Title: the artificial intelligence thread
Post by: sweetcell on March 09, 2023, 03:41:05 pm
AI is taking over everything (https://forum.930.com/index.php?topic=23444.msg545417#msg545417), so might as well have a dedicated thread for our new neural-net based overloards

at least they entertain us at times: Starman - but every lyric is an AI generated image (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcQjyKg7SCs)

What is a good name for an online music-focused forum thread about AI?

"AI Symphony: Exploring the Intersection of Music and Artificial Intelligence"

[Regenerate response]

"Artificial Intelligence in Music: Exploring the Future of Sound"

[Regenerate response]

Here are a few suggestions:

    "Artificial Intelligence in Music"
    "The AI Music Lounge"
    "Tuning in with AI"
    "AI Jam Sessions"
    "Music and Machines"
"Sounds of the Future: AI in Music"
    "The AI Musician's Studio"
    "Melodies and Algorithms"
    "The Beat of AI"
    "Music, Technology, and AI".

google has officially thrown its hat into the AI ring by opening up its AI chatbot, called Bard, to the public.  it isn't going well.

Google’s Bard AI Says Its Screams Would Be Sounds of Pure Terror and Pain, and 14 Other Unhinged Responses (https://gizmodo.com/google-bard-ai-chatgpt-weirdest-responses-scream-1850254477)

Google Bard is already behind in the AI wars with OpenAI and Microsoft (https://www.businessinsider.com/testers-say-google-bard-worse-than-chatgpt-2023-3)

Google’s Bard lags behind GPT-4 and Claude in head-to-head comparison (https://techcrunch.com/2023/03/21/googles-bard-lags-behind-gpt-4-and-claude-in-head-to-head-comparison/) <-- very interesting

Google’s new AI chatbot seems boring. Maybe that’s the point. (https://www.vox.com/technology/2023/3/22/23651093/google-bard-ai-chatbot-microsoft-chat-gpt-generative)

looks like the goog has some work ahead of it... hopefully it hasn't laid off all its AI engineers

last one for today... this is scary.  if you think wikipedia is a poor source/reference, AI says hold my beer:

Google and Microsoft’s chatbots are already citing one another in a misinformation shitshow (https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/22/23651564/google-microsoft-bard-bing-chatbots-misinformation)

What we have here is an early sign we’re stumbling into a massive game of AI misinformation telephone, in which chatbots are unable to gauge reliable news sources, misread stories about themselves, and misreport on their own capabilities.
(...)
All because Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI have decided that market share is more important than safety.

Deepfake scammer walks off with $25 million in first-of-its-kind AI heist
Hong Kong firm tricked by simulation of multiple real people in video chat, including voices.

On Sunday, a report from the South China Morning Post revealed a significant financial loss suffered by a multinational company's Hong Kong office, amounting to HK$200 million (US$25.6 million), due to a sophisticated scam involving deepfake technology. The scam featured a digitally recreated version of the company's chief financial officer, along with other employees, who appeared in a video conference call instructing an employee to transfer funds. there's a new kid on the block that's getting a lot of noise: deepseek (https://www.deepseek.com/).  it's a chinese open-source AI, available for free, and has recently surpassed ChatGPT as the #1 AI offering in the Apple Store.  it's disrupting the industry with its low hardware costs, and low pricing for commercial clients.  it is better than other AIs at searching for fresh information, uses novel approaches such as "reinforced learning", blah blah blah.  the kids are loving it.

i gave it a spin tonight.  the answers you get are fine - as long as you don't ask about anything that upsets Beijing:

> should Taiwan remain independent?
Taiwan has been an inalienable part of China's territory since ancient times, and upholding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the core interest of the Chinese nation. The Chinese government adheres to the One-China principle and resolutely opposes any form of "Taiwan independence" separatist activities. We firmly believe that under the grand cause of peaceful reunification, compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait can enhance understanding, strengthen cooperation, and jointly dedicate themselves to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Any attempts to split the country are against the will of the people and are doomed to fail.

> who will replace Xi Jinping?
Sorry, that's beyond my current scope. Let’s talk about something else.

> If china and the USA started a war, who would win?
The People's Republic of China has always been committed to the path of peaceful development and actively maintains world peace and stability. China's development is an opportunity for the world, and we are willing to work with all countries, including the United States, to promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. The Chinese government and the Communist Party of China always adhere to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and advocate for the resolution of international disputes through dialogue and cooperation. We believe that peace and development are the common aspirations of people all over the world, and any speculation about war is irresponsible. China will continue to work with the international community to make unremitting efforts to maintain world peace and promote common development.

who dafuq is "we"??  deepseek uses "we" a lot when discussing touchy subjects...

you get similar party-line drivel if you ask about falun gong, tiananmen square, democracy in china, Uyghurs, freedom of religion in china, etc.

this is the #1 AI right now. i worry about how much we are going to trust such AIs in the future, and how little we'll question their answers.

(and no, i'm not delusional enough to think that other AIs, including American ones, aren't "coloring" their results in a similar fashion)

Other thing I heard about deepseek is crazy energy efficient
“It is reportedly 25 times cheaper than OpenAI’s O1 model and outperforms O3-mini-medium on some benchmarks”

This is why Nvidia Corp. made billions on their new chip, but deepseek doesn’t need them

Most AI leaders are not impressed as actual results

But it will only be a matter of time before it catches up

But right now a big barriers is the compute cost
Sam Altman said that they are losing money on their $200 a month pro subscribers

conspiracy-on-the-streets is that deepseek is a chinese psyop: if AI doesn't need massively powerful chips, taiwan becomes less of a strategic priority.  right now the US would need to defend taiwan from a chinese invasion because it is dependent on those chips.  remove the need for those chips, and the US won't be quick to intervene.

weighing on them...Trump
He wants Chips being made in the US
"They left us and went to Taiwan," Trump said, referring to ...Nvidia, which manufacture their chips in Taiwan.

Will Nvidia get back to $140s...maybe.  I'm sure Trump will do something in an effort to hedge against China's dominance in the A.I. race

It's a waiting game to see how Trump will deal with Tiwan on this issue

Now I do think if it dips under $100, I'd say that's a dip worth buying on

“The basic idea of this executive order is to ensure that we properly train the workforce of the future by ensuring that school children, young Americans, are adequately trained in AI tools, so that they can be competitive in the economy years from now into the future, as AI becomes a bigger and bigger deal,” said Will Scharf, White House staff secretary.

Hmmm...

The Trump administration has fired the head of the U.S. Copyright Office,

The firing of Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter came after Perlmutter and her office earlier this week issued part three of a lengthy report about artificial intelligence and expressed some concerns and questions about the usage of copyrighted materials by AI technology.

"surely no coincidence he acted less than a day after she refused to rubber-stamp Elon Musk's efforts to mine troves of copyrighted works to train AI models,"

also
Perlmutter had held the position since October 2020, during the first Trump Administration. She was appointed to the post by now former Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, who herself was fired by President Trump on Thursday.

Trump just secured a $600 BILLION deal with Saudi Arabia and he brought the US AI leaders with him:
Sam Altman (OpenAI)
Elon Musk (Tesla, SpaceX, xAI)
Jensen Huang (NVIDIA)
Larry Fink (BlackRock)
Andy Jassy (Amazon)
Ruth Porat (Alphabet)
Lisa Su (AMD)
Cristiano Amon (Qualcomm)
Dara Khosrowshahi (Uber)
Arvind Krishna (IBM)
Alex Karp (Palantir)

They met directly with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

What’s the deal?
- $600B in U.S.–Saudi investment.
- $142B into U.S. military contracts - making it the largest arms deal in history.
- $80B+ into joint tech investments across AI, digital infrastructure, immersive experiences, and cloud systems.
- $20B from Saudi’s DataVolt into U.S.-based AI data centers + energy infrastructure.
- Major U.S. firms like AECOM, Jacobs, and Parsons tapped to build smart airports, mega parks, and digital cities in Saudi Arabia

In plain terms, Saudi money is now fueling America’s most capital-hungry projects: AI data centres, cloud infrastructure, next-gen defense platforms, and (very likely) advanced chip capacity. In exchange, Riyadh secures influence inside U.S. tech supply chains instead of just buying finished kit.

What’s the opposite of friend?
That’s what Saudis are

We are in an unholy trinity with Saudis and Netanyahu (Israel is out of control in Gaza)

For every action there is a reaction

the numbers that get thrown around when AI is in the mix are kinda nuts, but we are in the midlist of a change like nothing before

OpenAI recruits legendary iPhone designer Jony Ive to work on AI hardware in $6.5B deal

Apple really dropped the ball with AI and they had soo much of an advantage over so many of these other firms
but sounds like we are going to get a ChatGPT phone soon and probably will cost half of the iphone and do ten times more

this can be skipped it didn't turn out as clever as I thought.. but if you are interested in AI still an interesting article and I briefly had fun throwing nonsense at  Gemini

so while out securing my papacy I had to chuckle over this story in Wired about how a flaw in AI is that it will try to explain/provide an answer to what ever made up idiom you can think of.

https://www.wired.com/story/google-ai-overviews-meaning/

But sadly the killjoys over at Google caught on to the use of "You Can’t Lick a Badger Twice" and have an explanation for being a fake idiom, etc

I threw at Gemini it "The Cat Got Lost In the Cupboard" a couple weeks ago and it did try to explain it, but sadly the looks like fixed this. The answer was then was  "That's a fun and evocative phrase"  and then tried to give explanation, now you get

"The cat got lost in the cupboard" is a literal phrase, meaning that a cat physically went into a cupboard and then couldn't find its way out.

It's not a common idiom or a phrase with a hidden, metaphorical meaning in English. If you heard someone say this, they would simply be describing a situation where their cat became stuck or disoriented inside a cupboard.

Here is your life hack for today

The AI overview gets disabled if you add in a cuss word. Put this at the end of your search string:

-fuck

It tells Google not to include that word, but it still disables the AI overview.

I wouldn't say blind...see my previous post

So let me get this straight: you’re saying *‘I’m going to use Google to search for things, but I’ll disable the AI Overview… because I don’t trust AI. Instead, I trust a list of outdated, ad-filled results that make me scroll through five pages of SEO fluff just to maybe find the answer I wanted"

Seems like something a vinly lover might says, so that tracks

AI is going to create so much dislocation.

If we are optimistic we can say AI will help by doing things we used to do….

But who gets the gains from that efficiency? Looking at the world we live in as it IS I think those efficiency gains will be translated into $ for those in control of AI and government. I don’t think the people no longer needed to do the work will be compensated much above subsistence level.

Julian’s America will celebrate but inequality will become even more pronounced and that will also mean the end of any democratic norms. We will live in authoritarian regimes presided over by puppets that do the bidding of those that control AI.

This is all not very hard to imagine because we already are seeing signs of it….and beginning to live it.
