I'm not sure if this has been posted on here or not, but personally, I feel like this is a "why isn't this a bigger deal" kind of issue.
John McCain is completely computer illiterate:

CNN feature:

Isn't this a problem? Shouldn't the President of the United States of America at least have an INTEREST in learning how to use a computer, if not be completely computer literate?

This is kind of clever too:

I can't imagine any president having to pour their own coffee, tie their own shoes, or getting on the internetz.

computers are for the young, innovative, and relevant. mccain is for the useless, ancient, and almost off our planet.

Yes, you're right - Hillary Clinton is lacking the qualifications to be a secretary in 1956.
But John McCain is lacking the qualifications to be a secretary in 2008.

Does anybody think this isn't a big problem? I mean, clearly this lends itself to snark and bullshit....
But honestly - is it really okay for the President of the United States to be computer illiterate? No matter who that person is or who is running.

His computer skills are outstanding. He uses a Blackberry, Apple video conferencing to talk with his daughters while he's on the road, he blogs occasionally, and he's made revolutionary use of the Internet as a campaign tool.
He also stated in his most recent Rolling Stone interview:
How are you going to connect your support among young people to the governing process?
This is where the Internet is so powerful. One of the things that surprised me in this campaign is how well we were able to use technology to organize people. There's enormous promise ?? but we've just scratched the surface of what's possible when it comes to making government work for people. Virtual town-hall meetings, increasing transparency, accountability on legislation. You think about all the inefficiencies in government. We basically have a New Deal government in a 21st-century economy. We've got to upgrade it.
So you're consciously aware that this will have to be part of how you govern?
Yes, absolutely. The Internet gives young people a tool to be informed continuously. It gives them an opportunity to speak to each other and mobilize themselves. It gives them the opportunity to hold me accountable when I'm not following through on promises that I've made. It gives me a powerful ally if Congress is resistant to measures that need to be taken.

All I know is he has Wilco on his ipod, so he gets two votes from our household.

Not a joke in the least.
I'm not saying that Obama knowing how to use the internet or computers is reason to vote for him by itself.
I'm asking: shouldn't knowing how to use a computer and the internet be skills that we demand our President have at this point in history?

I think it's an important point. If you don't understand what the internet is and what it can do, then you can only have a foggy notion about how a lot of people are communicating these days, about how information can be spread globally in seconds, about how trade/copyright issues between nations will play out, how its changing the way people work and play. I don't need someone who can drop some ColdFusion science on my ass, but we've had a president who demonstrates a mind-boggling lack of curiousity about things, and we've seen how that's paid off.
Again, if you honestly think there's no difference between McCain and Obama, you're stunningly ignorant, no two ways about it.

So if being internet savvy is the be all for a president, shouldn't we just write in Al Gore and move on?? He invented it.... ;)

Are they singularly at the head of the country? Nothing you've posted so far even correlates. Good to see they let the best of the best of the best serve at customs and boarder patrol.

The point is a) you don't know how old he or she might be, and b) that the impact of the Bush fiscal policy has much more direct, dire implications for people who are on the cusp of retirement than it does for those people who are recently out of college, and finally, c) that it might be worthwhile to think how things might impact somebody other than yourself.

we're living in an INFORMATION economy. billions are being generated because of the internet. damn straight i expect my leaders to have a vague understanding of how information flows.
this is a huge indictment of mccain. then again, lack of knowledge and general cluelessness wasn't an impediment to bush being elected, and i'll readily admit that mccain is more on the ball than hee-haw.

do people still vote based solely on the political party? dem. or rep. forever, no matter who it is? i have a friend who has always been dem., since jimmy peanut carter, and now believes that the dems. (in congress/house) do not represent what america really stands for, so he will vote for mccain even though he hates him on alot of things. and yes, dmx was right. no matter who is in there, "they gonna do what they gonna do." no one can change america. money and the illusion of power that has come from our wars, imports/exports, "invisible" class systems, television, violent music/games/movies has corrupted us into a chaotic something bad about to burst and happen. the dollar value is the first sign. the foreclosure market is the next. i would hate to live in the city when the people ignite.

(CNN) ?? For the second time in two days, John McCain has referred to current events in ??Czechoslovakia? ?? a country that officially ceased to exist in January of 1993.
??And I regret some of the recent behavior Russia that has exhibited, and I??ll be glad to talk about that later on including reduction in oil supplies to Czechoslovakia after they agreed with us on a missile defense system, etcetera,? said the presumptive Republican nominee at a New Mexico town hall Tuesday.
More than fifteen years ago, Czechoslovakia officially split into two nations ?? the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
On Monday, the Arizona senator made virtually the same statement about recent Russian moves that troubled him, citing that country??s attempt to reduce ??the energy supplies to Czechoslovakia.?
Later that evening, McCain??s campaign sent reporters a statement on the issue, which quoted the Arizona senator calling the nation ??the Czech Republic? twice.

This is what all the fascist monkeys like to shriek and throw feces about. At the end of a long campaign day, after numerous events, Obama inadvertently said he was going to visit all 57 states in the U.S. Meanwhile, John McCain doesn't know the difference between the warring factions in Iraq, and after taking a stroll with a huge armored military guard, says that Iraq is safe for citizens to go shopping. Oh yeah, and he also is now for the tax cuts that he used to be against, which will just blow the deficit even bigger than even Bush could manage.
But yeah, the 57 states.
-
maybe he wants to visit
DC
Puerto Rico
U.S. Virgin Islands
American Samoa
Guam
Northern Mariana Islands
And I suspect he's off to some of the Minor Outlying Islands in order to find a place to send Bush and Chaney to after the election.

he said (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/05/barack-obama-wa.html) he'd visited 57 states, but was not allowed to visit alaska or hawaii.

Well, if he counts the UK as the newest member of the union, which you may as well, there's England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland, which is 4 more states. So he's getting close...

maybe he could visit McCain's homeland, the Panama Canal Zone, and determine whether McCain is a "natural-born citizen of the United States" as Article 2 of the Constitution requires of a President

my list was a joke implying he confused territories with state, except for the part where he off to find an island on where to exile bush and chaney i'm dead serious on that issue. or maybe the french can take of the matter for us..

this explanation made me lol..who are you his mother?
