FRIDAY
Red flags should pop up around the current orgy of 80s nostalgia when has-beens like Eddie Money, at the State Theatre, come back for blatant cash-grabs.
DJ Selector Seth certainly isn??t sick of the Greed Decade. Backstage at Black Cat is Seth??s Notorious, a dance party billed as featuring ??the 80s and beyond.?
Yes, M83 (aka Anthony Gonzalez) is French and plays electronic music. Now forget about those cheesy stereotypes. At Black Cat??s mainstage, M83 expertly fuses the driving, intense rhythms of typical dance music with the gauzy, moody synths of shoegaze.
Taking a break from jazz-bluegrass-fusion geniuses Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Victor Wooten ?? at 9:30 Club ?? may be the best and most inventive bassist in popular music.
The monthly Saccharine party at Zucchabar in Adams Morgan features DJs Pogo, Medusa, and Strange spinning the finest britpop, indie and synth. Get there by 9pm for an hour of open bar.
Bill Kirchen, at Jammin?? Java, is a legend of the local scene. A Washington Area Music Association Hall of Famer, Kirchen was an Americana and roots-rock trailblazer in the 70s.
SATURDAY
Inoffensive pop/rockers Maroon 5 take a Grammy victory lap at the recently-saved-from-extinction Merriweather Post Pavilion. Openers and walking contradictions The Thrills play sunny California pop, by way of Ireland.
In the main room of Black Cat is DJ Mark Zimin??s Mousetrap, the venerable britpop dance night celebrating its sixth year. If you don??t feel like paying the $8 cover, check out bloggers/DJs Blue State spinning for free on the backstage.
mtvU??s Campus Invasion, at University of Maryland??s Cole Fieldhouse, features a double dose of the hottest British pop. Razorlight may be getting the most press with their Strokes-esque garage stylings, but anthemic rockers Muse are wily veterans of the hype-driven scene.
Local upstarts and Express-favorites Cartel take their tightly-honed atmospheric sound to DC9. Run Away From Humans and PS open.
World-beat turned neo-soul collective Zap Mama, at 930 Club, puts on a unique and visually stunning live show. Philly veterans and The Roots protégés Jazzyfatnastees open.
Remember ??Hanging By a Moment,? the huge hit and the most-played radio track of 2001? Christian rockers Lifehouse, at State Theatre, sure hope you do.
SUNDAY
Reigning R&B diva Alicia Keys and conveniently-named newcomer John Legend finish a two-night stand at DAR Constitution Hall. Both young piano prodigies, their hip-hop inflected neo-soul dominate Billboard charts and Grammy ceremonies.
Handsome Boy Modeling School is one of innumerable side projects for underground hip-hop legends Dan ??The Automator? Nakamura and Prince Paul. These multi-talented producers and performers play dress-up with their quirky alter-egos Chest Rockwell and Nathaniel Merriweather.
With the success of The Cricklewood Massive??s iPod Jukebox Night, DC9 is trying their hand at the concept with Fifteen Minutes of Fame, featuring drink specials and giveaways all night. Bring your own MP3 player (iPods not necessary) and take a stab at DJing.

I'm pretty sure that Eddie Money has been touring regularly for years.
I thought you were going to mention Hidden Hand @ the Warehouse? Spirit Caravan were one of those critically-lauded but relatively unknown bands. Plus, Wino even guest-starred on Dave Grohl's Probot album.
-
I saw Spirit Caravan when they were called Shine open up for Fugazi at that church on Columbia Rd. a while back. I guess this was before metal (okay, I don't know the genre) became respected again because most of the crowd was laughing. I have to admit, it was odd at first but after watching them for a few songs, you could tell they were pretty heavy.
-
How would you go about announcing that on the Express?
Get your bong on? Break out the dankety dank?

Eddie Money is a "has been" by virtue of him still touring/recording, but no longer making music that clicked for the masses. A "has been", but not a "cash grabber".
Having not put out albums in 10 years, Gang of Four or the Pixies would be the "cash grabbers".
-
Pack the one-hitter, gas up the Camaro, and head down to the Warehouse Next Door on Saturday night for the nuggalicious stoner rock stylings of Hidden Hand.

arrrrrgh, yet again i forgot WND, and even after truly meaning to include it ... my apologies to snailhook ... must be all that stoner metal killing my short term memory
and didn't know that about eddie money, just saw that he hadn't released anything in 6-7 years

I never thought I'd be involved in a heated debate over Eddie Money ... but the last studio album he released was in spring 1999 (six years ago), and before that 1995 ... you wouldn't call ANY tour of his a cash-grab, even if he tours regularly?
-
hey hoya when you do the club pix bit on the Gang of Four besure to only mention it's a blantant cash grab as thats what important to everyone.
hey charlie, did it ever occur to you that there are people out there who don't give a rats ass about a band like the Gang of Four or Eddie Money out doing a cash grab? don't care if they are "washed up", maybe they just want to see them in concert one more time. and do you REALLY think everyone needs to know your opinion on everything especially whens it just not very funny or imformed.

Eddie does it for the sheer love of the music.
-
I wasn't the one who brought up the terms "cash grab" or "washed up". That was Hoyasaxa. I was only commenting on what extent I agreed with him.

Search a little more. It's called "working". He was also at the club just last year. I could care less, but a strange way to word the event and as an opener to your assumed demographic readers.
-
yes hoya did use the terms you decided to use... however you don't need to take every chance to make bitchy designed to provoke comments about acts you know others on this forum are looking forward to see, regardless of how you feel about them. at some point ya just gotta let go, because it annoys me and possibly other posting regulars. not to mention the lurkers who come here for information and not continually being confronted with the latest dig on some artist you deem unworthy.
-
BRAVO Kosmo...thank you. Well said, and I'm sure what everyone else is thinking too.

you listen to the radio that much?
i dont even know what the hell song you are speaking of anyway.....
-
I think you should have mentioned K-os in the blurb about the Handsome Boy Modeling School show.
Hip hop isn't really my thing, but the few tracks of K-os that I've heard on WOXY were quite good, musically. Plus he's Canadian, so you would have gotten bonus points from sonick.

don't they have to play a certain % of canadian artists?
and i'm not that young, i was a soph/junior in college way back then
-
With all this Ryan Adams talk, it reminds me that you forgot to mention this one.
Ex-Whiskeytown guitarist's Phil Wandescher's haunting guitar, combined with Jesse Sykes' dark, soulful voice make Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter a much more interesting act than Ryan Adams, Caitlin Cary, or any of the other ex-members of Whiskeytown. See them make their DC area headlining debut at Iota on Sunday. I would, but my Mom is visiting this weekend.
-
Could you please provide us all a list of bands that are acceptable to dig (dislike), and another list that we are required to dig (like)?

most stations are, yes. its like 30% or something. but its not quite so bad. most kids in Canada (that i knew) tended to like Canadian bands the most anyway. Sort of like a "home team" kind of thing.
it wasnt all good though, imagine hearing Tom Cochrane's "Life Is A Highway" every 30 minutes of your life for the entire 8th grade!!!!!!!

the list of bands that are ok to listen and discuss
-
I find that it's ok to talk about any band as long as you make fun of them, rip on them needlessly for making too much money or playing a crappy venue or playing past the age of 35, and then chastise their fans for liking them. I see no problems with that whatsoever. Because I thrive on negativity and antagonizing. But hey, that's just me :)
-
and besides lists are silly, what do think this is pitchfork or stylus? surely they have forums you can ply your trade on...

She's purty. Excellent write-up. I'm skipping the show, but I helped her some at a show last year - nice woman too.

I don't think Pogo spins at Zucchabar anymore.
