I could be heading out to this one solo, anyone want to buy me a beer? Is it gonna sell out before i buy my ticket?
-
Well Poorlulu, Pollard, Rhettballs, Celesteballs and I are going for starters. So you shouldnt be too lonely. I thought there was a chance it might sell out. BSS seem to have a lot of good word of mouth.
I could possibly pick up a ticket for you tionight. Stellastarr never emailed back.

Oh, cool. if could that would be super...and i'll get you back on Thursday. I'm getting someone in trouble as we speak.
-
I'm going. With my chatty friend. I will certainly buy you a beer, my new music and local venue guru-in-the-making....
-
I'll be there.
-
already bought a ticket

nkotBALLS will also be there.

You just figured out what I had pegged out as tomorrow's nickname. Sorry I haven't honored you yet, that's a good one.

That's pretty funny. I was actually going to switch my name to that once you started changing yours.

I bought my advance tix for the BSS show last night, and there were three other people buying for the show too-- they bought 4 each. The poor Black Cat advance-ticket-sale-guy was lookin' quite frazzled as more people approached him for BSS tix right after us.
Gotta say, this is lookin' like a sellout to me.
-
My friends and I already have our 3 tickets as well...my mother always told me that it's better to be safe than sorry!
-
Oh yeah, I bought Redsock a ticket!
The decemberists either sold out or got very close. So that means I definitely expect BSS to sell out. I dont know why they dont train one of the other morons to work the ticketmaster machine.
Its horrible spending over $100 on tickets and made to feel guilty for doing so.

As an FYI, the Decemberists show sold out while I was standing in line to get in before 10:00 -- the manager dude was truly befuddled at the sell out, you could tell.
I had a couple friends buy BSS tix last night too. I agree on the sell out possibility for this one.
-
I'm planning on going to this show too...assuming I can get a ticket in time. I think I'll stop by the Cat tonight.
Mark E, I still owe you something for that amazing DVD. Thanks again...

No problem at all.
Infact if there is anything else you want?
It would make me happy if you bought some of the albums you like from the bands at shows though..... Say when cinerama come back this year, I need to be seeing you spend a good $50 on theirs and the wedding present back-catologue. :)

Okay, so the Dears hit the bottom of grotty's SXSW list. Anyone else know anything about 'em?
-
I'll be at the show. Expect me to shout loudly when Stars play the first chords of Heart.

I just noticed that they were the first band for this show Bags! I'll be very interested to hear what you all think.
I found them barely tolerable. They seem to get a very strong reaction either way - love em or hate em. Someone on donewaiting.com gave them a very favorable review. And Pitchfork liked this record: calls it britpopish: no cities left (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/d/dears/no-cities-left.shtml)
But there were many people walking out of their gig that night. I only stayed because Lucero was next.
We deemed them "show-core". The singer would start off singing tunes that would not be out of place in a highschool musical then a punk-like eruption would occur - then it would be back to the showtunes. Other songs just seemed like indie wanking.
Everyone will probably love them...what do I know?!?!? :p

I'm a bad gauge, grotty. I tend to catch just those openers that have been specifically recommended or I want to see. I don't often see every band playing. So I was looking for a reason to get there in time to see the Dears.
Kurosawa, glad you'll be at this one, as I'm skipping the Fever tonight. What's your M.O. -- do you also always arrive for the first band, and do yo plan to stake out up front territory? I'm hitting this one it time for Stars, definitely. I heart Heart as well....(thanks again, Markie!)
-
I have a ticket, but I am considering skipping as I have a work event and neither the Stars or BSS albums excite me much.
-
as a virginia hick, i usually get so garsh darn excited to go into the big city that i get there for the first band. y'all
-
I love the Stars' "The Vanishing" -- so you won't be surprised that I also love BSS' "Pacific Theme..." I dig a little surfa-nova in my indie.
;)

how was this?

For those interested, Ticketmaster is saying the show is sold out as of now. Drat.
Oh well, I'd rather save my money to see Cursive anyway...
-
Ok I am getting to be a better judge of sold out shows......
Redsock, redroom. Pick a time....... 8.30? Or a little later, 9.00?
Doors to upstairs wont open till 8.30 anyhow, but it is a sold out show. Oh that ticket has now trebled in value......

Wow, if a person had extra tickets to this show, that'd be kinda cool. Wish I did.
Hey, if anyone wants to chat about Stars or BSS and their musical stylings, PM me.... :D

Does anyone know why my post on the tickets exchange saying I have 2 tix to sell would be removed?
-
This is the 9:30 chatboard; not the Black Cat chatboard.
The logistics of this one will make it easier to sell tickets outside the door than on a chatboard anyway.
Since it just today sold out, and the sellout is not listed on their website, there will probably be a host of people outside the door desperately looking for tickets. Easier to sell to them than to arrange to meet some yokel on a chatboard.

IMP shows only nowadays...... You will have no problems getting rid of them outside of the club tonight.
-
Ideally, I try to park on 14th, even if it means walking a few blocks. At least it's well lit. Where I park is usually determined by availability, more than location though. Parking sucks around The Cat.
If you're really worried about your car, park in Dupont and walk from there.
-
happened once to me, and once to a friend. both in the neighborhood behind the black cat.
and then took about 20 minutes of driving around to find a spot before the bsp show the other week.
-
that's interesting...OK...thanks!
-
oh...I just totally spaced and did not realize that this show was at the Cat and not 930...it's all the same to me til I get there...sorry 930 club...I would never had knowingly been so cheesy! (about this sort of thing, anyway)
-
I prefer the "no parking" sign in front of the club, though there's a new upside-down U-shaped rack just installed. Without fail, though, some idiot has parked in such a way that only one fits. There are also plenty of parking meters nearby.

Haven't heard them myself but I've read several descriptions that seem to indicate they are clearly influenced by The Smiths and sometimes come across as a more melancholy sounding Blur.
Maybe those comparisons are way off, but it has definitely piqued my interest. I'll make sure I'm there for the first band tonight...
-
Thoughts?
I missed the Dears.
I thought the Stars were very good. I was actually looking forward to the Stars more than BBS. Although, the lead singer looks like a cross between Bryan Adams and Chris Kattan...I found this to be distracting.
BSS were fantastic. The material was incredible live. I thought the album was great...but live was even better. Surprisingly, one of the better shows I have ever been to.
-
I guess you either get it or you dont...... I really hated BSS. I never new boredom could be intense.
-
I thought the Dears have a lot of potential. They obviously would list Radiohead among their influences, that's for sure...

I liked the Dears - especially that last tune with the long, noisy ending. I thought Stars were incredibly boring. I went downstairs after about 4 songs.
I liked BSS a lot though. I thought they definitely kicked things up a notch compared to "You Forgot It In People". All-in-all a great show.
-
missed the dears
stars were really good, i thought. i went to buy the cd (which i rarely do), but the girl in front of me got the last one. guess i wasn't the only one.
like bss alot. the less accessable stuff sounds better live. totally a get it or don't band.
one of the better shows i've been to recently. possibly because i was in a not so good mood and it really cheered me up.
-
First, let me say the lowlight/highlight of the night had to be smelling the Dears lead singer puking all over the toilet stall floor in the men's room as we were departing the Cat. His comment? "Oh man, I have food poisoning. I have to tell someone I just wrecked the bathroom." Priceless. I wonder how long the puke will remaim? Probably long enough so that even Mankie will get a sight of it.
Second, the music. Only saw a few songs of the Dears, but I give them a bigyawn. I thought the last song would never end, and sounded like an inferior Pink Floyd impression. Stars were pretty decent, though not outstanding. The singer's speaking voice was pretty annoying. He reminded me of a cross between the singer from Fountains of Wayne, the singer from New Order, Steve Buschemi. and a host of other nerdy twerps. We bailed before BSS. Need the beauty rest.

Christ, who wouldn't these days. I am so sick of reading about Radiohead in every single review -- even the alt.country or reggae bands somehow have a 'whisper of Radiohead' or Thom Yorke vocal stylings in 'em. Though Coldplay and Chris Martin are sneaking in and giving RH a run for its money.... ;)
I thought the show was amazingly up and down. I thought I was going to love the Stars, but I liked some songs, hated others. I was struck by the thought that this band should be on a John Hughes' movie soundtrack. You know, a la Spandau Ballet level, not the Smiths or Furs level.... The lead singer was driving me nuts; I did not dig his demeanor.
BSS was better as a live show, but still had real lows and highs. I really liked three songs, could completely do without about three, and the rest were fine. I preferred the Stars female singer during her stint with BSS, she was better utilized and sounded better. But come on; they had four guitars. Did anyone notice a fuller, more complex sound? Nah.
Fun to meet nkotb, loud talker (but a cutie and a nice guy, so who cares but markie...), and sparx and skeeter too! One of these days before a weekend show we should grab drinks beforehand...
Must have been a pukey night. We came out of the club to find a chick sitting on the back bumper of my car vomiting on the car behind it (I had total rock star parking RIGHT in front of the club...). Thank god mine was not the car behind!
-
I wonder if that was the girl I saw get carried out of the club before BSS came on. She looked totally unconscious when she was getting carried out.
-

I don't think it could have been. If she was that bad an hour and a half earlier, hard to imagine she'd still be there puking. Also, this girl was blowing chunks, but wasn't completely out of it...
-
I can say that this was one show where I felt very, very old.
I think maybe I should stick to the alt-country and Pernice Brothers.
-
Oh please, the crowd was not that young. I was actually rather impressed by the energy in the room; including the girl dancing like she was on acid next to us. Lulu was upset that she was clearly on something, as opposed to being sober and expressing her artistic side.
I for one, was very impressed with BSS. Clearly these are some talented folks. Perhaps 4 guitars was a little too much, but they were all so full of energy, and obviously quite happy to be there. I thought Stars were good too, and I was completely unaffected by the lead singer's whine. Oh well, to each his own... much happier to listen to BSS now that I've seen them live.
-
Did anyone notice how the ticket situation was outside? The was a guy in the Red Room trying to give a ticket away and finding no takers.
-

Some guy offered me $40 for a ticket as I walked in around 9pm. There was a small gaggle (10 or so) of folks trying to buy tickets.

But that is a crazy way to get rid of a ticket.....
I thought for a sold out show it was very quiet. My guess is that Stars and BSS do not entirely share a fanbase, despite sharing members

What would you say the average age was? I would say 20-25.

I had a friend who showed up needing a ticket, and he left after 20 minutes, but I don't think he tried hard enough. I went outside looking for him and asked all those kids, "hey, so are you all looking for tickets?" And not a one of them was; they were waiting to meet up with friends. Lot of folks just hanging around outside, though...
-
My wife saw a couple who looked like they needed the two extra tickets we had, so she approached them and asked. Sold them for $15 each (which was the day of show price anyway).
-
It's soweird how people's perceptions are so different despite having stood next to each other and witnessed the same things for three hours.
I think there were lots of folks in their 20's. But that shouldn't be surprising since BSS is one of the those bands suddenly becoming hip.
-
I didn't find the crowd inordinately young....And loved the flippy dancy girl with her arms all over the place. UNTIL she moved a little too close! ;)
Did any of you notice that she was there with two other girls, all three of whom were wearing black shirts with only one shoulder strap and sleeveless on the other?
-
I'd say it wasn't so much younger as a different crowd. Sightings include at least two pair of birkenstocks on men (!) and a whole host of conservative "it's a club, right?" sort of get-ups.

I wish I had sold my ticket, as I stood in line I debated getting rid of it several times. Instead I went in as Dears ended, was rather bored by Stars, and left before BSS. But it was nice to see those who I saw and to talk to Sparks again.

I had a spare ticket for some show at the 930 a little while ago and offered it (for free) to a couple of girls waiting in line for tickets...they wouldn't take it though. What's up with that? I'm not that scary looking am I?

I think folks get afraid that it may be a fake... as much as it sucks paying money for a fake ticket, it can suck just as much getting caught with one, no matter where you got it from. as in, plan on talking to the cops.

At the sold-out Joe Jackson show a while back someone taped a few tickets to the wall near the ticket window and put up a sign that said "FREE". I'm sure they went eventually, but they were up there for quite a while.

I remember that...unfortunately the tickets went up awfully late, so folks looking for tickets either got one or moved on, most likely.
I couldn't get rid of two tickets to the Mighty Wind for the life of me. Even though the shows sold out really fast. I think that was the kind of show that doesn't have an audience that would just 'try to scalp' without having a ticket.

I have a goatee because it suits me and I like it...I've had one since the days they weren't cool, then cool, then not, then cool again etc.....I had a full beard during my Falkland Islands stint and didn't like it one bit...my beard is red, (where it's not gray these days), so a full beard makes me look like an angry Scotsman.
When were indie dudes ever cool by the way?
-
Oh, and by the way...it was very cool to finally meet a few of you last night. Too bad it was as we were ready to head out the door. Next time the first round's on me.
-
What does Pitchfork say about full beards? They would be the source to turn to in figuring out whether they are cool or not.
-
this babe prefers the goats...full beards look kinda gross and too fatherly for a young guy (or my husband or mankie, ha ha)...OR they look too hippie-ish...I don't dig hippie guys

City indie dudes are cool. Obviously suburban indie dudes can't be cool, as the suburban part trumps the indie....

p-fork doesn't mention full beards, and while pop matters doesn't mention *full* beards in particular, it does mention beards...

Well, BigYawn has a goat, and his girlfriend would kill him if he tried to grow a beard... though I gotta say growing my hair out a little and having a full beard would be cool for a little while. Problem is, the beard would come in a little patchy. On other men, I think it just depends on what you look better with. Some guys look goofy clean-shaven, or with full beards. Individuality is the new hipster thing...

:D [/QB]
you have a point.....

i wanna be an individual...just like everyone else.
i look about 12 without my beard, which is right about the age when it starting growing. there are some scary pictures buried on my website of me in my "grizzly adams" phase. thankfully, i learned the art of the beard trimmer.

Exactly...some guys need a beard, other's can't find the testosterone to grow one. Do what you like...or what your woman likes.

City indie dudes are cool. Obviously suburban indie dudes can't be cool, as the suburban part trumps the indie....
:D
Except for nkotb, skeeter and sparx! (red, I don't count you; you don't live out far enough!) [/QB]
guess i'm not cool then... but i do happen to live in "suburb" designated as a historic site does that make me cool?

Hmm... seeing as how Manassas is a historic site, as is Fredricksburg, and they're both clearly on the *moon*...
-
We're moving down the road from JAXX. If that doesn't make up cool, I'm just giving up.
-
i lived in manassas for a year. it is not on the moon. clearly a different planet

Nothing in America is "historic" if you come from Europe!
;)
I'm like thatguy....I just don't look right as a grown man without some kind of facial hair....not that I look young, but clean shaven I look like the boy who never grew up or something...hard to explain really.

They do have a good speedway out there though.

I recently shaved off my goatee, and am working on growing my mullett. Hopevully people will now be able to separate me and Mankie.

well greenbelt certainly isn't on the other side of the moon, i can hear the roar of the beltway. and isn't greenbelt the orginial suburb :D (i know it's the proto planned community in US, an idea imported from the uk of course)

Same planner as columbia?
-
The guy who built Columbia was Ed Norton's great uncle or some sort of relation like that.
-
they way i understand it, the planners of reston and columbia all used the "green" communities as models. there were three of them all intiated by fdr as public works projects. greenbelt is the most famous of the three and has been studied by people all over the world. the orginial greenbelt houses are all designated as histronic buildings...

When mankie's there, they're histrionic buildings.... :D
-
There's a place called Milton Keynes just north of London...that place is also a planned community, unfortunately it was planend by British architects so you can imagine what an abortion it is....it does have a great outdoor concert venue though.."Milton Keynes Bowl" I saw Bowie with The (English) Beat and The Icicle Works both as support in 1982 or thereabouts. What a great day it was, and I fell in love with a nurse from London but never got her phone number...wonder what she's doing now...*ponders while rubbing chin*

So you're saying I'm a drama queen...ooh,ooh, can I be in your possie?
-
I wasn't too into The Dears. The singer's voice struck me the wrong way. I loved Stars, though! For me, the live setting brought out the full orchestrations and harmonies. And some of the tunes rocked out. I was only sorry they didn't sing Heart. Ah well. I look forward to seeing them again. I only stayed for a few songs of BSS. I was just so exhausted and couldn't manage being on my feet any longer.

My gay pals called themselves "fag" all day long.....oooooooh I get it, it's like the blacks and the "N" word, they can use it but we can't.

It is like that, which actually pisses me off, especially as I've gotten quite an earful on why 'faggot' is so offensive. I've been told it derives from the term faggot, a bundle of burning sticks, because they used to burn homosexuals....
But, as you said, they say it all the time...
-
Did anybody notice that the lead singer of Stars said "Washington Social Club is my favorite DC band since the Minutemen."
Since when were the Minutemen a DC band?

Actually bags, if I was gay I'd find "queer" much more offensive than "fag"...and fag is really only a US term..."poof" is probably the most common term in Britain.
-
Queer has become the political term of art, though, used by the gay community and activists. Queer art, queer rights, queer sensibilities. Blah blah.
If I were a gay man I'd want to be called "Nancy boy" :D

If I was gay you could call me what the hell you want. I've never been bothered by names, which is probably why I say some things that may seem insensitive to some folk....it's not on purpose. Except for Scouser..NEVER EVER CALL ME A SCOUSER!!!

At Black Cat, Broken Social Scene Is Beyond Repair
Saturday, March 27, 2004; Page C02
For a little-known band, Toronto's Broken Social Scene has lots of people who know about it. A youngish crowd filled a sold-out and smoky Black Cat on Thursday night to pay homage to this dreamo emo ensemble as it spent 90 minutes crooning and mooning through the atmospheric indie-pop of its new EP, "Bee Hives," and two earlier albums, "You Forgot It in People" and "Feel Good Lost."
Ninety minutes has never felt longer. Broken Social Scene is not a jam band, but it shares the tendencies of such bands for pretentious, self-indulgent playing and tiresome, feedback-driven sonic journeys. The results are almost cataclysmically boring.
At its core, the band is a six-piece -- three guitars, keyboard, bass and drums. Occasionally lead singer Kevin Drew would switch from keyboards to guitar as well, and rarely has an extra guitar been employed to such little additional benefit. Friends and musicians from the night's opening band, the Stars, joined in on some songs with horns, backing vocals and the mandatory emo show hand-clapping.
Even with the extra help, the band was only occasionally able to break free of its own dismal offerings to create anything that was particularly engaging. A notable exception was "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl," sung by the Stars singer Amy Millan, who repeated the snarling chorus, "Park that car / drop that phone / sleep on the floor / dream about me," with a startling ferocity. Such moments, however, were few and far between. This was mostly tedious art-rock that was neither arty enough nor rocked.

One of the BSS guys made fun of the Minutemen comment later in the show.
