Do you love it or should I save my $$?
Never really been a gamer but the hype is making me wonder....
-
If you are a casual gamer and are intimidated by the 360 and PS3, then you should enjoy the Wii. It has a few great games, but I have been disappointed by its lack of outstanding selections and Nintendo's laziness when it comes to expanding on the system's potential. Try it out at a game store or a friend's house before you decide.
-
i have all three of the new systems, and the wii is my least favorite. its good, but sometimes the controls feel gimmicky. also, the graphics look like ps2 games. the first party nintendo software for it is great, ie, mario and smash bros. id go with a ps3 if you can. better, familiar controller, great graphics and sound, starting to have a really bad ass library. the 360 would be my next vote. good graphics, and fun, but with a terrible hardware failure rate.
-
For me the Wii serves it purpose for causal gaming, not being a big fan of first person shooter games. the only drawback is that there is ain't that many must buy games. i.e. Way to many collection of mini-games.
-
I thought this said "will who has one"?
You know, like if you die and shit.
-
I just got one, and I really enjoy it. It's true it's a little more for party gaming, but that's what I like about it. I'm not the type to sit around playing Halo all night long; I'd much rather have games that I can play with people. I've only had it for about a week now, and we haven't even bothered to get a game. My wife and I are having a ton of fun just playing the Sports disc that it came with.
That being said, I'm ready for some Mario Kart Wii action. BRING IT ON!!!
-
Wii graphics are fine.... I think the controller is a lot of fun to use and suspect that as more game developers get use to writing games that take of advantage of it's functionality there will be much more interesting games available.
I tend to buy only well reviewed titles, so have been sticking with the new Zelda, Metroid, Guitar Hero and just started playing Paper Mario. Will probably get Mario Universe at some point, looking forward to Mario Kart and Lego Indiana Jones. Wasn't overly impressed with Super Mario Strikers as it's like to many other Nintendo titles of being to reliant on gimmicks and power-ups. For that reason Super Smash Brothers isn't high on the list.
One thing that is good about the Wii is that it supports old Gamecube games and a number of downloadable titles from the older consoles like NES, SNES, etc...
I've actually been playing more DS titles of late... Lego Star Wars and the latest Advanced Wars game both fun titles.
-
Add ROCK BAND to my want list of future titles as it's been confirmed for the Wii, but it looks like it will be awhile before it comes out... Screw the guitars I want the drums....
-
we have a wii.
we got it the night it was released. my girlfriend bought it actually. i could have waited. she got into a major car accident four days before, but was there in-neck-brace for the midnight onsale. it's been boxed up for 6 months because we don't play it. there's no good games for it really. IMO it's more of a party game system for when you've got a bunch of people over. i think there's some cool things that could be done with it, but for the average game, i don't want to have to flail my arms about (not that i play madden, but if i did, i sure as hell wouldn't want to have to do a throwing motion every time i passed the ball) -- if i wanted to do something that physical i'd just go do something outside instead of playing a video game.
we got a 360 about 8 months after getting the wii and we play it a LOT more ... and the online stuff for the 360 is a lot better.
..it's really about what you're going to be using it for.. if you aren't/weren't really into video games and you are thinking of buying _A_ system, then i'd probably advise buying the wii. it's also the cheapest of the systems if you pay retail price for it.
i think the biggest problem (for me) with the wii is there just aren't enough games out there for it (especially ones i'm interested in). i usually wait a while before buying systems.
-
i've had one for about a year. love it
-
Had mine since day 1 and love it. They're finally getting good games out for network play (brawl and mario kart coming). Wiiware titles will start coming out this year so I think there will be lots of interesting games to download and more experimentation. Spielberg's Boom Blox looks like it will be fun. This is also the first year they'll be doing NCAA football for the wii.
Like Kosmo said, you can also play gamecube games which you can get used for pretty cheap.
Finally, to me it's worth it if only for Wii Sports and Bomberman '93 on the virtual console.
-
Now I just have to find one....
Could get one easily from CL but just don't want to buy there.
-
A friend just got one last week on best buy's website. I think that you just have to keep your eyes open. If you work near a target or best buy, walk through during lunch.

This is how the missus found one. Bought it 3 weeks before Christmas at list price from Amazon.
I'll pretty much echo what everyone else said. Wii is fun for parties and such, but my 360 gets a lot more use.
-
i have a wii and consider myself a casual gamer. i love it... and can't wait to get smash bros.
now .. when are we going to start trading codes and challenging each other in guitar hero, etc.
-
No one has mentioned Super Mario Galaxy (it's the greatest video game ever!). I had high hopes that nkotb would mention it. I guess his good music taste doesn't translate into gaming.
-
I just got it yesterday as an early birthday present. Haven't played it too much yet, but it is a fantastic game.
Speaking of which, I did play a bit over Christmas on my nephew-in-law's Wii, and I was KILLER at that level where you ride the sting ray. I think My record was 48 seconds or something.

I haven't played it yet...was too busy going through old Zeldas the last few months.

once i get my replacement GH III disk back, i'll be up for some Medium level head to head... As with most online play these days, one seems to only run into those people who have nothing else to do all day but master that dragonforce song on expert mode...

No No. I'm still on medium level too. I don't really get to play it even that much anymore. So yeah, we can match up... I'm not some Guitar Hero hustler or anything.

I'm playing at medium too. 360 or PS3? (I'm on 360)
It would be nice to play online against someone who isn't a 15-year old boy telling me how much I suck.
-
we're both on wii.
-
i have never figured out if there is cross platform guitar hero play... hmmm
yeah having to play against young people is just not fair for us with slow reaction times :)
i remember being all excited about playing Mario Kart DS online, until i found out there was a technique called snaking that many people employed to gain the advantage.

Wii Video Games Blamed For Rise In Effeminate Violence (http://www.theonion.com/content/news/wii_video_games_blamed_for_rise_in)
March 17, 2008 | Issue 44â?˘12
WASHINGTONâ??Concerned parents are again blasting the Nintendo Wii for an incident of effeminate violence following a 13-year-old boy's limp-wristed attack on three of his classmates at a Cleveland-area middle school Tuesday.
The incidentâ??the sixth of its kind in as many monthsâ??has left parents searching for answers and struggling to comprehend the dainty assault, which left the necks of two sweaters severely stretched out and countless fingers stubbed.
"These games are a prissy little menace to our society," said Linda Roberts, 35, a mother of three and founder of the group Parents Against Wii, which is suing Nintendo for $52 million in damages from two recent swattings. "One of these days, the red marks on our children's arms might not just go away after five minutes."
The Wii, now the most popular gaming system in the country, most recently came under fire last month, when 15-year-old Los Angeles student Brian Strickland, who reportedly plays Wii Sports tennis, was expelled for flicking his wrist back and forth at a fellow sophomore's head. And in January, 12-year-old Boulder, CO native Andrew Conner, a fan of the WarioWare: Smooth Moves game, was hospitalized after swinging his arm like an elephant trunk into members of the eighth-grade boys basketball team.
"The Nintendo company is knowingly exposing our children to disturbing acts of foppishness right in our living rooms," said Roberts of PAW. "Even more frightening, the motion-sensing technology teaches them that the only way to resolve conflicts is to flail their arms in acts of fruity aggression."
Wii's critics claim that the sissified games use disturbing pastel imagery, graphic representations of adorable characters, and disorienting kaleidoscopes of color to prey on children's basest flaming instincts. The game Dewy's Adventure, in which children control a cute droplet of water who must return fruit to a magical tree, is often cited as one of the worst offenders.
"Three years ago, our children were not prancing after their peers and brutally flicking each other on the playground," Roberts said. "They were well-behaved wimps who spent their recess periods hiding from bullies. What are these terrible games doing to our country's sallies?"
While no scientific link has ever been established, a report to be released by PAW later this month indicates an alarming correlation between Wii's growing popularity and a shocking 200-percent increase in wuss-on-wuss violence. In addition, the group documented 634 incidents of fussy skirmishes, all of which ended in tears.
According to the American Psychological Association, prolonged exposure to cutesy video-game violence can increase aggressive frolicking and angry fluttering in children. Paula Greer, co-chair of the APA Committee on Violence in Video Games and Interactive Media, warned that Wii games reward players for explosive girly behavior rather than enforcing proper negative social consequences.
"The Wii's fluffy flowers and bright peach-colored sunlight glorify chasing precious talking rabbits with plungers," Greer said. "What kind of message is that sending to our children? That it's 'cool' to act like some kind of electrical elf or banana fairy?"
The APA is working with the Entertainment Software Rating Board to update its rating system to reflect the perceived influence of Wii on children's behavior. According to suggested guidelines, games that contain insipid language, vigorous paint scrubbing, and mild to moderate bell-ringing will be rated P for Pansy; those that include simulated sand-pouring and intense lily-pad racing will be rated NP for Namby-Pamby.
But some believe critics of the Wii are overreacting. Benjamin Warren, a First Amendment lawyer based in New York, defended the video game manufacturer, claiming it alone did not invent priggish hostility.
"Limp-wristed flapping has been around for as long as children have had wrists," Warren said. "Our society has always blamed whatever new trend comes along, be it windmills, knitting, the harpsichord, or Jazzercise."
Added Warren, "Wii is just the latest targetâ??a fuzzy, pink, cuddly little target with big eyes and a squeaky voice that just makes you want to eat it up."

the use of snaking on Mario Kart DS was taken to the extreme as one could snake through the entire course not just the curves...
-
Ah, gotcha. I never played the DS version.
P.S. This may be the dorkiest conversation I've ever had on the forum, debating the merits of "snaking" in a video game. But I'm glad I'm having it with you, Kosmo.

Wii Will Rock You!
MTV Games, Harmonix and EA Announce Rock Bandâ?˘ for Wii on June 22, 2008
The number one selling game in February 2008 is coming to Wii!
Cambridge, MA â?? March 24, 2007-- Harmonix, the leading developer of music-based games, and MTV Games, a division of MTV Networks, which is a division of Viacom (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), along with distribution partner Electronic Arts, Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), today announced plans to release the award-winning music video game Rock Band on the Wiiâ?˘ home video game system from Nintendo in the U.S. and Canada on June 22, 2008 for the suggested retail price of $169.99.
Rock Band for Wii will be released as a Special Edition bundle including the software, drums, microphone and a wireless guitar. Stand alone instruments will also be available on June 22nd for people who want to build their band one instrument at a time or want to play the drum versus drum game mode. The game will feature 63 songs including five bonus songs for Wii gamers to enjoy.
â??The Wiiâ??s success among casual and core gamers of all ages makes it an ideal match for the cross-generational appeal of the music featured in Rock Band,â?ť says Bob Picunko, Vice President of Electronic Games and Interactive Products, MTV
â??The social interaction and addictive nature of the Rock Band experience is a perfect fit for the Wii and will undoubtedly be fun for the entire family,â?ť says Steve Singer, licensing VP from Nintendo.
Rock Band is an all-new platform for music fans and gamers to interact with music like never before. The game challenges players to put together a band and tour for fame and fortune â?? all while learning to master lead/bass guitar, drums and vocals. Featuring the most master recordings of any music game ever by the worldâ??s biggest rock artists, Rock Band includes tracks that span every genre of rock ranging from alternative and classic rock to heavy metal and punk. Rock Band is rated â??Tâ?ť for Teen (lyrics, mild suggestive themes) by the ESRB.
Rock Band is currently available on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®, the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, and on the PLAYSTATION®2 computer entertainment system.
EA is the exclusive distribution and marketing partner for Rock Band.
For more information on Rock Band and Harmonix Music Systems please visit www.rockband.com (http://www.rockband.com) and www.harmonixmusic.com. (http://www.harmonixmusic.com.)
and. . . .
Now to answer some of the questions that will appear.
First of all there are five extra songs on disc for the Wii version of the game. As we get closer to launch we'll let you know what they are.
The feature-set is a lot closer to the PS2 version of Rock Band which was also developed by Pi Studios. We've decided to focus on getting the core gameplay on to the Wii and focus on making that awesome.
The instruments don't use the Wiimote. They function the same as our peripherals on the other platforms.
The game will be released in a special edition bundle for $169.99.
It is pretty cool to get a game of this breadth onto the Wii and we are really stoked about it.

So if you can play it on the Wii guitar does that mean you can play it on a real guitar as well?

He's the drummer, so I doubt it.
The regular guitar player in Quickie 'n the Bushes can though.

If they're anything like the four tracks on Side A of Boston's self-titled Debut album that I downloaded last night, you're in for a good time.

has anybody tried the wii zapper? the overly excited salesboy, told me you can use on it a variety of wii games like zelda and metroid, but i got them for resident evil umbrella.
-
has anybody played SingStar (http://www.us.playstation.com/singstar/)? (yes, i realize it's for ps2... didn't want to start another thread)
i'm assuming "amped" would be the most popular version here, with "80's" close behind...
-
Love(d) them. The 80's disc was a good time and so was the Pop version.
But now with the singing part of SingStar being brought into Rock Band, I don't think SingStar been played in 3-4 months.
-
I have it...and the Link game is fun. There may be better zapper accessories out there, though. There's one Nyko has that looks promising if this is something you want.

Wii Guitar Hero Class Action Settled (http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/04/mono-guitar-her.html)
The California judge presiding over the class action lawsuit brought against Activision by San Diego resident Samuel Livingston has dismissed the lawsuit, claiming that the parties had reached an agreement of their own accord.
The suit, brought by Livingston last December, sought unnamed damages from the publisher as compensation for the exclusively monophonic sound found in the Wii version of Guitar Hero III.
Court documents reveal that both parties opted to settle to avoid a "potentially protracted and complex litigation." Details are scarce, but one can presume Livingston is now a more wealthy gamer.
Activision's other actions to correct the issue, including the disc replacement program in place for Wii Guitar Hero fans, will continue through Aug. 31, 2008.
