...to play at DC9 for a BigYawn sponsored evening, who would it be? And be realistic.
-
Myracle Brah
Your Pal (Pete Wright)
De Novo Dahl
Cassettes
-
Leisure (http://www.people.umass.edu/thoyt/leisure/)
one of pitchforks bands to watch in 04 - downloaded 3 songs and they're quite good....they're a Boston band though

So weird...a friend of mine has been trying to get me to give scout a call for awhile...an odd coincidence.
-
The Stranglers are touring Europe at the moment, if you could get them over here I would be most grateful.
-
I second Your Pal, Pete Wright.
Also.....What about Poorlulu's favourite band?

I've already had a discussion with Matt about them...we'll have to talk.

The Soft Life is one of my maybe three favorite albums of 2003. And they just hang and do shows in NYC. I've emailed them and they would probably be interested if a venue is being offered up...

How about Bob Mould's band Loudbomb?
-
Have you heard anything from his new band...are they any good?

What's the deal with that picture of an ugly hag in the DC9 advert in the City Paper? That aint exactly gonna rake the crowds in...

YEAH!!! Or maybe Tsunami?

I saw them last summer at the Black Cat. They're good, but it's not the guitar-driven Mould of the past. 90% instrumental. I'm tempted to call it dance music - very beat and groove-oriented, but it had a bit of an edge to it. I thought it was really interesting, but don't expect anything similar to the typical pop/rock song structure.
-
I've been waiting to see Starbelly. Like Myracle Brah they're a Balt-area pop act with an excellent new CD out on NotLame. Check out the ample samples on Starbelly.com.
-
oops, the correct starbelly samples link would be http://www.starbelly.tv/everyday.html (http://www.starbelly.tv/everyday.html)
-
i'd like to see Starbelly as well, but they are a hard band to pin down... seeing as the bass and guitar players have several side projects. it's basically a group of solo musicians who come together to do a record under the name Starbelly. there is a new record in the works which hopefully means that more gigs other than a bi-monthly annapolis gig are in the future. they have also added a keyboard/second guitar player to the lineup which will give themselves a bit more depth soundwise.
of course i'm not sure i want to share Starbelly with certain forum members who like "pretty" bass players :D bad enough i almost lost kosmette...

Before this gets out of hand, I was kidding on both accounts.
-
I kinda figured you were...but wanted to clear it up anyway. Someone was gonna say something bout the Clov. Glad it was done tastefully.
-
Yeah, you dont want exit clov scaring away, the bigyawn party goers.

yeah yeah yeah...
If Scout says no... :p

What about the Wrens?
They need to come back to DC, and they seem very 'zine friendly.
-
Yeah, the Wrens -- a friend of mine is a real low level promoter, and they were totally going to do her gig in Lowell, MA, but they can't make it date-wise. And they're just up in NJ -- probably depends on when the bigyawn party is....
-
How about Velvet Crush?

Last time they played here it was backstage at the Black Cat.
How "big" is DC9?

I agree with ggw; DC9 seems bigger than the backstage, but I could be wrong. (It's probably just nicer...) Plus, we have no idea how either place pays bands...

It would be really cool if you got the Wrens.

Well, I have a pretty good idea how DC9 pays...working out details as we speak. Thoguh, I didn't realize the Wrens played on the Backstage, that's crazy.

yah...I saw them the other weekend - they played to me and about 5 people that showed up at Iota. Very friendly people too - they might be up for it. I can investigate further if ya like! 4 Way St. who played with them would do it (but I'm not akeen to them, others are though). Endochine (third band that played with the two) would definitely do it, just depending on the time of the event as they just returned to Austin.
-
The Wrens would be fantastic! They played the Backstage as the media was just picking up on them so it wasn't too out of hand packed. I'm sure they would sell out the Mainstage now. If not, then very close to it.
I think that I've already posted this in the Just Announced thread a week or two ago but The Wrens are supposed to be playing The Ottobar at yet some unannounced date as of yet.
Other possibilities would be...
Phaser (of course I'd suggest them :D )
The Carlsonics
Myracle Brah
Beauty Pill
The Lilys
Metropolitan
Highspire (Very good Shoegazers from Philly. I can hook you up with one of the members.)
PS: PLEASE make it on a Friday or Saturday night. ;)

Jag, I am so upset I am likely to miss the phaser show on the 24th of april. It would be worth it to try and get them to play DC9...thoguh they might again be too big. Maybe I am simply underestimating the fact that bands want to play, bottom line. We'll see. And don't worry, its on a Friday night.
-
Oh, no! Why are you missing the show? (If you care to share.) Sorry about that. What about the interview? Will that still happen in some capacity? You should be able to work that out somehow with them being local, even if it's only meeting a few of them over beers some evening.
Yeah, they probably are a bit big for DC9 but you never know. I would tend to think it's more a money issue than anything, which is understandable. You can always look into it and decide against it if things don't fit. They may be up for it as they are now trying out new songs on us before they commit them to disc. That's when established bands like to play smaller venues.
-
no, it likely doesn't effect the interview...

I'm missing Phaser too; going to NYC for GBV. Hope they play again soon....
-
I thought of Phaser too. I heard of them through this forum. Also, Q not U - aren't they local? I heard about them too from the board, so I don't know a lot about them. I have the Phaser show tentative in my calendar.

www.forgetcassettes.com (http://www.forgetcassettes.com)
They are on WOXY and KEXP; they've toured with Q & Not U, and are playing with Metric in their hometown of Memphis.
Lest you think they are too indie or arcane for the Bigyawnapalooza -- they are even playing FC in the Nordstrom juniors department.
-

I used to work with the singer at the record store. those guys are really a couple "handshakes" away from a good record deal i think.

Dude, you're far too tall to shop in that section.

I LOVE Forget Cassettes, I got thier CD last year and subsequently lost it, BUT that shit is very very cool and would be pretty kick ass to have em play at a BigYawn show. :)

So, in theory, do folks feel Bigger Lovers and The Apes would work sound wise?

Bigger Lovers would thrill the bejesus out of me, and will inspire me to force my friends to check 'em out. But I'm going regardless of the band.
Don't know the Apes...
-
I haven't heard the Bigger Lovers, but I think The Apes would be great in DC9.

The apes recorded material makes me want to die.
-
You mighteven get hermits like us out of the house if you had the Bigger Lovers.
And the curiosity factor might kick in with the Apes knowing that my wife's previous boyfriend briefly dated the girl in the band.
-
well, the question is...those of you who have heard both bands, do you think he sound is too far apart? I'm worried it is.

nothing wrong with that, especially since it is a big yawn night, not just a show for one of the bands

Patience people, patience....an old proverb states
"Two bulls were sitting on a hill looking over a field of cows. The younger bull says to the older one, 'let's run down the hill and fuck those two cows'. The older bull responds back 'patience, let's walk down the hill and fuck them all'"
BigYawn (http://www.bigyawn.net) is taking a walk.

French kicks blow... That idlewild show was gruesome up until the boys came on.
Frech Toast are pretty cool actually.
-
I saw French Toast open for Q and not U a while back and thought they were great. I'd definitely like to see them again.
-
I've never heard the music of French Kicks, but I have always loved this cover of theirs. The first time I saw it, I laughed so much! It is so cute! :)
Who knows? Perhaps this is what the British Sea Power owl gets into (smoking, not French Kicks) on his days off. ;)

Yes! I saw them in Va. Beach. When I got home I scoured the internet for their site/music/schedule. I thought they are (originally) from WVA, dunno. French toast from Amphora's is pretty damn good too. ;)

How about The Volta Sound from Cleveland. Why not make it a full on Cleveland night with New Planet Trampoline as well.

Well, no Apes.... they and The Wrens are the only two bands to tell me no, so far...
I have to admit, this concert booking thing is kinda fun, though stressful. You're literally writing your favorite bands to play your show, but you still have to have someone play the show if they all turn you down.
-
face it, they're all gonna turn you down.
then you're going to have to beg Fico to play. :D

Let the rumors begin....a certain band from Phili has confirmed they will be appearing at the BigYawn party. But who could it be? Let's just say it is a b-day present for Bags.

GGW was closer...Burning Brides, Bags, BigYawn...it was a band mentioned earlier in this thread too.

Burning Brides are closer to Bigger Lovers than the roots are in what respect? Obscurity? Alphabetically?

It's all in the alliteration!!!
-
get the carlsonics to open! oh wait, I can't go without dusting off a fake ID. what a load.
the DC indie music scene only exists thanks to the efforts of the first wave of punk bands...and they couldn't even buy tickets to the shows they were playing until MacKaye and the boys stepped in. Music venues - especially in DC - should be all ages. End of story.
-
Highspire?
But doesn't fit the other clues. Too bad.
