i haven't been to the movies since iron man came out, and want to play catch up this weekend. on my radar:
Wall-E
Incredible Hulk
Hancock
these strike me as the kind of movie you want to see on the big screen (wall-e maybe a bit less than the others, but still).
suggestions? confirmation of choices? general snarkiness?

When did Iron Man come out?
You should see "The Fall" on the big screen.

It's playing at Landmark E Street, Landmark Bethesda, and Shirlington.

Wall*E, definitely... I don't know anyone who has seen it that disliked it.
-
wall-e was amazing, loved it.
i'd also love to see gonzo, the hunter thompson doc. looks good.
-
loved wall-e....
I've heard nothing but horrid reviews on hancock
-
wanted was good and so was hancock
-
ended up seeing wall*e tonight - loved it, and will probably end up seeing it again with my girlfriend. what a great date movie - seriously.
just as wall*e ended, "wanted" started next door so i snuck in and caught that. not bad if you're in to over-the-top styling of sh*t being blown up. the moralizing and "learn to look inside yourself"-type messages are pretty tiresome tho. can't give it a strong recommendation but it was decent for the genre. angelina (or her body double) has a really nice ass.

Took my 11 year old to see Hancock last night. First of all I should have paid closer attention to the PG-13 rating, the movie was loaded with profanity. Sure I know they will hear it somewhere, but I can't help but cringe when Will Smith drops an F-Bomb on screen when the boy is sitting next to me. Now about the movie, this "film" took in over $66 million over the weekend, count me in as one of the people who feels ripped off. Basically the movie was garbage. It starts out with promise, but a flimsy plot and lousy script have this movie falling apart half way through it. Definitely a rental.

Cannot wait to see Wall-E, Dark Knight, and X-Files
-
as a long-time x-files fan, i should be more excited than i currently am about the upcoming movie - but i'm not. i'll definitely go see it but the preview i saw this weekend before "wanted" didn't do a great job of selling it. very poor editing of a promo, they tried to play up the suspense (and failed), while giving zero information about the storyline. fail.
dark knight, on the other hand, i'm very excited about - thanks to thedirector (http://www.iklipz.com/MovieDetail.aspx?MovieID=650c07ac-6d27-4b3d-986d-732c5a770a45). wait 'til you have 5 free minutes and click that link. you'll be thanking him too.
edit: looks like the clip has been taken down :( take my word for it, it's a kick-ass beginning.

i'm co-signing on The Dark Knight. at first, i feared that it would be corny b/c of the weak ad campaign at first (even through the initial wave of hype caused by heath's death). the recent press and previews i've seen have made me feel a little better about checking it out. same with the X-Files film. early summaries were saying that the movie would be heavily standalone from the X-Files universe. i really hope that they drop a lot of tie-ins to the show and the last movie...
also --- i caught "War, Inc." last night and i have to say that movie is crazy. pretty random and funny. John Cusack did a good job in the movie and in the action sequences. you should definitely check that one out.

For anyone else who can't find anything interesting enough to warrant shelling out movie theater cash:
I stumbled upon
C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389828/) on IFC in the wee hours of friday morning during a fit of insomnia. Hilarious, thought-provoking and disturbing all at once. One of the better mocumentaries I've caught in a while.

"maxed out"
older but excellent doc.

â??Both a stirring testament to the plight of cultural expression in Baghdad and a striking report on the refugee scene in Syria, this rock-doc like no other electrifies its genre and redefines headbanging as an act of hard-core courage.â?

â??More than just another Iraq-doc, "Heavy Metal" is a surprisingly up-close look at the toll of the war on young people, and how they still have dreams and still want to jam, party and get down. If "Once" was about the romance of creativity, "Heavy Metal in Baghdad" is about the total, unrelenting obsession. They have no choice. They must rock.â?

9.2/10 - See this film when you get the chance, visit the film's website, and for the sake of Acrassicauda, the next time you hear some heavy metal crank the volume to 11, throw up the horns and bang your head.
New York Sun
"A great parable about rock 'n' roll as an act of brotherhood and faith in collective survival."

I dont know why you people are seeing Wall-E and the freaking Incredible Hulk when the Hunter S Thompson documentary is out.
ummm, i suppose you've all seen that already?
and even if you had seen it already, you could have seen the Love Guru...that HAS to be better than Wall-E!!! right?
-
I agree with your points.
I think some people on this board are so desperate for constant entertainment that they'll grasp for just about anything....

actually, its just people not wanting to be completely alienated from pop-culture.
or a completely disgusting overabundance of cash and free time!

nah, wrong, IMO. wall-e is legit, it's a genuinely entertaining movie. i'm glad i saw it. and while the Love Guru prominently features the maples leafs, i doubt it's that good... a few cheap laughs at best.

imagine that, wanting to see a few movies once every 6 months... the arrogance
someday my entertainment will be assured by a little wonder that pukes all over my shoulder and sucks up all my cash into a college fund. until then, i'll be hitting the megaplex occasionally.

While critics are raving about "Tell No One" - a French film based on U.S. writer Harlan Coben's novel - I would take Wall-E over that any day.
My friend and I agreed that the pacing was just too slow and the flashbacks just got to be too much. Perhaps I enjoyed it less because I had read the book and knew where it was going. Regardless, I never trust the critics, but was curious enough as to how the French would make an American story.
Wall-E was a great story. It worked for adults and it worked for kids. They manage to bring such life to inanimate objects. Pixar does a great job with their films.
OTOH, dont bother with Hancock. Although Charlize Theron is always a looker, its truely not worth the money.

pineapple express was very funny

recommendation: do not go see the new X-Files movie. one of the worse things i've seen in a while. i grew up a HUGE x-files fan, i never watched much TV and it was one of only 2 shows i'd plan on watching.
i wanted to believe, but this new movie was worse than a stinker. i think the 32% it's currently running on Rotten Tomatoes is way too generous.

Dark Knight on Imax was pretty impressive.

Also, somewhat in line with our zombie talk, The Night of the Giving Head should be coming soon.

This was filmed by good friends of mine in my hometown. It got 4 stars in High Times when it came out. It's a hoot!
