Title: Washington Post Disparages Virgin Fest Bookers
Post by: ggw on July 24, 2008, 11:50:00 am
Hey Virgin Festival Decision Makers - Ditch Book the Band (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/postrock/)

Hollywood Undead, coming to a stage near you. Unfortunately. It's got to go. In theory, maybe it's not a terrible idea. You embrace the Internet, have a direct connection with the fans and give a chance to an up-and-coming act. But in practice you end up with a band like this year's winner, Hollywood Undead. Never heard of them? But with "their blend of hip-hop, pop, metal, and screamo, these masked L.A. natives attracted over 400,000 fans on MySpace, topping the site's music charts for weeks." How could you have missed them?

  <img src="http://www.nationalnoisemedia.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2006/12/hollywood-undead-promo-pic.jpg" alt=" - " />
Hollywood Undead, coming to a stage near you. Unfortunately.

Who exactly benefits from this? Not the Virgin Festival, which now has to tarnish its pretty good name by giving stage time to this band. Oh yeah, this band that has never played a show before. Bob Dylan! Kanye West! Nine Inch Nails! Lil Wayne! And ... the debut performance by some tools from California who make Insane Clown Posse sound like the Beatles and won this contest because their "fans" have nothing better to do but sit on the computer and vote for them!

This is a danger when you rely on Internet voting. Internet voters are even more incompetent than those in Palm Beach County. It's how Corey Hart beat out David Wright, it's how "The Dark Knight" is hailed as the best movie ever (better than "Corky Romano"!!!) and it's how Hollywood Undead became the band that will kick off the second day of Virgin Festival. This is a band that exists only on the Internet, so of course they will be able to mobilize their Internet fans to vote for them. Bands have "devoted Internet followings" for a reason. Namely, the band is beyond terrible and it must harbor some sort of community to make itself relevant. Not that the alternatives were much better, mind you. When We Are Scientists is the best choice, you know you're in trouble.

Are any of the people who for voted Hollywood Undead actually going to shell out the big bucks to see the band in a few weekends? Of course not. That would be about six weeks of allowance for most of those kids. The festival will make no extra money on this. If people see Hollywood Undead as the only late addition to the lineup that will not make them want to buy a ticket if they were on the fence.

Only Hollywood Undead comes out ahead.

So next year, book an additional band from the start, give an extra half hour to a headliner, get the Oriole bird to do an interpretive dance to "Metal Machine Music." Just do anything but give the MySpace morons a chance to make everyone involved look foolish.

Meet the kettle.

Isn't it those same internets that give a voice to the non-media bloggers like David Malitz as well?

Hey, I've got something to say that isn't really news but would allow me to get something off my chest - thank god for the internet.

 What's the difference?

what an eff up.  thanks to an army of teens in california, we get to deal with their flavor-of-the-month.  sounds like this band's main talent is street-teamer management.  to think that their first show is going to be behind a 50,000 watt PA.  maybe they'll get heat stroke.

could someone please show up for their show and hold up a sign that reads "go back to the internet where you came from" ?

"Dancing around like a bunch of faggots/Funny as fuck, just ask Bob Saget"

I thought those "scene" kids were supposed to be progressive now. I heard the first song on their MySpace page and I can't believe how annoying they are.

I'm kind of embarrassed that V-Fest is flying them out here, and paying them to play this show.

I think the promoters really just want to mock anyone who bought a ticket. Now you get to see these talentless shitheads along with Paramore and Taking Back Sunday! It's like a sub-par Warped Tour for half the day.

The Washington Post has it right (except We Are Scientists aren't half bad). The V-Fest made a really dumb mistake.

Is it fair to say the V-Fest has one of the highest single day price tags of any American festival, for the least amount of bands and stages?
Title: Re: Washington Post Disparages Virgin Fest Bookers
Post by: sweetcell on July 24, 2008, 04:06:00 pm
i'm pretty sure it's the most expensive, i can't think of any other major festival that charges as much.

the worse value proposition (# bands/stages vs. price) is questionable.  don't forget the dance tent, i'd consider that a third stage.  VFest has a really solid line-up for folks into EDM.

friday @ outsidelands (http://www.sfoutsidelands.com/) has VFest beat in terms of a worse value, on a one-day basis.

if it's not oppressively hot on day 1 of lolla, i plan to catch fuck buttons @ 12:15 - first act of the day on the at&t stage.  on saturday i might catch the ting tings, also first band of the day on that stage.

I know I'm in the minority on this board but I'd rather pay more to see "bigger" bands on fewer stages. This year if I end up going it's for Foo, Kanyizle and NIN-if I saw those artists alone it would be $175+.

Worth posting the whole blurb:

The Hollywood UndeadStraight from the ghettofabulous streets of Hollywood rises this up & coming 7 piece fusion of morbid Hip Hop, surrealistic Hardcore, and fashion conscious Metal, and not since Motley Crue has a Hollywood band generated the type of buzz and blatant admiration that has been created by this recent addition into the scene.
Populated by 7 heavy metal/hardcore hooligans, the Hollywood Undead began as the brainchild of J-Dog and Tha Producer, two streetwise scene kids who frequented the Los Angeles club scene. The Hollywood skyline was their shelter. Drinking, thugging, and debauchery were their trademark.

After 1 day of dropping their sound onto Myspace, their account exploded like TNT. The Hollywood Undead space grew in size in a matter of hoursstarting out with an audience of 10, and blowing up into one that included several thousand users just in their first day of entry into the space. Hundreds of comments from awestruck admirers. Thousands of adds per day on average. Tens of thousands of profile views. Close to 4000 DOWNLOADS PER DAY. Reaching number 12 on the myspace top bands chart, then number 8, then number 4, and finally after only 1 week taking on the number 1 spot, beating out some of the most famous bands in the world. Bands like Nine Inch Nails, Coldplay, System Of A Down and even their friends "From First To Last".

The band now consists of an entourage of Hollywood brats that have been selectively recruited into the gang/group on the basis of their mad skillz: J Dog, Da Kurlzzz, Charlie Scene, Tha Producer, Funny Man, The Server,

Donning bone-chilling masks so that their strapping good looks cannot take away from their musical artistry, The Hollywood Undead has burst onto the scene to show The Kids how it's really done

the article is right and wrong.

they're right in the sense that it is a disgrace that hollywood undead is doing their first ever live performance on such a stacked bill. do these kids even know who chuck berry is?

but they're wrong by saying they need to ditch "book the band". what the Vfest promoters need to do is pick bands that would easily fit in at V-fest.

I remember seth saying, on this forum, in the v-fest thread, "I would never book limp bizkit".

 well... whats the difference here?...

I was kind of wondering about this. I was wondering if maybe the voting was rigged, and hollywood undead was picked to win from the start... the catch for them was, they weren't going to get paid for the show.

v-fest promoters get an act for free, one that most people will probably forget, while hollywoodd undead plays to a big crowd (something i'm sure they'd love to do) and the fans who vote get to feel like they're really voting and being given something cool (even if their band doesn't win).

i'm probably wrong, but it really wouldn't surprise me that much if this was the case (given that aiden won last year as well). because seriously, WAS should have had it in the bag.

however, it's somewhat understandable that they were picked for inclusion in the contest if you believe their myspace hype, and that none of the organizers bothered listening to them.  that last part is the QC issue - just because they have online hype with california teens/fratboys-to-be doesn't mean they should be included in VFest's lineup.

After further reflection, there is no way this is legit.

This "band" has to be some sort of a Borat meets Andy Kaufman type of joke.

 You heard it here first.

this is not directed at sonick.  this is one of my peeves.  if you're going to do something like quote the bible to make a point, at least do it right.  if someone had said that the bible says "god hates gays," i'm sure that mr. chip on his shoulder would've freaked out.  this is my minor freak out.

 1. the word tattoo is not likely an accurate translation.  it's probably more like: "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD." KJV. LEV 19:28.

a heathen custom of the time was to make deep cuts into the flesh in a time of mourning, to honor the dead.  there was also a common practice inking or painting (much like henna) or using hot irons to create floral and other designs that were often used to honor "false idols."  this is not the same thing as tattooing.

 B. there is no mention of the devil whatsoever.

 c. the verse before this one says that you can't cut your hair or trim your beard in a specific manner, and the one after says that you shouldn't let your daughter be a whore, lest the land fall to whoredom and wickedness.  there are also rules about what you can eat, and when, and how to make a proper sacrifice, and what to wear.

these laws were designed to keep people from taking on the religious customs of the surrounding groups.  even if it does mean don't get tattooed, which is debatable, it means don't get tattooed in the religious context of the surrounding tribes.  just like it doesn't mean you can't cut your hair or your beard, but rather that you shouldn't cut your hair in the specific manner that the priests of the surrounding tribes did.

IV. leviticus is the old laws. it's wiped out by the new testament, if you believe such things.

i could go on, but it's late.

the bible is the king of interpretation; that's why it was written.  men who think god talk through them like to confuse.  i mentioned the devil, because i like to say the devil.  he's such a good reference point, and is used to being called out on the spot.  if it is against god (like stated in the bible), it is for the devil (that's what false idols represent).  chip on my shoulder?  from actions of the past?  i'm angry from things of the future, more than likely.  and god does hate gays.  they are so gosh darn perky, he could just screech.  don't you read the news or attend funerals of fallen soldiers?  the "god hate fags" church will protest the club if you don't believe.  i don't care if YOU, mr. covered in tattoos, do whatever you like to your body.  you could tattoo yourself on yourself, then re-tattoo that new person which you have become, for all i care.  i was just curious to the logic why people do it.  i've always wondered how much of it is "i really like it and the way it looks," and how much of it is, "i want someone else besides myself to look at me." like goth kids, who get all pissed off when you do look at them.  no law replaces old laws from the bible, when all laws from the bible are false to begin with . . . for i am one with the lord without it and the religion (created by the devil (he's smiling now) that came from it.

Jack Johnson.  He plays music for people who secretly hate music.  Other terrible acts (in addition to those you mentioned) include: Stone Temple Pilots, The Offspring, Nine Inch Nails, Kanye West, Shudder To Think (for having the audacity to call themselves STT even though Chris Matthews, Mike Russell and Stuart Hill will not be playing) and the insufferable Moby.  Really, the only bands playing at this festival that I'd wanna see are The Stooges and The Black Keys.

 Cheech & Chong
Fri September 12 Tower Theatre,  Philadelphia, PA
Sat    September 13 Warner Theatre, Washington, DC

(weed has gotten expensive, doncha know, enough to get them to reunite for a "comedy" tour)

 TRICKY
 Friday Sept 5th
 Trocadero Theatre, Philadelphia, PA
(maybe a DC date in tonight's e-mail blast?  please?!?)
