Any best of 2023 list that doesn't include The Hives - "The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons" is bunk
-
I'm currently relistening to a bunch of stuff and hopefully will have a top 20 bunk list to post here before I leave for Puerto Rico.

or Cave World by Viagra Boys
and I'm sad to agree Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS is one of the best of the year too
I have heard so few of those albums or the artists on that list, will have to do some homework

Actually a pretty decent music year for those of us who are old farts...
The Feelies -- Some Kinda Love (I know, it's a live album of ancient cover songs...but this is stellar. It belongs on here.)
The Damned -- Darkadelic (underrated...not a bad song on it, they just played a few too many at the Fillmore)
Slowdive -- Everything is Alive
Cherry Glazerr -- I Don't Want You Anymore
PJ Harvey -- I Inside the Old Year Dying
Yo La Tengo -- This Stupid World
The Baseball Project -- Grand Salami Time (another greatly underrated LP...a ton of fun)
Drop Nineteens -- Hard Light
The Pretenders -- Relentless (I have to be in the mood for this because it's pretty dour, but still great)
Belle and Sebastian -- Late Developers
The Hives -- The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons
Foo Fighters -- And Here We Are (the Foos at their most vulnerable...and I really do enjoy this one)
Iggy Pop -- Every Loser (silly, not his best, but come on...it's Iggy and he's still kicking)
Everything But the Girl -- Fuse
Depeche Mode -- Memento Mori (one of the strongest LPs since Violator...doesn't say much, but it's actually good)
Bethany Cosentino -- Natural Disaster (she's a great songwriter, beautiful harmonies...this deserved more attention than it got)
Best reissues/new compilations:
Replacements -- Tim (Ed Stasium mix)
Heatmiser -- The Music of Heatmiser
Husker Du -- Tonight Longhorn

This list feels less PR driven then most, plus it has actually albums I really enjoyed unlike to show up elsewhere...

Given that there's a mere one album overlap with my list and given that I'm the only one to post a list do far, I'm going to say lack of evidence of truth to your assertion.

Sufjan-a well deserved 3 spot

It’s been a long long year…for me
I liked the Belle and Sebastian, YLT, Jessie Ware, Lucinda Williams albums that came out but nothing knocked me out
The QOTSA was a bit of a return to form
Most disappointed by the Gaz Coombes…and Iggy Pop…and Ian Hunter….
My favorite concerts were YLT, Love and Rockets, Pixies, Luna, Living Colour, Jeff Tweedy, and Los Auténticos Decadentes (my favorite) oh and the Cure
Truth I didn’t go to many shows but just about everything I saw I loved..

I just don't get the hoopla for that band. I swear, I tried to like them individually, then collectively, but just can't get into any of it.
And though I've come to appreciate the Strokes, I still can't get into Arcade Fire, the White Stripes, or the Hives.
-
Boygenius definitely captures something in the zeitgeist and I think they appeal to you and empower you ‘as needed.’
Did you ever see White Stripes, Arcade Fire or Hives live?

No, yes and no.

Hives are one of the best live acts I've seen. Sound and show are always tight and enthusiastic. Can't say I listen to their recorded stuff that much, it's good and punchy, but nothing like their live show

I can believe that.

Fee things
1. Been listening to TDORF and god damn does this album rock. First listen didn’t really grab me, but now in heavy rotation
2. While I love the VBoys, I alway hang my head in shame about this comment. Technically Cave World came out with a Deluxe edition in 2023, the album came out in 2022
3. Hot take you didn’t want or expect
Olivia >Taylor. I’ve been subjected to about 4ish hours a week listening to my 14 year olds selections which lean very heavily on TS and OR (as well as Eminem?!?) and without out a doubt the songs I unintentionally find my self digging are always OR and almost never TS
