so how are the terps looking this year?
-
Pre-Season #1 for the Terps!!
-
once again, Mason is dissed...
-
Sorry, but the Pitt Panthers are winning the Big East this year....
-
prediction: Missouri will be the worst 10-0 team in the country
-
Hoya - why can't you guys just revel in the fact that the Georgetown program is headed in the right direction and it should be quite a good year? This should be enough, I'd think.
Local Fans should just try to root for their team and stop all of the hating/inferiority complexes when it comes to the local squads (e.g. GW fans slamming GTown fans, GTown fans slamming Terps fans, and on and on).
I'm sick of it. For the record, I grew up a Terps fan, then went to BC. I've got no particular love for GTown, but I'm glad to see them back and doing well. Plus, as a DeMatha grad, I'm going to have to start paying more attention to the Hoyas, since Freeman and Braswell are on the way. Freeman, by the way, is incredible.
-
at least baylor can play non-conference games this year (watch them tonight against gonzaga!). and apparently we are picked to finish 7th in the big 12 (ahead of mizzou).

my thoughts on the local rivalries: georgetown owned DC in the 80s and early 90s, then maryland from the mid-90s or so until last year ... it's just nice see a sea-change like this going on, especially because we were down for a long time, and there's bound to be some revelling
the lock-down we have on the local recruiting game (previously dominated by the terps) is pretty crazy, i think we have the top 2 DC-area recruits for 07 (freeman and wright) and the top 2 for 08 (braswell and clark) ... and it's a big deal to finally break into the dematha arsenal, your old coach and our old coach didn't exactly like each other, and i don't think we ever got a recruit from you guys (at least in the last 25 yrs or so) until Freeman next year, so that's good to see ... i'm convinced that we'll struggle a bit this year and really take off once Freeman comes in next year, everything i've heard about him says that he's the real deal
just out of curiosity, do BC fans realize how much hatred exists for their program throughout the Big East after their defection? i don't take it as personally as some people did, but there's a lot more animosity between Big East teams and BC than there is for our local "rivalries"
i hope Thompson and The Sweaty One can put aside their differences and get together for a home-and-home series very soon, UMCP and GU need to play each other

Actually - SI has started doing that a lot recently - they did the same thing with the NBA preview. Depending on where you live, you either got D.Wade, Bron Bron or 'Melo.
And Hoya - I'm with you that the local schools should just put aside the b.s. and play each other (a rotating tourney like the Boston Hockey Beanpot would do the trick - with GW, GM, GTown and MD. And I don't want to get into where to place the blame for that - because every single school has a different version of that story as well.
As far as the whole BC into the ACC thing - I was never much in favor of it, and it was clearly a money grab by BC, though the administration will always deny that. However, just remember that Syracuse was just as ready to jump, but the state government in VA put pressure on UVA to make sure that VT was the other school besides BC and Miami to make the leap. While most BC fans realized the Big East would hate them immediately, it was became clear to the ignorant-of-hoops-hockey-loving student body when BC held the same record as U-Conn (I believe) and had beaten them, and the conference presented the regular season trophy to them in our last season in the league.
I'm glad to see that it has worked out all right for the Big East in terms of the football situation. And, for the ACC, same as the Big East - I don't like the extra large conference format for basketball. I'd much prefer the home-and-home setup for regular season games. But, due to the $$$$ out there for the BCS football bids, those days are long gone by ...
-
P.S. I forgot to mention that it makes 0 sense for BC to be in the ACC - since there is no school between UMCP and Boston. Its dumb, and I hate it mainly because I grew up such a big Terps basketball fan and now I have to deal with that divided loyalty thing far too often.

Ouch...that's gotta sting just a little....

definitely stings ... no doubt about it, a bad loss, but it's only november and we're still working out the kinks
the terps are actually looking pretty damn good this year, but the fact remains that georgetown has and will p3ned them in local recruiting for the foreseeable future (with incredibly inferior facilities), and that's one of the best barometers for the overall health of a program

So how are the Terps looking this year?
Don't know...I follow the 5-0, #4 ranked...

Pitt still won by 11 after a sluggish first half... it was their third game in three days.
I just think the Hoyas fans should be concerned by their suspect backcourt...just a public service announcement, that's all...

Oh Pitt, 16-0 every year and can't get past that pesky sweet sixteen.

Oh Pitt, 16-0 every year and can't get past that pesky sweet sixteen.
Point taken...but this is the first year since 2001 where I really think this team has the depth and attitude to reach the Final Four. And even though Pitt won't be 16-0 this year, it'll be a good thing because they've put together a challenging nonconference schedule that will have the team ready come tournament time.
That matchup with Wisconsin on Dec. 16 is gonna be a battle.
-
"Pitt still won by 11 after a sluggish first half... it was their third game in three days"
Didn't Oakland play 3 games in 3 days as well?
-
Didn't Oakland play 3 games in 3 days as well?
Yeah, but Oakland didn't win all three games....
-
3 really good games last night
duke / marquette was the best of the season until about 4 minutes to play and the dookies just folded
-
3 really good games last night
Yeah, I caught second half of UCLA v. Kentucky...back and forth until the closing seconds.

Terps are 6-0, ranked 25th.. They won the Coaches for Cancer tourn. beating Michigan State and St Johns.. I think they will at least make the NCAA this year. The Sultan of Sweat returns.

i love when Duke Loses.
-
I realize Pitt won all 3, but the statement was made like an excuse for Pitt's narrow margin of victory over Oakland... "it was their third game in three days." I was merely stating that it 3 in 3 days for all teams involved. In fact, one could argue that it was tougher for Oakland than Pitt. Afterall, Pitt won by 26 the first night, 17 the next. They hardly should have been tired, having not had to play a 40 minute competitive game. Oakland did play 2 fairly competitive games the first 2 nights, having to play their starters the entire time.
Of course, don't take this like I am an Oakland fan, just not a huge BCS fan, so I don't like to give credit to a BCS school at the expense of a non-BCS school. It was 3 games in 3 days for all, but they are 18-22 year olds, they should be able to do that.
-
Do you know what "BCS" means? Bowl Championship Series...it doesn't in anyway apply to college basketball, because basketball does it right and implements a playoff system at the end of the regular season.
-
Speaking of BCS....when was the last time (prior to this week) that a school was concurrently ranked number 1 in both the football and basketball polls?
-

notre dame in 74 for #1 in AP football / AP basketball ... but ohio state hoops isn't ranked #1 in the AP, because the voters there have some iota of brains sloshing around up there
-
wasnt Texas number 1 in both polls just last year or the year before?
-
Originally posted by le sonick:

No. They both got to #2 at the same time, but never #1 at the same time.
UCLA was once ranked #1 in football and had won the national title in basketball the previous March, but by the time the first AP basketball poll came out in the fall, they were no longer #1 in football.
That means that The University of Notre Dame (1974) is the only university to do it in both AP polls concurrently (Ohio St. is currently #3 in AP hoops).

While technically you are right, basketball followers still uses the BCS term to indicate those in one of the six major conferences. I wasn't starting a pissing match, just in case you want to answer that basketball uses the term majors/mid-majors. Pick at the technical aspects of my post, rather than the meat of it. Either way, your Panthers won a squeaker, at home, over the mighty whatevers of Oakland. But hey, that WAS their 3rd game in 3 days. Whew, hope they recover.

Maybe Clark Kellogg needs to look at your post regarding how BCS does not refer to basketball.

If you didn't enjoy the first few weeks of the season, you can't call yourself a college hoops fan. We had a taste of March Madness in November, sans the season being over for the losers.
Brian Ligon shows off Butler's NIT championship trophy. (Getty Images)
All over the landscape there were power conference (BCS) schools losing to non-power conference schools:
â?¢ Butler won the NIT Season Tip-Off, beating Notre Dame, Indiana, Tennessee and Gonzaga;
â?¢ Oral Roberts beat Kansas, ranked No. 3 at the time;
â?¢ Air Force foiled Stanford, Colorado and Texas Tech;
â?¢ Jackson State won a thriller at Rutgers;
â?¢ Old Dominion dispatched Georgetown;
â?¢ Xavier defeated Villanova;
â?¢ Missouri State stunned Wisconsin;
â?¢ Vermont bounced Boston College;
â?¢ Buffalo beat Miami;
â?¢ Western Michigan edged Virginia Tech.
Granted, most of these wins were on neutral courts, but Air Force, Old Dominion, Oral Roberts and Vermont all earned true road wins.
I love the plethora of pre-conference events and tournaments. I won't pretend to understand the challenges, dynamics and financial considerations of scheduling, but I think it's healthy for college hoops to have BCS schools vs. non-BCS schools on neutral courts. In many cases, it's the only way for these matchups to occur outside of postseason play. And that's a shame.
I would also like to see more BCS schools do home-and-homes with a few non-BCS schools. It presents a real possibility for losses, both financially and on the court, but I think it would be good for the game.
-
Yes, I'm happy to update this thread! Maryland just beat Illinois to end their non-conference home win streak which started in 1998. 19th ranked Maryland's 8-0 start is its best since the 1988-89 team won its first 10.

curious, if gonzaga had won, would kellogg have included it in that list?
i do have some issues with the teams listed- air force, oral roberts, butler, xavier and vermont have all made multiple trips to the tournament in the past few years. basketball is just a completely different animal than football- a great football team from a non-power conference can beat a bad team from a bcs conference, but, no way can it beat a good/great team. as shown in last year's ncaa basketball tournament, a good team from a non-power conference can beat a good team from a major conference.
several non-power conferences are just as good as the power conferences in basketball- i'm thinking of missouri valley and west coast, for instance.

however, they werent number one in both polls while both seasons were still ongoing. apparently in 1974 Notre Dame was number one in one sport that either hadnt begun or already ended. or something, this is according to ESPN last night.
so they said "no team has ever been number 1 in both AP polls while both seasons were active"
i was close with Texas, and that was off the top of my head!

You're right, it was 2 weeks off, maybe three. But they were the same graduation year, unlike UCLA in 1967, and people usually cite that as the difference.
Notre Dame won the National Title in Football Jan. 1974. Two/three weeks later Notre Dame beat UCLA to become #1 in basketball (only to lose to UCLA 1 week later in a rematch).
UCLA were National Champions in Basketball in March 1967. That fall, they were #1 in Football, but the new basketball season hadn't started yet. By the time the basketball season started, UCLA lost to USC in Football, and were no longer #1.

This will be my last post on this topic since the Panthers have recovered well (wink, wink), winning two more games that included soundily defeating BCS-member Florida St. My area of objection was that I define "squeaker" as something like a one-point win in double overtime. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. Of course, Oakland should have been defeated by a larger margin, but even the best teams have slow starts...the bottom line is that a victory was had by a comfortable margin.
Moving on, was the Gtown/Oregon even on television? I wasn't even aware of the game until this morning because of all the hoopla over the ACC/Big Ten Shoot-Out. The only Big East games I've seen on TV lately were some UConn games on MASN.
