizations like the American Constitution Society, Greenpeace, or the Poverty and Race Research Action Council were also negative marks.
Affiliation with the Federalist Society, a prominent conservative group, was viewed positively.

I think you'll find there are many more economic conservatives and moderate conservatives who are happy to thave their party back than there are "right wing" or religous conservatives who are upset about McCain getting the nomination. That's the whole point of this thread. The Religious conservatives who used to rule the day are in for a long election season. There are many people who are excited about that, Republican and Democrat.

Which half? Because if you're referring to the "Hillary Half" there was only 1 in one 5 Hillary voters that (or at most 1/3 in some polls) would vote for McCain over Obama, which means 10% or at most 20% of total Dems. No where near 50%.

though you strayed from the topic, which was indeed dead, because i guess most people don't like to be reminded that religion controls them. that's why it was invented in the first place, you know.

Critics of Sen. Barack Obama are trying to build a case that the presumptive Democratic nominee is arrogant, and former Bush adviser Karl Rove is leading the charge.
"He's the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone."
then the what in the f are republicans, like rove and bush, hippies at the diet, frozen, organic, yogurt bar?
-
Wait. When did they let black people in Country Clubs?

Basically he's coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it's corporate or whether it's simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up."

Worst. Analogy. Ever.
Makes sense on no level.
I would like to hear from Mr. Rove how he justifies a conclusion that the happily married father of two and former constitutional law professor is actually a metrosexual mix between Al Czervik and Ty Webb . . . although that guy also sounds like a good candidate.
-
Actually he sounds a lot like me (save for the cigarette).
I would never go to a country club, but you can bet your ass that if I did, my date would hot, I would stand in the corner with a drink, and I would ABSOLUTELY make fun of everybody in the place.
I do the same when I go to a bar, so it's par for the course.

that's the most moronic, self-serving thing i've read in a while. so black politicians have two options? either come across as black-is-beautiful, and not "appeal to the whites", or use any other position (i.e. forget race and deal with the real issues), and thus they're suck-ups to whites? damned if you do, damned if you dont?
he's not appealing to white guilt - he's appealing to people's economic preferences, or foreign policy preferences, or leadership style preferences... why boil it down to race?
why. does. every. fucking. thing. about. obama. have. to.

two senators are backing an anti-gay, amendment to the CONSTITUTION of our country (where all men are created equal) that will say marriage is only between a man and a woman.
these two senators are:
larry craig - compared louisiana to iraq after katrina, "full of corruption and fraud." likes to have sex with men in bathrooms, but is "not gay" and will do anything to stop all gays.
david vitter - replaced another senator who was disgraced by a sex scandal, where vitter stated that it was a prime example why pres. clinton should be impeached. a devoted christian, devoted husband, father of three, and loves to screw hookers with cover-up money. he compared homosexual marriage to hurricane katrina, where he and g. bush denied the rebuilding of low income housing to replace the low income housing which was destroyed.
nice.
-
It says "all men" not "all queens."
Of course, the above quote was really just to mention that I think I saw you at the Breeders show, and began shouting "WALKONBY" at you as you walked past me. Then the guy turned around to look at me and I realized it wasn't you. Only remembering board names can be a real killjoy...and can also get you weird looks.

i would have loved to see you again at that show. i honestly looked and wished to meet forumers, but was too frightened to just go up to people, and say "are you on the board?" some people might take that the wrong way. next time i will find one of those stupid "my name is" stickers.
-
Totally...the first time I "thought" I met the Director, I saw only one black dude at the Stooges show. He looked like a world's strongest man competitor, with huge ass dreads.
I decided against walking up to him and saying "uh...are you the Director?" which was good...turns out that is not the Director.

How about helicopters?...two of the fuckers killed 6 people in Arizona over the weekend.
I had to laugh at Matt Lauer on the Today Show this morning...he called Osama Bin Laden "Obama"!!! Freudian slip if ever I heard one.

cars and highways would need to be banned long before air shows or helicopters. the last two are spectacular, but the first two kill tens of thousands each year... just doesn't make the news 'cause it's so commonplace.

you really find that baseless, raving lunacy to be interesting?
i guess it might be, in that "nut job on a corner with a 'the world will end tomorrow' sign" kinda way...
edit: it's been a bad weekend for 'copters (http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/americas/06/27/guatemala.helicopter.crash/index.html)... maybe they should be banned. would that mean no more Airwolf re-runs?!?

i'm sorry from the start if this offends you, but according to the 2010 census, the government will not recognize legal gay marriages, basically saying that gay people do not exist. the red cross (locally and nationally is running out of blood) but still refuses to take gay people's blood donations because "only gay people get diseases". after 9/11, the salvation army refused to give compensation to the families or partners of gay people killed . . . so the next time i hear a black person say they are discriminated against in this country, i'm going to tell them to go FUCK THEMSELF!
-
walkies, i realize this may take a grandiose act of generosity on your part, but how about BOTH groups are discriminated against?
stepping on top of another oppressed group isn't going to do much to improve the lot of yours.

you are so right. i am done bitching about this stuff. it just makes me me angry, and angry people say stupid things before they think. both groups are treated like shit in this country and others . . . but sometimes it seems that people are only willing to accept black people's plight while kicking the queers to the curb. the end.
and jesus . . . now i know why people listen to cnn, fox news, msnbc, etc.... i just tried to listen to npr news for an hour or so while i cleaned today, and i am officially looking for the shotgun to end my life.

all this reminds me of is PCU (damn, that's another movie i forgot to add) where there's a line of people waiting to get into the concert and each group claims they are the most discriminated against and should be first in line.

Yeah, the fact that they're doing this is really, really offensive. They're not just ignoring the perfectly legal same-sex marriages - they're taking it upon themselves to change the information from "married" to "unmarried partners". So it's not just insulting, it's skewing the data.

number 1 - bush blames dems. for high price of gas last week. uhmm . . . the price of gas has dropped almost seventy cents in less than two months. are they to blame for that as well? does anyone care that this could be a (close to the election) ploy seeing how the voters are saving money at the pump now?

I think we need to write Websters a letter and petition to have the word "Apathy" changed to fit it's new common usage:
"A person so distracted that he chooses not to focus or take action."
Even the most active advocate can cross the line into the world of "Everything and everybody is so fucked up, why vote or try to change it?" Thereby, giving into their worst distracting demons. An over-informed populous, as demonstrated by the last 10 years of internets, can in some ways be MORE apathetic by way of being MORE distracted.
We need to get over the word apathy or at least change the definition.
Now cynicism is a different ball game. If you're a cynic, you might as well be eating wet canned dog foood.

i guess wondering who is the coolest person and what to listen to while having sex is more important.
