Anyone planning on hitting this show?
Saturday, April 16
Website with MP3s (http://www.carteldc.com)
"...With a dreamy, anthemic pop sound that seems more at home in Manchester than Washington, Cartel is one of many local groups who are breaking the mold of the traditional D.C. music scene...For a young, unsigned band, Cartel has a remarkably polished sound. Their atmospheric Britpop style sounds like a tightly honed veteran group (Doves, in particular, come to mind) with big label backing." -- DCist blog
"...Cartel who do an accomplished brand of college rock that most strongly recalls great lost indie heroes Dumptruck but also cocks an eye towards similar minded Brits such as Doves. This does so much remind me of the slew of mysterious jangly rock bands that emerged in the wake of REM so many years ago - bands that sounded like they'd also heard a Chameleons record or two in their time. Very very good..." - Norman Records
-
if i'm not up in NYC visiting brooklyn law, i'm there ...
-
I saw this in DCist. I've never seen them but alot of boardies seem pretty positive on them. I like DC9 regardless so seems like a no-lose proposition.
I assume Cartel won't go on until about midnight(?)
-
We should ask Fico, but weekends had been when DC9 scheduled the shows to be over by 11:00 (or maybe 12:00 now) so the DJ can spin the rest of the night (and for the shank of the evening...)
-
Wow!! and here I was waiting till later in the week to start a thread...thanks Bags!
I really do not know what time we are playing but we'll be closing the show..and it's gonna be a great night..we hand picked the openers (at least RAFTH) and we are thrilled to spend the night with you all..
check out the openers:
PS( www.ps-nyc.com) (http://www.ps-nyc.com)) and Run Away From The Humans (www.runawayfromthehumans.com)
I was out of the country for the past 2 weeks and the boys in the band have been talking about 2 new songs which I haven't heard but am supposed to have ready by Saturday so things look interesting..
Hope to see you there!
-
I keep missing Cartel, so I saw the DC9 date and want to get folks interested. Saturday night at DC9 can be fun regardless, then we get the cool bands as well!
I'd probably spend the night hanging there, so would only want to know if y'all went on pretty early...
-
Are you pushing any song as a single? The disc made it to the station and was wondering if you had a preference for airplay.

No preference...whichever song you think will tickle yer listeners ears is a fine pick...other stations have leaned into "Fleets" or "At Night" the most...as long as we get played we don't mind really..so thanks!
-
yeah, fico. . let me know what time you guys are coming on. . .i'm going to the nationals game that night, and i could probably make it if it is a late start time.
-
hey fico - you guys doing a mini-tour?

Not yet..we are playing DC9 this Saturday and next Friday we'll be in NYC opening up for the Trashcan Sinatras. There is another show close to being confirmed for the weekend after that (the 30th) in North Virginia..details will be posted in our website as soon as they come in.
Couple of band members will be out of town in the begining of may but we've been invited to play the live lounge of a certain station you all love *wink wink*, and that could happen mid-May or early June...other things are being worked...the 7" came out in the UK and it's been getting favorable reviews..check our press tab on the site www.carteldc.com (http://www.carteldc.com)
songs of the EP are being played in Spain and France so the spring-summer schedule is looking tops..
-
all right then, another band named Cartel is on a mini-tour all the way out to AZ!

One of the boys in the band is finding out the set times but I think it will go something like this:
ps - 10pm
run away from the humans - 11pm
Cartel - 12am.
could be earlier depending on the set lenghts/set-up time of the other bands..but seems like a fair guess to me.
-
Not sure that I can make it, but I've heard good things about PS (and Cartel of course)...
-
Fleets being played on WOXY at 1:35 as I finish my tea and cookie...the day would be perfect if I didn't have my 1040 form in front of me..
-
Checked out the links to these bands...all sound really well rounded. Kudos to DC9 for booking solid acts. Thanks.

Anyone here from Cincinnati or other cities close by?? We have a radio thingy on May 20th there and would like to line-up a show in the city or surrounding cities..cities like Columbus, Pittsburgh and Charleston seem a possibility, any suggestions??

Post something on the WOXY board. I'm sure one of the many local musicians on there will be able to help you out.
btw -- thanks for the promo CD -- good stuff.
-
Glad you are enjoying it ggw...
We already got a suggestion from the folxs at Woxy...we'll be doing a live lounge session and are thinking of following that up with a show in town that same night..we are trying to set some dates on cities on the way to Cincinnati to make the best of the trip...come by DC9 tomorrow if you get a chance.. we should be playing on/around/after 11:30pm-12:00am

I finally got a (small but dedicated) posse to come! See you Saturday...
-
You can try Nashville as well... I can try getting in touch with someone in De Novo Dahl.
Detroit is an option

It's kinda hard to gauge distances just from seeing a map..how far away would you say these cities are from Cincinnati??
Kosmo, Not sure how big De Novo Dahl is but we'd be happy to do a show trade with them or hook them up here in DC if they can get us a night in Nashville..
any venues in Detroit we should look into??? how far away from Toronto is Detroit??

Ok I'm heading out...see you guys at DC9 tomorrow..say hello!!
-
Sorry I couldn't make it Fico, too hungover from M83...how did the show go?
-
I was planning on coming out after the DJing, but my cat decided at 10pm that it was time to checkout the great outdoors. Had to wait until it decided to come back in house...

yep, same problem with me ... lo siento ...
-
For those who came out thanks a lot!, for those who couldn't, hope to see you next time around...
'Twas a really fun night..the first band www.runawayfromthehumans.com (http://www.runawayfromthehumans.com) were excellent...very new order-ish but in a good way..not in a Bravery way...
the second band www.ps-nyc.com (http://www.ps-nyc.com) were quite energetic and put everyone to shame gearwise..
and then us...I got around to learning the 2 new songs by Saturday morning and they came out pretty solid imho ...anywho we had fun and the crowd was having it so a great night all around.. Bags and Bombey Chutney could give an independent assesment of the show...
-
Fico - Sorry I didn't get to talk to you much. I didn't want to try to yell over ps's set. You guys sounded great. The non-EP songs held up really well. When's the next local gig? The Black Cat in May?
I thought ps was pretty good too. I'd catch them again, given the chance.

Thanks Bombay...the next local show as it stands right now is the Black Cat on May 24th..we have a couple of out of town shows getting set, one of them a session on Woxy's live lounge...I'll roll call it :)
We are quite happy with the new material so it's good to get positive feedback on it...hopefully a more cohesive mix of the old and new will be plastered on a disc once we record a full length...stay tuned...
-
We got there at the end of the ps set and stayed for all of Cartel. Really enjoyed it (not just blowing sunshine up yer ass, Fico :) ). We picked up the CD and look forward to the next show (tho too bad it's the same night as Snow Patrol. Hopefully we can scoot from the 930 to the Black Cat and still catch some of your set).
That's the first time I've been upstairs at DC9 - never made it past the downstairs bar before! I was surprised by how good the sound is. Loud without being distorted or overpowering.
-
I thought it was a great show as well! I don't have the CD, so can't compare old to new songs (I wanted to pick one up on Saturday, but my posse -booked- it to Ben's as soon as Cartel's set was over -- sorry for rushing out!).
Run Away From The Humans was super electronic. Pretty cool, a nice way to slide in to the evening.
I liked PS a lot -- nice bill!
And Cartel was great. It was a damn good night, and Fico looks mighty fine on that stage! ;)
