:mad:
is there something going "on" against the black cat. this is the second article involving a guy shot by kids, where the black cat's name was mentioned. if the guy was shot in adams morgan, then why is almost stated in the first sentence of the article, " . . . had just left the black cat when it happened." to a dc outsider who may not know where adams morgan is, it sounds like he was shot near the black cat. hence, don't go to the black cat.

what article are you talking about? the one linked by Arthwys doesn't mention the BC at all.

and i love how to some people in dc, three blocks equals nowhere near.

"Both Brian and his friend, they were incredulous. They looked like kids. The gun looked like a toy. One said, 'What?' Brian said, 'Are you serious?' and with that he was shot," said Adele Stan, the victims' friend.

Um.... 17th and Euclid is rather more than 3 blocks from the Cat.... I'd say 12 blocks or so northwest.

returning to the good ol days of the late 80's in DC...im staying in alexandria.

darn those freemason forefathers. dc road memorization is hard.
-
It is a bit unlucky for the reputation of the Black Cat though. I guess these two left the Cat and walked all the way up to Adams Morgan? If the shooting happened all the way up there, why mention the Black Cat? Perhaps it is a consipracy...

let me help you (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=1811+14th+St.+NW,+Washington,+DC&daddr=17th+Street+and+Euclid+Avenue,+washington,+dc&sll=38.920087,-77.035789&sspn=0.00793,0.014763&ie=UTF8&z=15).
IMO, "nowhere near" is a valid assessment.
-
looking at that map, isn't it stupid not to just call a cab to take you wear you need to be.
"save a buck and give it to the kid who robs you." should be the motto of all dc cabs.
-
i left a comment on the nbc4 website for their bad reporting. we'll see if they post it.

That's what you get for going to Adams Morgan for a jumbo slice instead of hitting Manny and Olga's!
I honestly don't know why mentioning of the Black Cat was needed either. Especially with all the wonderful things <img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e8/Jimgraham2.jpg/180px-Jimgraham2.jpg" alt=" - " />
has done with shutting down clubs and using the media to overhype things.

be careful. there are two 'washingtondc' names in there. confusing.

ooh, i just posted there again. that was fun. but i won't again. i felt as if i had to be all prim and proper with my words, like some secret space in time was watching what i write. of course that could be happening here too.

<rant>
it bothers me that this story is headlined 'blogger robbed, shot...' and other places have interchangeably used blogger, journalist, etc.
anyway, it makes it sound like he was on duty and the shooting was in the line of work. which wasn't the case at all, just wrong place. wrong time.
if he were a construction worker, or it were a maid or any other line of blue-collar work this wouldn't happen. you would never read 'maid robbed, shot' unless it happened during their line of work.
his job has nothing to do with why he was robbed and shot. ugh.
</endrant>

i'm sure you're aware of perception. and perception says that blue collar is not cool. that's why "jobs" like "bloggers" are in the headlines. blue collar reminds people that fun isn't fun anymore. i know. :roll: i enjoy no collar.

DC roads start with the alphabet and then go up, in alphabetical order. And then they go into words, and those go in alphabetical order. So Euclid is after Clifton, but before Fairmont. And just from the name, you can tell that it's quite a long way from the Black Cat, and from the numbered street (those also go in order), you can also tell that it's three blocks to the west (which is where I assume you got "just three blocks away.") The whole city works this way.

yes, but the point is that it was a minor (very, very minor) "celebrity" who was the victim. if it was a notable maid who was shot, then it probably would have indeed said "maid shot." his job has nothing to do with why he was robbed and shot, but it does have to do with why people would care more than any other mugging.

I think that's true, and the mention of the Black Cat is probably to answer questions of why he was out walking at 2am. Although it's unfortunate the Cat will be linked in people's minds.

And dayam, most of those comments on the NBC4 site are stupid... I don't think most of the people who spend their day commenting on news sites are dealing with a full deck. [/b]
Don't forget the streets go from A-Y missing X and J I think, but don't quote me on that. Then they go alphabetically using two syllable words then start again from A using three syllable words.

Don't forget, motherfucker, the streets go from A-Y missing X and J I think, but don't quote me on that or I'll find out where you live and kick your ass. Then they go alphabetically using two syllable words then start again from A using three syllable words. That's called the fuckin' third and second alphabet.[/b]
good point, if a bit strident

i have no idea what was going through those thugs' heads (or veins), but who the hell shoots someone for a cell phone? only explanation i've been able to come up with is to make sure they didn't call for help. is there really a market for cells that have been reported stolen?

I think a (now-former) co-worker of mine said something once about having gotten her cell phone off eBay for some ridiculously low price that made her think it had been fenced.
Apparently she had no ethical qualms on this count.
:(
-
huh. i once bought a "lightly used" cell phone on ebay for something like a third of the price that it cost through sprint. when i brought it in to be activated, i was informed that this handset was reported stolen (they have to look up the serial#), and therefore they wouldn't activate it. i was lucky in that the seller refunded me my money, swearing he didn't know. caveat emptor. then again, sprint phones don't use simm cards so maybe this doesn't apply to simm-using carriers.
-
wow. you guys still talking about this. let's all go down to black cat tonight with our cell phones in the air, wave them like we just don't care, yelling black cat is not the victim here, into the air.
-
Not to blame the victim, but if someone is pointing a gun at you and wants your phone, just give it to them. And don't be taking shortcuts through the back streets of Adams-Morgan at 2am unless you know what you're doing. 17th and Euclid has been sketch for as long as I can remember.
The story as I understand it is that the Blogger reacted to the kid with the gun, by saying you've got to be kidding me. The kid probably hadn't been expecting any resistance and freaked out. People wielding weapons usually aren't the smartest people out there, don't try to argue with them. A wounded ego is better than a body full of lead. If it makes you feel better, someone leading that kind of lifestyle is going to either be dead or in jail within the next year or two, guaranteed.
-
but what about the story involving a kid who went to high school close to where i live, and he was walking in richmond with his girlfriend near vcu. a mugger. young. the transaction. no problems, no resistance. walking away, walkingonby. then shot by the robber for what i guess was the fun of it. so you cannot understand what any of them ("them" being punks who rob and shoot people; don't put colour based assumptions in my words) are thinking at any given time. like in the running man. we are all now arnold in a giant game of richard dawson's control.
-

Well, that can happen too. But in a situation like this, it's all about improving your odds, and the odds are better, if you give the mugger what he wants, you will be OK.
Most people in the crime world try to avoid bringing too much police attention down on their heads... cops are too busy to follow up on a simple robbery, but when someone gets shot, then it goes way up the priority list.
If it's your bad luck to get some psycho who shoots people for fun, then there's not so much you can do.
