Washington, D.C. Merriweather (13)
Forum party in the 9.32 bar w/ DJs Kosmo, Brennserforce, and Sal Paradise??? :)

Rhett, nobody cares for your stupid comments, even if you think they're "funny" or "amusing". If you don't care about the Pixies, then keep your snide remarks to yourself. I don't talk about how the Old 97s suck, so for those of us that love the Pixies, just go find a life somewhere else and leave them (and us) alone. Please.
-
can we somehow post that at the top of the forum
in my 2 1/2 years here, that was definitely the best post ever!!!!
-
Listen, sweetie. Stop getting your panties in a wad. I didn't say that the Pixies suck.
And actually, I'm willing to bet there are a few people in the world who find me amusing.

I won't even acknowledge that with a response.
On a happier note, I'm just glad that the Pixies are coming back. Thank God I will be in town that night.

and Miss Marple on the mic... that way we'll be sure to cover the fact that indie singers can't be understood.
for the record i'm grumpy these days due to certain unfunny remarks here.
besides charlie only likes Olds 97 and DBT because he's getting the most for his money at such shows. personally give me something that short and sweet and makes me want to jump and shout, verses checking my watch.

LCD Soundsystem / MIA on sunday night
Pixies on monday night
going to be a rough week at work...

you'd lose b/c he does humor more than another loon.

i dont know
personally i think less Rhett = more funny
the same crappy lines over and over again get old, but if it was spread out more, it would catch you off guard and perhaps be funny more often.

Hmm..I was hoping for Tom Petty show...

rhett miller covered Wave of Mutilation.
-
Now that was funny. I have it on a mix cd a friend made for me. But not nearly as funny as the tracks she put on it from his first solo album from when he was a teenager...absolutely horrible stuff.

I caught the Pixies up at the Tweeter in NJ ...sixth row....if you have not seen this tour get the hell to it..it was so amazing I still talk about it...my voice was shot for a week
and its kinda cool to be standing there saying "man thats the mother f***ing Pixies right there"

I will definitely be going to this. The shows at D.A.R. were some of the best of '04 and I'm sure the Merriweather show will be among the best of '05.
-
Blech, a Monday.
-
Blech, Merriweather. I'll pass.
-
Merriweather is alot better than the concrete POS in Virginia. For one it has the ever so cool 932, a Backbar in the burbs. It's easier to get out of, and if you plan ahead not hard to get into either.
-
After Curiosa, I'd go back to Merriweather in a second. Not ideal to get to, but once you're there it's awesome. 9:32 was a blast, all in all it's just a much better outdoor venue compared to all the other ones I've seen...better than Nissan, Tweeter Center (Philly and Chicago), Hi-Fi Buys in Atlanta, etc.

and its cool cause its not called "Nissan" or "Best Buy" or some lame-ass corporate name...

Not a good bet on a board where Terri Schiavo jokes had a strong run.
I wouldn't advise Rhett to drop statistics for a career in stand-up, but if you don't think the guy rips a pretty funny one every once in a while, your sense of humor might need a tune-up.

maybe the dc area can get its own gorge/red rocks someday.

Merriweather was designed by Frank Gehry to be an acoustically fabulous outdoor venue. And it is....and it's the only nice thing about Columbia, Maryland. So, the Pixies will sound fabulous there.
I too was at the Curiosa festival last year and it was great...except for the jock a** who spilled beer all over my favorite summer dress.

i might have gotten to check that out if i hadn't been stuck in traffic for 3 hours on the way to radiohead. not only that but having a parking fee 'included' in the ticket price only to end up having to park at the mall also wasn't really too pleasing to me.

when did you go?
i remember thinking on my way there for curiousa that the traffic wasn't as bad that day as it has been on my previous trips out there

i think the radiohead show was 8/22/03? or 8/20/03? and as far as leaving earlier, i might have if i hadn't been sick. i still planned to go and all, i just wasn't anticipating taking 5.5 hours to drive 150 miles. i mean averaging under 25mph on a trip on the interstate is just ridiculous. most of that time was spent in maryland too.
-
yeah, but the Pixies arent as good as Radiohead! traffic should be much lighter.
*prepares for vicious flaming and lazy eye jokes*

yeah, thats the main reason i didn't go to Radiohead..i figured by the time i got out there i'd be pissed off by the traffic and really cranky and have a horrible time
prior to Curiousa i had gone to see REM there like in 98 or 99...traffic was sooooooo bad...it sucked

At least the Pixies got it right and are playing Merriweather and not Bull Run <runs for the hills>

dude.
not only did i have tickets for both bull run radiohead shows, but i also had tickets for the toronto show in 03 that got postponed because of the blackout. then i missed half of the merriweather show. i just have bad luck with radiohead. i couldn't make the rescheduled radiohead date for toronto either.
fuck radiohead. they said DC had first priority on the next tour because of the whole bull run incident... then they played ONE night @ merriweather. that doesn't make up for bull run at all.

i was in the EXACT same boat as you, had tickets to both Bull Run shows, had PIT tickets to the Toronto show and actually drove all the way there and then couldnt make the rescheduled date.
but i didnt miss one second of the Merriweather show.
and i would fuck Radiohead if i had the opportunity.

that radiohead show was some of the worst pre-show traffic i'd ever seen ... we made it while 2+2=5 was starting (i think)

i had pit tickets for toronto as well. i ended up with pit (or general admission) tickets for all of the 03 shows i saw except for merriweather. i went to the montreal show the night before toronto was supposed to happen, so..
though a friend of mine did fly all the way from san francisco to go to the toronto show (he has relatives there, so it was see radiohead + see relatives, but mainly it was for seeing radiohead) and he got totally screwed.
all complaints aside i have seen them 8 times and one of the highlights was being at the live@the 10 spot show in 97.. i just feel like i should have seen them more.

i feel sorry for you no more! I have only seen them 4 times!!!

8 times not without cost. of those 8 times the only one that was under 300 miles from my house was the merriweather show which i missed half of. i have had to go to extraordinary means to see them! nyc(2), toronto, montreal, altanta(2), coachella.
but back to the pixies. i saw them @ norfolk last year. the better thing about that show was the fact that it was general admission, though the sound wasn't that good in the basketball arena. if i could get decent tickets for merriweather i might go. i don't know. i'm just not too keen on that place at all.

does this have anything to do with your screen name?? :)

no.
nor does it have anything to do with the cake song. i've been using this name longer than that. do you have any idea how many times i've had people say 'he's going the distance' since that damn song came out in 1996?

So why was the traffic for the Radiohead show so insanely bad? I've been going to MPP for over 20 years and I've never had any difficulty getting there on time. Why was this one so painful?
-

i don't know the fluid dynamics behind it, but it took us almost 3 hours to get there from NW DC ... much of it was spent in the time off the interstate, near the venue ... i hate being stuck in traffic and being late to concerts, so this one was really painful
made me happy that i don't own a car...
-
traffic was horrible to radiohead because it was rush hour and there was an orioles home game.
-
unless you were working with us, or are the guy from scotland that i sent away in tears, complaining about the bull run shows is VERBOTEN. no matter what your story is, it wasn't that bad, and we've heard it already anyway.
radiohead has apparently angered the gods, and should never try to play dc ever again.

i say they should try to make up for it and do like 4 nights at a general admission place in the dc area.

Am I the only one hearing rumours that Sonic Youth might be opening this show?

radiohead is playing at my house...my house.
-
my ipod just shuffled over to radiohead's "street spirit [fade out]" from the bends ... i hadn't heard the song in a while and i can't believe how much the opening guitar riff sounds like Guns n Roses ... wow ...
-
can anyone help me out, what GnR song does it sound like, this is killing me ...
-
the MPP radiohead show was annoying for me because they had this shitty "no camera" rule which apparently also included cell phones with photo capabilities. not that i planned to use my camera phone at the show, but i just happened to switch to a picture cell phone not too long before that and it didn't even occur to me that i should leave it at home in the event of a no-"camera" policy. i mean, wtf?? my phone takes the worst pictures ever...i couldn't even take a clear photo of the person sitting next to me, nevertheless to take a photo of the band (especially considering i was seated near the back of the pavilion).
so, the assholes checking bags made me take it all the way back to the car which was parked way out at the columbia mall. there was a whole group of us (i didn't drive) and, luckily, the person with the car keys hadn't gone in yet. otherwise, i guess i would've been ditching my cell phone, or would've listened to the show from outside the venue. what if i someone had dropped me off, or i had taken a taxi from my friend's apartment in columbia (which i did for curiosa)? ended up missing malkmus and barely made it for the first radiohead song. i was uber pissed.

Something off the Use your Illusion albums maybe? I'm not hearing it.

Speaking of Radiohead, I've been listening to the archive of last night's Swingin Doors on KEXP, and they played Gillian Welch doing a Radiohead cover. "Black Star" or something like that. I think I'll stick to her own stuff.

i want to say the porterhouse ... on parliament in temple bar, a half block from my flat ... this guy played a really sped-up acoustic guitar set every thursday, the strumming was double or triple-time for every song, but it was great ...
-
by the way, i know its kind of hard to have a tourist bar as your local ... but i was living in temple bar! not many other options, although this great late-night dive, isolde's tower was on the first floor of our building ...

the porterhouse isn't that bad - the Oliver St John Gogarty - now theres a tourist bar! - I actually used to work at the 'original' porterhouse in Bray

Any idea when tix go on sale? And are Merriweather tix still sold through Ticketmaster?
-
sy added to the bill (http://www.sonicyouth.com/calendar/index.html)
am i dreaming?
-
Holy crap. That's an amazing bill.
-
OMG...this is going to be one of those concerts that people will be talking about for years. That will be unreal! Looks like I have to take that afternoon off of work.
-
Have these shows been officially announced (i.e., do we know when tix go on sale yet?)
[FYI, nothing listed on pixiesmusic.com, and that site tends to list on sale dates....]
-
Nuthin' yet. Keep your eyes peeled here for info on a presale (with whining to follow).
-
Confirmed? FUCK YES. This will be my favorite show of the summer.
