Title: Coachella 2014... in case anyone still cares
Post by: sweetcell on January 09, 2014, 11:21:13 am
once upon a time Coachella was a big deal around here.  we would guess at the lineup, collectively blow up when we got it right/wrong, and those going would make a lot of noise.  are those days over?  the lineup announcement is pretty solid IMO - good mix of mainstream and lesser-known.

I'm just hoping this means a US tour for Motorhead in 2014.  My son is dying to see them, but not nearly as much as I'm dying to take him.

I saw The Knife last year. If it's the same tour, then count me out. It was 10% live performance and 90% dancing to their songs.  Still good to see them though.

Jeez.  It is REALLY the Replacements if it's just two of them?  Are you really seeing "The Who" or "Guns N Roses" or "The New York Dolls"?   Don't wish for a band that you missed out on the first time and now are seeing a money-grubbing/compromised version of (Black "Tubby" Francis, I'm looking at you.)

Find the NEW Replacements.  Find the NEW Pixies.  Whatever they may sound like.  And if you like it, then they're great.  It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.  Least of all, the 9:30 board.  Take me, I like The Fratellis.  Who may be the Nickelback of England.

Don't listen to what the blogs and corporate mags like "Maximum Rock N Roll" TELL YOU TO LISTEN TO.  Follow your ears.  You know what magazine I look to to find out about the hottest, hippest music around?

I mean, who ARE those guys?  Has anyone heard of them before?  Are they on Facebook or Twitter?

Brian

I been waiting to see Westerberg for years... I couldn't care less if he goes by "The Replacements" or "The Shit stains"

really after Bob Stinson it arguably wasn't the Mats anyways..

So true. I'd still go see 'em if they came through though.

Once I saw this, I knew that I was better off saving some dough and being more selective about smaller-scale concerts I want to see instead of attempting to do Coachella: http://gawker.com/jimmy-kimmel-gets-coachella-attendees-to-lie-about-liki-478088612

I'm in the same boat as just  hoping to see Paul one of these days. I've missed him each time he's been through in the past (and i like a lot of his recent material, so would have liked to hear it live) and it's been awhile now since he's done anything close to even coming out of his basement much less play some Replacements.

Weird that you didn't mention Foster the People, Lana Del Rey, Brian Ferry, Lorde, and MGMT and instead mentioned the Afghan Wigs and Empire of the Sun.

Anyway this line-up is pretty incredible.  I would go if my idea of a good time was sitting out in extreme heat in the desert.

gee, thats not what I would have thought of the replacements... i mean when i listen to their early records or live boots they sound like a precise metronomic machine of rock..

The 'Mats were notoriously hit and miss. But people forget that when they were on, they were a really fun and great live band.

As a 13 year old this is the song that made me think the Replacements were right up my alley:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV55IwBEa14

And also from Stink, this song hinted at their future greatness:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dlfUpXj3ps

Stink, imo, is a horribly under appreciated record, and "Go" is easily in my top 3 or 4 songs by them.

I wish we could embed youtube videos on this board.

really, B?  you came to that conclusion, once you figured out that in a crowd of 50,000 people you're going to find some nozzles?  do you go for the music, or to interview hipsters? ;D

Stink is great fun. From the humor in the title to the humor in songs like "Fuck School" and "I Need a Goddamn Job" along with some of the more serious songs. It sort of paints them in this period as a crass suburban Ramones.

Songs were unrecognizable so why would you want that?  And Let it Be on album sounds pretty good.  I dont' know how many songs he played on that album.  I think on "I will dare" it was peter buck.

I would try to catch these artists if I was to go (if I got an unexpected promotion at work with a big bonus or won a trip to the fest):

Broken Bells, Bryan Ferry, the Afghan Whigs, the Cult, GOAT, Dum Dum Girls, Wye Oak, Crosses, MGMT, Mogwai, Warpaint, Future Islands, White Lies, Blood Orange, Beck, Neutral Milk Hotel, Fishbone, AlunaGeorge, Superchunk, Daughter, Surfer Blood, Aeroplane, Ratking

Wow, that list was a lot shorter than I thought it would be.

I am really excited!  My girlfriend and I grabbed tickets during the presale after last years Coachella.  I realized this week that I will be celebrating my 10 year reunion from my first Coachella in 2004.  I am hoping it won't be as hot as it was in 04.  We booked our flight and place to stay on Tuesday, so its been an exciting week.

Did you ever see Bob Stinson play guitar in the Replacements? I am guessing you hadn't or you wouldn't be making a big deal about it not being the Replacements without him.

Had a ticket to see the Mats at the old 930 - with Bob - but f'g Paul broke his wrist or hand stagediving in NYC a couple days earlier and they cancelled the rest of their tour.  That would have been their last show in the area with the original line up.

Caught them at the Bayou next time around - with Slim - and they were great.  Drunk, but great.  Its was only when Chris Mars left the band that the shows lost their edge.

This appears to be sold-out.   But just like this forum going on and on about some stupid band who sucked balls 30 years ago and instead ignoring the fact that both Lorde and Lana Del Rey will be performing.  Plus Wye Oak!!! Sad to see it was the Cult playing this for some reason I read the Cults.

I am surprised Wye Oak have yet to announce a Baltimore date. They are doing a whole new set up; with jenn on bass guitar and drummer now doing lead parts on synth instead of bass parts while he plays the drums. I have not seen them since summer 2012 and am ready to remedy that!
