who else got tickets this morning? :)
anyway, anyone have a hotel reservation already? I can split cost... :D
-
yup, i snagged a pair of presales (you're welcome joe :) ) this will be my fourth lolla, and second one in a row.
anyone else score tix this morning?
next opportunity for cheap tickets will be the early bird sale, scheduled for april 1 i believe. $160 instead of $190.
-
sweetcell already knows that I did. Pretty excited about it too.
I love Lolla, if only because I get to go home and see friends and family on top of some outstanding live music.
-
fuck.
i was on deadline this morning and forgot to look. *sigh*

Awesome.

I actually have in-laws to stay with in Chicago for free, but I'll probably never get to goto Lollapalooza, since the annual conference that I always attend is always on the same weekend.

im so mad! WTF I didnt get any email :(
-
according to people with too much time on their hands, the following artists are scheduled to be at lolla (most names come from the band's own website or statements they've made)
Radiohead
Nine Inch Nails
Rhymefest f/ Mucca Pazza
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings
MGMT
Bloc Party
Gogol Bordello
Black Lips
Dierks Bentley
Bang Camaro
John Butler Trio
Flogging Molly
Nicole Atkins & the Sea
Does it Offend You, Yeah?
still unclear who headliner #3 will be. big names being thrown about include foo fighters, bboys, chem bros, beck and wilco; although i'm not convinced that those last two qualify as headliners. i've also read some unconfirmed claims that jack johnson and DMB are definitely off the bill (DMB is playing elsewhere friday and sat). tom petty would be cool, and someone floated the idea of coldplay - would make sense as they have an album coming out.

they didn't send an e-mail this year. you had to refresh the site and find the hidden icon, which occured at 10:29. apparently there was only 2000 presale tickets, vs. last year's 3000 - i don't like that trend, i'm afraid they're phasing them out.
-
Aren't Wilco considered a Chicago band? Tupelo wasn't, but I always feel like Wilco has this Chicagoness to them. And for that reason, I could see them being considered a favorite-son headliner.
I've also heard REM's name thrown in as a possible headliner.
-
woops, the heartbreakers are out of the running - they're playing chicago on 7/02.

wilco: they did play a 6-night stand last month, so they've got some kind of tracktion there. and they have the quantity and quality of "indie cred" that seems to be a prerequisite for playing lolla. but somehow they just don't feel "big" enough to be a true headliner... but they might get the equivalent of last year's interpol slot - playing opposite a radiohead or NIN.
REM: they're playing chicago on 6/06, dunno if that's too close. also, i'd think that RH get sunday-night billing over REM, not sure if REM would settle for a non-top billing.
-
I got the presale tickets too. Had a great time last year. Looking forward to it again.
-
I missed out, but I'm definitely planning on fucking Chicago up that weekend.
-
The Chicago Sun-Times reports Rage Against The Machine (3rd headliner) and Wilco are playing this as well.
Radiohead, NIN, RATM: one of these things, is not like the others; one of these things just doesn't belong...

Wow...

To be fair, after reading DeRogatis' article, it's more of a "here's the newest rumour, and when I asked the producers, they wouldn't confirm nor deny."

Well, if that's legit - would be the best festival headliner lineup since the Coachella that Radiohead headlined.
Wilco definitely claims Chicago as their hometown, by the by.

To be honest, it doesn't really do that much for me. My NIN phase was a decade ago, and I always thought RATM was the most terrible band ever. I like Radiohead and early-Wilco, but I'd really dislike two of the headliners, and I'd imagine a NIN/RATM crowd would be terrible. I know I'm in a small, weird minority, but if we want a 90's band to headline, I'd prefer that STP reunion.
That said, if it's true, it'll sell out FAST.

Totally a personal preference - but Rage, NIN, and Radiohead are three of my all time favorites. So I'd be a happy camper.

Is that the line-up for Lollapalooza '08 or Lollapalooza '98?

i believe i've heard that tired line before...

Have they announced Everclear, Barenaked Ladies, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones yet?
-
rage + wilco is picking up steam (http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2008/03/12/rage-and-wilco-to-play-lollapalooza/). still just a rumor tho.

my bad, early birds actually go on sale march 25. price hasn't been revealed yet, last year they were $165.
-
How about Third Eye Blind, Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Marcy Playground?
-
sounds like yeasayer have been added: see last para (http://blogs.suntimes.com/derogatis/2008/03/sxsw_dispatch_2_on_parties_pan.html#more). shaping up nicely.
after some thought, i think i'd rather not have rage in the line-up. i love their music and what they can do to a crowd - i just hate their crowd. also, lolla organizers had to fight hard to bring the festival to downtown chicago. putting on rage might be too risky, in terms of people getting hurt.
-
I'm only in if they add Sponge, Fastball and Tracy Bonham.

But how you deny the delicious irony of witnessing all the backwards-baseball-capped, muscle-shirted meatheads screaming along to "Bullet in the Head"?
-
oh, it's pretty sweet alright. but having experienced it twice now (coachella and vegoose), i can't say that the sweetness would offset iritation caused by having said meatheads in the crowd for all three days of the festival. if they book RATM, lolla will sell out before they get around to releasing single-day tickets.

according to www.lollapalooza.com (http://www.lollapalooza.com), "2008 line-up coming April 7th"
also, line-up for ACL (Sept 26-28) will be released on April 15.

Bonnaroo '06:
Radiohead, Beck, My Morning Jacket (late night), Elvis Costello, Sonic Youth, Devendra Banhart, Buddy Guy, Cat Power, Malkmus, Son Volt, Seu Jorge, Andrew Bird...
It was pretty damn good.

I went to this, but those headliners aren't accurate (I don't think My Morning Jacket was even there). Elvis Costello played with Allen Toussaint. The headliners were Radiohead, Petty, and Phil Lesh & Friends. Granted, great festival - but I don't think the headliners would beat this rumored Lolla lineup.

I stand corrected.
-
anyone know when tickets go on sale today and for how much? i missed out on the pre-pre-sale the other week so im hoping to grab a pair this time around.
-
early-bird tickets are supposed to go on sale today (3/25). there isn't the mad scramble to get them as there is for the presale tickets, so no need to refresh the site every 30 seconds... they should last at least a full day (last year they didn't sell out and were available for 2 weeks).
keep an eye on lollapalooza.com
-
anyone able to get tix. i keep getting some error message when i click on the buy tix. and their # rings busy at frontgate :(
-
in IE7 (yes, corp upgraded us) i get "service unavailable". i'm also taken to onlinehome.us instead of frontgatetickets or independenttickets, as if they've been hijacked. EDIT: prob has been resolved, and it wasn't a hijack - it was a redirect that was failing.
everything is fine in firefox. http://08lolla.frontgatetickets.com/ (http://08lolla.frontgatetickets.com/) loaded just fine. i was able to put a ticket in my shopping cart and start the checkout process.
so early birds are $175 this year, next tier will be $190 when the early birds sell out, and finally $205 for those buying late.
any luck xNWx?
-
yes i was able to get through. and in all of that i realized i bought tix to another show that webster hall had told me i couldnt get into.
wonder if theres any recourse months and months later. i bought tix during pre-sale for midlake and webster hall had no record of it anywhere. since i couldnt remember where i bought tix i figured maybe the order didnt go through.
wonder if i can get a refund on that one. me thinks not.

Yeah, this approach didn't work for me at all. I just can't be refreshing a website every five minutes, basically for a whole week (they sent an email out Monday saying, "watch the website, sometime this week souvenir tickets will go on sale." I had a group of about 6 watching, and the first person saw that the sale had occured a couple hours after the fact. Oh well, I'll consider that between last year and this year, I'm paying $115 each...
-
$175 tickets sold out, now $190. once those sell out, final price will be $205 until all tickets gone...

"Lollapalooza 2008 headliners confirmed
Lollapalooza's Austin, Texas-based promoters C3 Presents are not scheduled to make their official announcement of the acts performing at this year's weekend-long music festival in Grant Park until Monday, but the Sun-Times has confirmed through industry sources all of the major artists.
Art-rock giants Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, the reunited Rage Against the Machine, Jack White's side project the Raconteurs and hometown heroes Wilco and Kanye West will headline the main stages on Aug. 1-3.
The Raconteurs, Wilco and West will each be making their second appearance at the reinvented destination festival. Other repeaters among the more than 100 acts on this year's bill are Gnarls Barkley, the Black Keys, Broken Social Scene, G. Love & Special Sauce, Blues Traveler and Mates of State.
Quite a few of the other acts -- including many of the most promising -- have earlier performed at Chicago's two independently produced music festivals, Pitchfork and Intonation. These include Bloc Party, Cat Power, Stephen Malkmus, Girl Talk, Kid Sister, Office, the Cool Kids, Battles, the Go! Team, Jamie Lidell and Grizzly Bear.
Advance three-day passes are now on sale for a limited time for $190 (after which the price increases to $205)"
Radiohead, NIN, RATM, Racontours, Wilco, and Kanye West!
this looks to be the best fest out there by far
-
good line-up, should be a ton of fun again.
i'm only lukewarm to the addition of RATM. i'm a huge fan but i've seen them twice already in the past year... they need to release something new, i can't say i'm incredibly excited to see practically the same set again. it's going to be fun, tho, rage always is.
will be interesting to compare wilco and the raconteurs' performances on a big stage, vs. having seen them at the club. and like at VFest, kanye needs to be stuck on a small side-stage if only to get him to rant :p

Awesome. I didn't actually think the supporting cast was that great this year. This strengthens everything up a bit. I'm excited.
-
more bands were added and I couldnt be more excited to see The Enemy added. I missed them when they cancelled in NYC, so this is just awesome. Bring on the British bands!

Hilarious - we choose almost exactly opposite of one another on almost everything on day one, most things on day two (yes, I am serious about Brand New/EITS - EITS doesn't strike me as something I want to see at a festival, and Brand New rocks), and we're in line on day three. Given every other choice you made being opposite the one I was leaning toward (almost), I'd say you should go see the Whigs.
-
my real conflict (and there might be others im forgetting) is:
The Enemy (UK) vs The Go! Team
toadies vs sharon jones (im seeing her at summerstage - so i guess if i love her its a no-brainer)
Margot vs the Postelles
and The National vs Mark Ronson
i guess my decisions arent too hard, but honestly i forgot what half the other bands sounded like so i might have other major conflicts.
cant wait to see love & rockets!
-
according to the EITS website, "We plan on laying pretty low for the next year or so as we work on new songs for a new record. We have no idea how long it might take us, but it will probably be awhile."
i'd go with EITS if i were you.

The after shows are really good this year. Much better than last year.
-
new lolla map (http://www.lollapalooza.com/themap.asp)
need to consult last year's set up, but it looks like there is a stage or two less this year - cool, less sound-bleed. might mean that crowding will be a tad worse, tho, given that the same amount of people have less places to go. addition of a beer garden serving craft brews is a nice touch. glad to see the wine bar is back.
only 2 weeks to go - woohoo!

Holy F*ck added to Friday...replacing Noah & the Whale.

excellent news - i now have a reason to get there early'ish on friday.

I think I am going to do Lollapalooza this year instead of V Fest. What a line up... It also helps that i have a free place to stay the whole time.
Really excited for Mates of State. They are not playing many shows this year.
Anybody have two extra tickets to sell for the Mates of State/MGMT after show?
-
sorry, can't help you there.
just bought some battles/foals tickets earlier today. would have preferred a full set from BSS, but it's sold out. by going to battles/foals at night, i've at least freed myself up to see BSS at the festie.

also its really disappointing that Black Rebel Motorcycle club is like the only "Black" band not to get booked for this festival.
and they're the best one!
ha ha this is a joke right??? BRMC better than love and rockets?? BRMC can't even tie their shoelaces....

Love and Rockets isnt a "black" band.
Black Keys, Black Lips, etc...
I might do the Foals/Battles as well. I missed Foals earlier this year in DC and really want to see them in a smaller club type venue.

I'm psyched as all high hell to go to this. I've never spent more than a day in Chicago. Probably wont see every minute of Lollapalooza - bought Cubs tix for Saturday and might want to see other things in the early afternoons. I think its a great lineup but on each day, nearly all the bands I want to see don't start until about 4:00. Missing out on post-festival shows....as a tourist I'd rather see the city than see Battles twice. I thought about it though.

PigIron, taking advantage of Chicago is the best plan, in my view. I love the bands too, but three full days is more than I need (though I tend to do four full days at SxSW, but we'll ignore that).
My friends who will be there as well always catch a Cubs game. I have some friends I catch up with for lunch and maybe early afternoon stuff. Really makes for a great weekend -- enjoy!!

Thanks. I'll pretty much be a typical, jackass tourist looking for cool things to do. Please, if you know Chicago well, and you can fill me in on something besides Wrigley Field, let me know.
