So they are playing in Charlottesville in August. I wonder how much tickets will be for this. It's an ok venue so should be a pretty good show.
-
ho hum...
-
I was waiting for this thread!!!!!!
I'm going.
-
I remember seeing the Smashing Pumkins way back in 1972 in a club in NJ...of course then they were known as soon-to-be discovered superstar Bruce Springsteen. Greatest show I've ever seen to this day. Back then they had a negro sax player who stood at least 7 1/2 feet tall. Man could that guy blow.

I would estimate around $45 based on other shows on the tour. The rest of the tour is seated, but Charlottesville is GA.

Your sense of optimism is enchanting.

Two things...
1) the show IS confirmed as GA.
2) The presale is going on NOW.
2a) Yes I do know the password!

Let me know if that works for you or not.

Worked for me and a friend I IMed it to. Definitely not a single use thing.

Good deal. I am glad I could help ya out. BTW you can sign up for their email list and you get advanced sales opportunities for damn near everything.

I got 5. Road trip. The best part, no ticketmaster.

Starr Hill Brewery seems cool. Is it? What else is around?
Is it necessary to buy a parking ticket?
-
Starr Hill is closed. It was a cool venue for shows but closed awhile ago. The pavillion is ok to see shows. I don't think this will sell out. Not many shows sell out there.

Starr Hill used to have shows, now they don't. It's still an OK hangout for cville.
You're either going to pay $7 to park when you get there or you can pay in advance. In theory you can find street parking, but that's never worked for me.

Totally? Wasn't there a while when it was closed as a venue but still a brewery?
-
Well yeah the brewery is still there but no one cared about that haha. The venue was where everyone cared about. I'm talking about the venue.
-
I think the brewery is out of town a little ways too so its not in the same building as the venue. The venue was suppose to have a chicken wing place open up there but that never happened. So it's just sitting there now.
-

Oh, ok, I knew that.
-
I saw the secret machines (among others) at star hill. it was a great show.
-
Hmm. So what is there to do that is near by the pavilion? Can you tailgate anywhere?
-
As far as parking goes. The place where you will end up parking is the deck (water street I think). I THINK you save a buck or two by pre-purchase of a ticket to park. At the very least you will have a place at the lot even if it is 'full' as they hold sports for the prepays.
As an FYI, just up from Starr Hill (right at UVA corner) is the satellite ballroom. Small place but they have some decent shows on occasion.
-
Well the pavillion is on the downtown mall. There is a bunch of bars that are on the mall. Most famous is Millers where Dave Mathews use to bartend. Not so sure for tailgating because I've never seen people do that for shows there. They are just pick a bar thats on the mall. Plenty of places to drink at.

Satellite Ballroom closed down a few months ago. Everything in this shit ass town has been closing down. Only music venue here now is the pavillion and gravity lounge.
-
Parking can be free if you get there early enough and find an open metered spot. Other then that there is plenty of parking around you just have to pay.
-
The pavilion is at the end of a road in the heart of the city that has been permanently closed off and made into a walk way. Lots of little shops for several blocks, many outdoor cafe's etc. Mind you C'ville is a tad, hmmm, different of a town shall I say. After all it is the home of "Mister Jefferson's" university. There is a slight air of hoity toidy there but not in an arrogant sort of way, it just is. I'm sure you will have a good time. Not sure if they have an 'official' time that let you start queuing up or not. But anyway if you do park in the deck, come out of the deck go to your right, cross the street and go a block or two until you are the street described above. The pavilion is at the far end of the street to your right. AFAIK that is the only enterance.
-
Is the Paramount Theater closed as well?
-
Nope that is acutually open.
-
yeah they used to have a cool ticket system where you could select specific seats on line. Not sure how long ago that changed but looks like thats not how it works any more.

The tour started last night. Billy says they are going to play the same set each night. Very lame... But, at least it is a good set.

* Speed Kills
* Transformer

He later said he was joking and they'd switch it up. We'll see tonite.

i wonder if set the controls is one of those pointless jamm-y lengthy "covers" that corgan seems to like to do.. blech.
-
So is it the same setlist every night?
-
Originally posted by wml7:

They've got alternate songs written on the setlists (Gossamer, That's The Way, Pox) but it does appear it's going to be 95% the same setlist every night, if any variation at all.
-
Nice.
-
I hope Gossamer is better than the version at the club last year. I hear their Pink Floyd cover is nearly 20 minutes... Not sure if I even have a preference.

I haven't heard the Floyd cover, but I'll wager it's awful. I know for a fact Gossamer is.

surprised that we agree on this.
with the butchering job that corgan did to transmission, i don't think i want to hear set the controls (not a huge fan of that song anyway).
in the future, no one under any circumstances should be allowed to play or perform the song 'rock on'. it's always been terrible whether it was the 70s, 80s or 90s.
-
very surprised that 1979 isn't in the set.
-
Will there be an opener for their shows???

good God this means that this show will be over by 9pm. odd

Do you really think they will go on at 7pm? It would be nice if they played longer, but that's doubtful.

any chance that 7:00 is doors, and show starts 8:00 or 8:30?
-
no it says doors at 6 show at 7

I hope they start a bit later or I'm going to be cutting it close, but it does state in several places doors @ 6, show @ 7. Over by 9:15 if that's the case.
-
yeah i think the downtown mall has a noise ordinance thing. So all the shows start like that.

The light show is going to be awful since virtually the entire show will take place during daylight.

Just back from the show. I don't know it was a good show but they didn't play as much of their stuff as my friend and I thought they would. I've got a shit load of videos so I'll have to go through to see how and what they played.
-
Holy shit I looked at the setlist and its the same thing they played lol from before.
-
I had a good time. I thought it was wonderful up until heavy metal machine... then I realized I had waay to much to drink and sat in the back with the sad kids. Set the Controls was annoying and about 20 minutes too long, as expected. Oh well, it's not like the are going to come out and play Siamese Dream from start to finish. What were you expecting? It was a nice mix of everything. Eye sounded really grat.
-
At the Raleigh show last night, they played the same set again, but Billy came out topless for the encore and had his shirt around his neck like a scarf. I was in the front row, and when he sauntered by at the end, I ripped off my shirt and offered him a trade. He looked at me disgustingly and shook his head no with his mouth agape.
Probably didn't help I was wearing a Zwan shirt.

I was trying to trade a cruddy shirt for a better shirt. Pulling one's self up by their fashionable bootstraps is what Julian's America is all about.
-
That's great. Was he able to see that it was a Zwan shirt? Dave Grohl traded shirts with a guy at the 930 show a while back. I don't think he put it on, he didn't want to get ring worm.

Uncertain on what he make out of the shirt, but I was 5 feet from him all concert wearing it, so I'm betting he knew.
RatBastard is who pulled off the Grohl trade. It was my inspiration for trying.

is anyone going to either tuesday or wednesday show that can get me a ticket on saturday (i'll be in chicago for the mbv show that day and don't know what my computer status will be). i'd prefer it be someone i already know .. since you know my ticket would be with you. and uhh, yeah, it would make the money transaction go smoother :)
-
I got mine thru the presale. It's starting to seem like the Pumpkins are a house band. They are here all the time now. I wonder what the '20th Anniversary' shows will be. At one point I think I heard they would play entire albums each night, but I dunno.

Me either. It looks like they will do it in other cities, but those cities don't have anything on sale yet. I wonder if this is a flub for DC, or if we don't get the option. I guess I'll find out on Saturday.
-
I got ORCH Row G Seat 12. Not too bad. The seats my friend got thru the presale for night 2 are a lot worse, but I'm the only one crazy enough to go both nights. I guess there is no 2 day pass for dc?
-
ORCH Row O one night, ORCH Row Q the other. Aisle seats both times. Not great seats, but the sound is usually better in the middle of the floor, so it should be good.
-
What's the view like from the boxes at DAR? Seems like it would be blocked.
-
ORCH Row L, left side for Tuesday
ORCH Row Q, right/center for Wednesday
I had ORCH Row B for Tuesday but it gave away my tickets because I was looking for both shows simultaneously. Bonehead move by me.
Either way, I'm excited to be there. Hopefully Billy goes deep into the catalog for these shows.

Billy's kinda screwed if he does, screwed if he doesn't. If he plays a 2007 greatest hits set, hardcore fans will complain the show is a retread. If he does a 2008 set with deep cuts, 80% of the people will complain he's being indulgent.
Songs I want to hear on this tour we haven't heard since reformation: Tristessa, Snail, Jellybelly, Porcelina, Thru The Eyes Of Ruby, Soma, Geek USA, Luna, Bodies, For Martha, Cherry.

Obviously depends which box you have, but the ones in the front half of the building are a really good view, in my experience. I would've loved box seats.

I couldn't buy tickets today because I need to put plans together first but I checked earlier to see what was best available, and it was box 29, closer to the back than the front. I searched again for tier seats and found some that were pretty good, so I'm not sure which I would pick.
It's a nonissue though, cuz at the rate this is coming along, there will only be crap seats left by the time I know how many tickets need to be bought.

$60 for this? Who do they think they are? Brian Wilson???
-
if anyone has an extra or ends up with an extra in the decent seats .. plz let me know. i was out of town during all this.
love you kids :)

reading this thread makes me really long for when my favourite band breaks up, loses half its members, then comes back 5 years later and continues to tour incessantly for years on end.
because right now they only tour once every 4 fucking years.
-
"Now, it's bad enough to subject your audience to about 40 minutes of abrasive, deliberately off-putting music, but it's even more uncool to come back for an encore that mocks them for not being 100% with you, and feeling disappointed for not hearing more of what they expected to hear from a show billed as a 20th anniversary concert. In conventional show biz logic, if you're going to go that far, you should at least leave the audience with a crowd-pleaser. In Billy Corgan logic, you come out and perform one of the lesser songs from your best-selling album, and then finish off with a song that mixes disingenuous hippy-dippy "everyone is beautiful!" lyrics with improvised sarcastic rants that outright diss the city you're playing in, mock the fans for paying to see your band, and tell your visibly disappointed audience that you'll see them in hell. It was full-on douche-tastic passive-aggression. It's as if he set out to do this heel turn, and purposefully alienate as much of the audience as possible. Well, it worked. Believe me, unless you've witnessed other shows on this tour, it's unlikely you've seen a more defeated audience exit from a rock show." -Fluxblog, (NYC show, night one)
-
Night One doesn't look as good as night two set list wise. With that in mind, I plan on going tomorrow night. By the way, if anyone has a spare box seat ticket or orchestra seat ticket for Wednesday night's show, let me know! I'm willing to pay face value and fees.
-
I 'sat' thru 'Set the Controls' in Charlottesville. Maybe it will be more tolerable now that I know what to think. There he is... Billy Corgan is wearing me down again.
-
So, like, is Billy trying to run his band into the ground?
-
The band? No. He's certainly willing to challenge his audience, however, and perhaps deservedly so. Lousy audience at the DAR tonight. A lot of people there who obviously hadn't been to a concert in years or who were there just because their S.O. likes the Pumpkins. Anyway, I had a good time. I agree that night #2 probably has the better of the two set lists, but there were plenty of highlights in tonight's show, such as "Siva", "Tonight, Tonight", "United States", "Today", "Bullets with Butterfly Wings", and especially "The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning", which is a personal favorite that I hadn't heard live before. I loved every minute of "United States". I still think that song kicks ass. I thought "Set the Controls" was kind of cool in an experimental way. Jimmy Chamberlin is better than ever. I like the way he uses cymbals sparingly, and he thumps those snares with conviction.
-
I agree that there were some highlights like the ones you mentioned, but the last 40 min or so just ruined it for me. I hate the long drawn out pointless Heavy Metal Machine, and the Pink Floyd cover was interesting but way too long to sustain the interest in my opinion.
Then, after that to end with a really pointless encore segment.
-

I think the issue it seems people are having with these gigs is that so many fans are going for nostalgia reasons which is perfectly understandable, but everyone should also be going because they love the music and want to hear whatever Corgan has to offer.
I watched the trailers to the DVD that is coming out soon (Thanks Ed for posting that link) and Billy even said that he reunited the band for the sake of art, which is probably why he's jamming things out a bit. He's doing that for fun and to test the audience. I think a lot of fans have become too comfortable with the whole concept and sound of what the Pumpkins are suppose to be. this also explains the resentment some fans have with James and D'arcy being replaced. I'll admit I can be like that at times, because for years all I had was their cds and music videos, but essentially the Pumpkins as a band is Billy Corgan's band much like how the Cure is Robert Smith's band.
When I saw the pumpkins back in 2007 at Virgin Festival, I only had two expectations which was to hear "Tonight, Tonight" and "Today" aside from that I had no expectations. I think because of that, the concert didn't feel nostalgic. Not to mention, I was holding the attitude of "finally I am seeing one of my favorite bands." I never thought it was a blast from the past just because the band was suddenly active again. Though I don't listen to the Pumpkins religiously, I do listen to them a lot. They are a part of my past as much as my current life. Their older albums still sound current and not outdated. I still get excited about the idea of new material even if it's stuff that I might not be crazy about.
On a side note, I'm a die-hard STP fan and Oddly enough, seeing them at V-fest this year totally felt like a blast from the past. This was weird to me especially since I've seen them live before back in 2000. I get the feeling the reason it felt like a blast from the past is because I hadn't listen to them on a good basis since 2002 or 2003. Go figure?!
A similar case study to the Pumpkins in my mind would either be Depeche Mode or Nine Inch Nails. Two bands who have fallen off the face of the earth at times and have come back and have been rather active lately. Though they have to please their fans by playing (some) hits, both seem to throw other things in their sets to shake things up a bit. And if you're a pretty good fan of either, you're a good sport about the whole thing even songs that you aren't crazy about from their recent albums.
Needless to say, it'll be interesting to see how the crowd is for Wednesday night's show. I'm quite excited!
ps- How was Eye live??? I was wondering about that. Eye and The End is the Beginning were the two songs I've never heard live from tonight's set. If I was super wealthy and not busy with school work, those two songs would've been the reason I'd come out. (well those songs and Today and the other hits they played tonight...)
-
For me it is not an issue of wanting the nostalgia or for them to play the hits, I just want good music. I've seen the Pumpkins many times starting in 1992. I've seen them play most every song in their catalog already and don't have expectations on what I have to hear anymore when I go into a show.
I'm happy to hear them play new stuff if it is good, but the wankery tonight was just way too much. And that's coming from someone who usually loves their wankery.
Both Eye and The End... were really good. My highlight might have been Siva, which is commonly played, but had really long jam in it which was focused and went somewhere, unlike the whole last segment of the show.
-
Oh I wasn't saying you in particular. I meant the casual fans and all the people who have asked me why on earth am I going to see the Pumpkins. One guy was like "you're just going to ruin your childhood memories of that band..." How awful right?
Anyhow...I understand what you mean about being peeved by 20 minutes of jamming in a song that seems to go nowhere or has no real purpose. (A good jam session has some sort of focus like you mentioned with the one song they did tonight)
Wanking off is wanking off no matter who you are as a musician. Hell last year when I saw Ryan Adams (which was a great show for the most part) I got mad at him and his band for just doing this pointless jamming for like 20 minutes. He could've played more songs or something during that time. I just remember sitting there thinking "Okay this sounds cool, but finish the damn song already!"
By the way, I'm quite jealous that you've seen them so many times throughout the years. And I'm glad to hear that Eye and The End were good live. I'm excited to hear how "Ava Adore" is going to translate live with all the electronics and stuff.

Pretty accurate review, Darth Ed. The audience was definitely lame and full of significant others dragged out to the show. I was honestly expecting to see a crowd full of hardcore fans like in Asheville; instead, everyone around me (7th row left side) sat for half the show and only got excited for the hits. I'm glad they got to enjoy what they came for, but it just wasn't the type of audience I anticipated.
Corgan's passive-aggressiveness is unrivaled. Just before "Today" when he asked everyone to keep relaxing in their seats was classic Billy. He seemed to open up more toward the end of the evening; "Everything is Beautiful" was actually enjoyable and not a stab at the audience like in NYC.
My highlights were "Transformer" into "Superchrist" into "United States." (Wow!) and the extended "Heavy Metal Machine" with a Rush medley.

The band?

I agree with what people said about the crowd being lame. Thing is, though, I think Billy really brings that out in people.
I saw every Pumpkins tour from 1992 to 2000, most of them several times, and the crowds were always awful. I have the utmost respect for Billy as a musician, but he obviously an ass of a person, and that follows him around and gets reflected back to him.
It was very interesting to contrast the crowd last night with the crowd the night before at DAR for Kings of Leon. I'm not comparing the bands at all and I have way more respect for the Pumpkins, but KOL came off as very humble, knew how to energize a crowd, and seemed very bowled over by how much the crowd was giving back to them.
I don't think that all these people at the Pumpkins show that seemed bored were going just for the hits. I'm sure most of these people would have been excited for any good song picks from the great Pumpkins records, more things like Mayonnaise, which got a good crowd response. At the KOL show, many of the deep album tracks got as big of a reaction as the hits, I'm sure the Pumpkins crowd is not that different in that people are going to know the main records.
-
I definitely dug the Rush medley. They could have been fine with just Tom Sawyer but nope, Jimmy had take it up a notch with the little YYZ action! awesome!
Was excited with "Drown" "The Beginning is the End.." and "Siva" Even the goofing fun of "Geek USA" was nice, but damn wish they would have rocked it out or "Silverfuck" "Cherub Rock" or "I Am One" (I'm sure those last two will be played tonight)
I think I realize why I don't like shows at DAR, people just don't get into the shows. They sit in their seat or they just stand there. One guy kept yelling at anyone blocking his view, and even yelled at an usher for standing at her post because he wanted to sit in his seat and watch. Funny...he even got kinda mad when people finally got to the seats in front of him so he couldn't put his legs up. Jackass.
Definitely could have been about 10db louder I thought...

Again, you should have seen the crowd for Kings of Leon. That was probably the most energy I've ever seen in DAR, or tied with Arcade Fire. The whole place was on its feet the whole time, even the upper sections. It is possible to get that in DAR, it's just that the band needs to bring it.

What is so wrong with wanting to sit or stand and simply enjoy the music? It's an artistic performance, not a football game.

my highlight of the show was the guy about five or seven seats from me in right row o. towards the end of the evening, when billy banged on the big drums, he obviously became enraged with the show and began screaming interesting comments/reviews such as "nice animal music, faggot," and "no homos", "you suck, you suck," plus "i used to think you were good, but now you suck."
and i saw thatguy and mad gypsy doing security, plus the two guys at the 930 table, but i don't know who they are.

There's a difference between sitting down to enjoy the music, which I find nice once in a while (Eddie Vedder show, for example), and being absolutely disinterested in the show. The people in my section complained about not knowing any of the songs and turned to me to say, "What the fuck is this one?! C'mon, Billy!"
It was more about the lack of energy and enthusiasm from the crowd than the fact that they were sitting. I see how "Set the Controls" or "Speed Kills" or the acoustic set can be offputting for a casual fan, but how do you complain about "Eye" or "United States"?

Who else heard the guy screaming "BILLY, WE CAME FROM DALLAS, TEXAS!!!" all night?

Exactly. People weren't into the show that were fans, just "I like the hits I've heard on the radio" types. If you are Pumpkins fan, then you know that the little jams they do in the middle of songs or extending out them is part of what they do. Just like other 90s bands, like Pearl Jam.
I sure out of all the people saying the show sucked they wanted their setlist to be

I think Josh kinda stuck out just a bit 3 rows deep on the left side all night with people being afraid to be around him. I didn't see that guy with the goatee behind though...

Me, I was very close to that dude, very funny. At least he would wait until inbetween songs. There was another dude in the vicinity who for much of the show was screaming his head off during the music. Maybe he stopped eventually because he got bored like everyone else.

The big problem for me with the Tuesday setlist -- and the reason I'm only going tonite -- is its the exact same setlist as the August tour, except with a different cover to close. And that tour was advertised as "a once in a lifetime setlist." Not so much. I didn't want to see that set for the 4th time.
-
I had a good time last night, I was tired so I was one of the guys who didnt stand up the whole night but that doesnt mean that I didnt appreciate it, for me it was more like a "Billy Corgan Experience" show than a Smashing Pumpkins one though...
-
Not claiming to be a huge Pumpkin fan, but am I the only one who thought the sound mix at Tuesday's show was aweful? The bass, and the kick drum were so freakin overdone. I felt like I was locked in the trunk of a hiphop blaster with broken woofers. Was it a consequence of where I sat, in the box section, middle arena? DAR doesn't have great acoustics, probably tricky to get it right, but what was TOBY the birthday boy mixer doing back there? Any one else think the mix was aweful?

dar may sound bad, but that complaint about not the fault of dar. SP live in 2007 sounded like nothing but a rumbling mess of drums and bass.
-
My only complaint about the sound was that it needed to be louder. I thought the mix was very clean and perhaps a little thin on the low-end, and i was sitting in a box about two sections back from the stage on the left.
if you saw the "Fuck Art, Let's Kill" shirt that would have been me ;) hehe

this show was a cringe-worthy train wreck. i was a huge fan of the pumpkins in the early/mid 90s, but my level of respect for the band and billy corgan has now dropped off completely.
strangely enough, i was never a big fan of nine inch nails (another early 90's band mentioned here) but my level of appreciation and respect for trent reznor and that band continues to grow every year. now there's a guy who puts on a real show (one of the best in the business) and seems truly gracious, appreciative and respectful of his audience and fan base.
i'm done with the pumpkins.

I totally disagree with this. I'm a huge Pumpkins fan and know what they do, what endeared me to the band so much is the jams they put in their songs live in the middle and extending them out. I think that stuff is what makes them one of the better live bands around.
That stuff last night was a different animal, though, and it just really crossed a line. It wasn't about adding cool new takes on existing songs or extending things out a bit. It was utter wankery.

I've got no complaints about night 2. Great show.

did billy come out in any strange get ups like night one?
i wore my dark star shirt with a pea coat, but nobody seem to get the joke.

This might be among the first of the new tunes that gives me some faith that the new band can do some interesting things beyond rock and wanking solos:

I am with you on that. The set list was pretty great. I just wish that they had a different song closing the show. Aside from that, I had a great time. I really loved how they had a horn section and a violinist. Not to mention, that little latin drum breakdown they had in the show was awesome.

Billy came out wearing some weird stuff. Best moment was when he threw this glitter out into the crowd. Either that or when he was dancing on stage. Julian and I were joking that Billy was an inch close to bringing sexy back.

I thought his dancing reminded me of a slightly more rhythmic Peter Garrett. :)
Both shows were great in their own respects. One should not compare the two since they were meant to stand alone.
The first night "rawked" way more than the second. What a -Rush- in Heavy Metal Machine!
Best 2nd night segment was the to-fer slow jams of Landslide and Disarm. I came up front to tape it and was moist for the rest of the night.
Ahhhh...

The first show was far superior. I liked the song choice better, although Show 2 had Soma and Bodies. The backing tracks were a little annoying, when he had a NINE piece band. I actually enjoyed set the controls as well.
