Was I the only one who was extremely unimpressed with Bloc Party tonight? I thought every single song (minus maybe Bluest Light) was played entirely too fast live, and the lead singer just sounded horrible.
Oh, and then of course there was the DC crowd, who didn't move at all. I felt like I was watching Death Cab or something. Since when are kids too fucking cool to dance at a Bloc party show?
Most dissapointing show I've been to in a long time.
-
how did i know i would read this on here somewhere this morning...
-
i didn't see the show last night but based on seeing Bloc Party at the Black Cat and Merriweather, the band gets extra points from me for being able to strip away the studio gloss applied to their songs and have punky energy in concert. whats the point of doing something live exactly as it was recorde, especially seeing as the album is overly produced.
<tongue-in-check> guess the "real" bloc party fans got shutout this time around, because at black cat the audience was dancing, hooting and having a gay old time...
-
If the band was unimpressive, why blame the audience for the lack of dancing?

Bloc Party was great. Kele is an exceptional rock vocalist. He and the drummer are reasons why they are above the rest of the post-punk acts currently popping up. They do speed up their songs during their live act, but it just shows you they have a lot of energy which makes their performance more fun to watch. Unfortuantely, they are already attracting the douche-bag set that took Interpol two years to attract.
-
I was unimpressed to be honest. Maybe it was an off-night, and it wasn't that it was a bad performance...it was just lacking something that made the record so good. It seemed very sterile to me for some reason. I dunno. Maybe I was just tired from a long week (like many of the others). Sometimes I'll just go to check out a band and I don't have the desire to move around (or perhaps I just blew my wad at the Pixies show and wasn't feeling it). Now THAT was a great performance.
-
I thought Bloc Party was great last night and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance - more so than the album. There were a lot of uptight people there though. Some really sad, angry wannabe hipster tried to yell at me for "crowding him"...um, welcome to the world of sold-out shows, dude. I tried not to step on him too much during my dancing.
And what the hell is up with the constant picture-taking? Yeah, I think 10 pictures will suffice to show your little friends that you saw Bloc Party. Please stop now. Please. But all in all, despite the crowd, it was an enjoyable night.
-
Well, this douche bag had a great time last night. I'm a relatively new fan, but then I'm such a lemming that I can only like groups endorsed by the forum AFTER they're no longer cool. BTW: The people in my section at the upstairs bar were dancing their asses off - as well as we could in a packed crowd. SIGHHHHHHHH. Their style is NOT melodic a la Coldplay - they're much edgier - I heard influences from all over the road last night: Devo, the Jam, Echo and the B'men; some sonic Verve styling. They sound pretty unique to me. I loved the drummer and lead quitar...btw: What was hanging off the guitar when they returned for the encore? It sure looked funny from far away....I thought last night's crowd was unusually polite, well behaved and really digging on the music...but I guess it depended on the "neighborhood" in Douchbagland.
-
I thought the show was great...a lot of energy from the band, and at least parts of the crowd reciprocated. My first time seeing them and I was not dissapointed.
If you want to judge for yourself or relive the show, you can hear a streaming version of the concert on NPR's website. The show will be available as a free MP3 download in the near future. Now that's pretty cool.

Ditto.
For an "it band" show, I noticed remarkably little gabbing, picture taking, etc...
I thought the band was solid; 8.0 Z's. I wasn't disappointed at all.
-
does anyone remember the names of the two opening bands?

I thought the show was really great...i was pleasantly surprised...i wasn't sure what to expect but they did a good job. I even thought the crowd in my section (left in front of the stage) was tolerable too(douche bag free, short), and they were all boogying down.
What was hanging off the guitar when they returned for the encore? It sure looked funny from far away....

I was underwhelmed by Bloc Party. not saying they're bad - just not my cup of tea.
The openers were Automato (really f**king horrible rap. Made me want to ram knitting needles into my ears. We escaped downstairs. ugh.). Second opener was Engineer who I liked ALOT. They were my favorite band of the night. Some of the noisier bits went on a tad too long but overall some solid musicianship there.
The whole evening kinda had me wishing I had gone to Bettie Serveert at the Black Cat instead. Ah, well...
-
Shout-out to BadSushi for scoring me a ticket! I enjoyed the show a lot, though not as much as the Black Cat show. I agree that more people were dancing and generally moving more at the BC than last night. Also, a friend of mine who was at both last night and the BC show w/ me, managed to see them in Portland a week or two ago, and said that the crowd there was going absolutely bonkers. Much more so than at the BC! And here's the weird part, PORTLAND WASN'T SOLD OUT.
I too was at the front left, right next to the stage. I was the bloke in the absurdly colourful striped shirt. I was amazed at how short the people around me were, we literally had at least 4-5 girls that were shorter than 5 foot.
One last gripe, through...someone gave Kele a dollar to play Plans, which wasn't on the setlist. They played it, but it replaced "Into the Blue" a new song! And this show was recorded! And going onto mp3! Argh! Oh well, can't win 'em all.
-
I had a really good time... but I thought they started off kinda weakly. 'Like eating glass' is a fantastic song, but it sounded awful last night (I think they played it second). They hit their stride though around the fourth or fifth song and it was pretty great from then on. Was sad they didn't play Skeleton though. Was waiting for that one.
Anyone have the setlist?
-
Which bands are they "above"?

i agree with this. they're a good enough band with a group of great songs, it just sounded a bit phoned in to me. right around the 3rd song all i could think was "fuck, i should've gone to DC9"
i thought it was nowhere near as good as the black cat show.
and the bass player really shouldn't be singing.

If you're stepping on someone while you're dancing, YOU'RE the douchebag, not the person who is getting upset about it.

I'm beginning to think that all they hype can definitely hurt a new band (which bloc party still are, only got together in the autumn of '03). Since they've been hyped up to be the next greatest thing, I can see how people could come to a show like last night and be very much underwhelmed. When you bring high expectations w/ you to see a band or check out an album for the first time, it makes it harder to actually get into them. It'll be a disappointment almost every time. When I first heard Bloc party, it was the "Little Thoughts" single, months and months ago, I didn't think much of it. But the band grew on me and now I think they're brilliant.
-
"If you're stepping on someone while you're dancing, YOU'RE the douchebag, not the person who is getting upset about it."
That was a joke, actually. I wasn't within a foot of the dude, which apparently to him was unacceptably close. And I don't even smell bad, I swear! And this was after he spilled his beer all over my friend...oh well.
-
well unless Bloc Party is playing with someone else who I want to see, I'll be passing for time being... so the next time they play 9:30 club will the tickets be $20 or $25 dollars... and will it be another two years and several area shows before we see a new record...

ha, and i'd be comatose right about now.
actually, if it weren't for me having to drive some people home after the show, i would've considered swinging by to see what i could catch of dr. dog's set (apparently most/all of it)..oh well.

Don't have time to read the above posts except the first couple, or add much now, but I think it was a fun, solid show. I'm impressed with them. Was I blown away, no, but that happens less than some folks here believe....
Solid, though. And just about everyone behind me was dancing....in front of me it was more a head-bobbing crowd, but luckily they were fairly short as a group. But, overall, lots of folks around me really enjoying the show. It kind of warmed my heart to see kids/early 20-somethings enjoying themselves (and even dancing) the same way that I did when I was their age to bands like Siouxsie, The Alarm and Adam Ant...
-
i wasn't very impressed with the show either...the band was tight, kele sounded good, the scrawny drummer is pretty talented (i had to giggle that he played with his shirt off), BUT i just didn't feel it. somebody else called it already...the show felt "phoned in". i never really connected and didn't really see any of the energy that's captured on the album. stage presence was nonexistent.
i was also annoyed that they came on 25 minutes late. had they come on when they were scheduled, i coulda made it home for the end of the pistons/spurs game.
-
I tried to get into DC9 after the Bloc Party set, but they weren't letting anyone else upstairs. No luck on the double show.
-

yeah, because there was some real drama there. but darko did get a hoop, so that was sort of exciting.

when i checked the 9:30 site yesterday morning, it said 10pm...and by my watch it was 10:25 when they took stage. not trying to argue but i'm anal about getting to the show just in time for the headliner and missing openers that tend to bore me, especially on weeknights.
-
I saw B.P. in NY and it was one of the best shows I've attended.
I'm going to re-post my msg from another thread here, just b/c I'm that important. :p
At last night's Bloc Party show a friend and I were standing pretty close to the stage and everyone around us stood perfectly still (well, except for taking photos OC!) the entire time. It irritated me because I feel like that behavior belonged in the back or in the upper level of the club.
I say, let's keep the "stiffs" away from the front!
Also, I couldn't help contrasting the show with the LCD/MIA show (which was also sold-out). I stood in basically the same location, and everyone around me was moving around and having fun. People were actually INTERACTING with each other!! (My friend and I did note at the time that this behavior was unusual for DC.)

They probably just changed it later in the day. When I checked shortly after lunch, it definitely said 10:15. It's in the FAQ section too.

argh don't blame bloc party for chin-stroking scenesters; its not cool to enjoy yourself at a show anymore.
Bloc Party was amazing, i was on the barrier, w/ bassist Gordon Moakes a foot away from me. Sorry if I stepped on anyone, because i went out of my mind. They had great energy, and weren't concerned about trying to cultivate an image.
Set List:
So Here We Are
Like Eating Glass
Banquet
Positive Tension
She's Hearing Voices
Blue Light
Luno
This Modern Love
Little Thoughts
Helicopter
Plans (which was not on the original set list; fan in the front made a sign and paid Kele a buck to play it, displacing "Into the Blue," which I've never seen on any previous EP, so it was a new fucking song, which kind of makes me mad that they didn't play it)
Price of Gas
Compliments
Pioneers
I would've liked to see some more stuff from the EPs, like Staying Fat or the Marshalls are Dead, but it was a great show nevertheless.

i'm not mad at the "chin-stroking scenesters" or audience members who stand still. at certain shows, i may be mistaken for one. i rather grow annoyed at meathead interns or students (probably from gtown) who probably bought silent alarm at urban outfitters who butt in front of you just as the show begins, who bop around awkwardly during the show, and who every ten minutes send one of their group to retrieve more miller lite. sorry thats the snob-side of me speaking. i'm just glad i'm tall so i can move away.

yeah I don't really appreciate the dude who came up to me at Old 97s cause I wasn't bopping all around. Then he tried to give me a high five.

actually, they're probably from AU or GW ... georgetown has absolutely NO indie scene (apart from our alt-weekly mag)
-
Dance or don't dance. Just don't shout your conversation above the volume of the music if you're around other people who appear to be trying to listen to the show.
If you want to talk during the show, kindly remove yourself to the bar, or better yet, stay home and listen to the CD in the background.
And no, just because the song is quieter doesn't give you license to shout over it 'cause you're bored.
I know. I'm preaching to the choir on this board.
Anyway, thanks for all the great shows. Started with Live on the first night in the new address, and ended a long run last night. Wife and I are having our first kid soon, so it'll be a while before we're properly babysittered up for a show in all likelihood.
Hopefully by then they'll have a special "talkers" section. Should get one for the movie theater as well.
Thanks for the memories folks.

I couldn't agree more. I had the same problem. LCD show had me so happy, and the crowd at this show was just so damn annoying. Drunk chicks swinging their purses as if they'd never been in a crowd before, people shooting nasty looks if you applaud, dance a little, or shout out the simple "YEAH!" when your favorite song came on. What a bunch of a-holes. I had hopes for this show, but it looks like this is a band destined to be held hostage by its "fans".

well, it's been a couple years since i've been there ... maybe things have changed, i doubt it though ... AU and GW kids are much more likely to jump on the bandwagon of the latest emo/major-indie group

well I guess Emo wasnt really a trend when I was at AU, so I didnt notice, and how do all of the foreign students and kids from New Jersey fit in to the emo trend at AU? The only stereotype I knew about other schools while at AU was that Georgetown was full of unbearable snobs, and it has held pretty true :p

i thought we had already talked about this when your moniker was pollard!
there's a preponderance of foreign students and NJ kids at all three schools i mentioned, i'm mostly referring to people at these schools who are into music scenes
lots of folks at g'town loved "underground" frat-rock like dispatch and that "crazy game of poker" band, and i noticed a TON of emo kids at AU
maybe this has all changed in two years, i dunno.
and i noticed an intense hatred (jealousy?) of g'town from the other two schools, i was even told that "anti-gtown" cheers are taught at AU's frosh orientation ... i never noticed any real hatred of AU or GW from gtown folks

i dont think we discussed this, we may have skirted the issue
I did not go to orientation, so couldnt tell you
and the only reason that there was no hatred from gtown students was because they refused to acknowledge the lower castes
and really AU is just jealous obviously, I mean who the hell has heard of AU outside of the area

First off, the set times that the club lists are a proposed schedule, not an actual, enforceable timeline. It's a VERY helpful tool to help with some planning, but it is far from definitive. Band came on at 10:19 -- Eddie had said in the FAQ section that they'd probably come on at 10:15 anyway, so to me it was a tightly run show.

Absolutely...there's one song that sounds like it came from "Boys Don't Cry".

i was up in front, on the barrier right in front of Gordon. I received a setlist from him at the end of the show, which some girl nearly knocked me over for. I must say, this was one of my worst concert experiences. I got yelled at several times by 'girls' who swore i pushed their way in front of them. which was absolutely ridiculous -since I got there before them. on top of it, im only 5'1" so realistically, everyone can see over me. i did meet a guy from NPR who was pretty cool! i was most surprised the girls behind me yelled at kele to take his shirt off. they were even making cat-calls (thinking they were oh-so-funny) during the opening bands.
thought the engineers put on a great performance. while i wasnt impressed with their CD, live they sounded awesome. bloc party put on a much better show at the Black Cat. Felt some of the energy was just not there. had heard about their previous show in NYC which there were 2 encores, and apparently Kele and Matt did a bit of crowdsurfing. Guess that was a bit too much to hope for. And mostly, the crowd just didnt seem as into it as they were at the Black Cat. The front was quite dead.
and i must say, i have never felt so old. Everyone around me was under 21.
-
Aww yeah! heard some Bloc Party last night on the 4400! they were playing "banquet" at some crazy drunken frat party.
