I know "Loveless", "Nevermind", "Out of Time", etc. were released in 1991, but I listen to this one far, far more often and I'd have to say it may very well be my favorite LP of that year.

This song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCFbUDZ_zv8) was inspired by the DC area pharmacy chain.  True story.

"I just wrote a song called 'The People's Drug.' I got the title from a pharmacy chain in Washington. It's about how religion used to be called the opium of the people, but now it's pop music. It is music without ideas or charm . . . music that has been filtered through synthesizers to remove the humanity and the heart. I just think it's time to go back to what made rock 'n' roll important in the first place."

Unrelated but just came into my mind...at the same club right around the same time I saw Firehose on the Flying the Flannel tour.  I passed by Mike Watt walking through the club .  I was wearing a flannel shirt and he said "Hey man nice flannel!"

Carter got huge in England and I think they felt that the success was a bit too much for them. I actually stayed with Fruitbat in London once at his flat in Brixton. They're really the nicest people you could ever meet. I think that in the end they were just 2 regular guys that wanted to make the kind of music they wanted. They played their very final reunion gig in November of last year. I wanted to go...they were one of my absolute favorite bands to see live. I saw them in 1993 and it was just fantastic. Still unlike anything I've seen. 2 guys with guitars and strobe lights shouldn't sound exciting on paper, but they had so much energy and were great performers.

Technically, this compilation was released in 1992 but all three EPs were releases in 1991 and I think it's their best music and forms a superb LP. Really deserves to be mentioned.

well, how where you to know it would sink without a trace?... very few championed this album when it came out so I'm glad to see you recognize you were one of the few that saw its greatness....whatever happened to those guys anyway? it seemed almost like a one and done deal.

I know this will bring some laughs, but a total guilty pleasure of 1991 is still "Schubert Dip" by EMF. Aside from the smash hit, the rest of it is actually pretty fun raver pop that makes me think of summertime. As does this.

A lot of people trash this (including the band), but I think it's actually really solid. Loved it when it came out, still listen to it.

I'd say this was U2's finest moment, and it came out around a really formative and positive time in my life...so I've got nothing but good things to say about it even if a lot of those reasons are personal. I still remember hearing "One" for the first time and thinking it was one of those perfectly-written songs. Say what you will about U2, but this is a great LP.

(And a huge YES to the Orbital's self-titled LP. Great stuff.)
