Title: Hercules and Love Affair
Post by: Sage 703 on March 12, 2008, 11:51:00 am
Every now and again, Pitchfork gets things right:

This is outstanding.  9.1 on Pitchfork today.

Me too.  Going to have to venture up to Melody and see if they have it in stock.

What do you guys like about this? I've spun it a few times and it's fine, but it doesn't seem that grabby. The PFork review gets into the music somewhat, but seems mostly impressed with its references and influences.

I really like a lot of the DFA stuff.  This jives with a lot of things that I really like - the James Murphy remix collections, the Disco Not Disco series, Italians Do It Better, Roisin Murphy, Moloko, Faithless, LCD Soundsystem, GusGus, !!!, etc etc.  I like the integration of the horns with this record in particular, and to me, Antony's vocals really fit this better than the Johnsons.

Ultimately?  It makes me want to dance, and has catchy hooks.  That's why I like it, and it has some very interesting arrangements to boot.

I don't care what their references are or that it's a DFA product, and I don't read Pitchfork. I like it because I like it. When I screen tracks if it jumps out at me, it jumps out at me, and I'm feeling this right now. That's my reason. Something more quantitative, let's take "Blind" for example: I'd cite those brilliant horns and the Giorgio synths. "You Belong": I can't resist 808 drum machines. I'm surprised by Antony's voice on these tracks, because up until now I haven't been a fan. Also feeling Juan Maclean's "Happy House."

I like 'Blind' a lot, but for some reason whenever i hear it, it reminds me of Bronski Beat.
