Hey, going to NYC in a few weekends, seeing Spamalot, wanted to catch a show while I was up there. Know about Bowery Ballroom and the more well known venues; any recs about smaller places to check out?
-
i love the Mercury Lounge. just get tix in advance cause it sells out a lot.
-
There's two that I've heard are pretty good....one is called "Center Park" or something like that, and the other "Madisons Garden Square"
;)
-
another place i like to go is North Six in Brooklyn. not the best place to see a show, but the crowd is always entertaining to say the least, and the drinks are cheap (for NYC).
-
Piano's, Southpaw in Brooklyn, Rothko, Sin-E, the Delancey.

you can probably give the Cutting Room a miss, went there to see a friend do an industry showcase and beyond the cover there was a $10 minimum. and you would never know the place was owned by chris noth, seeing is there are not one but two pictures of him hanging on the walls...

a friend of mine lives(d) in South Brooklyn and i have been there a few times. whats it to ya?
-
i like tonic and webster hall (although bands at webster hall havent been sounding too great as of late).
-
the knit is my joint...1/9 downtown and all.
the places unmentioned as of yet:
Todd P (www.toddpnyc.com) is the MAN in brooklyn. all the house shows, crazed polish disco parties, outdoor freak-outs, etc. are his doing. check out the Narchitect Castle (formerly Mighty Robot), Club Exit, Glasshouse Gallery and Cake Shop. His own place, Llano Estacado, was raided by the cops (while I was there seeing Black Dice, actually...) and will be on the DL for a while...
Also Rothko and 12 Little Devils on the LES and The Hook in Red Hook.
Don't forget to say that walkie sent ya...
-
Hey Walkie, you been to asterisk yet? I've been there a few times, two were good, one sucked.
My friend Mike's band Chamisa Mesa (http://www.chamisamesa.com) might be right up your alley. They've played The Hook, Piano's, etc.

The Knitting Factory is one of the worst clubs I have ever been too. I have been there twice. It is such an akward building and the bar tenders couldn't be bothered. North Six is great and so is The Bowery. Warsaw is wonderful, but I don't think they have a regular schedule there. I have seen the Polyphonic Spree there on several occasions, and they serve polish beer and greasey polish food!
-
Walkie, how is the Cake Shop? Some band that I was interested in is playing there. I was just reading about that the other day and it sounded kind of interesting. Smallish with some halfway decent very new Shoegaze, Indie and other type bands. Struck me as having a bit of a Warehouse Next Door kind of vibe. But you know how you really don't know what a venue is like unless you've been there or have a good report.

How bout Irving Plaza? I may head up to see Ted Leo in a few weeks...
-
If you dig jazz, hit up Iridium.
CBGB is just as shitty and run-down as you think it would be.
Tonic is fun.
Hammerstein Ballroom is nice.
Roseland is also cool.
Beacon is swell.
MSG and Radio City have a lot of history (RCMH even has elevator attendants).
Webster Hall is just ok.
Knitting Factory really is a bad venue.
Bowery Ballroom is alright.
Joe's Pub isn't bad. Not great though.
Apollo Theatre is scary at night.
Living Room is only satisfactory.

Site of one of my favorite shows -- the Hoodoo Gurus sometime in the late 80s (I'm not good at remembering that stuff...). Good place.

There's also:
Club Rare
Delancy Lounge
Crash Mansion
All 3 have diverse lineups depending on the night of the week.
Rothko is back open? We were suppose to play a show there in Feb with Fixmer/McCarthy (Terrance Fixmer and Douglas McCarthy(Nizter Ebb)), but it was shut down the night before by the Fire Marshall.

I can put up with anything (...hmmm thinking Velvet Lounge) for the right band. I loved Knitting Factory - and couldn't care less about the bartenders...I've been ignored by the best of 'em. I LOVE the Hammerstein but some groups could be LOST there with the size/stage. I have a question: Anyone been to Tribeca Rock Club? How about Arlene's grocery? Size?

Agreed, re: the right band. As for the clubs you mention, Tribeca seems to be all jambands all the time...euuughhhhhh.
As for Arlene's Grocery, I've only ever seen friends' bands there--you know, the sort of bands that only a friend could love.
Oh and Jag...Cakeshop is really pretty cool. Record store/cafe by day, rock joint by night. It's on Ludlow, so right in the middle of the LES scene...which reminds me, has anyone mentioned Sin-E yet? One of the best spots in the city, especially when they bust out the $2 drink specials. One word of warning: what with the relative isolation of the neighborhood from convenient trains (the F? please!) and the plethora of after-hours watering holes, you may be hard-pressed to escape before dawn.

At what club does DJ Walkie Walk spin?

Arlene's has a website now...shows appear to be rotating vice regular schedule.
thanks for the others details - forgot about Sin-E.

missed you this past year, cap'n. oh and thanks for the lack of name-change--it's like I never left.
I'm actually starting a weekly gig this fall with my radio co-host (and DC native) Selecta Swest at a local (to me, at least) dive called the Ding Dong Lounge on Columbus at 106th. 60's psych/garage/soul and 70's/80's punk from midnight til 2, funk/hiphop/reggae/electro til close. This past year, I was part of a rotating, borough-hopping monthly shindig called Thumper, but sadly our fearless leader, DJ Suerte, has graduated and moved to Chile, leaving the future of Thumper in flux...

I liked North Six a lot. It's the closest thing NYC has to the Black Cat. :)
