I can't believe there isn't a roll call yet? Has everyone already lost interest in them? I know its in Columbia but it really isn't that far...

Can't go. However, I am going to take the risk and wait for a show at the 9:30 club, hate shows at DAR or other places such as the one where they are playing tonight. If I have to wait a few years, no problem, saw them in Brazil last year.
-
Going. Great show at DAR. If they could play 1/10 of what they did in December, I won't care about going out on a work night this evening and getting up tomorrow with 4-5 hours of sleep.
-
pixies? who are they. i thought people were going to see bloc party, and to relive how easy the parking is at merriweather.
dar is the bomb, yo, g-money. my backwards hat says so. and the parking is great, too. plus you can shoot up, smoke joints, and stab blondes without even asking what the policy is.
-
Well that didn't suck.

Seeing the Pixies receive their gold records for Surfer Rosa is going down as one of my favorite concert memories. I'm a fucking pansy and I admit it, I had tears in my eyes. It was so hilarious to see Kim Deal jump up and down like a little kid...they looked so damn happy and I feel lucky that I was there to see that. Hey, they're my favorite band...they're good people and I'm glad for them.
As for the performance, it was REALLY solid I thought, except for the occasional mess-up like on "Dead". The sound was a bit muddy on a few of the louder songs, but the humidity doesn't help much. Given that it was so hot and there wasn't a breeze, I really can forgive them for only playing about an hour and 20 minutes. It was just BRUTAL.
I think this was the setlist:
In Heaven
Wave of Mutilation UK Surf
*presentation of gold records*
Where Is My Mind?
Nimrod's Son
Vamos
Bone Machine
Allison (woo-hoo!!! FINALLY!!)
Crackity Jones
Stormy Weather (another surprise)
Tame
Monkey Gone To Heaven
#13 Baby
Cactus
I Bleed
Broken Face
Levitate Me
Hey
Gouge Away
Dead
Debaser
UMass
Isla De Encanta
Caribou (though Something Against You was on the setlist)
Ed is Dead
Planet of Sound
---------------
Gigantic
My ears are ringing slightly but it was worth it. Not sold out by any means, but that was cool. I missed Bloc Party but the guys were standing right by me during the show. Looking forward to seeing them on Thursday.
-
i was there. it was good. the sound was way better than it was in norfolk last year.
today's experience @ merriweather was 1000 times better than my last one.
it's almost 3am, though. i think it's time to sleep.
-
yup once again the pixies dusted the competition, didn't stay for all of it but it was fierce, solid stuff... again no nostalgia here folks, so many current hit bands wish they could be as good as the pixies.
-
caught part of the show from the pit area, where I spied several forumites bopping along on the right side near the stacks. getting into that area is a close to experiencing the same show at the club, as one can get for a large venue concert. the pixies were right up on the edge of stage... i'm hoping that those two White Stripes shows listed elsewhere are at the club and not some other soul sucking dc venue. would much rather see the fury of jack at merriweather then connedstitutional hall.
oh yeah and bring on D-E-V-O some more wannabies need taking out..
-
i think they knew about the riaa beforehand because its noted down on my set list between wave of mutiliation and where is my mind. that said, i so wish i had a camera for that. absolutely priceless moment. if anyone has pics, please pm me.
-
the gold record moment was fun to witness, especially for a 17 year old one... and i guess kim's reaction was for the fact the record was released so many years ago, seeing as the breeders got platinum for "last splash" and doolittle went gold in 95.

>>>Have to agree. The show was spectacular from my pit seats!....Really cool seeing them get the gold records also....The Bloc Party guys were standing right in front of me to the left the entire show....who was the guy wearing the badass Stooges "Funhouse" t-shirt??...was that you bear??
-
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
-
jonas, you, me, and bearman were all about 15 feet from each other all night and never even knew it! and kosmo was standing in front of me. it was a like a secret forum party but nobody knew where anyone else was!
-
i spied everyone on the right side and pretty sure i saw ggw rocking out in the middle somewhere
-
Great show. I got there on the early side and caught most of the BellRays set. The slower more soulful stuff didn't play too well, but when they are hitting their stride, they are fantastic.
Bloc Party were excellent. They came across as a lot stronger than the other flavor-of-the-week bands. I'm looking forward to the Thursday show.
The Pixies were supreme. 'nuff said.

what was hotter, merriweather in june or DAR in december? missed last nite, but that december show was swwwwwwwweaty.

Yep, that was me in the Funhouse shirt totally losing my shit (especially during Caribou). I have NO control when I'm at a Pixies show. I think my friends who were with me were a little scared, but I didn't care. I just do my thing and try not to get in anyone's way. I think if anything they were mildly entertained or at least had a good laugh. I've said it before...the Pixies changed the way I listen to music. Those songs are tattooed on my brain, I know pretty much every single word. It goes without saying that for anyone who saw me going nuts, yes my neck and back are sore today :)

>>>> We were the next 2 guys down from you on your right in your row.....my buddy was standing to my left....about 6'5", bald, kinda looks like a young Hunter Thompson and I was to his right....
-
That's too funny...I assume you got your tix from the Pixiesmusic.com presale? As you could guess, I had a pretty awesome time. My 2 friends I was with have just started dating and they got all cuddly at one point. I was just like "oh JEEZ...whatever". I actually went further up for the encore, then managed to have Chumpy the roadie get me a setlist. I said hi to him and said "I'm..." and he said, "yeah, yeah, I know who you are!" It was hilarious.

Okay, since it's GGW, I assume you mean "bobbing his head slightly at a 25 degree angle..."? :D
-
no there was definite moving of other body parts involved...
-
I was tapping my foot as well.

All three acts were excellent. Definitely worth the drive, the heat, and the price of admission. The Bellrays were loud as all hell and sounded like Tina Turner fronting the Stooges. Damn, that woman sure could belt out a soulful rocker! Bloc Party were flawless as expected by anyone who saw them at the Black Cat. They are not a flavor of the month. Anyone who has listened to their album should know that. Its one of the best of the year. Not a single bad track. And, the Pixies...were the Pixies. they give their all. Similar choice of songs from the first DAR show but the sound was better - louder - at least from the pavillion. Great to hear "Allison."
-
Great show and worth the lack of sleep for work the next day. And worth the 400 degree pavillion area. The two shows they've put on here over the last year have been two of the best I've seen in a while. Watching them get the gold records was priceless. Maybe its just a matter of where I was seated this time, but the crowd seemed more jubilant than the DAR crowd - everyone was singing along word-for-word.
Thought the BellRays were awesome, although the bass volume destroyed my hearing as our seats were very close to speakers. I know nothing about them other than the show. Did someone onstage say they were from LA? If someone can suggest a record please do.
I dont get Bloc Party but maybe I need to listen more. I'm probably just getting old but they sound just like another 80s revival band to me. Damn, they looked like an 80s band too.

I've been a Bellrays fan since I saw them at Sleazefest back in 2000. For the Pixies show, they only played material from the new album The Red White and Black. I haven't really gotten into it but I liked the songs better live. If I had to recommend an album to the uninitiated, I would say 2001's "Grand Fury." Outstanding record that captures their live sound pretty well.
-
Could that concert have been any better? I suppose if they had played Alec Eiffel, River Euphrates, and/or Subbacultcha too. I never got a chance to see them back in the day. What a sublime experience.
I was seven rows back (near Kele from Bloc Party) on the right side facing the stage, tall chick wearing a black tank top and b/w striped pants. Proud to be one of the 3 black women (I saw) there. LOL
Definitely coming to the BP show tomorrow. Say "hey" when you see me.

does that include the singer from the bellrays?
it always makes me feel weird going to concerts and being around such masses of white people. i am white, but elementary school and up through high school my schools were all at least 75% black.

I'm guessing you'll have a 1 in 3 chance. Just say "hey" to all 3

:D

I saw ya MK...I was the one that people were probably afraid to go near. Not like I cared much, the Pixies RULE. :)

LOL Dancing like or lookin' like a freak, were ya mate? :D Rock on!
Me thinks the crowd will be mixed and cool. No worries. Nothing can top the Merle Haggard gig I went to for non-diversity. Would you believe I was even guest-listed for that?
I get around...

According to Billboard.com, the Pixies will be playing an acoustic (http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000963003) (!) set at the Newport folk fest. Now that's a reason to go to Rhode Island.

So is this some bizarro-Dylan-1965-thing?
Formerly electric artist goes acoustic....
