Title: Architecture in Helsinki Rollcall
Post by: HoyaSaxa03 on June 13, 2005, 04:00:00 pm
OK, i didn't really see a need to go see Bloc Party again (especially when tix went on sale like the day after their last show), but i just noticed that Architecture in Helsinki will be at DC9 on Thursday

anyone else going or have seen them before?  it's been a while since i've been to see a band i've never heard before, and i've read really good things about them, seems like a good one to pick

I am dying to go. Have tickets to two different shows that night and am under doctor's orders not to go out (pnuemonia) but I am going to try to see this show.

arrrrrgh, just saw that Bettie Serveert is at black cat ... where have i been??

this is a tough choice: i really like early bettie serveert stuff, but i'm afraid they'll play a bunch of stuff from newer albums that i don't know well ... maybe i'll go out on a limb and go to DC9

It would be great if I could catch some of their set after Bloc Party. There was a Baltimore date scheduled before, but I don't think that will be happening anymore

The architecture in Helsinki is nothing very special.  The art-deco train station is the main highlight.

 Dulles airport is better.

I will be there, quite excited for this one. First band at DC9 usually goes on by 930 on a weeknight.

I'm guessing Bloc Party should be done by 11:15. Anyone know what time AIH will be playing?

it's a cruel thing indeed to have both shows on the same night. my best friend bought me a bloc party ticket for my birthday, but darn it if i don't also want to see aih. they're neato.

Bettie Serveert plays at Iota. A lot. (I'm guessing at least three times in the last 2 years.) I'd go with AIH on this one.

You'll be able to see both, I'd bet.  Bloc Party is announced for 10:00 -- they'll be over by 11:15 (11:30 at the latest).

At DC9, I've found their weeknight shows to run super late.  Last time I was there the headliner went on at 11:45.

Obviously, no guarantees, but head over to DC9 after Bloc Party and you may be able to catch most of their set.

They're playing Rams Head Live in Baltimore on July 6

I may skip Bettie Serveert this time and see Architcture in Helsinki. Can you get tickets in advance or you just need to show up there before the show? How big is the place? Guess it will sell out?

Probably a good call, as Serveert does play Iota multiple times a year...

Just show up at DC9 (no advance sales)...don't know about sellout possibility, though it looks like this is a bit of a 'buzz' show.

Apparently I'll be there as well.

Suggestions on Parking?  I'd take the metro but I got burned by that last time I was at a show that went past midnight.

Well it has been a long night, but totally worth it. Architecture were just plain awesome. I have never seen DC9 so packed. They played a lot of their new album, which is much more organic than their first one. What a great group of folks, they seemed genuinely happy up on stage, happy to be playing music continents away from their home. Head of Femur were a pleasent surprise, and Dr. Dog were probably worse that I imagined they might be. Whenever AIH hit it big I will remember seeing them in such a small venue.

Dr. Dog were really bad. As for Architecture in Helsinki, they are not great either, but things improved quite a bit towards the end.

goddamn, good night of music

first off, DC9 was not prepared at all for that crowd ... we got there around 915 and were some of the last ones let in downstairs, the place was dangerously packed because the upstairs for some reason had not been opened yet, so a makeshift line had sorta formed around the bar to go up, but (as you could imagine), most people couldn't give a fuck about the line ... they started letting people up around 945 or so and at that point the line stretched down to U st (maybe around the corner, couldnt see) ... finally got in at 10 and the first band went on at 10:15 or so, at that point i knew it was going to be a loong night

head of femur were alright, when they weren't doing their slow introspective numbers ... kind of a ska-core type sound with an emo frontman ... sounds horrible, but they pulled it off alright

i thought dr. dog was fantastic, especially the last half of the set ... i really liked the 70s pop/rock vibe they had going, and the dylan-esque vocals of the second lead singer were really compelling ... sure, they weren't pushing any musical boundaries, but as a pop fan, they really hit the sweet spot on more than a few songs

AIH were really fun and really unique, they blended a whole shitload of different styles and tempos and singers and instruments, and it all worked ... we had to leave about 45 mins in (work night), but i'm really glad i made it out to see them

redsock, i agree ... their next show will be at black cat mainstage ... i felt like i was seeing arcade fire on the backstage or something, they'll definitely hit it big in the indie world

DC9 was packed for much of the night (most people i've seen crammed into the top room), but there were definitely a lot of people coming and going
