Quite boring weekend...might only hit Black Lips, unless there's other shows I don't know about??
-
Also only doing Black Lips as of now.
-
isn't bob mould this weekend?
-
Yup...same night as Black Lips. Although, it is an early show so both are doable.
-
Headed to Ready Already at The Red and The Black Friday night to dance.
Saturday - Charm City Roller Girl All Stars host the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls at the 5th Regiment Armory, 7 p.m. I'll be there slinging PBR and cheering on my girls. It's $8. You should come say hi and get your derby education before coming to watch yours truly ;)
-
Fri - I may hit the Black Cat, since it's a bunch of bands for free.
Sat - Bob Mould/Blowoff
Sun - sleep all day
-
My wife's uncle is stopping by Sunday and we're watching racing.
I wonder if he's heard the word that Lou Reed is buff.
-
friday: take train home, play with new keyboard
saturday: go to gym, play with keyboard, unpack/repack
sunday: fly to chicago first thing in the morning, visit mom who just had surgery, get ready for week of training.
no music (at least not live, by professionals)
-
the hounds of hasselvander/revelation show tonight is going to be awesome. bobby liebling of pentagram is going to join them to perform some classic pentagram songs, barring a total meltdown. gary isom, one of the best drummers in town (spirit caravan/unorthodox/valkyrie/nitroseed/iron man), drums for them. revelation is playing their first dc show in years.
anybody into doom/psych metal should be there (i.e., those who love sabbath, blue cheer, zeppelin, priest, maiden, ufo, thin lizzy, deep purple, monster magnet, high on fire, boris, etc).
check it out: http://www.myspace.com/thehoundsofhasselvander (http://www.myspace.com/thehoundsofhasselvander)

Hmm...

What's the deal with Pela? Feel like I heard nice things about them, but the album is kinda meh.

they cancelled and are playing in may at the RnR..
-
Thanks, I guess that solves that Friday night dilemma. Laundry it is!
-
The Pela album is very good. You said it's pretty meh, but you wanted to check them out..?

Black Lips played well but (indie show bingo time!) the sound where I was (back by the board) left a lot to be desired.
-
looks like i'll be at tilly and the wall tomorrow. yayz.
-
Weekend's over. ;)
-
I should be there as well! New songs sound great.

Mountain goats is sold out.
And I actually thought to buy tickets in advance this time!
-
The Black Cat is too small for the Mountain Goats, plus it's a Saturday. Glad you got yours.

Hmm...
Mountain Goats cancelled their Australian tour because of "personal health reasons." Hope it's not anything too serious.
-
That was the worst Mountain Goats show I've ever seen. Except for "This Year", the songs did not work with a drummer. Your thoughts?

I really enjoyed it. But it was the only one I've seen so I have nothing to judge it against.
Thought all the new songs sounded good with a drummer but then again, I haven't heard them played without one.
Thought his voice sounded good and strong too.
-
Oh yeah, seen them a dozen times. The best ones are in 2001 during which he didn't have any setlist and set was entirely request only from the audience.
Anyway, here's a video of "This Year" from SF during Noise Pop:

Very.
Fuck Buttons too.
Malkmus>Raveonettes>Caribou/FB
-
Thao was good, but I wasn't blown away...did you go? About 1/2 of the audience left after Thao or after 2 songs from Xiu Xiu.
It was an odd pairing with Xiu Xiu I must say, though. It was my first time seeing Xiu Xiu as a 4 piece and boy were they loud. I wasn't feeling it until the last 5 or 6 songs...very moving...*sigh* need to see them again.....

i was one of those that left after thao. xiu xiu just ain't never been my thang. i wasn't blown away by thao, but i don't usually like bands that blow people away, if that makes any sense. very good songs played well, that's good enough for me on a thursday night. "bag of hammers" and "feet asleep" are just crazy great songs.
-
the filthy youth (cant wait to see how many young girls are trying to see them - Ed from gossip girl is in the band) ... at least its 21+
next week: eels, helio sequence/spinto band, and ambulance ltd/wild light.
-
I think she has a better voice on record than live...but they are indeed very good musicians and the songs were played well.
Did you catch Chris Garneau? He looked and sounded like Sufjan Stevens...

chris garneau was giving off a nico vibe, except nico is a whole lot more manly sounding.
i think thao's vocals are double-tracked a lot on the record, so that could be the reason she sounded better on CD. but then again, most people do, i guess.
-
Raveonettes!!!!!!!!!
-
ghostland observatory for me, who else is going?
-
So Caribou was cancelled. Drummer broke his wrist. :(
But it wasn't a total loss; Fuck Buttons stepped up and delivered a blistering set made up of what I'm pretty sure was Street Horrrsing front to back.
Best $5 I've spent in a while.
-
Very disappointing about the cancellation. But at least I didn't drive 4 1/2 hours like the people behind me (they drove from Blacksburg, VA).
F*ck Buttons were good but people were really there for Caribou. It was just very hard to get excited.

Ehh I left happy.
Surely Caribou will reschedule soon.

anything good this weekend?
-
Les Savy Fav
Dirtbombs
-
Probably going to Apes/Health.
Was strongly considering Dirtbombs earlier but I dunno...
-
Just started listening to the Dirtbombs. Pretty good band. I like the "Wreck My Flow" song from the new album. Might consider this show since Kelly Stolz is opening.

I'm taking it easy this weekend due to money and the fact that I have three nights in a row of shows next weekend.
Just hitting Right Round tonight at the Black Cat for a friend's birthday.
And then saving up the rest of my cash to spend at for drag queen bingo next Tuesday night :D
-
The new Kelley Stoltz is solid.
-
Georgie James on saturday
-
ambulance ltd/wild light/bear hands tonight at maxwells.
and then a slow week till hot chip at the 9:30 club (almost a year to the date from the last time i was there).
-
Georgie James/Olivia and the Housemates
I'd love to see The Apes, but I don't really see that happening tonight.
-
Yeah I think I'm flaking on the apes too. And I have no real excuse; just don't feel like doing anything.
Tis gonna be a slow weekend.

-

Got my sorry ass off the couch this weekend to see the Dirtbombs for the first time and attend a show at the RNR hotel.
Naught special about the RNR Hotel for all the bands felt the sound was lacking especially in the vocals department. One have hardly known that Kelley Stoltzs group had a sax player in it. The vocal mix for the Dirtbombs improved over time, but was still a bit muddy.
The Dirtbombs blew my head off and managed early in their set to play two of my favorites songs in a row. "Sherlock Holmes" and "Motor City Baby".
Ended up with two encores which included a killer INXS cover during the first and the second encore while a bit self indulgent towards the end had drummer Ben Blackwell playing with floor tom on his for a bit, instrument switching and closing out with Blackwell doing his best Thurston Moore impression.
There really needs to be more fun in Rock and Roll again as is the case of Dirtbombs, and will really be glad when whiny indie rocks go out of favor.
Kelley Stoltz was good in the sounds vaguely familiar style, his older rockier material featured towards the end of the set was fun.

I thought Kelly Stoltz sucked but I have little tolerance for his earnest brand of MOR "adult-indie." His Garrison Keillor-esque between song banter was really irritating as well. (And was it my imagination or did he deliver much of it in an affected accent?)
The Dirtbombs were great. The only way I could have enjoyed it more is if they had played "They Hate Us In Scandinavia."

Soooooooo...
Who's got my friday spoon extra(s)?
