this is an opinion operation. one choice, so think long and hard.
pavement - i tried to listen to them for the first time today. oh my god. stretched out mellow into yellow clouds of shit. phil gramm must have meant them when he said whiny americans.
-
This was a thread a while back called "artists you just don't get" (or something like that).
If I recall, my answer then was Bob Dylan.
-
This is an easy one.
Like...very easy.
Led Zeppelin.

i declare this topic to heavy for a friday...

Good, I'm glad. Now I don't have to say Radiohead or Pearl Jam and get anybody uptight.

We've done this one way too many times. U2. Horribly overrated.
-
don't make me start a thread called "topics are boring, predictable, stale, pointless, etc, wash, etc, rinse, repeat". i can safely predict most active members responses to this thread. trust me U2 wont fair very well...

Well, I'm no longer 47 for a start, and the topic that I originally changed my name on was "boardies who's user name comes from a song" or whatever, so I had a little attempt at humour...

What board have you been reading? If I hear one more person ejaculate about Daft Punk and their pyramid ("ooooooh, that stage prop is totally blowing my mind"), I'm going to drop dead, resurrect, and drop dead again. And the rest are frequently highly praised, so eat a dick.
Or did you want a thread where everyone says "Call me a heretic, but I just don't like Radiohead, Pearl Jam or Smashing Pumpkins." Boy that'd be interesting.
-
Daft Punk makes the best dance music of anyone on the planet. fuck their stupid stage setup. doesnt mean a thing. if you want to dance, you cant find anything better. end of story.

From what I've heard Jandek would fall in this catagory, and he's not who i'm thinking off.

I happen to think The Smiths are God status but understand I'm in the minority. Just because there are small number of fans are in awe of them does not make them Gods in the mainstream...just say'n
-
This topic would probably be a lot more fun if it were, say, a People magazine forum and you listed someone like Josh Groban. Go on, tell 'em he's not an opera singer.
-
Originally posted by Shadrach:

Grateful Dead make the noise that real bands make when tuning up.
I think their concerts are just events for stoners of all ages to hang out at....I don't think it actually has anything much to do with the band. Not unlike the Parrot heads and Jimmy Buffet. It's the event, not the concert that they go for.
Nirvana are/were, well, just shyte, plain and simple. Cobain became the poster boy for the Seattle grunge movement and that's how they got their following. He will end up being a minime Che Guevara with teenage boys wearing t-shirts with his face on because it's cool to do so, even though they don't have a clue who he was.
-
Interesting. I would mos def put the Smiths into God territory, both because of my own personal opinion that they are giants among men and because I figured that was the conventional wisdom.
-
the smiths - how could i forget them? thanks for the reminder. they more than suck, they supersize suck, they suck more than an uncle's day at a whorehouse.

you know i was wondering if there would have been as much hatred for U2 had they broken up after the release of their third album "War". as it was during the tour in the support of the album that ego started to emerge. Bono went from being just another singer in a rock and roll band with a some what unique sound to them, to become a lead singer ready to solve all the problems of the world. up until then they had two solid record with a number of great singles, with a medium sized but not completely rabid fanbase. all that change despecially with the arrival of "Joshua Tree". Which IMHO was just another collection of good songs and was in no way life changing. The rest is history including those wack sunglasses...

I'd say you'd be correct in your assumption. When I saw them during that tour @ UM's Ritchie Coliseum he was just just a damn fine front man to a fantastic band with a great bunch of songs. Once they garnered attention from the subsequent singles and then Joshua Tree I'd say is where he jumped the shark. It's a shame really. I found him quite entertaining all the way up in the top of the bleachers waving his Irish flag, all by himself and lovin it. The man had serious passion " for his music" at that point. Meetings with world leaders not even a consideration.

Personally, It would'nt have been the same had I not had those 2 crazed geniuses to turn to in my youth. They gave me years of musical pleasure growing up and still do, as well as some street smarts.

and this will probably assure me a permanent spot on thedirector's shit-list, but: the rolling stones. an interesting take on blues-rock... in the 1960's. FOURTY years later, not so much. (incoming hate via text msg in four, three, two...)

most of their recorded work doesn't suck, but furthermore they get a pass b/c of what i've seen them do on stage recently. here, to appease thedirector: i've never seen the rolling stoned perform, maybe i'll change my mind once i see mick sashay across the stage in that ultra-hetero manner of his.

glad to see i'm not the only one with ADD here. topic is bands that suck, not bands who have fans that suck. by your own admission, the band is OK (aka doesn't suck).

again, not the band or even the stage prop itself - it's the fans going on and on about it. i'd add "if you'd experienced it, you'd be one of those babbling fools too", but i think i've generated enough hatred for one night.

her real indictment is that there aren't enough drugs out there to make me enjoy her music :p
ok, so i was exaggerating when i said she has no talent, obviously she has vocal skills. doesn't prevent her music from being either boring or grating. "her band uses futuristic instruments like the reactable and jazzmutant lemurs! look that those costumes and the styling! she makes up her own scales! she's declared independence from the music industry and marches to her own drum! her last album was made solely with samples of squeeking chairs, hyena calls and sounds from a blender!" too bad none of that translates into music that i was to listen to.
IT'S AN OPINION.

Who did you see as openers on that one?

Aww my first concert. They opened for Nelson. I rocked the Nelson hair in middle school and glued their posters to my bedroom wall because I didn't think I'd ever want to take them down.

My addition to the list-Dave Matthews Band.

I thought maybe you went for the opener. I believe they brought the Clash along earlier that decade when they were on their last legs. I was just curious as to who they brought for their 25th anniversary tour, which is the one you saw.
-
Certainly wasn't the Clash....I think I would've remembered that. I saw the Clash in 78 at their peak. One of those shows that people of my generation call you a twat when you tell them you saw them, Like the generation before me and the Beatles.

I was fortunate to see them stateside the following year in '79. They disbanded around '86 I believe. I was just curious what band they got in '89. I always got a kick out of them pairing with The Clash when they did. Seemed just plain wrong.

I used to be of the same opnion until I was 'dragged' to a concert by a woman I was dating at the time, and was totally blown away with his concert, he had those African singers on tour with him at the time, Ladysmith ramalamadingdong or whatever they called themselves. I've been a 'casual fan' ever since.
He has wrote some wonderful songs though. "Still Crazy after all these years' "50 ways to leave your lover" and "Graceland" to name just three.

And don't forget "You Can Call Me Al" - video with Chevy Chase is one of the best ever, even better than "Kokomo".

This is the easiest response I have ever had on any message board since I ran a BBS on a 300 baud acoustic coupler dial up modem!
I have three bands that fit.
1) METALLICA
2) METALLICA
3) METALLICA
How in god's name anyone can think those guys are talented is beyond me.
-
Well, Springsteen had one good album (and what an album) but apart from that he's extremely average. I would put Mellencap higher on the "American icon" pedestal personally, much more talented than old Brucie.

But do you like the song or the video? I think the song is fun and cute, and sing along everytime I hear it, but a classic??? I'm not so sure.

You know what I hate more than this thread.....posting photo's of cats with lame comments on them! Just what is it with that?
-
radiohead comes to mind.. everything thats wrong with rock and roll.. a band that manages to suck all the fun out of rock and roll... why don't they listen to some chuck berry/ac dc/rolling stones and try again? last time i checked rock and roll was supposed to be fun and about sex, drugs and rock and roll partying....
-
Yes. They've been repeatedly making the same album since 1980.
Then again, rednecks are the only people who see them as gods and their opinion really doesn't matter.

this is why these threads are pointless and just where are the "unpopular" bands that bickering indie elitists think are gods?
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Modest Mouse
SUPERCHUNK
The Decemberists
New Pronographers
etc.
What i notice is interesting, is that most of the bands listed in this thread were once staples on radio and there is a definite lack of newer artists. i suspect that if radio were still one of the primary ways in which to listen to music, that several of the highly touted "indie" bands would pop up on peoples lists.

No ya wallie....the fact you were offended by a not so flattering photo of a kitten.
BUT if your friend who has a kitten for a pet is male, then he needs to be gay!
Cats are totally gay pets. One step lower on the gay-o-meter than a toy poodle.

i think ac dc still rules.. they make chuck berry rock and roll and sing about sex, booze and floozies...parties and good times..
the reason rock is going down the crapper is cause modern rock and roll (indie to coldplay through radiohead and nickelback..all of it) has gotten away from fun... i call it rock without the roll.. its boring..its not a party like ac dc is..
and whoever posted they have been making the same album since 1980??? so what? its good music... who made who is a kickass song...stiff upper lip is a great album (listen to it before you slag it)..
i think only through reconnecting with its roots- chuck berry- will rock and roll continue to be fun... when you think of the great bands: beatles, stones and faces, ac dc, flaming groovies..they all come from chuck berry.. he pretty much invented the thing.. lennon as is well known stated "if there was another word for rock and roll it would be chuck berry"
well modern bands like pavement/malkmus, grunge and all that jive..thats all about as far as you can be from chuck berry...
some call that progress but i say its devolution baby.

Again, I don't care what people think of me as long as they think I'm thin.

ok. the song was "touch me i'm going to scream, part 2." i just relistened to it. now it sounds like if the chemical brothers are a gorillaz cover band doing floyd.
i'm now listening to "one big holiday." now they sound like neil young. odd.

Pink Floyd does indeed come to mind on a handful of MMJ songs. But not that many.
