i'm pretty sure she played at the capitol ballroom as it was then called twice back in the '90s, but i could be wrong.

Tom Waits?

you know, I knew as I was typing that you'd probably chip in with your usual two cents
I guess what I should have clarified is that I don't think they've hit DC since their opening album, so a good 5 years.....unless I was out of town and it was not on my radar screen
they definitely didn't come here for Leader of the Free World....mind you I think in general they avoid the states

Daft Punk

They also played the 9:30 a few months prior to that show with Doves. Twice in one year and now nothing since.

i guess we're only talking about the district itself? 'cause the raconteurs just played the Patriot Center last friday, in my books that takes them off this list.
RE: daft punk - maybe seth will read this thread and take them off the list, too :)
-
If we're going to qualify it with only in the district or only as a headliner then I'd add the Manic Street Preachers. I think the only time they've been in this area was opening for Oasis at Nissan in 1996.

yeah, wasn't there an Elbow/South double bill? thats the one I was aware of - I didn't realize they opened for Doves
-
Yes, that's the one. Guy was sick with some throat ailment and even got a member of the audience to go up on stage and sing lead vocals on "Newborn". She wasn't half-bad, either.

they had a headlining show scheduled at 9:30 as well soon after but cancelled

Frog Eyes
Maximo Park (Hey Seth...)
-
Didn't Frog Eyes play Iota in 2004?

I saw them at Iota (opened for and played with Destroyer), and they may have played another show as well
-
Tom Waits played at the Warner in the 80's. I missed him then, and have been waiting for him to return since. Seth, can you help?!?
-
Embrace (I think?)
I remember they were scheduled to come here a few years ago and the tour got cancelled.

i saw maximo park last year performing in some festival in france with the futureheads and kaiser chiefs, and from what i recall, they were really horrible. but then again i was on the verge of blacking out so dont take my word for it.

Dirty Pretty Things
The Kooks

Wow.. Maximo Park horrible? I find that hard to believe. I saw them in NYC in the wee hours of the morning, and they were incredible! Paul sounds incredible live, the band tears it up on stage and they are fun! A friend of mine has seen them a handful of times throughout the states, and she said every time is even better!
-
Didn't the Manic Street Preachers schedule a couple shows here and then pull out? I know they supported Oasis at the Nissan awhile back, so maybe that disqualifies them, but I don't think they've played in DC.
-
i booked frog eyes at the warehouse next door in may 2005, and there were about 18 people there.

i like their music and everything, but the sound was a little off and there was no flow to their show at all. paul kept stopping, once in the middle of a song, to tell the crowd to calm down. it was in a patriot center-type concert hall and people were trying to mosh at the front, but instead a bunch of teenage girls just ended up getting stomped. kaiser chiefs played next and ricky (?) didnt say anything. instead he even encouraged it stage diving. man that was a good set. it was prob better than when i saw them here 2 summers ago.

didn't catch that surrounding area caveat at the end. well aware of those shows. i was thinking proper headlining show. not getting roped into those type of shows.
raconteurs played the fucking norva for chrissakes. no 9:30? what the shit? i'm sure it didn't work out or whatever and wasn't for a lack of effort on mr. hurwitz's part. just a bit surprising.

let's make this one happen...

Pete Doherty - either with the Libertines or Babyshambles
-
The Juan Maclean
Baltimore doesn't count, right?

but, fuck, the libertines put on some great shows here ... the black cat one in '04 (?) with british sea power opening, in particular
-
Yes, that Libertines show at the Black Cat was great. I believe it was around August 2003. Would have been cool to see Doherty w/ the band though - have to think he kicked it up a notch.
Another (sort of) - the reunited Stooges. I guess they haven't been too many places, but it'd be nice to get them to DC.
Sidenote to that - I was flipping through some book, I think Please Kill Me, and there was a story about the Stooges playing Constitution Hall in the early 70's. Who are the ad wizards who booked that?

I'm waiting for them too. Since they got back together, I think they've done more overseas festivals than U.S. gigs....Virgin fest Seth? :)

fugazi.
-
ha. The Fugazi one made me laugh.
-
Fuck that. 9:30 Club Seth?
That's one of the few shows I'd think about paying $50 to see. Although my one day Bumbershoot pass got me in to see them for about $16 in 2005 (in a much more intimate venue than Virgin Fest).

Yeah, I was aware of that, but I don't think Columbia, MD counts. I would think to qualify for the DC area, the place would have to be metro accessible...
Plus, I'd like to see em in a club setting.
-
The Grip Weeds
The Sugarplastic (at least since 96)
Troy Gregory and the Step Sisters
Skye (Morcheeba appearences don't count)
The Mockers
The Negro Problem / Stew

They played Baltimore way back in the day. The whole band, with Jim. Not the what's left of them Doors.

Saw them in NY with Mike Watt on bass and it totally killed. They'll play DC I'd think when they tour for the new album they're doing with Steve Albini. Who knows where, but I'll be there no matter what. Iggy is still an amazing performer and the band sounded great.

has incubus ever played here?

I saw them in 1993, I believer, at DAR. It was somewhere downtown, can't really remember where.

I'd avoid that show. Better to just stay home, put on the records and imagine. Trust me.
