I'd put my vote in for Margot & The Nuclear So & So's. I picked it up to finish up this month's eMusic haul, and it's boring me to tears.
Any others?
-
I agree...EVERYONE was really hyping that album.
Such a disappointment...ruined my entire year.
-
Among the albums I bought and have been disappointed by:
Mastodon - no fun
Muse - loved their first three albums, just don't like this one.
Islands - Everytime I put this on, I get bored and figure if I want yowly "epic" indie, I'll just listen to Arcade Fire.
Iron Maiden - My intense love for these guys is firmly entrenched in their 80s output.
And it's early (just got it the other day) but I'm not seeing the brilliance of Hot Chip yet.
-
Well here are the highest rated albums on metacritic:
1 Savane by Ali Farka Toure 2006 94
2 Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards by Tom Waits 2006 91
3 Hell Hath No Fury by Clipse 2006 91
4 Ys by Joanna Newsom 2006 89
5 Modern Times by Bob Dylan 2006 89
6 Return To Cookie Mountain by TV On The Radio 2006 89
7 Fishscale by Ghostface Killah 2006 88
8 For Hero: For Fool by Subtle 2006 87
9 Destroyer's Rubies by Destroyer 2006 87
10 The Town And The City by Los Lobos 2006 87
11 Estudando o Pagode by Tom Zé 2006 86
12 'Sno Angel Like You by Howe Gelb 2006 86
13 Boys And Girls In America by The Hold Steady 2006 86
14 Taiga by OOIOO 2006 86
15 The Drift by Scott Walker 2006 85
16 The Crane Wife by The Decemberists 2006 85
17 I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass by Yo La Tengo 2006 85
18 Serena-Maneesh by Serena-Maneesh 2006 84
19 Nashville by Solomon Burke 2006 84
20 Black Cadillac by Rosanne Cash 2006 84
21 Fox Confessor Brings The Flood by Neko Case 2006 84
22 The Letting Go by Bonnie "Prince" Billy 2006 84
23 Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by Arctic Monkeys 2006 83
24 Someone To Drive You Home by The Long Blondes 2006 83
25 Donuts by J Dilla aka Jay Dee 2006 83
26 Game Theory by The Roots 2006 83
27 Like Red On A Rose by Alan Jackson 2006 83
28 Pretty Little Head by Nellie McKay 2006 83
29 Love by The Beatles 2006 83
30 The Body, The Blood, The Machine by The Thermals 2006 83
Of their top 30, only one will make my top 10. Though I quite liked Nellie McKay's debut, I thought her new one was a rambling mess. The recrod company was right in wanting to pare it down.

Wow. I was just about to finish out my emusic haul with this album...

I would've never guessed OOIOO's new album would be in the top 30, let alone the top 30.

I totally agree with the Arctic Monkeys album, too much hype for just one song... (which is pretty good, I must say)

Did U2 or Radiohead release anything this year?

That album's borderline fuckin' amazin'. Making you feel empathy for someone that moves yay is a new emotion in hip-hop . . . .

Thom Yorke did, but i dont think it was overrated. his solo album seemed to come and go without much notice...though i enjoy it thoroughly!

it was fairly universally panned, so it must have been REALLY shitty to have been overrated

If by "fairly universally panned," you mean "given generally favorable reviews (http://www.metacritic.com/music/artists/yorkethom/eraser?q=thom%20yorke)," then yeah...

Who besides Brennser and myself are talking this album up? For me it's a solid four star record that isn't going to change the world, but the song writing and arrangements are solid. It's also one of those that takes a couple times to sink in records.... Besides nkotbie is a Andrew W.K. fan so what do you expect ;)
My overrated choice is The Raconteurs... It's just not a good as it could have been.

Stadium Aracadium - RHCP... I am done with this band.. finished..

Nobody else, I guess. But based on some of the conversation on here, I was expecting a sleeper hit.
Of course, this should be an indication of what kind of esteem I hold you both in :D .

there was definitely a lot of talk about the band on here this year, not sure if it was about the album

You hipsters always abandon bands as soon as they are on top.

As opposed to your normal drug dealer tales in hip-hop which are built on bravado, there's a moral spin/fiber to the rhymes on the Clipse's album. In laymen's terms, by the end of the album, you empathize with the "Bad Guy". (i.e. Rooting for Tony Soprano, even though he bludgeons cats for a living.) Hope that clears it up for you . . .
Move yay = selling cocaine for profit

What didn't you like about the Raconteurs album???? I thought it was pretty hot. Classic, no. But definitely hot. A solid album. Which aside of Wolfmother, I couldn't say for a lotta rock albums this year. Even Tool's new album was kinda eh . . . But I guess when you drop albums like theirs, there's gotta be a plateau somewhere.

ouch! there goes my street cred.....I don't think its that abd but I do admit to selectively listening tto only a couple of songs on it.....but honestly Quiet as a Mouse may be the single best song of the year for me and boring it ain't!
-
i was really rEaLlY ReAlLy REALLY looking forward to hearing the Raconteurs album, being a long time fan of Brendan Benson and whats his name.... However, the record was a huge letdown and disappointment. Besides the obvious singles it sounds unfinished and like a bunch of demos. It may rAwk but it's half assed effort from a talented bunch... Wolfmother did the better job releasing a Raconteurs album then they did.
If you want the RaWk checkout the new Cheap Trick, Keene Brothers and As Fast As...
-
I'm going to go with that Band of Horses record. A couple of good moments (The Funeral, The Great Salt Lake), and a lot of filler, I thought.
-
Yeah Yeah Yeahs was this year, right? Gads, it is all the songs that I disliked on the first album.
The Beatles "Love". I don't know, it just seems "wrong".

i second and third this ... every brendan benson solo album and every white stripes album is better than the raconteurs album ... not a good sign for a "super band"

I forgot about that one, mostly because after 2-3 spins I decided I didn't like it and it disappeared.

word. boring. i gave it to a friend after a few listens. double albums are a no-no in the first place and this album makes the case for a federal prohibition on them.

Right here buddy.
Not the best album in the world. Not my favorite of '06. But it's relatively solid, and they are great live.
-
I guess all opinions are subjective.
Check out this review from popmatters about Margot @ CMJ:
MARGOT AND THE NUCLEAR SO AND SOS @ Rebel
An appearance by Thax Douglas signals that this is a Chicago band, big and orchestrated like Head of Femur, sweetly fractious like Bound Stems. The hall is packed just for them, full of 20-something college djs who can sing along to their baroque-pop ditties. Itâ??s bland, emo-leaning stuff, though, made mildly entertaining by the antics of an auxiliary percussionist, who bangs the bass drum taiko style and executes a simian tambourine dance. Nothing special but, given the rapid fans, quite possibly about to be huge.

If that was the case I would have given up on them after Blood Sugar Sex Magic.. alas that did not happen..
It started happening after they stopped making engaging music which STARTED on the By The way album.
Gave the band another chance, and they unloaded twice the amount of drivel in the form of a double album filled mostly with forgetable pablum. No not the worst album I have heard, but this band bores me to tears now, and that is just wrong.

i agree with john mcenroe, er, brennser. that's probably the only album released this year i'll still listen to regularly in, say, 2009.
i can't into the long blondes album that most people seem to love. or the pipettes, those might be my picks for most overrated that haven't already been said yet.
-
I'm not really diggin' the Pipettes either as it seems forced to me... I remember checkin' them out sometime last year when they were just starting out in London and not being bowled over, seeing as they would be right up my alley. I'm just starting to listen to the Tralala which have a similar girl group inspired sound.
-
You're right. I was just goofing on something he had said the other day in the thread that disses u2.

I wouldn't say it was overrated, but the biggest disappointment was the last Grandaddy record. 2, maybe 3 decent songs and the rest is just dismal.

downloaded it last week and it ain't grabbing me either.....heres one for you - I really don't see what all the fuss about the TV on the Radio album is about....thats probably my most overrated of 06
-
Despite how much play that albums gotten from me this year, I might agree. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it's not nearly as good as Desperate Youths, in my opinion, and shouldn't have everyone shitting their pants over. It's a very good album...but not nearly as great as everyone says.
I might also add deadboy & the Elephantmen to the list. Downloaded that as well, and didn't quite get the fuss. It's decent, but nothing that fantastic. I doubt I'll listen to it much at all.

the deadboy CD came out this year and it's a great listen, haven't seen them live yet...
-
I really have a hard time understanding it, but I have heard the same reaction from others. The 2 deadboy shows I have been to though probably rank among my favorite of the last 5 years. He just has an amazing voice. And they do the two person band better than the other more famous acts who do the same thing. They did actually have a bass player at the last show though. The shows are also great because you have a good amount of Acid Bath fans there, and they add a different element to the crowd.
-
my mistake, I assumed it had come out earlier because I think they played Iota in 2005
-
iTunes says the Deadboy CD came out in 2005. Allmusic shows two releases of the album - one in 2005 and one in 2006.
I don't really have a point. I just wanted to be pedantic.
-
Kosmo, I think we need to have a talk about you constantly disagreeing with me :D

Actually, the track I heard (don't recall the name) was fairly infectious. It was no "SexyBack" but it made me curious enough to listen.

fantastic is an understatement. holy shit. i was standing like 10 feet away from her at iota, and she definitely made me feel kinda funny, like when we used to climb the rope in gym class.
the record is solid, if a bit samey.

I'm definately going to have to disagree with this. I absolutely love Fambly Cat, I really don't see how you could have been disappointed by it. Todd Zilla wasn't very good, though, I could understand if you were talking about that.
