Title: I'll trade my soul for a ticket...
Post by: nmsles on July 29, 2008, 08:07:00 pm
So, I have two extra Bon Iver tickets, and I was browsing craigslist to try to sell them.  People are offering upwards of $100 for them, which I found ridiculous, but very exciting (in the sense that I will be rich!).

It made me wonder...what is the most you'd offer for concert tickets, and to what concert would you offer it?

Face value.

To any concert I'd like to go to but get shut out of.

And if I can't find such a deal, life goes on.

No beef here with scalpers though; if you can find someone willing to pay absurd amounts of money for your tickets, more power to ya.

I believe I was on record as offering $250 for a Smashing Pumpkins @ 9:30 ticket last July before more tickets got released.

I'd pay probably $1000 to see a band i love get back together (Floyd or NMH probably)

For a 'common' concert of a band that tours...no more than double face.

I bet that if an NMH show were to ever happen again, it'd be an on-the-spot spur-of-the-moment kinda thing probably taking place in some random town after one of the members' many bands' sets partially in order to avoid people paying $1k to see them.

 Holy run-on sentence!  :)

i don't usually pay more than face... but these days for big concerts you're talking close to $140 for the good seats...

 so i'll pay that.

 i can remember a time i wouldn't pay $50....

but basically i won't pay more than face.. but to get really good tickets for example- to see acdc- i bet its going to cost me...

i don't think i've ever paid more than double of face for a ticket.  even for high-demand shows, if you look around hard enough you can find something reasonable.  i always have.

however, i'd paid a whole lot to get myself to a show - airfare, hotel, etc.  same difference in the end.

I don't think I've paid more than face value for anything in about 20 years.

It would have to be a huge band in a tiny venue.  Something like The Stones at 9:30.  Even then I'd probably only pay a few hundred $$$.  I don't even pay the top-tier face-value price for some of the larger shows I go to.

I'd pay a few hundred to see R.E.M. at the club, but I imagine I know enough people that I could find a way to get a ticket much cheaper.

swapping tickets with other fans is another way of keeping ticket costs under control.  would have cost me an arm and a leg to see all the radiohead shows i'm seeing this tour if it wasn't for trading.

I paid about $250 for a Redskins/Cowboys ticket (lower level) then found out, just like with concerts, people are trying to give them away the day of the game.

Somewhat related, I was trying to sell an extra ticket at the club because my friend bailed at the last minute and I was asking way below face value. The 930 security guard said he was going to have me arrested for scalping. Haven't been back since.

I doubt I would ever pay over face value for a ticket, but what face value would I pay for a Smiths reunion? I honestly can't put a number on it.  $500, $600, $1,000????

I had two $150(ea) box tickets up for grabs at The Cure show down here recently. I was selling them for whatever someone wanted to pay within reason, as I had been given 4 tickets by a vendor so just wanted some beer money out of the deal. Some chump came over and I showed him the tickets and I said $50 for the two...he offered me $20 so I tore them up in front of his face.....the look on his face was worth the $20 I didn't make.

Ha!  A guy once started berating me because I wanted face-value (about $25, I think) for my extra ticket to a sold-out show.  He offered me $10 and when I said no, he started calling me a dick, yelling at me, etc.   I turned around and gave to ticket to the next person I saw, absolutely free.  The guy just about lost it when I did that.

That's really odd because I've seen several security guys at 9:30 tell people they could sell their tickets in front of the club as long as it was for no more than face value.  Maybe the show wasn't sold out and they didn't want you competing with the box office??

As for me, I will never pay or charge more than face value for a ticket on principle.  If this means I miss shows, so be it.  I've also been in bad financial shape but still refused to sell my extra tickets for more than face value.  If I got the ticket for free, you get the ticket for free, but it'd be nice if you'd buy me a drink at the show.

I went with a group of people to a show in Richmond that wasn't sold out so we were going to buy tickets at the box office. As we're coming out of the parking garage, there's this kid selling two extras for $10 each. They were $15 each as face.

One of my friends buys one but my other friend starts going "Five? Will you take five? I'll give you five!" in a really excited voice. The seller goes, "Ten dollars is the price." Again, my friend goes, "Five? Come on: five? Better then nothing." Again, the seller goes, "I said ten. I'm already losing five dollars. You can buy at the box office for fifteen if you want."

My friend starts laughing and goes, "Ha ha, sorry man, I guess it's just the jew in me. Here's your ten." As he's pulling out his wallet, the kid goes, "That's racist. I'd rather eat it then sell it to you. You can go pay 15." and walks away, refusing to sell any of us the ticket.

Not money, but I once camped out overnight to get Bob Dylan tickets at a smaller venue in Cincinnati, OH.  He played Bogarts (about 1,000 capacity) when a tour with Paul Simon was cancelled.  This was around 94.  Had to wait in line all night to get tickets.  There were probably a couple hundred people there at 1am.  No internet or phone sales you had to physically go get them.  The concert was a few weeks later and was one of my best live music experiences.

BEE-YOU-TEE-FULL!!!

People can be complete jerks.  If I can, I'll give a ticket away it there's little demand, but sometimes I'm selling it for a friend who is hoping to just make his money back.  Oy.  I love those moves, Bombay and Skeletal!

I haven't paid over face in ages, but I've paid some high end prices.

Last time I paid more than face was for Social D.    It was my bad I didn't get tickets in time, and a friend was super excited (and he doesn't go to many shows, so I had to make him happy).  I think I paid $60 each for $25 tickets.

The most annoyed I've been about ticket prices is that g*damn Police tour bullshit where they charge you to join the fan club to get presale tickets.  I can't believe I did it.  I almost didn't, but a really fun group of folks wanted to go, and if I'm going then I refuse to sit in the back or way up top.

This is how the 9:30 spoils me.  I can't bear to be all the way in the back of an arena...

I only ever charge face when I'm selling a ticket.  Usually I do it here or at the band's website, so it's a good deed for music fans.  I charged more than face once -- mostly because so many people wanted these tickets, it was a way to decide.  I can't remember what show, but I felt so creepy handing the tickets over that I won't do it again.  It was something at DAR....

I'd pay lots of money to see some bands in small venues.  Like the Foos at 9:30.  If they sold VIP access to that (in order to get 'radio only' tickets), I'd pay a boatload.  But still only three figures.   ;)

A few years back, when Weezer was just starting to make their come back, they played Bender Arena at AU for like $11.  I waited too long for tickets, and it sold out.  I decided to head the show anyway with three friends to see if we could pick some up outside before the show.

The first girl we talked to with extras asked us how much money we had.  "How much are you asking?" I said.  "I said how much money do you have on you."  Needless to say, we passed.

After a while, we were no closer to getting tickets, so we were going to head home.  Before leaving, I thought it would be funny to go up to the will call window and try to pick up non-existent tickets, and then raise a ruckus when they couldn't find my order.

After taking my name, the woman looked for tens minutes around the office, before indicating that she didn't have a record of the tickets and that I should step into the office.  When I get inside, she handed me three student passes to get into the show, completely free.  She did take my credit card number, and I would've been happy to pay the fees if necessary, but I never got charged.

I still wish I had run into that woman inside, just to rub it in her monkey face.

I was hanging outside the 930 getting some fresh air a couple of years ago while my daughter was inside at some Ska concert. There was some kid hustling tickets and this girl was trying to buy one from him. He wanted $25 but she only had $20, which I think was the face value. He was being such a prick, and the show had already started and he had a fistful of tickets so not exactly a good businessman either.. This poor girl was desperate to get in so the 'dad' in me kicked in and I gave her the $5. She took the money from me and bought the ticket, then realized what had just happened and asked me what I wanted from her.....I just told her I want her to go in and enjoy the show. It was worth $5 to see her little face light up.

after watching the first installment of "30 days" on dvd (from the "supersize me" guy), where he looks at the nationwide struggle of living on minimum wage and how people's lives are effected everyday by "paycheck to paycheck" mental breakdowns, i now value what i have and am fortunate to work in a "professional" setting where i can save money, plan accordingly and truly now know the meaning of what are important "necessities."

i have given up shows for a while, and would only pay above face value for a one on one meeting with jesus christ himself.

These stories are quite good. The most I ever sold tix were for pit tix to see Coldplay. I got offers that were ridiculous, and I just couldnt sell them for that much money. I sold them to a guy for an amount we both decided was fair. I also got offers for much less than what I paid which was an insult. (and coincidentally, i might be selling another floor ticket for Coldplay in NJ - but im using the other one so i just want a hardcore fan next to me).

I tend to give away tix if I buy too many, but some people now think that if i have extras I should give them away. Ehhh. Doesnt work that way. Especially when I gave away a Colin Meloy ticket and my friend wouldnt even buy me a drink. Its just f-ed up (i wotn give her ANY more tix).

I generally sell them for face, unless I know there is a major need for tix. I'll admit I sold my EITS and Hot Chip tix and made a decent amount. I felt bad since I ended up dating the guy I sold my EITS ticket too. LOL.

I figure with the number of tickets Ive given away for free, plus with the number of shows Ive marked up - I come out even.

I thought of another adventure in second-hand ticket sales...

I was sitting outside the 930 club reading City  Paper last October waiting for Miss P to get there because she was selling me her extra for Stars that night. About 15 minutes before Stars set, this guy came up to me and handed me an extra ticket and told me it was "warm" inside. I looked at him like he was nuts and he said something; I forget the exact words, but basically that he thought he was doing a good deed and letting me get off the streets for a few hours because I was homeless.

I was wearing a Burberry sweater too, so I have no idea what he was smoking or why he thought I was homeless, but whatever, it saved me $20.

That's the most absurd thing I've heard in a good long time. Burberry has experienced an unprecedented, historic rebirth over the last 12 years under the guidance of Rose Bravo and the design adaptations Christopher Bailey has brought to the venerable brand. Bailey, in particular, is arguably the most applauded fashion designer of this decade.

when wilco played their two-night gig at the 930 a few months ago, i had two extra tickets to the first night.  street value for the ticket, if i remember correctly, was around $125 for the $35 ticket.  i didn't want to make money on them (because being on the other end of this arrangement totally sucks) but i wanted to make sure they landed in the hands of a fan.  i sold them at face to a college kid who was in town on an unpaid internship helping inner city kids.  that was a good thing.

at the wilco show in october 06, i was locked out of getting a ticket for the show.  the night of, a friend and I stood outside the club and asked everyone for an extra ticket.  terrible luck.  some guy wanted $100 cash for the $25 ticket.  however, i did meet some cool australian siblings and a brittish dude.  when one guy tried to sell his tickets to a guy who had just showed up, all my new international friends yelled at him saying "he was here first, he was here first!"  he sold it for more than i would pay, though.  as the opening band was halfway through their set, a group of girls walked up to the club and i asked if they had extras.  they did, two in fact, and we bought them for face.  had they walked 20 more feet, they could have made a ton more money.

The most - proportionately -- I ever paid was for U2 at Tempe (filming for Rattle&Hum flick).
Tickets were $5 face.   I paid scalper $75 for one night; $150 the other.

Sadly, I get both Mankie and Julian, and I wouldn't mind having a drink with either one of them.  Of course one would be a warm bitters and the other would be a bubbly.

Only mankie would tell another boardie that perhaps something happened to them because they smelt like sour milk and only Julian would take offense to being told that (in his Burberry sweater no less).

I enjoyed the exchange much more than this thread.  For the record, only once did I decide to pay above face value for tickets (Anaheim in the World Series) and when I told my story about what Ticketbastard did to me, the guy sold it to me for face value.

I would never pay over face value.  And I never sell for over face value.  In fact, I would probably never pay over $50 which is easy when you swear off all arena shows.

I gave away my $10 ticket to Coldplay at the club, I guess it was for the second album, I had other plans, but somebody was pretty happy.  And I sold my A Perfect Circle ticket at face value outside the club at face value, I think I went to a Rhett Miller matinee at the Black Cat or something instead, pretty sure I was the only person to make that change in plans.

I'd pay an infinite amount to see a few of my favorite bands play together... If Nada Surf and Versus played together, I'd pay anything.  In reality, it would probably be an $18 ticket.

I wasn't taking offense, since I'd never met Mankie so he couldn't say if I have an odor or not.

If Mankie and I had actually spent time together, and then I was told I smelled bad, then I'd feel bad -- but about myself -- for being smelly. I'd only take offense if he told me purely to hurt my feelings, but if it came from a good place, I'd be OK with it, because I'd rather know I had a problem so I could rectify it.

I'm all about self-improvement, and I think it's better for ones to take their lumps and realize some hard truths about themselves then continue being a lower quality person then they otherwise could be.

considering that our policy is that as long as it's face value it's cool to sell outside the club, this is a problem.  please send me a pm with any more details you remember (what show, description of the staff member, that kind of thing), and i'll look into it.  i'm sorry that this happened to you.

i've had a drink or three with jules and he's an entirely delightful chap.  conversation is always lively.  but be weary if he starts pimping any drinks make with banana liquor.  you've been warned. [/b]

Okay, it's happened.  I'm looking for Karma.  I bought 4 Hold Steady tickets and I CANNOT FIND THEM.  One ticket was a birthday present, and the other for my friend who's moving to CA in September (and was planning to come to DC for this show from NY).  Any help finding 3 tickets (at face, since I'm already out $100 or however much the tix were) would be MUCHO MUCHO appreciated.

Nearly any other show I would just miss, but this would be a special show....

Right now on Craigslist folks are trying to get $50 per ticket (I can't remember if face value was $20 or $25 -- I think just $20).

Everyone on Craigslist is asking $40 for Hold Steady tickets (with shipping or postage on top of that).  I kinda want to turn them all in for scalping... I'm hoping supply far outstrips demand in the end and they get stuck with tickets.

 I'm still lookin' for 2.    :(

Maybe Karma was telling you to not drink so much.

if you bought them with a CC then they might be able to re-issue them.

Good thought.  Tried that, and the club doesn't have that capability (I think that's why they still rip off the stub rather than just read your ticket's bar code).

Ah, never mind. I misread your other post. My apologies.

I read a rumour that Drive By Truckers and the Hold Steady are going to tour together in November. Won't help you with your current predicament, but that would be the show to see.

Although unfortunately that sounds like it would be a DAR show to me (just guessing).

The Philly venue that was mentioned was the Electric Factory. Which DC venue does that equate to?

DAR or two nights at 930, probably.
