Whatcha got?
Devotchka friday
Festival headlined by Cluster at floristree sunday
-
I'm trying to decide between:
Devotchka on Friday
Bishop Allen on Sunday
Pela on Monday
I'm leaning toward either Pela or nothing (a 10 1/2 month old is actually more entertaining than most bands). Devotcka is a good live show, but I've seen them numerous times.
Anybody have an informed opinion on which they'd choose between those three if only choosing one?
-
Cut Copy
Devotchka
Cluster (are they hitting the stage last?)
-
Nothing definite, but these are all on my "maybe" list:
Thurs: 7 Door Sedan @ Red and the Black
Fri: Los Campesinos/The Aquarium/Pash @ Black Cat
Sat: Blowoff
Mon: Pela
-
I'm not too crazy about Bishop Allen or Pela and haven't seen Devotchka but like what I've heard from them so I'd pick them.
Cluster play at sunset and music goes until midnight so no, they're not playing last.
-
possibly bishop allen if i can motivate myself. saw their last show at the RnR and they sounded pretty good ...i was in the way back at an oversold RnR show so it was kind of hard to tell. glad they are playing the black cat this time around.
-
I might also check out Yo Majesty! at DC9 on Sunday.. hah.
-
Los Campesinos on Friday.
-
I guess the Sword/Torche tomorrow is a small possibility for me.
-
i was trying to decide between sword/torche and cut copy, then realized that i'm not here on thursday... so if anyone wants my sword/torch ticket, it's up for grabs. come get it in silver spring tonight or friendship heights tomorrow during the day (potentially at union station around 6'ish, depending which train i take).
otherwise, weekend = hoping that i can enjoy radiohead without needing an arch this time 'round.
-
the "jerry" guy from dark star orchestra at artomatic saturday nite with his own band, anyone interested?
-
anyone have 1 extra for cut copy / black kids?

Buck Hill
scoob dee...ba dum cha
-
Black Kids and Cut Copy at Sonar on Saturday. I wanted to do their BC show, but Saturday night is so much better for me to enjoy a show.
-
Cut Copy Thursday
Junior League Sat?
Bishop Allen Sun?
Advice for Friday??
Devotchka or Los Campesinos?
I haven't heard either in concert but my feeling is that Los Campesinos' nice studio sound won't carry well live while Devotchka's acoustic sound will carry nicely. Comments?
-
swell season in richmond on friday.
cheering mr. lily on in the capitol hil classic on sunday.
-
I'm going wine tasting on Saturday which will force me to miss the Dropkick Murphy's, and then smackette graduates from Medical School.

if only there was a day that could combine wine tasting and the dropkick murphys, instead of having to choose one over the other. . .lo, what a day that would be.

Swell Season - Mon @ Radio City
-
i found my ticket for tonight ... everyone can call off their searches ... thank you, all of you, for all of your hard work and effort, i'll never forget it
-
work needs me on site tomorrow, i'm now in DC tonight. so i'm back to cut copy vs. sword. seriously leaning towards cut copy... i'm more in the mood for dancing than headbanging, and BC is closer/more convenient that RnR. don't have a ticket tho.
anyone got an extra cut copy ticket?
my sword/torch is still up for grabs, if anyone wants to come get it in friendship heights.
-
Cut Copy is gonna be a blast. Saw them open for Simian Mobile Disco last April. What a bill. They were very, very impressive!
-
Is Floristree still at the same address it's always been at?

several websites (including last.fm (http://www.last.fm/venue/8820057)) seem to believe it's at 405 W Franklin St. never been there myself.
-
cut copy tore the house down, i haven't seen a crowd move like that at black cat maybe ever ... full 4-piece band, i wasn't expecting that, made it feel like a new order show in a small club ... really short set though, around 50 mins with encore
black kids disappointed a bit, but they have such high expectations, i kind of feel bad for them for how high the bar is that they have to jump over ... they were mixed really poorly for much of their set ... i'd say 3-4 songs sounded really good, the other 4-5 were pretty weak
the last two songs that i caught from mobius band sounded great, their drummer really killed it
-
oh, and that was the most self-consciously hipster crowd i've ever seen in DC ... i don't mean "i'm wearing a black t-shirt" hipster, i mean like painstakingly put-together day-glo outfits and 80s getups, like something you'd seen in williamsburg 4 years ago
-
Black Kids annoyed me. Dumb lyrics, too. "listen to your body tonight it's gonna treat you right". "i'm a limousine". WTF??!
Mobius Band were great! Cut Copy ruled. And I didn't mind that they used backing tracks to most songs.
-
Local H tonight.
-
Why, were they playing their ipods too loud on the Metro? Or throwing their KFC wrappers down on the ground?

The Swell Season in Baltimore Saturday. I've managed to get about 6 tickets for this show. 4 of them are floor seats, so I have at least 2 floor seats remaining.
If anyone is interested in wanting to see them for free (I'm not charging for the tickets. It's a karma thing, plus my birthday is on Monday and it's a nice thing to do~) you can email me at poetneko@mac.com. Not sure what the 3rd set of seats will be, except super cheap ie: free (as the normal seats are $45, the ones we purchased before I managed to win several). Otherwise we're going up to the balcony and upgrading some people in bad seats to the floor
I can't fucking wait. :D

Cool thanks. That's what I thought.

dammit. so pissed that i had to work late last night (really really late) and couldn't make it to the BC - sounds exactly like my kind of show. hoya even hooked me up with a free ticket, and i couldn't use it.

that's the last time i ever scramble to get you on a guest list :D

Anyone go to John Darnielle/Rock Plaza Central in NYC last night? Would appreciate a review of that.
-
I made it to the Long Blondes/Drug Rug show at the RnR Hotel. Not very fond of the new Long Blondes record, but the songs from the prior album were very good live. Plus, they actually smile and were very happy to be there...(unlike, Ladytron??)
Drug Rug were very impressive as well.
-
The DeVotchKa show was NPR'd:

Swell Season was one of the best shows I've seen in my entire life.
Plus, I got to meet Susan from Exit Clov outside... she's an amazingly lovely person =D

Anybody have a guess about set times for the Pela show tonight at RNR? Three bands, doors listed as 8 and showtime as 8:30.
-
8:30, 9:15, 10:15?
They've been good about starting/ending early on weeknights for a little while now.

I got there about a minute before they went on, and left before they presumably came back for the encore. I looked for you thinking you might be there, but didn't see you...
I thought they were good, musically. A bit carbon copyish of their recorded stuff, but still good. And quite passionate. The singer was a little offputting at times tough. Maybe it was his good looking frat boy looks combined with his quite dopey between song mumblings.
Maybe slightly wishing I had skipped Pela and went to Liam Finn tonight instead, but I'll most likely be at home watching American Idol tonight. Are you going to that one tonight?

Saw Swell Season last night at Radio City. It was easily one of the best shows Ive seen in a long time. They played for 2 hours and ended the night with a Van Morrison cover (the second Van Morrison cover of the night). Marketa did a cover with her sister from the movie Wicker Man in the 70's. Her whole family came to the show which was pretty cool. Theyre playing another show in Central Park that I wont be missing in Sept.
Falling Slowly was just beautiful. Once sounded incredible. Glen played one song with Interference, the opener. He talked a lot and told us about the meaning/story behind every song. It could have gone on forever.
-
Did he dwell on how swell it was to grind it up with an underage teen?

LOL. He *knows* he looks good.
Nah, not going to anything tonight. Saving my energy for Islands (Thursday) then Silver Mt.Zion/Vic Chesnutt (Friday).

i'd be there if i was in town. let us know how it is and how late a 4-band saturday night show goes...
-
Black Moth hit the stage at 12:45(!) and played til 1:30 am. The place was about 3/4 full...pretty impressive. I didn't know they have a lot of fans in DC. Great show, great visuals. I finally get to see what they looked like! I wasn't into Subtle, but the two Danish bands (Efterklang and Slaraffenland) were pretty good. Actually, Efterklang were pretty amazing (for fans of Sigur Ros and Broken Social Scene??)

I forgot that show was last night. Oops.
On the fence about Kemialliset Ystävät tonight.
-
Did you go to Silver Mt. Zion? I went to nap and got up at 10 pm last Friday. How was Vic Chesnutt?

I did and ASMZ were pretty stellar. They played a few new songs (as in not recorded yet), Mountains Made of Steam, 1 million died..., Could've Moved Mountains and Microphones in the Trees. Wasn't too into what I caught of Vic Chesnutt. Felt to me like he's someone you have to let grow on you.
