Are these meant to be bands that I could see and just haven't yet or bands from a different generation that due to my age I missed the boat?

My concept was actually neither, moreso I was listing bands that I had least theoretically had the opportunity to see but because of death or band break up will never see.

Gotcha... well, if a band is still playing or has been playing in the past 20 years, I've probably seen most that I've wanted to see. Due to my youth and good looks, I've missed dozens of bands from the 50's through the 70's.

My first concert ever was Crosby Stills Nash and Young at Foreman Field (ODU) in the 70s, that is if you don't count a Barbie Benton right to life concert at the Lincoln Memorial when I was still sentenced to catholic school so I could have probably seen most of the 50s - 70s acts, but you do have me on the good looking part.

Obviously, brah... why else would you see the Dead?
Definitely on my list as well or some late 70's JGB.
-
1) Smiths - 1986 was outside George Washington and the cheapest ticket anyone was selling was 35 bucks and I thought it was too much.
2) U2 - 1984 went to ticketmaster at the end of the day instead of the in the morning when they played Constitution Hall. If I went first thing I would have gotten tickets. Tickets to expensive these days.
3) Minor Threat - They broke up right before I got into hardcore.
-
Bowie
-
Sinatra
Garcia
Domino (I tried.. he bailed on Jazz Fest the year I went down)
-
I regret not seeing those in person but I'm not sure it would have been "top" concerts in their late years (well Joao is still alive of course)
Joao Gilberto
Johnny Cash
Serge Gainsbourg
The indie band (or musical experience in the last 15 years) that I most regret never seeing is Rachel's
and I guess nothing could beat Velvet Underground in 1967, although it is not like I could have been there.
-
a couple of recent bands stick out to me... i've either had work commitments, travel, show conflicts, or simply i couldn't get tickets. hopefully i'll have another chance over the next few years to cross some of these off the list.

This goes for me as well. Still could have seen Circle Jerks, Black Flag, etc but this is the one that bothers me.
Nirvana - could/should have gone 11/18/91 at the old 930. I wasn't in town when they last played the area.
Jeff Buckley makes 3.
Edit: had a ticket to see the Replacements with Bob Stinson but the show got cancelled. I was fully aware if their drunken performances and would have loved it.

3 bands/artists I'm glad I got to see:

Elliott Smith
Pulp
Daft Punk
I got to see Elliott with Heatmiser, once solo, twice electric. He was/is one of my very favorites. Can't wait to see the documentary this weekend.
Got to see Pulp 3 times....once opening for Blur, then headlining the 9:30, then at Tibet. They were always great. I think my favorite was when they opened for Blur.

LOL, no I'm sorry...just wanted to say that those are good choices and that I like your taste. I'm sure that I have told the Pulp story before. I saw Jarvis Cocker on the street before I saw them and (remember, this is before the internet and before you know what EVERYONE looked like before you saw them) and I thought "who is THAT??" And then he was on the stage and he was one of the most enigmatic and random people I had ever seen on a stage. He basically ate a bunch of fruit and it was fantastic. There a couple way older guys totally geeking out on Candida's keyboard. So much fun.
As for Elliott, I saw him 3 times in 2000. He started off looking like he did on the cover of Figure 8. He even wore the "LA" sweatshirt that he had on the cover. By the end he dropped weight and looked like Jesus. The last song I heard him perform was a cover of "Don't Fear the Reaper". I was stunned to see how much he changed over the course of 9 months.

I have seen Pulp and Daft Punk. Pulp in the 90's at the club in their prime and they were pretty good. Daft Punk with some giant pyramid was not all that great and I didn't stick around for the whole show.

Fun to see that there are other Boo Radleys and Jesus Jones fans.
And I agree that seeing the Ramones without Dee Dee is not really the same thing. I saw the version without Dee Dee...it felt like they were just going through the motions. But I can say I saw 'em.

Regret not seeing:
Smiths
Libertines (with Pete, but maybe there's a chance in the future?)
MBV
Honorable mention to the Stone Roses - I'd like to go but I know I'd be disappointed
Ones I'm glad I've seen because I don't know if I'll ever get another chance:
Pulp
Manics
Massive Attack
Prince
-
Them Crooked Vultures (Coulda gone but that price tag....)
Faith No More (Hope they play more reunion gigs at some point)

To add an interesting anecdote here, when I was in high school there was no middle school. Elementary school was 1-6 and high school was 7-12. During my 6 years at high school, the band director was personal friends with Buddy Rich. Rich came to my school every year for those six years and performed a free concert for the students. Like a total dumb ass I never went. This was back in the early 70s when my weekly consumption of marijuana was about ¼-½ pound counting just personal use. I am guessing that there was a direct connection between these facts.

Elliott Smith

Elliott Smith was one of the worst shows I ever saw. It was awful. Awful crowd, he was a mess, the band were jerks to the crowd. Horrible.
-
I wasn't allowed to go to shows until I was 18 except for the Screaming Trees/Soul Asylum/Spin Doctors show at Hershey Park when I was 14.
So, I am sad I never got to see
Nirvana
Rage Against the Machine
The Smiths
But, I did get to see Bowie twice, so that's good.

Yeah... I got kind of screwed in my teens due to not having a major city within 80 miles... I only saw about 10 shows from age 14 to 18.

Was this one of the 9:30 Club shows? I think you would have loved his solo acoustic shows at the Black Cat. You could hear a pin drop. Nobody would say a word. As soon as he was done with a song there'd be thunderous applause, then everyone would stop almost as if they were afraid they'd miss something he'd say or do.

I missed that one and at the time I was really bummed, but it sounds like the shows were pretty average. Both of the 9:30 Club shows in 2000 for Figure 8 were great.
This is pretty what how I remember it sounding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRwZ8PUClRw

i'm surprised no one has mentioned James Brown. that's a show i'm still kicking myself for missing... i assumed he'd be back. he always came back.

I saw James BRown at the 930 in the late 90s. I'm glad I did but felt he was a bit over the hill...
-
How about the shows you went to but that you got so drunk that you layed on the ground trying to get up and couldn't see the band or the shows that you made out with some chicks you just met and didn't pay attention to the band and how although it is fun making out with two girls on the MPP lawn it wasn't worth missing the Cure's set.
-
i saw james brown, at bonnaboob, and then after that, right into, neil young and crazy horse. beat that.

Saw James at the club a number of years back. It was the first time I brought both of my kids to the club. Saw him again in C'ville front row absolutely dead center. It was September of the year he passed away.

Buddy came to my HS often, as well as Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman and Stan Kenton - that was 'the circuit' for those guys - one nighters in a crappy bus, too.
Beta Band (damn you Bull Run)
post-Clash Strummer (always 'next time')
Chet Baker (or maybe not)

I wish I'd gone to see Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros..
Hell yeah. I was lucky to catch him once in NYC on a pre mescaleros, post clash show.
But I was always like, "I should see him tonight, he's my f'n hero...but for sure he'll be through for another show." I can only imagine those 930 shows were awesome.

That Fort Reno Fugazi show...I was in high school and my mom would not let me go. It must have been a school night or something. Little did I know that was it for them grrr.
That last Cramps show at 9:30 was awesome. Really glad I went to that. It was pretty expensive for me at the time ($35 maybe?) but the opening bands were great and Lux was hilarious. I remember him saying how DC had the best crack (his lips looked a little brown and burnt hahaha) Poison Ivy looked so annoyed with him hahaha.
I never got to see RATM in their heyday but they toured with the Rock The Bells festival in 2007 and I made a point to go up to NYC to see them. Wu Tang Clan, the real MF DOOM, Black Star, and lots of other great rappers and groups were there as well. Even though it rained for several hours it was a great experience.
-
what year was the last Fugazi show at Fort Reno?
I saw them there once but I doubt it was their last

How could I have left these guys off? Yeah I'm that fucking old.

I had been thinking the same thing actually. I have seen a very good number of the bands mentioned.

Seeing some of these lists makes me realize how lucky I am to have seen so many bands over the years.
Saw a show last night with a buddy of mine from college...we played the "have you seen...?" game and through the course of the conversation we realized we both have seen some pretty spectacular stuff over the years.
He saw Johnny Cash, Beck on the Mellow Gold tour at American University (the Tavern, NOT Bender Arena), The Ramones, a bunch of fun shows at the old 9:30 (Weezer, the Melvins, the Cramps).
-
Led Zeppelin. I had tickets for the Presence tour, at Madison Square Garden, as a senior in high school but caught the measles. I did get out of a calculus final, though.
The Band, with Robbie Robertson. I could've done this on their last tour as we were allowed to go to concerts with friends at age 16. Saw the ad, thought about it.
Pink Floyd, with Roger Waters. I tried to get tickets to The Wall and Animals tours, but was shut out. They had a mail order system.
(Also, the Clash with Mick Jones. I saw them post-Mick but they were a shell of former selves by then.)
