Can't remember where it is on this board, but somewhere I explained my theory that no band had more harm to America's GDP than the Grateful Dead, despite selling millions of albums and playing thousands of shows.

alternate theory: the Dead improved the GDP by providing a collection service for degenerates. these people weren't going to contribute to society anyways, the Dead helped keep them out of the way of those doing something with their lives. i call this the "landfill theory."
in the positive side, the peanut butter and hacky sack industries would be shadows of their current selves without the Dead.

Birkenstock is a privately owned German Company.

sounds like a pretty lousy theory.

Poppycock.
Which poor performance of one of your twins are you going to excuse because of this "landfill theory" of yours? I need to have a conversation with your missus.

Additionally, it's difficult to quantify the Dead's contribution to medical spending. A 28-day stay in rehab costs more than a year of college tuition.

OK, now we're getting somewhere.

Poppycock.
i have no problem with you disagreeing with my theory, but any chance you could back up your point of view with something other than a cuss word from the 1880's?
Which poor performance of one of your twins are you going to excuse because of this "landfill theory" of yours?
hopefully neither. but as a stark economic realist, should either one decide that selling grill cheese sammiches in a parking lot is their preferred life pursuit, i will be grateful that institutions such at the Dead are around to keep them off the streets. the landfill theory is neither an excuse nor an explanation for the behavior, just a way of understanding what happens with a certain segment of society.
I need to have a conversation with your missus.
i am being 100% serious when i say that she would appreciate it. lemme know if you don't have her number (hasn't changed).

Nice. I had originally written "Poppycock, Dick." but was afraid you'd think I was actually calling you a dick, which I wasn't. It's the punchline to an old Adam Corolla joke from when he was on LA radio in the early 90's that I had forgotten about, but was then reminded of when a Harry & David package arrived over the holiday included...Poppy Cock.
As for the rest of it, I'm calling Child Protective Services first, and then your wife second. I'm pretty sure I still have her filed away under her maiden name. I'll have to check.
-
somehow i suspect that you keep all young ladies filed under their maiden names, forever. including the one you're about to un-maiden.

Talk about the dead, or shut up.

I'm sorry I said that. Yada, makes me crazy.

so I heard tickets went from $95 to $250 (not counting VIP)

I am nostalgic for the days when people would sleep in their cars and sell veggie chili and nitrous in the parking lot to fund their Dead shows rather than standing on the cyber street corner begging for $3,000 handouts.

I hope not re: Donna and why would Robert Hunter perform with them?
Well he should be acknowledged bigtime .. he only wrote the lyrics for almost every great song they ever had.. try to imagine the Dead without him
I fear they are writing him out of this reunion... it would be a great shame..
as far as Donna: she was in the Dead for years....she is still alive..she should be there and on stage for a song or two..its the right thing to do

I'm not denying Hunter's importance to the Grateful Dead, however, he's never performed with them... so why start now?

Re: Donna, I just find her voice grating.
i never said he should perform ... but he does need to be acknowledged ON THE STAGE
it almost seems like they've been trying to write him out of the history for a while now...since 2003's tour i can't think of any linkages...that is weird.
I think Hunter may be the best American lyricist -in the post tin pan alley period- along wth Dylan and Cohen (who I realize is Canadian).....
the Dead, without him, would not exist.. he's alive and well..he should be there and I'm not talking about just hanging out with Bill Walton in the VIP section
-
and while Hunter may not have "performed" with them he was a part of the Dead... he is on the cover of Workingmans Dead for example
-
still bummed that DC show was cancelled
i wrote his booking agent this week asking for a DC show sometime...
he wrote back "Eventually, eventually"...we'll see...

please post so we can all commiserate

I got rejected, too. Not feeling good about the odds of getting in to this one. :'(

a good friend of mine who has been doing the mail order thing for DECADES got rejected.. i'm talking old school hardcore deadhead who would usually get GREAT seats
I think they've changed the way they do it. and some of the personnel doing it if not all have changed..

I am curious why they decided to do this in Chicago?
this really should have been in San Francisco...not even a question
-
Ok....answering my own question:
will reunite at Chicago?s Soldier Field, nearly 20 years to the day of the last-ever Grateful Dead concert, which took place at the same venue.
Still lame...they are not celebrating the last concert 20 years ago....they are celebrating 50 years of the dead!
-
lastly...anyone have a clue HOW MANY will be available online to the general public on February 28th via Ticketmaster.
if any?

their argument was that Chicago is in the middle and easy to get to from anywhere....

◾Wow! We re excited (and humbled) to discover that your enthusiasm for Fare Thee Well matches our own! We have received an overwhelming number of mail order ticket requests. In an effort to honor the history and spirit of the Grateful Dead, we are going to try to fill as many of these orders as possible. This means there will be no other pre-sales. In order to give the good folks at GDTS TOO time to sort through the 60,000+ (!) envelopes received so far
There will be a general admission pit directly in front of the stage (pit tickets are mail order only), a second general admission floor section behind the pit and reserved seating throughout the stadium.
So lots of tickets still to go on sale...
-
this really should have been in San Francisco...not even a question
It really should've taken place on an easily sinkable barge about 15 miles off the Atlantic coast. Best case scenario, we remove our nation's filthy jobless hippie problem; worst case scenario, at least those that survive were forced to take a bath for the first time in weeks.
-
well obviously the "there will be lots of tickets on sale" is a lie unless they are planning on adding shows
i mean do the math ..60,000 envelopes times X tickets (2 ? 4? was there a limit)... is going to take care of most of the supply
as far as donna.... while i agree that i don't care for her singing thats not the point.. point is she was a part of the dead for many years..some of their greatest.... she should at least be recognized... maybe people dont' like her now? maybe they never did? but the guys in the dead had her in the band for years...
anyways, i don't expect her or hunter to be recognized...but who knows....
-
your logic is flawed as they only fulfilled a small portion of those 60k entries
They said: a second general admission floor section behind the pit and reserved seating throughout the stadium.
so I'd imagine that only 1/4 of the seats were done by mail order
-

yes, let's do some actual math.
first, they said they got 60,000 applications, and based on feedback most folks were rejected. let's assume they filled 20,000 orders (a high estimate IMO, i suspect it's less) and on average each one was for 3 tickets... that's 60,000 tickets.
soldier field holds 61,500 for football games. since there will be a floor GA, let's make that 65,000 (again, conservative number IMO); so x 3 shows = 195,000 total ticket.
60k/195k = 31% of tickets allocated in presale.
you can play around with the assumptions, but i don't think we'll get near your dire prediction.
-
well I wasn't like math major or anything....
what i heard was they got so much response they even decided to do away with the TM presale that was scheduled originally..
i don't think there will be as many tickets as you think left... i also think they got more than 60K applications.. they said they had counted up 60K so far and would do their best..why are they rejecting people then? are they bound by TM to place them onsale at the TM sale? is that a part of the "equation"
but good luck to everyone!
-
They only offered the pit, the $200 tickets and the $80 tickets (plus fees) via mail-order. If they got ALL of the seats in those price ranges, that still looks like less than half of the stadium (based on the seating chart they initially released.) The presale wasn't via TM. It was through some other service, which makes me think they were running that one as well. My guess is that they were planning to sell any leftover mailorder tickets via the presale. It quickly became obvious that wouldn't be necessary, so they scrapped it. TM should have about 1/2 of the tickets for sale next weekend - minus whatever is set aside for the VIP/Travel packages. Take out what the scalpers will be getting and that will leave about 50 tickets per night available to the public. :(
And for the record - I hope they include Donna for a few songs.
-
For a seasoned concert veteran, hutch is having a hard time comprehending this presale info.
-
I figured hutch was just gonna give Phil a call and get his name on the guest list.

This is why I wont try for Chicago tix. I'm spoiled by the Dark Star Orchestra. Last night's incredibly awesome setlist from Asheville, NC. is below. I wasn't there but I heard it cooked. The last show I saw was the first night of the January 9:30 run. Tremendous 4 hour performance from 1972! I'm not sure this band they're calling the Dead could pull off either of these recreations. For me, the Grateful Dead was mostly about Jerry Garcia. The last thing I want to see is Phil or Bobby attempting to sing a Jerry chestnut. The DSO members are consummate musicians and devout students of the music of the Grateful Dead. I can see them locally and afford-ably at least 3 times a year in fairly intimate venues. I'm sure the "reunion" will be a fun party but IMHO its just not worth the hassle/expense of getting tix and then getting there.
5/3/69 Winterland
He Was A Friend Of Mine, Cryptical Envelopement-> Drums-> The Other One-> Cryptical Envelopement-> Doin' That Rag, Me & My Uncle
Dupree's Diamond Blues*, Sitting On Top Of The World, Dark Star-> Saint Stephen-> William Tell Bridge -> The Eleven-> Turn On Your Love Light, E: It's All Over Now Baby Blue
* Jeff on acoustic
Filler: Easy Wind, Golden Road, Viola Lee

That setlist looks amazing. I'm sure they killed it. That '72 show at 9:30 was just nuts.
I'm still hoping to go to Chicago, but I won't go without tickets and I won't pay a fortune for them. While it's exciting that the core-four are getting together one last time - I see it as more of a celebration of all-things-Dead for one last time. The music, the band, the family, the scene... It just gives us that one more chance at having it all and being together (minus that one giant empty spot.) The performance is important, but it's not the only reason I want to be there. It's to celebrate and say goodbye.

It was Pigpen's band first.. he was the leader....
another guy written out of the history....

of all the people, i have met, who have said they are going . . . i feel it will have the essence of the first two bonnaboobs, where the music lot scene and the fact this is only one band to see and not some cluster crap of having to schedule out fifty bands to see over three days, will cause this event to be a pretty special experience. the parking lot, hotel, getting in and out of venue, the drunked / drugged out fuckerupings that will take place throughout, experience . . . well that's what happens and you better be able to deal with it; like when phish plays hapmton for three days, but times one hundred thousand. yes, the scene, the lot scene, the overall concert scene has changed so much due to change of the culture and mental capacities of people in general, but i think it would still be something that at last minute, if asked by a friend who would really wants to go and needs a side kick to take it on . . . yeah, i would go.

I, might be wrong, but all packages through CID, are sold out.

Kinda feeling like I should try to get some tix and make some coin of these smelly hippies who drive up in their BMW's
Don't get me wrong, I'm great friends with some of them...still doesn't mean I can use capitalism to belittle them

I don't think these tickets have the ability to "make coin." Shitty seats are already quite expensive and no one is paying top dollar to sit at the top of Soldier Field.
The pricey tickets are already basically at the tipping point of what's affordable, so not much room for margin there either. It at least would be good practice for future tough ticket as I know you're not too savvy in that dept. ;D Good luck!

$2360 - includes 6 x $215 tickets (great seats) and 3-nights in a 4-star hotel in downtown Chicago. I had a cheaper hotel lined-up, but that probably would have only saved me about $100/night.

Yep - a pair of tickets for each of the 3 shows. Going all 3 nights.

nice

I, like meltdowns as much as the next guy. But, the meltdowns associated with not being able to get tickets to the shows, that I am reading online, are beyond the price of admission.
-
There, seems to be a huge consensus, that the dead really fucked this up, and that scalping is adding major insults to the fire. Of course, such speak is coming from people, who didn't get tickets or who got ones behind stage. Lol.

and the idea of seeing Kreutzmann, Lesh, Weir and the rest paying tribute in their own way in their own projects appeals much more to me than seeing them in a fake "Grateful Dead"

Stay off the drugs Yada...seriously. This is a great lineup in a great venue that JERRY PLAYED REPEATEDLY with the JGB and you know what? Its in our area!
We can wait for further info to see how long acts will play.. heck maybe they'll have two stages..at this point we don't know...
but Soldier Field, to me, compared to this seems like a ROOT CANAL.
-
that many bands, "Additional performers will be confirmed in the coming weeks"... maybe there will be a second stage?
p.s. yada, hutch - you disagree, we get it...
-
Anyone else remember those Jerry's Birthday festivals they used to do out at Wilmer's Park? Good times.
-
Widespread Panic a third or fourth tier jam band?
Walkie must have had a heart attack
-
I would not be surprised if some Phish showed up...
I doubt Bob Dylan would come BUT he is off the road May 12th on... not impossible...would be unannounced though...

About Jerry Garcia:
Jerry Garcia (1942-1995) created an unparalleled legacy across the American landscape, most notably in his role as a founding member, singer, songwriter and lead guitarist of the Grateful Dead. Garcia?s unmistakable guitar tone enchanted multitudes of ?Deadheads? throughout the band?s 30-year career and beyond. His work with the Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way, Legion of Mary, Garcia/Grisman and projects with Merl Saunders only scratch at the surface of his musical influences as he set out to master the Great American Songbook. In June of 2015, Garcia and Robert Hunter?s collaborative partnership will be recognized with an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Unequivocally devoted to the craft of music, Garcia continues to inspire future generations through the body of work he has left behind and his creative spirit.

Sorry, I was referring to the show in Chicago, so only 2,000 miles. But I agree, good call.

unfortunately I'm now tending to agree with Yada... oh boy... sucks..sucks to be wrong..sucks that it is not what i want...
I mean four hours to get through all these acts? they'll be lucky to have each act play one song! unless i'm missing something this is really just a made for TV/DVD special that those in attendance will be footing...
-
still glad its at Merriweather but I'd like to know a little more what I'll be getting for my money here.....
-
Talking to myself again I guess...
I just assumed it was like an all day Jerry festival.. even when they did Bobfest the acts got a few songs....

oh please. i do it to get a rise outta lady hutch. i've been to a few jamband shows. if i somehow got tickets i would go to the chicago shindig (mostly to check out the scene). that doesn't mean we can't make fun of the seething mass of stereotypes that are the deadheads.

cool! he's a great brewer indeed, i've had many of his brews and not a single one has disappointed. i'm brewing this weekend - talk to me in a few weeks, we'll see if sean still holds the "best homebrewed IPA" title ;D

Fans can look forward to two Thievery Corporation Live sets; one with songs from our deep catalogue of original tunes and another incorporating full Grateful Dead numbers and innovative inclusion of sounds from the Dead into some of our adapted classics.
-
I think they saw the demand and thought "let's make more money". Which is their choice, but don't call it the end and say it's not really the end.
-
so confusing.. i thought chicago was it...
maybe they saw demand was hot and decided to do a more full scale tour? but with john mayer? ugh...
It is looking like they will break off into groups again. Phil Lesh & Friends seems to be starting up again. That John Mayer pic had Mike Gordon playing bass with Bob Weir. I guess they will do something just not all together.
-

It looks like your question was answered already, but this is the "last" time the "core four" are playing together... Lesh will still limp along with P+F line ups, Bobby will fall off the stage every few months, etc.

LOL!
-
loved the fact the Sirius grateful dead channel played all three shows. but the mindless banter between the hosts before each show was god awful.
-
The first 2 shows in Chicago were fantastic. The final show wasn't quite as good, but it was fine. An amazing weekend for sure. I heard the last few songs from Sunday on XM yesterday as we were coming home from the airport. They should have tried to mix in a little more crowd noise, because it doesn't come close to catching the energy that was in the stadium. I can't wait to go back and listen to them all again.
-
I watched the Bob Weir doc on Netflix the other night and by god did I love it. Granted, a lot of it was my pleasure centers getting triggered by nostalgia, and they totally ignored/glossed over how close Bob came to getting kicked out of the band in the early years. But it was even more entertaining than that doc about 18 year olds making amateur porn in Miami.
-
I thought Friday and Sunday were best, but too close to really rank. Great weekend and great city. It was like the whole place was one big GD festival. You couldn't walk a block without seeing a GD shirt.
-
It was funny listening to the O's commentators on the radio and tv talking about the dead shows.
Glad to hear it was fun. Wish I could have been there.
Need to watch the Bob Weir doc. He was hot way back in the day.
-
I'm really happy these shows turned out awesome as I was a bit concerned after the Santa Clara shows last week. This is one of the few times in many years that I'm super disappointed about missing a run of shows.

as expected, those Dead and Company tickets are basically free on stubhub right now. I may be tricked into attending.
SIDEHUTCH, TAKE NOT OF A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF SCALPERS BEING SCREWED HERE.

Show is a week away and you can already get tix for $12 each. They're not good seats, but that's still pretty telling. Can't imagine prices will not go up.
That said, I'm pretty impressed how close Mayer's guitar sound is to Jerry's. This does not sound bad at all.
Loved that J Mascis-lookin dude on keyboards.
I think I may end up going to this.

yup... what I said above. Will be hard to pass up for under $20! If I'm in town, I'm there!
-
I'm not sure what I meant by saying "Can't imagine prices will not go up." I don't think I meant to include "not" but it's hard to say and I'm already bored with the whole notion.
Anyway, nostalgia and the chance to hear some sick jamz might be enough to get me there. I figure just showing up and getting a sidewalk ticket will be the way to go. Might even get a miracle.
