FYI, the pre-sale has started at the band's website for the March 23 show at Bender Arena.

Saw Snow Patrol, OK Go and Silversun Pickups last night at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
I was worried about the big venue (capacity 7,000) swallowing Snow Patrol up, but they suprisingly sounded worthy of such a big venue.
Silversun Pickups started the show and I'm giving you all a heads up - if you were going to the show to mostly see them, don't. They started early so I missed the first few songs (tix and web site said 8, we got there at 7:55 and they were 2-3 songs into their set) so get there early. They were met with genuine disinterest from the scores of teenie girls who were at the show, and in such a large venue it made it impossible to connect with them. They played most of their debut - some good some bad. Little Lover So Polite sounded good, Future Foe Scenarios started like a train wreck but finished well, and of course Lazy Eye was great. All in all a disappointment, but probably not their fault. I'm looking forward to seeing them in a smaller venue.
OK Go sounded terrible. At first I thought it was just because the venue was too big, but the truth is after hearing Snow Patrol, the venue was too big for them. They seemed to be having fun and were entertaining at times, but for the most part I found them bland. They need treadmills and silly dance tricks to be really entertaining, or maybe just a smaller venue. The jury is still out.
Snow Patrol were much more polished then the first time I saw them, and while this hurts their intimate numbers, it works for the rest - especially most of the first album. They played a long set (seemed like they played everything) and then a three song encore, but not once did I feel like they're dragging this out. The set list was pretty close to other set lists I've seen and it was pretty enjoyable show. They are what they are, and if you go to see them for some earth shaking, it's not going to happen. But if you want to be entertained, few things are as easily entertaining as cheesey brit pop. Gary still maintains a great stage presence (although you should brush up on your N. Irish/Scottish) and does his silly spastic movements that the girls love. He definitely entertains the teenie girls. I won't ruin all the surprises, but Betty, this is your big chance. Learn all the lyrics to Set the Fire to the Third Bar and stand in the front. Be sure to tell Gary you can sing! The lighting was simple but did it's job of not making them look small on such a big stage. A nice ending to a show that was otherwise disappointing after the first two bands.

(Not from last night's show, but seems close enough)

smackie: thanks for that review, very helpful and insightful. much appreciated. hopefully the pickups and OKGO will get their acts together(!) as the tour progresses and will both be in better shape by the time they hit DC. i totally agree with your non-earth-shattering, "they are what they are, AKA cheesy brit pop" comment - i believe that's exactly what i wrote about them last time they played at the 930.
gotta admit, i really like having an insider/spy on the west coast giving us previews of upcoming shows :)
-
I don't know if it's getting their act together so much as it's (1) the crowd for SSPU and (2) the large venue for OK Go. I was in the seats for OK Go - it likely sounded better on the floor. But Snow Patrol certainly sounded fine in the seats.
And the feeling is mutual - I still get a lot of show info from this board which is why, despite moving away, I'm still a regular.

The Bill Graham Civic is one of the worst venues I've been to. Unfortunately, I'll be attending Muse there in April, so I have no choice :/
-
muse in april, arcade fire at the greek in june... which coast do you live on, dude?!? :)
-
I love the Bay Area :) And I still have a home there...want to go to SF after Coachella??! haha!

Smackie - no post punk progression during their encore? its a hard song to miss, as it doesnt sound like any of their other stuff. starts the song off with a siren blaring.
as far as being surprised about them playing to a 7,000 capacity auditorium? They have been playing festivals and to huge crowds in the UK.
-
And we all know how many people would fly over from the UK to SF to see them!

That sucks...I really got a ticket for this show primarily to see SSPU...
It's weird that OK Go sounded bad. I have seen them a bajillion times in both small and large venues, and they always rocked it.
Did they not dance?
They always dance during encores of shows...even before the dance for A Million Ways was formulated...big shame if they cut that out..

AHA, i knew it - you're bi-coastal!!!
i'd consider going to your SF place if the festival was in NoCal... but i'm not driving from La to SF for a day or two, too lazy :)

I'm seeing them again at a small venue in April. If I could have heard them over the chatter of teens and chardonnay sipping yuppies, they may have sounded great. I'll never know. I will tell you this - I erupted[/i] on a click of 3-4 20 somethings chick who kept talking louder and louder as SSPU got louder and louder. Smackette was not happy with me and left for a few minutes out of embarassment. I really tried to see SSPU but the crowd made it nearly impossible. I'm not even sure if being any closer to the stage would have made it any better because the majority of the front crowd were teenie boppers there to see Snow Patrol, although the ones in front tend to be music fans and may have been more attentive.
If anything, get there early and get close to the stage. And I hope you have a better experience then I did.

The last time I saw them in SF at Slims - 470 people. That's quite the jump.
-
Are the SSPU's playing anywhere local as a headliner?
-
SSPU are playing at my house
-
I hope so.
Yeah, they were doing a few shows at the Cat a while ago but I couldn't go to any of them.
And all I ever thought of them as was that cool little Silverlake band...playing their little Spaceland shows and Sea Level in-stores...now they're on mtv. So it will be interesting :)
I usually try to get up close to photograph anyway, so I'll make sure to get there super early. Thanks for the tip.

Kosmo, when do tickets go on sale and can I save a buck if I get tickets thru will call?

I know the song and no, they didn't play it in SF, Portland or Salt Lake. Looking at that set list I posted above, we didn't get Tiny Little Fractures either, but Portland did.
Oh, and SSPU are definitely making a habit of starting 10 minutes early, so be prepared for them to start 10 minutes before the time it says on your ticket.
