Title: when the music hits, i feel no pain at all
Post by: thatguy on August 19, 2006, 12:23:00 pm
the three rancid shows at the black cat this week were incredible.  varied setlists, acoustic songs, op ivy and billy bragg covers, and a band just plain having fun.

to top that off, i had the opportunity to go to xm and see the band record an acoustic set for future broadcast on fungus.  my job and the connections i have made have allowed me to see some pretty cool things over the years.  this was right up there with the coolest.  it was literally the band, the sound guy, me, and three or four other people.  i even got to help choose songs and give the guys feedback on how things sounded.  it was the most fun i've had as a fan in a long time.

if you have the opportunity to hear this "you're not invited" concert when it airs sometime in september, do it.

Wow, that sounds like such a great experience and I'm glad that you got the chance to take some time away from the chores of the job to enjoy some of the fruits of your labor.

Glad that you shared that with us. You should join us all a bit more often...even if we are pests at times.   ;)    :p

I waited a day too long to buy tickets.  I posted on craigslist requsting a ticket for Friday's show and got one reply... someone offered me one for $120!?!

Went to the show on Friday, had a good time, never thought I'd hear "knowledge," very cool.

Rancid asked me to do the poster for the show about two weeks ahead of time and the above is what I came up with. I did not make as many as I usually do but there are a few left at http://www.eljefedesign.com (http://www.eljefedesign.com)

I must say, I have seen very few bands that many time in a row and Rancid were good every night. They did not bore me by playing the same set, repeating the same banter about Minor Threat being from DC, or pass out drunk. Watching them the last three nights was as good as when I saw them 12 years ago.

I saw them on Wednesday, it was a fun show.  Anyone have setlists?  I'd like to know what songs I missed on Thursday and Friday.

That XM show sounds like it was alot of fun.  I got the chance to see the Aquabats in the Fungus studio, it was really cool.  I wish there was an easy way to find out when those shows are happening, although I guess that would kind of defeat the purpose.

I  thought Friday was the best night since all the opening bands I really enjoyed. The Heart Attacks played a cross between the Dead Boys, New York Dolls, and AC/DC - going so far as to play Dirty Deeds.

Theo and The Skyscrapers (because her band is so tall) were awesome as well playing a mix of punk and disco. Been listening to the CD for the last couple and days and glad I got it. I believe they are playing in Baltimore next month.

Rancid was great on all three days but I did not notice a major change in songs or attitude. They played balls out every night and made it worthwhile to go. I did notice they played Timebomb only on Thursday and Friday.

Damn, I'm really regretting missing these shows. Any more OPIV covers other than Sound System and Knowledge?

Could be - I wasn't at the show unfortunately.  The recording I have starts with Journey to the End.  The Wars End is on the same track as Black Derby - track 12.

How was the crowd?  The taper posted that it was the 1st time he'd seen barriers set up in front of the Black Cat stage.

The barriers and not selling bottles beers was just a precaution. From my vantage point it was not too crazy and anything that did flare up was quickly squelched by the good staff.
