We've covered/hyped/listed shows at VL plenty of times:

 http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/music/hot-lava-owns-you/ (http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/music/hot-lava-owns-you/)

 http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/music/listening-party-thalia-zedek/ (http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/music/listening-party-thalia-zedek/)

  http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/live-dc/mega-shoegaze-extravaganza/ (http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/live-dc/mega-shoegaze-extravaganza/)

  http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/live-dc/livefastdie-listening-party/ (http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/live-dc/livefastdie-listening-party/)

  http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/live-dc/monday-magic-velvet-lounge/ (http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/live-dc/monday-magic-velvet-lounge/)

but since we don't pay our show reviewers, the things that get covered first are ones that they come to us and say "I want to cover this show"

when there is something we think would be interesting we'll push it "hey would anyone be able to write up Silver Mt. Zion @ the cat?"

but obvi people are going to be more excited to cover something they want to see anyway.  and that means the "bigger" shows get covered more often.  if we could cover every show every night we would.  we are constantly looking for more contributors so if you know someone who is ape shit about covering obscure no wave influenced acts at VL, we'd love to hear from them.

No - he was making fun of BYT because he thinks we only cover coked out underwear parties.

I went to it...."meh".  I felt they were really under-prepared.  And after a bit of them babbling "hey remember teenage jesus / contortionists / lydia lunch " i really started to drift off...they should have shown more pictures and videos early on.

not worth the $20 at all

 $5 maybe.

thanks man
yeah it was a whole lot of fun. the stories and old photos had me reminiscing about DC's own awesome happenings in the 80s when everything from georgetown (the roy rogers, the theaters and little weirdo stores where punks, skins and mods hung out) to downtown (old 930, dc space, safari club, 15 minutes, crobar) was still raw as shit.

I dont know that they came off all unprepared. I expected it to be exactly the "remember when ...?" anecdotal sesh that it was.  the presentation off thurston moore's powerbook and peeking at his desktop with all his personal shit beats a regular ol' slideshow any day.

yeah i was hoping he would open 'sy basement jams 08'

I guess I was hoping they would talk a bit more about bands than just the ones they did talk about.

But I haven't read the book, so maybe thats all that is in the book.

I did watch a movie about No Wave a few years back that I got from Netflix....it was decent.

nice to see thurston wearing our labelmates' shirt (robedoor). the politics & prose afternoon signing was pretty chill, not many people around.

byron won't be reading from no wave next week; it'll be a totally different thing.

and i'm grateful that you have. however, "attending" is different than "covering" or "hyping". anyone can cover an event; it takes more effort to actually go to it. aside from a few really audience-friendly shows i've booked, i don't see any BYT people at the more challenging shows (except for maybe fitsum taking pictures). but this is par for the course in dc. IMO, BYT reflects the status quo here, not the fringe.

of course, i realize that most of this music appeals to a very narrow range of people in the dc area. most of the people who were supportive of this music have gotten older and have families, and there's only a handful of younger kids into it. dc's not a center for experimentation and desperate expression, though the ingredients are there for it. it seems like there's such an emphasis on fashion and acceptance here, rather than the art itself.

and for those who think fashion is art, fine...but a piece of clothing has never made me feel glad to be alive.

by covering I meant attending and writing it up and/or taking photos.

you obviously haven't been looking at the right fashion, then...  :)
why don't you check out gareth pugh or hussein chalayan...for starters.

there were many shows that i would have gladly attended at your club and shot for BYT but i was underage and not about to use a fake in DC.

I don't see how someone can cover a show with out investing something of themselves -- be it actually liking the artist or the performance -- which is what I think you mean by "attending", as opposed to
just sorta being there, taking notes and being straight on the facts, which is what I think you mean by merely "covering". Personally, I'm more interested in the fact that experimental, "difficult" music is happenning in DC at all and that it has a venue than the particular artists themselves. Like Cale pointed it out, people who are passionate about scene or whatever and can drop knowledge on the related artists and culture should step up and contribute.

At the end of the day tho, BYT is a blog made by people with similar interests. I'd say those interests are wider than most.

I don;t think there's anywhere on earth where there's no emphasis on 'fashion and acceptance'.

I thought the talk/slideshow was interesting and I'm glad I went, but for $22 they could have at least turned on the air conditioning.

snailhook, to be fair though, do you know who many of the byt people who shoot/review are, could you spot them at a show? there are a few on this board who are active for byt. hell, i'm one of them and i don't even know who many of the other byt staffers are.
