Looking for some good suggestions. I'm partial to upbeat/anthemic indie and/or electronic (but not overly earnest rock anthemic a la U2). Some stuff that gets me all revved up lately:
upbeat The National
the upbeat songs from Bob Mould eponymous (Deep Karma Canyon, Egooveride et al)
LCD Soundsystem
Avalances
Deastro
-
Lindstrom - Where you go I go too
Pretty much the entire album.
-
This has been my favorite workout LP as of late:

-
soulwax nite versions album :)
-
It might be the geeky dancer in me but Beats Antique (http://www.beatsantique.com/) takes my mind off working out.
-
daft punk - alive 2007. for about 6 months, this was all that i listened to while running or at the gym... eventually burned out on it, but it was a great ride while it lasted.
been listening to a lot of deadmau5 recently. excellent stuff if you like epic, club-y electronica.
-
I'm going to give a shameless plug only because I hear it from many people who love to get amped up and worked out to our music :) It's electronic stuff...think Nine Inch Nails mixed with The Prodigy
Here's our myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/mindlessfaith)
MindCage
Mindless Faith (http://www.mindlessfaith.com)
Deep6 Productions (http://www.deep6.com)

picks from my ipod workout mix include:
cardio: death from above 1979, m.i.a., bloc party remixes, the faster hot chip tunes, yeah yeah yeahs (rich, y control, etc), n.e.r.d, q and not u, lots of mash-ups a la girl talk.
slower beats for cool downs and strength training: slower hot chip tunes, peter bjorn & john, tv on the radio, beck, etc.
plus i have a lot of one offs on my workout mix.
-
Tilly and the Wall - Bottom of Barrels album ;)
-
Bad Brains' "Riot Squad" over and over and over
-
What you listen to is going to be up to you and your tastes and your pace.
I run and don't do much else as far as cardio goes. If I put my entire IPod running mix up here I'd get ridiculed - I try to select songs that fit my pace. Some of them are artists/songs I like, some of them are artists/songs I wouldn't dare ever play aloud.
Here are songs that have been on my IPod running mix for a while. Forgive for lack of electronic music but I just don't find it great for running.
Ministry: What About Us
Ghostface Killah: Shakey Dog
Butthole Surfer's: Goofy's Concern
Murs: Barbershop
Digable Planets Pacifics
TV on the Radio: Wolf Like Me
Postal Service: Such Great Heights

only people who are not serious about working out have to pass the time with music. dedicate your mind to the task at hand.

I'd love to believe that, but as a guy who has run almost every day for ten years, I can't do it without music. Forget it. If my IPod dies mid-run, I don't care if I'm 10 miles from my house...I curl up into the fetal position on the sidewalk and cry. Then I peel myself up off the pavement and walk home. I love running but things would get boring every day without music. The only time I don't run with music is during races, in which your mind is occupied by the fear of running off course or running into other people. And most races ban IPods anyway.

running is NOT working out. running is running. walking is walking. riding a bike is riding a bike. the gym is working out. and music in the gym means you are bored.

My iPod Shuffle died about 13 seconds before I started the NYC Marathon last year. I was ready to chuck the fucking thing into the East River, but thankfully the excitement of the people on the street kept me going. But running my daily course without music? I can't do it.

I disagree. I'm not talking about running down the street to catch a bus, here. Any activity in which you are intentionally exercising your body for the sake of your health is "working out". Is there a difference between running on a treadmill in the gym and running on the street? Why shouldn't someone listen to music while working out? Of course it can be boring, but its necessary for many people if you want to remain healthy. That's what the IPod is for. A lot of boring things I do while listening to music. I swept out the garage yesterday, which was completely boring. I didn't feel I needed to "dedicate my mind to the task at hand" there either, so I listened to the IPod. What's the problem with that?

Slayer's Christ Illusion is a surprisingly catchy power-pop record and makes for a fine accompaniment to your favorite exercise routine. As is the entirety of Gallows' Orchestra of Wolves.
I also have a dedicated exercise playlist, which has the following as highlights:
Comets on Fire - Bee & Cracking Eff and Whiskey River
Muse - Hysteria, Stockholm, Supermassive, Plug-in Baby
Hives - Tick Tock Boom, Die Alright, Here We Go Again
half of Against Me's New Wave album
Dino Jr - Almost Waiting
Jay Reatard - My Shadow, Night of Broken Glass
Dicks - Hate the Police
Metallica - Trapped Under Ice, Creeping Death
Art Brut - Direct Hit
a bunch of Ministry stuff
For a change of pace, I often turn to a immense Britpop playlist, which offers a choice selection of upbeat numbers.

Riding a bike while listening to music is a recipe for death in my opinion....unless it's the stationary bike in the gym of course.

could agree more mankie - drives me mad seeing people around town or on trails oblivious to their surroundings - which is why you'll find brennser rocking to this every day...

Normally, I'd agree with you, particularly with the recent accident so fresh in mind. However, we in the nation's capital are blessed with Hains Point, a wonderful waterfront park featuring a 3-mile course that the adventurous cyclist can leverage for his or her own fitness needs. I myself take full advantage of this outdoor venue on many occasions throughout the week, as do many of my fellow enthusiasts.

I recently discovered that the new album by Girl Talk is great running music, and the most fun is trying to figure out all the different songs/artists you are hearing. Best part is you can pay what you want, including nothing at all. I paid exactly what I paid for the last Radiohead album. Get the album here (http://74.124.198.47/illegal-art.net/__girl__talk___feed__the__anima.ls___/).
