Who went......comments?
Nice touch when he indirectly dedicate "The Man Who Sold the World" to George Dubya.
I'll reserve my comments till I see what other's thought.

I thought it was fantastic. Easily the show of the year for me (so far anyway). The band was tight. The crowd attentive. Good mix of old/new/hits/covers. I liked the story about stealing his Ziggy stance from Gene Vincent.

Bowie has never given a bad performance in all the times I've seen him....last night he seemed much more relaxed than previous shows, chatting to the audience, cracking jokes and poking fun at himself. I laughed at the Gene Vincent story and the explanation about the fan at the front of the stage was just there to keep him cool and not to make him look all heroic with his hair blowing in the wind and all that.
Songs of note..."All the young dudes", the audience really got into it. "Quicksand" for me because it's one of my all time favourites of his."Panic in Detroit" how can it not be? "Under Pressure" was also pretty damn amazing... Then to finish with Heroes and follow up with the encore of Suffragette City and Ziggy Stardust left me gobsmacked.
Most memorable comment by my wife, "I never thought I'd want to fuck a 56 year old man...but there you go?"
The crowd was a great mix of ages and demographics too.
Didn't bother to go inside for the Stererophonics having seen them at the 930 and had been very underwhelmed with them, so decided to stay in the "beer garden" having just spent what seemed like 3 hours going through security to get there. What's with the check the id..stamp your hand that says "OVER 21", get a red arm band then get carded yet again everytime you go to buy a beer? They could show the TSA how to do it.

Good, good reviews. Your enthusiasm & feedback has me pretty eager for the evening.
I'm seeing him tonight @ the Benedum in Pittsburgh. A very cool old theater:
Benedum Center (http://www.pgharts.org/venues/benedum.cfm)
Should be a great intimate venue.

>>> I attended a few shows at the old "Stanley" Theatre during the late 70's and early 80's......damn....if I'd have known that the Benedum was the old Stanley I would have bought ticks in a heartbeat......some of the best acoustics anywhere in the U.S.......fucking GREAT space...enjoy!

It is pretty funny when I think back. Right before it re-opened as the Benedum, it was home to many a 70's/80's rock concert. I saw quite a few of the the big 80's metal bands there. The place would just get trashed:
<img src="http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf300/f351/f35107gjtm0.jpg" alt=" - " />
Now it's home mostly to high-brow theater & such with the occasional concert booking only when deemed worthy.

Did he make the joke about how he grew up in the area??? I saw him twice in 2002...during which time i found out that he not only grew up in Manassas, VA and went to "Manassas University"...but he also grew up in Paris and went to The University of Paris.
I wanted to go see the show last nite...he is an awesome performer..but as always, i gots no money.
-
Awesome show (as always). But it has absolutely renewed my determination to completely forswear all arena shows.
Yes, I am spoiled by "smaller" venues like 9:30 and Black Cat. But I saw Bowie at Nation and at Roseland and would happily pay twice the ticket price to NEVER have to see him at Patriot Center again.
In addition to the ignorant beer garden and parking -- it was a show full of people who really don't get going to shows. I don't mean that to be as snobby as it might appear. Besides, while he can manage to energize a place like Patriot Center he just seems, I dunno, more powerful in a smaller venue.
Damn you, David Bowie, last night was the perfect advertisement for me to FINALLY join BowieNet so I can get notices for any of the smaller NYC shows. Yes, I will go to New York to see him before I will go back to Patriot Center.
Bullocks, tell your wife to keep her hands offa him. He's mine, mine, mine, all mine.
Oh, and I sat behind a guy with the worst BO in the history of smells. He actually made my eyes water. The hubby and I were putting napkins to our faces to try and deaden the stench. Mouth-breathing -- nope, then your tongue just tasted like this guy stunk. Even did the Medical Examiner thing of chewing really really strong mentholated gum -- nothing would stop the uberfunk. We ended up finding seats away from this monster and cracked up whenever we would see some unsuspecting fool sit down, wrinkle their nose, dry heave and split.

Bowie put on a great show. Wasn't a big fan of him before the show but now I am.
The Stereophonics played a lot of their new album. It was ok, much harder roking than their previous stuff.
The patriot center is not an ideal venue but Bowie had everyone rocking and into the show.

Nobody listens to mank because he's just an ornery old git stuck in a time warp....BUT....am I or am I not right when I say anyone who considers themselves a music fan must see Bowie live if the opportunity arises? (Which I've said many times on this board.)

Thx for the link O'Rotten. I was waiting for the PPG article (always a day late) and a chance to see the final setlist before chiming in.
That's a fantastic accurate review of the show (by a mostly snobbish reviewer that's not prone to over-exaggeration or high praise).
I went to the show mostly because it was a chance to see a legend - I walked out awestruck & smiling. I can't remember seeing a show on any level where the performer seemed to be happier or having a better time. Check out the photo that accompanied the Post Gazette article:
:D )
About 3/4's of the way in, he actually seemed to be improvising. Not sure what all that curfew stuff is about (indoors?!), but he seemed to know that they were going to try & shorten his encore so he squeezed it all into the main set. Here's the setlist:
Pittsburgh May 17th 2004
01 Rebel Rebel
02 New Killer Star
03 Cactus
04 Sister Midnight
05 Hang On To Yourself
06 All The Young Dudes
07 Fame
08 China Girl
09 The Loneliest Guy
10 The Man Who Sold The World
11 Hallo Spaceboy
12 Sunday
13 Heathen (The Rays)
14 Under Pressure
15 Station To Station
16 Ashes To Ashes
17 Quicksand
18 Life On Mars?
19 Changes
20 The Supermen
21 Modern Love
22 Pablo Picasso
23 White Light, White Heat
24 I'm Afraid Of Americans
25 Heroes
(Encore)
26 Ziggy Stardust
I wonder if most of the attendees knew how much ROCK they were gonna get on this night. At times there were 4 guitars & the songs morphed into something hard & heavy. It's been awhile since I've seen a guitar solo & a dueling one at that.

Thinking more about the show - I really believe the venue may have contributed to the overall excellence. As a performer, how could you not love playing in such an amazing beautiful space?
And from a fan's perspective - it's really an unparalled venue in which to see a medium to large act. I had forgotten how great it was: You mentioned the acoustics - still superb. And the floor has a terrifically designed slope which enables you to see perfectly from any spot. It's as if no one is in front of.
I'm 6 feet plus tall and still often find myself peeking around heads at shows. It must really suck to go to crowded shows & not be tall. Why don't all venues, clubs, etc. utilize this simple yet dramatic concept? I can't believe it would have been that difficult to create a sloped floor during the WUST to Nightclub 9:30 conversion.
Vote for me & I'll mandate that all spaces implement my revolutionary idea! :D
-
Vote for me and I'll mandate that all music fans must attend a Bowie concert so they can witness for themselves how it's supposed to be done.
-
I imagine it's simply a safety issue. A beer-soaked, sloped floor in an over-crowded bar could cause lots of problems.
Nice thoughts on the show though.

Drink enough and the floor becomes sloped anyway.

He was totally winging it by then:
* Had to restart a few times,
* He was giving the band clues to guess the next song - "How's this for a clue? ch, ch, ch?",
* He introduced Life on Mars with "we haven't played this one forever - take it for what its worth".
AWESOME segment.
I think something weirdly wonderful sometimes happens to bands when they come to Pittsburgh. It's no DC or NY - very little pressure. Musicians seem to pick up on that and often deliver stunningly relaxed performances.
