Well this week/year just keeps the bad news a rollin'.. So along the lines of what hutch raised by suggesting Curtis Mayfield, etc, what records make you temporary escape the madness that is going around you..
One of my current favs is the new one from Richard Barone(The Bongos) called "Sorrows and Promises - Greenwich Village in the 1960s"
In the past the first Lianne La havas "Is Your Love Big Enough" got me through a sad patch..
Dan Wilson's Love Without Fear I find is a good album to get lost in as well

well as I said before Sam Cooke makes me very happy...his voice to me is like love...
Curtis Mayfield also makes me happy but he's a little more like soothing....
I have to say Billie Holiday's early stuff on Columbia (there is a 10 cd set of it) makes me feel very happy.. there is an ebullience and joy in that music that is transcendent for me..
Jorge Ben's Tabua da Esmeralda is magical.. a world of shimmering magic...I don't even speak portuguese and only understand a bit but it sounds like singing about elves and magic lands...
Andres Calamaro- from Argentina- is probably the guy I most get into in a cathartic way.. you know like you inhabit his music and singing it just is a great release...it doesn't necessarily have to be happy themes (many of the better songs are reminiscent of those nasty Dylan songs about women) but for some reason just the catharsis itself is quite healing...

Edith Piaf makes me happy. Granted, I have no idea what she'a saying. But that voice....

The Feelies never fail to make me feel better. It's sorta odd...I don't necessarily have "happy place" music. Even when I'm feeling crummy (or even happy) I still listen to dark or angry stuff. But for me it's about what brings me comfort.
Right now, this is what I'm feeling:
Pop Will Eat Itself -- This is the Day, This is the Hour, This is This
Pylon -- Gyrate (always lifts my spirits)
The Cure -- Pornography (you know what? When I'm feeling shitty, Robert Smith at his bleakest makes me feel so much better...he committed his darkest thoughts in the most succinct way and my shittiest day cannot match this shattering masterpiece of plunging into the depths of the human psyche. When "Cold" starts, that's the moment when I think "this man has put clinical depression to sound"...sounds like it shouldn't be comforting but it totally is. Robert Smith understands your crappy day but he will top it...every damn time.)
The Beastie Boys -- Paul's Boutique (or Check Your Head...both make me feel better)

Easy Street - collapsible hearts club

The good old Grateful Dead- Uncle John's Band

Sparky's Dream, Teenage Fanclub...makes me happy...or tries to anyway
-
