Original language below, have had to download a lot of this in not so legal ways unfortunately. Will throw up my new "A" music collection by the end of the month, when i'm hoping to be done.
But in the meantime, hit me with the B's, and please suggest album titles when appropriate, but "anything" also works. Not first names please...
-------------------
So, since I now have a decent paying job, and have rediscovered my love of actual CD's -- going the other way of others on the board apparently -- I have decided to reach out and discover the gobs and gobs of music I've missed along the way. Anything that came out this decade, I'm all over, but honestly, my musical tastes before that were poor, at best.
So, i'm doing this one letter at a time. And since I know you guys love this list stuff...
Artists that start with A, who should I be listening to, and what albums are important? Some artists are best covered by a Greatest hits album, others have one important album. All genres, all years, assume I know much less than I actually do. Let 'er rip...
-
The Bongos - Numbers with Wings
-
The Bluetones - Expecting to Fly or The Singles
Blur - Modern Life is Rubbish
-
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Methodrone or Take it From the Man

My fav B's, although I catalog via first names so there might be some last name B's that I'm missing:
The Band - Greatest Hits
I'm sure plenty will disagree and claim multiple albums are needed, but personally I think these guys are just a *wee* bit overrated and this comp is good enough
Basement Jaxx - Remedy
Duh: Beach Boys, Beatie Boys, Beatles <-- the new Love album in 5.1 is pretty amazing BTW
Beat happening - Beat Happening
Beck - Midnite Vultures and Odelay at least
Bee Gees - there is a new best of package that is perfect, def have both folk and disco eras in the collection
Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
Bela Fleck & the Flecktones - Live Art
Belle & Sebastian - one of my fav bands of all time, hard to recommend the best, but I'd say The Life Pursuit, If You're Feeling Sinister, Legal Man, and the Books EP for starters.
Beta Band, The - The Three EP's <-- holy shit so good
Big Star - #1 Record & Radio City on 1 disc
Bjork - Homogenic and Post for sure
Black Devil Disco Club - 28 After
Black Flag - Damaged
Blind Melon - Soup <-- no really!
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
I'd say at least one Blonde Redhead, but I'll let an uber fan suggest an album
Blondie - Parallel Lines or one of the best of collections
Blue Cheer - Vincebus Eruptum
Blur - honestly a little overrated in my opinion, best of disc at least should be in every collection
Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children
Booka Shade - Movements
Books, The - Thought for Food
Boredoms - Super AR
Boy Least Likely To, The - The Best Party Ever
Breeders - Last Splash
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
Built To Spill - um... all of them?
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
Byrds, The - Sweetheart Of The Rodeo
-
We could probably spend most of this thread arguing over the best Bowie album. Any of the below are good.
The Man Who Sold the World
Ziggy Stardust
Aladdin Sane
Low
Heroes
Scary Monsters
Black Sabbath. Ditto:
Black Sabbath
Paranoid
Master of Reality
Volume 4
Heaven and Hell
Blondie - Parallel Lines
B-52's - S/T or Wild Planet
-
Buffalo Springfield -- Retrospective
-

Ok - some amazing last name B's:
Alan Braxe & Friends - The Upper Cuts
Duh's: Bowie and James Brown
David Byrne - The Catherine Wheel, Feelings, Look Into The Eyeball, Lead Us Not Into Temptation, and of course My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts (the new remastered and expanded ver) but I guess that technically should be under E for Eno?
Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow & Rejoicing in the Hands <-- jaw droppingly beautiful
Donald Byrd - Ethiopian Knights
Glenn Branca - No. 1
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Peter Bjorn & John - Writer's Block <-- not sure if this counts
Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs
Tim Buckley - Starsailor
Vashti Bunyan - Just Another Diamond Day & Lookaftering
-

I think Diamond Dogs often get's left off the absolutely essential Bowie albums list. Also don't forget Hunky Dory.

i thought this was originally only 90s and earlier ...
the band - "music from big pink"
band of horses - "everything all the time"
beach boys - "pet sounds" is a must-have
--- for compilations, "good vibrations: thirty years of the beach boys" [5 cd box set from 1993] is amazing, but if you're looking for a one-disc-er, go with "sounds of summer: the very best of the beach boys" from 2003
beastie boys - "paul's boutique", "check your head"
beatles - you need pretty much every LP from "help!" through "let it be", then you need to choose between getting "past masters vols. 1 & 2"
or just the one-disc-er "1" ... at this point, "1" is probably better than "past masters", although you lose some crucial tracks going that way
beck - "mellow gold", "odelay"
bee gees - "best of the bee gees" [from 1969, compiles their crucial early career, some amazing stuff on here]
belle & sebastian - "if you're feeling sinister", "push barman to open old wounds"
the beta band - "the three e.p.'s" or "best of"
bettie serveert - "palomine"
beulah - "the coast is never clear" (i miss this band a lot)
big star - "#1 record", "radio city"
billy bragg - "talking with the taxman about poetry", "mermaid avenue", and "must i paint you a picture? the essential billy bragg" (2-discs)
bjork - "greatest hits" works fine for me
black flag - "damaged"
black sabbath - others will be much more informed on this, but "paranoid" is a must-have
black star - "black star"
blake babies - "innocence and experience" (1-disc comp)
bloc party - "silent alarm"
blondie - "parallel lines", "best of"
blur - "parklife"
boards of canada - "music has the right to children"
booker t & the mg's - "the best of..."
the bottle rockets - "the brooklyn side"
the breeders - "last splash"
brendan benson - "lapalco" (he really needs a comp)
british sea power - "the decline of british sea power"
broken social scene - "you forgot it in people"
buena vista social club - "s/t"
buffalo tom - "let me come over" or "asides from ..." for a comp
built to spill - "keep it like a secret"
burning spear - "marcus garvey"
burt bacharach - "the very best of" (not bacharach singing, but who really needs that)
buzzcocks - "singles going steady"
the byrds - you could just go with "greatest hits", which gets their early stuff, but if you like their later country stuff you need to get "sweetheart of the rodeo"
chet baker - "the best of chet baker sings"
dave brubek - "time out"
frank black - "teenager of the year"
james brown - get "20 all-time greatest hits" for a 1-disc-er or "50th anniversary collection" for a 2-disc-er ... you also need "in the jungle groove" or "the payback"
tim buckley - "starsailor"
-
B is a ridiculous letter so i'll limit to only indie pop selections.
the bats - daddy's highway
beat happening - beat happening
beulah - when your heartstrings break
biff bang pow - waterbomb (comp)
black tambourine - complete recordings
boyracer - boyfuckingracer (comp)
butterglory - are you building a temple in heaven
-

I'd recommend the "red" and "blue" 2-CD sets.
-

but that'll run you $50 v. $25 for both past masters v. $13 for "1" ... i guess you just have to look at the tracklists and see what you're missing on each

Hey, we have some pretty similar lists, although Ill Communication is a must IMO.
-
Stuff I have on file that hasn't been mentioned yet but should be:
Battles - Mirrored, EP C/B EP
Beach House - S/T
Beck - Guerolito (think this is far superior to the original)
Benga - Diary of an Afro Warrior
Big Black - Songs about Fucking, Pigpile
Big Blood - The Grove
Bishop, Sir Richard - Polytheistic Fragments, While My Guitar Violently Bleeds, Staged
Black Dice - Creature Comforts
Blockhead - Downtown Science
Blues Control - S/T
Bonnie Prince Billy - I See A Darkness
Bonobo - Dial M for Monkey
Boredoms - Pop Tatari
Boris - Akuma No Uta, Feedbacker, Pink, Flood, Rainbow, Heavy Rocks, Smile
Brightblack Morning Light - S/T
Broadcast - Tender Buttons
Burial - S/T, Untrue
-
Do comps count?
Byrne's Brazil Classics are great
&
Blue Skies Up - a fantastic Dogbox Records comp
-
Bad Brains - ROIR. This album kills time and time again.

I actually mentioned Booka Shade - Movements, but it needs the additional bump, shit is a modern classic. I have many of these other records as well in the collection, and like them a lot, but wouldn't consider a lot of them "essential" except for Big Black and Bonnie Prince Billy, don't know how I missed those two.
-
Oops, missed that.
There; fixed.

Dont forget 1.outside, not because its fairly new ('95?) its not good, thats an amazing album
My take: Argentinean band Babasonicos (infame or anoche, both pretty good stuff)

Oops, I'd actually go with The Ascension over No. 1, but both are solid.
And I see there is a Basement Jaxx singles comp - so def that over a single album.
-
Here's a dozen B's
Bobby Bare Jr
Brendan Benson
Andrew Bird
Bottle Rockets
Jeff Buckley
Beach Boys
Belle and Sebastian
BR549
Junior Brown
the Backsliders
Ben Folds Five
Big Sandy and His Fly Rite Boys
-
If I had to pick one Books album, it would be The Lemon of pink; leagues better than Thought for Food IMO.
-
Black Market Baby - Coulda...Shoulda...Woulda
The Bongos - Drums Along The Hudson
Black Flag - The First Four Years
Pat Benatar - In The Heat Of The Night
Bauhaus - The Singles Vol 1/Vol 2
-
Broadcast - The Noise Made By People
Broadcast - Haha Sound
Belly - Star
Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different
Betty Davis - s/t
Angelo Badalamenti - Blue Velvet SDTRK
Angelo Badalamenti - Twin Peaks SDTRK
Buena Vista Social Club - s/t
I'll think of more and get back to ya.

Don't get me wrong, I like them both, but I heard Thought For Food first and fell in love with it pretty hard, so I think I kinda hold it in a little higher regards for the originality factor. If I had heard Lemon of Pink first, I probably would rank it higher - honestly I think they're both just about equal in terms of quality.
BTW - did you see them live @ 9:30 a while back? Really interesting show.
-
I did. Very enjoyable; would see them again. Much longer set than what I was expecting too which is always nice.
Todd Reynolds was good too.
-
beck - mutations (his best after mellow gold)
soundtrack to Batman returns (elfman at his early best)
basehead - not in kansas anymore (don't ask)
black crowes - amorica (don't care, their best)
soundtrack to Blade runner (vangelis version)
beastie boys - paul's boutique (hate them now, but i still suck this album's d*#ck)
-
I want to change my Beck pick to One Foot in the Grave.
So so so so so underrated!
-
If Angelo Badalamenti belongs in the B's, then Betty Davis belongs in the D's. Learn your alphabet, sport.

dude . . . stereopathic soulmanure is not as raw as one foot, but boy does it deliver a powerful punch. no money no honey is by far the best thing beck ever put down on track. (sorry about the dude part)

i get really bored with "ill communication", seems so dated at this point, just reeks of the 90s ... "paul's boutique" and "check your head" are totally timeless
-
Gotcha.

Sorry! I wasn't thinking. All of these are great recommendations, though.
I'll replace Betty with Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash
and Brook Benton - Endlessly: The Best of Brook Benton.

i spent a day a couple of months ago listening to like 8 or 9 bowie albums, i was really surprised at how good "hunky dory" held up against the rest, it might be my favorite ... "station to station" also sounded great
-
Bingo. One of my top albums ever.

Great suggestions. I would also add:
the Boo Radleys -- either "Everything's Alright Forever" or "Giant Steps". Both are great.

Baterz- Out of Hell [a great relic of the mid-90s Australian punk/folky/strange scene] Baterz @ Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/baterz)
Belle and Sebastian- If Your Feeling Sinister [seconded]
Boards of Canada- Any album, but probably Music Has the Right to Children or In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country
Billy Bragg
Bikini Kill- Reject all American
Big mama Thorton
David Bromberg- Demon in Disguise
Beta Band- Three Eps [Again, thirded or fourth-ed]
Black Star- Black Star [seconded]
The Birthday Party
Blind Lemon

As in Classy Freddy Blassy?
Yup, RIP, I think you can still d/l the song on the wfmu mp3 blog
-
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl
-
I'll second Belly's Star, FWIW. One of my favorite albums from the early '90s.
-
Buckethead - Colma
Black Keys - Rubber Factory AND thickfreakness
Black Eyes - Black Eyes
Butthole Surfers - Electriclarryland
Benevento Russo Duo - Best Reason to Buy the Sun
Blind Melon - Blind Melon and Soup (shame that last album sucked)
Mr. Bungle - California(I dunno if this counts cause it's not really a guys name, but I'm gonna lose interest in this by the M's)
And buy the dvd of The Last Waltz by The Band. Best concert movie of all time. $10 anywhere.
-
Not sure if anyone mentioned Black Flag's "First Four Years," but if not, it should be on there.
I'd also suggest any Butthole Surfers albums up to "Locust Abortion Clinic."
-
bad religion - at least get no control and/or suffer
braid - frame and canvas

California is an amazing underrated album (as is Disco Volante) but I don't think it counts :)
Also, I'd take Stop Making Sense over Last Waltz any day.
-
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-B.R.M.C.
Their third album, Howl, is also quite good.

not a lot of love for beulah on here? they were my favorite band once upon a time

I love them! I desperately wish they were still around. They already got seconded by BookerT, but a different album than what you nominated. For the record, I'd go with When Your Heartstrings Break, but they're all excellent. I thought Redsock wanted stuff that was older than the last 10 years though, so perhaps people aren't mentioning them because of that.
-
beulah was a great little band and "when your heartstrings break" is pretty much a perfect album, probably the best E6 album besides "aeroplane," and this coming from a guy who was waaaay into olivia tremor control. i always wanted them to be a little better live, but miles's voice was always a bit off.
he does have a new song up on his myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/mileskurosky), pretty much sounds the way you'd expect it to sound.
i thought they went out with a whimper, "yoko" was a pretty bloated and bitter album.
-
Agree with you about Heartstrings and Yoko.
Forgot the include them on my list. They should be there. Coast is Never Clear and Heartstrings are both essentials.

Bardo Pond

after going through and updating my beatles collection, here's how i would approach it if you were buying the CDs (and not a complete beatles fanatic):
LPs
Rubber Soul
Revolver
Sgt. Pepper's
Beatles [White Album]
Abbey Road
Comps
1962-1966 [Red Album]
1967-1970 [Blue Album]
(forget about the past masters if you're going this route)
Close Call LPs:
on all of these earlier LPs you'll get the best tracks on the Red Album, but miss some great songs if you don't get the full albums ... it really depends on how much you like the early stuff:
"Please Please Me"
"With the Beatles"
"Help!" (this was the toughest call to leave out)
LPs to skip:
"Beatles for Sale": ehhhhh
"Magical Mystery Tour": you'll get most of the good tracks -- which were just compiled singles for the US market -- on the Blue Album
"Let it Be": a trainwreck, although "Let it Be.. Naked" is a pretty good listen
"Yellow Submarine": two essential tracks, both found on other albums or comps above
-
I will sell you every CD Hoya mentions above for $5 each. (http://www.930.com/cgi-bin/ubb-cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=016423;p=17#000646)

Chuck Brown -- Your Game: Live at the 9:30 Club
Blonde Redhead -- Fake Can Be Just As Good
-
Snailhook, your thoughts? You cover some ground most folks don't...

Most overlooked Beatles LP: A Hard Day's Night. Absolutely brilliant. Sure, the later stuff was more "important", but to me A Hard Day's Night is some of their best stuff.
