Les Savy Fav VS. The Apes/Health
Discuss :)
-
I think this is more like #5.
Apes/Health
But the hipsters will disagree. ;)
-
Les Savy Fav.
The Apes play around here every other month.
-
But Health don't.

Am I the only person who perceives Polvo and the Cure (both Friday, May 9) as a potential show conflict?
It's unlikely I'll see the Cure at Patriot Center -- I loved their Sept. 1989 show at Cameron Indoor Stadium (capacity around 2000), but was not so happy with their show circa 1991 at the Dean Smith Center (capacity around 24,000). And I'm curious to see what Polvo is up to, especially at a venue the size of the Black Cat. But I have to say that both bands inspire high-school era music nostalgia for me.
:)
-
Polvo for me. :D
-
I was all set to buy a Polvo ticket until I realized it was the same night as The Cure. It was a very short conflict, since I already bought Cure tickets. I thought The Cure were great a few years ago at Curiosa. That was my first time since '86 and I wasn't disappointed at all.
-
Not at all. The Cure of today is not the same as the Cure of yesteryears.

i'd say that that the RnR show wins. seeing HF (opening for SFA) was one of the more impressive things i've seen in a while. i get the feeling that they're in a zone right now, so better to catch while catch can. and i'd be curious to see what APTBS's live show is like. but YMMV, so WTF.

I think Sons/Fuck/Strangers is the one to watch. All three bands are strong and all sound as if they'll roast on-stage, though in different ways.
-
It's a conflict, too, but not because of The Most Serene Republic. It's the opener LIAM FINN :)
Yeah, I think I'm going to Sons & Daughters/Holy Fuck/APTBS show. This is one good thing about the East Coast...you never see a bill like this in the Bay Area
I'll just get there early so I can see the bands play!!!

sorry to sound like a broken record, but i have a pair of tickets for the sons/APTBS/HF show that i can't use and need to sell. willing to do so at a loss. PM me if interested.

im trying to find a way to see tilly & the wall - the most serene republic/liam finn - and god is an astronaut all on the same day. dont even know how thats possible with all playing at virtually the same time.

i gotta say that i really enjoyed liam finn's performance on letterman (http://youtube.com/watch?v=T2-EGFS4-ck) recently. he gets credit for keeping it interesting.

Good tip - just picked up his album on eMusic after watching that. This is really good.

the thing that sucks is that the apes, health, les savy fav, and enon arguably share a similar fan base. the fav were one of the first bands to take the apes under their wing when they were new.
i'm gonna be out of the country that week, but i'd be tempted to see the fav, and i booked the health show! both will be solid shows. enon plays here twice a year.

Remix the Apes (http://www.insound.com/noteworthy/promo.php?p=852) and you could end up on the b-side of their new 7"

show conflict - Morcheeba/Digitalism at DC9 (March 24)
hmmm, seen Morcheeba before... heard Digitalism puts on a good show - sold!
(that was easy ;) )
-
This is too easy. Skye no longer sings for Morcheeba. You shouldn't see them based on that fact alone.

By that logic, you'd skip seeing Iron Maiden because Paul Di'Anno no longer sings for them.

wow, been out of the loop and didn't know that... learn something new every day ;) So, out of curiousity, who's the lead singer for this tour? Morcheeba without Skye ??? (what a rip off)
-
I'm not familiar with Iron Maiden but if the new singer doesn't live up to my standards, then yes I will skip the new lineup of Iron Maiden. But I have to be familiar with them first.

Giles,
from wiki:
Sometime in the mid-1990s, the Godfrey brothers (DJ Paul Godfrey and multi-instrumentalist Ross Godfrey) recruited Skye Edwards as vocalist during a chance meeting at a party in which both brothers were introduced to Skye. This led to formation of Morcheeba. Five albums later (2003), Edwards was asked to leave the band by the Godfrey Brothers as the individuals were beginning to go in separate directions musically, as the brothers wanted to try different things and had different musical ambitions.
In 2005 they recorded another album, The Antidote, and recruited Daisy Martey (formerly of the band Noonday Underground) to replace Edwards on vocals. Recently the Godfrey brothers have replaced Martey with another singer - Jody Sternberg - for their live performances. Their new studio album Dive Deep was released in February 2008 in Europe & the UK. This album, produced by Paul & Ross Godfrey, features several guest vocalists including Judie Tzuke, Thomas Dybdahl, Cool Calm Pete, and Manda from the band Nemesea.

No idea.
Oh wait,
RELAXER. That's the name of the new singer.
He's got a very soulful voice.

I thought Blaze Bailey was singing for Morcheeba now...

Carla Bozulich V. Dead Meadow
That's a tough one.

I'm there. Cannot wait to see Strangers, as I've missed the last few shows they've played. And I've been playing Sons & Daughters quite a bit, and I think that's going to be cracklingly good. The disc itself is fine, well-written music, but I hope that on-stage, they'll bring the RAWK.

I saw them open for somebody at the 9:30 Club and found them highly annoying.

They're nothing particularly special, but they have solid, well-written, well-sung songs that often take a catchy riff as a springboard into a big chorus. It's not very innovative and their disc sometimes sounds a little too polished and slick, but if you drape some loud guitars on those songs, I'll bet it will be hot.

Y'know, now that you mention it, I think I saw them as an opener too. What show would that have been? Morning Jacket? Wilco? Trying to think where we'd overlap.
Anyway, I don't remember being very impressed with them at the time. Their current album wasn't out (and obviously I wasn't familiar with them), and it was at the 9:30, so circumstances are different this time.
-
Took a bit of googling, but apparently it was the Decemberists on 10/2/05. Sound right?

JESUS ECLIPSE, that's almost worse.
Who opened for Franz Ferdinand a few years ago? I think it was their first 9:30 show after the debut came out.
-
The only time they are listed as playing the 9;30 Club here: http://www.sonsanddaughtersloveyou.com/shows.php (http://www.sonsanddaughtersloveyou.com/shows.php)
is 10/2/05.
Who did they open for on that date?

on the upside, aren't S&D the closers? if they don't work for you, you'll be able to bail earlier. so it becomes a game-time decision, as opposed to an opener that you have to sit through (or go to the bar upstairs and lose your spot on the floor).
-
Based on my research, S&D have only played once at the 9:30 Club (2005 with the Decemberists)...
You probably saw them at the Black Cat...?

Yep. That's the plan. But if the consensus was that they really, really suck, I wouldn't have to waste the extra 30 minutes of dead time before they come on to find out for myself.
Conversely, if the consensus is "OMG!?! - They're the greatest thing since Lou Reed!!!", I might stick around.

She looked like a somewhat skinnier version of Beth Ditto, or a somewhat heavier version of Meg White.

Anytime you don't pick Gibby you've done yourself a disservice IMHO but to each their own.

Scratch that last one; they're on different nights.
It's Butthole Surfers V. Sharron Kraus/United Bible Studies which is a tougher call.
Butthole Surfers doors are at 7, though. If United Bible Studies don't go on until after 12, both would be doable.

Sorry Sparx but I must take the opposite stand on this one:
Ulrich Schnauss
Edit:
Phew! No stand-off between Sparx and I now. ;)
I plan to be at the DC Ulrich/Auburn Lull show and would like to also go to the Baltimore show but fucking work will probably make that impossible. Not the biggest loss though because I can't stand the sound at the Metro Gallery. Very cool venue except for all those damned glass walls! As you can imagine, the sound is horrendous! I'd rather trek it all the way down to DC if I'm going to an event that involves sound rather than the much, much easier commute and have to deal with totally destroyed sound waves.
-
Enjoy the show Jag! Too much work is never good.

Although I would do neither, I'd recommend you go to the country club. It's probably closer and will be much more surreal. Make sure to take some extra(d.o.c.) to make sure you get the full effect of your suroundings. What a choice of venue. That country club won't know what hit em.
