well?
-
the worst show i ever saw wasn't at 930 club it was at jaxx and the band was otep
the fucking bitch wouldn't shutup about the revolution and blah blah blah
but at 930 your friends enemies opened for dillinger escape plan and they were horrible
i felt the need to stuff a sock in the singer's mouth to get him to stop yelling like the little bitch that he is fuck that band
but dillinger and the locust fucking tore the place up
-
for an opening act, the worst was u.s. maple (they opened for pavement). . .
for the headliner. . .gorillaz.
-
Cat Power and her opener, Entrance
-
Tori Amos.
-
I have a friend whose major character flaw is an addiction to prog rock. Anyway, he dragged me and another friend to see Geoff Tate (of Queensryche) solo. The WORST show I've ever seen anywhere, period.
-
It's a toss up between Fatboy Slim and the Billy Bragg, "Let's kiss Guthries arse and sing his shite instead of my own great songs that mankie actually paid to listen to" tour.
-
Natalie Merchant
The Eels is a distant second.
-
aww...i thought the fatboy slim show was one of the best shows ive ever seen at 930.
-
Paddy Casey opening for the Pretenders. Sean Lennon was pretty bad too.
I didn't care for Spiritualized either. It sounded like they played the same song over and over again at a painful volume.

Remind me again what "show" there was to see when it was just some twat playing records?
I'll charge you $40 to come to my house every Saturday night and you can watch me put cd's in my stereo all night if you call that entertainment.
I'll even waive the service charge.
-
Liz Phair when she shared the bill with Jason Mraz. She wasn't the worst performer I'd seen, but I was the most disappointed I'd ever been. Then that Mraz fellow was just awful.
Only show I ever walked out (which I planned to stay for) was Cracker. Just not my cup of tea; can't say they were horrid, except to my ears...

She drives me BATTY. Can't stand the squirming/humping the piano bench bit.

Yes, Billy Bragg is so much better of a songwriter than Woddy Guthrie. That's why we sang "Help Save the Youth of America" when I was in grade school, and not "This Land is Your Land".

seems like the choices here are bands you just don't like or bands that just gave bad performances
Cat Power was just a horrible performance by an artist I like, worst music though was probably still her opener
worst band I have ever seen live was probably the first opener for Brian Jonestown Massacre at the Mojo, no idea what their name was

Nope, I love Liz Phair, and she played fine, I was just really disappointed in her shiny pop delivery and swagger. I shouldn't have gone...

Beta Band a couple years ago...the bass was so loud it made my girlfriend sick to her stomach (they were just coming off their summer tour with radiohead; the bull run washout) so I think they were used to cranking it up for outdoor arenas. I think we left early it was so disappointing. We both had earplugs on, too.
However, the Beta Band a year or two before that (which i actually got free tickets to through 9:30 and was only half full) was exceptional.

That was disappointing, I remember them doing a horrible version of She's the One.

i have to second the u.s. maple opening for pavement. maybe i just don't get them, but it was ugly.

galactic, similar situation. apparently even the hippies said it was a poor performance.
liz was pretty horrendous when i saw her in philly. now guyville just bums me out
-
The Radiohead show after the Tibetan Freedom Festival was terrible. So few people you could hear a pin drop.
-
DARKEST HOUR, opener for cursive.
also, OURS, opening for the wallflowers.
-
i don't recall cat power being too bad when she opened for gbv a few years back. but maybe my memory is being kind.

And her headset... ;)
An east coast band, Love Seed Mama Jump (friends love them, why, is unbeknownst to me). The sound was terrible and very loud.
Whoever opened years ago for Duncan Sheik (hush). They got his name wrong, title and words of one his songs wrong (they tried to cover it). They were barely audible and didn't know the words to their own songs. Have no idea where those two gents are.
Um, the lady who opened for Snow Patrol.
Bleu. I say, they blew.

This topic should have been limited to headliners. It's too easy to pick out bad opening acts; most of them are pretty bad.
-
At the old 930, My Bloody Valentine (whose album I liked) produced a wall of noise that was both excruciating (due to volume) and supremely dull (due to inability to distinguish any changes, let alone songs). At the new 930, but when it was WUST, the members of Flipper were pathetic -- they could barely play and clearly did not care -- after three or so songs only a handful of people in an audience of what had been hundreds were left.
-
Back when I use to work at the club, I saw some horrific shows. Everything, Emmet Swimming (most notably for how TRASHED the crowd got), the Bogmen...they were all the pits. I think the worst was God Street Wine with the Cravin' Dogs. I had to go the dressing room for the Cravin' Dogs, and the b.o. coming out of that room could have risen the dead. God Street Wine was probably the worst because they played for about 2 hours and they wouldn't leave their dressing room...so by the time I got home it was about 5:00 am I think. For various reasons I also had to suffer through Chumbawamba not once but TWICE!!!
As far as bands I wanted to see, the worst was probably the Jesus and Mary Chain's last tour in 1998. It was a disaster. They didn't want to be there, everything was falling apart (including amps). I walked out of Tricky once too...that was pretty sucky. Sonic Youth in 1998 was also really disappointing. They're pretty much a hit or miss band in concert, but most of the tiem they're good. When they're off though they are OFF. At the old club I would say the worst show was the Orb. That show just never got off the ground.
-
i love how two people mentioned u.s. maple. so predictable, especially on this board of (mostly) squares. i saw that tour in boston -- i wasn't going to go because i thought pavement sucked by then but i got a free ticket -- and the crowd booed during maple's set. i didn't take too much offense considering the amount of whitecaps and yuppies who just discovered pavement. maple's set made me a fan and they are one of my favorite bands right now, especially live. i thought pavement blew that night, except for the three pre-brighten the corners songs. and i love everything pavement did up until and including wowee zowee.
one of the main aspects of u.s. maple's performances is their antagonization of the audience, if the audience doesn't "get it". they're kind of like the locust in that regard.
since i work at the club, i will refrain from listing all the absolutely atrocious bands i've seen in the last year.
-
don't know if it was the worst... but it was pretty darn boring... The Cardigans w/ Kent could have stayed home and giggled the CD and gotten the same effect.
and i disagree about openers because there have been some stellar double bills... i.e. Supergrass and The Coral in fact the Coral were probably better than the headliner. Brendan Benson & White Stripes.

Totally have to agree there. Their first show was such a dissapointment, though it did lead to me meeting the clovette. Saw Rusted Root a few years ago and their were plain awful. Saw a show at hte old club with Oddfellows local 121(yeah, named after the REM song) or something like that. they blew too.
-
I agree. The Vines definitely takes the cake for me. I went expecting it to be decent at best and left with the impression that Craig Nicholls was mentally retarded. If their intention was to butcher their own songs beyond recognition, then mission accomplished.

He was just annoying. Telling the crowd to shut up, that they were being rude, threatening to leave - all of which just caused the crowd to start yelling things at him for the rest of the show.
He should have been thankful he was opening for a well known band in front of a sold-out crowd, rather than chastising the crowd. You're an unknown opening act. Get over yourself.

Yup, that one sucked so bad I totally forgot about it.

I know I'll get slammed for this, but John Cale (opening for The Creatures) - I believe it was the summer of 1998.
I just couldn't stand him.
Also, Jill Sobule (opening for Lloyd Cole). Though she did make me laugh. :)
The worst *experience* at a show at 9:30 was The Cult (can't recall when that gig was). The band themselves were fine - it was the audience that was psycho - full of testosterone/high-wired guys (I believe the ratio was something like 6 guys to 1 girl at that show) - including a guy who burned me with his cigarette and then said, "Why did you put out my cigarette?!"
Cheers
DJ Medusa.

He wasn't all that bad :D I particularly liked The Creatures encore of Venus in Furs that he got up onstage for.

The first that come to mind was Filter. Sooo trashed that Rich couldn't even sing. I think he hit one note all night.
Another would be Retardobot <sp> Just awful opening up for Genitorturers. I do recall Josh having to escort them out of the building for lighting a cardboard box on fire on the stage.
Finally, Echobrain. Jason Newstead's project of a jam band/didn't know what the hell they wanted to be. Just terrible which was a shame, since the CD wasn't too bad.
And there's nothing wrong with emmet swimming shows and lots of drunk people! :) It made a drunk Sam dive off the stage and land on his collarbone before he worked there LOL

The first time they played the club was in the summer of 2002, right after the first album came out. The album was decent for a first effort and nobody yet had a reason to believe they would be so bad.
-
Hooverphonic and Snowpony back in 98 or so was pretty bad. But the worst I've seen at the 930 would have to be Cornershop. They were filming for HBO. I've always liked whatever I've heard by them, but live they were boring.

There was no "SHOW", apart from those two slappers on the stage, but you get a couple of those in any given "DISCO" so don't count.
If you want to say it was fun, a laugh, enjoyable, a great atmoshpere, I'll accept. I might disagree with you, but will accept it. But never in a million years was it a "SHOW"

I was expecting something more than just someone playing records seeing as it was Fatboy Slim, you can get that in Crush in Adams Morgan every night of the week. Seeing as it was at the 930 I expected some type of performance..something like Stereo MC's did at the hfs'tival years ago. He's basically a DJ too but puts on a show mixing records with musicians, and it was excellent.

CAT POWER...definitely. I actually heckled Chan toward the end of the night after a horrendous cover of the White Stripes. I think she left the stage soon after, not returning to encore. Thank Christ! I would have thrown my beer bottle at her eventually. I really enjoyed her recorded stuff before that show and now I can't even bear to listen to it. She should definitely stick to the studio.

I forgot to mention Charlotte Martin, who opened for Paul Kelly a few months ago -- maudlin wailing and tuneless piano pounding at a volume that would make Lemmy cringe -- there is a circle in hell for Tori Amos and her acolytes.

On the topic of Fatboy slim and disco vs. show, did anyone else see Aphex Twin w/Death in Vegas and the Sneaker Pimps? That was one weird show. Aphex Twin had his laptop, a coffee table and a sofa, minimal lights...just him fiddling with his stuff, curled up on the sofa, and then after a while 2 overstuffed teddy bears dancing out onto the stage.

Worst Opener: Mindwar Symphony in November 2001
Worst Headliner: Deftones in May 2003. I could only 3 three songs from that entire show (Minevra, Change in the house of flys and Shut Up and Drive). I wish someone cranked Chino's mic up to 11 so I can here what the fuck he's saying.

I've never been a Pavement fan, and never seen them live...but my guess is that their audience got older, finished grad school, and got real jobs, jobs which allowed them to become "yuppies".
As opposed to your "a bunch of yuppies discovered Pavement" take on it.
As if indie rock fandom weren't completely populated by yuppies or people on the path to yuppiedom anyway...

another vote for badly drawn boy a few years ago (i'm assuming you mean with his whole band). brought some friends who'd never heard him, they left after about a half hour (during which he played maybe 1 1/2 coherent songs). a waste of everyone's time and money.
-
OK, i think the Vines were VERY VERY bad.
I saw Outkast put on a horrific show there back in 1998 or so. Cypress Hill (1999) was very very bad as well.
the worst band i think i have ever seen there, was probably, the band that opened for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Tall Boys i think it was. Man, i coulda killed them.
As for Fatboy Slim, why dont people get it. First off, i was involved with that show so i remember it well. Fatboy and his dj getup in the middle of the club was very cool and something i'd never seen there. And the stuff he was playing were his own dubplates of remixed songs and what not. Those were not records you can buy at the store or hear by someone else. If you noticed ALL the records in his crate were white with a number on them. anyway, i dont know what you expected him to do, mankie. summersaults? a strip tease?

Clubs are where you see live music. Discos are where they play pre-recorded music. Morrissey used "disco" and he was post-1980. Gotta go by what the Moz says.

MANY clubs and especially a one-off party (I wont say rave) had been charging $40 for admission. Of course, many of those were all night long with many DJs.
I think Nation charges like $20 on friday nights. which is ironically the same price for a long island iced tea there!
$40 seems reasonable for Fatboy though, since someone has to pay for his big bag of coke!

Keep in mind for these "one-off parties" that they're working with just an open space. Good example is UltraWorld. It was held at the DC Armory. So charging someone $40 to "just see someone play records" isn't exactly true. There's no lighting or sound system and those cost someone some money which needs to be made back. Not to mention paying the DJs to spin and rental of the space.

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Australian rock band the Vines, who have gained a reputation for delivering erratic performances, have backed out of their planned support spot on Incubus' summer North American tour, citing "mental and physical exhaustion."
The band was thrust into disarray following a recent performance for a Sydney radio station, when bassist Patrick Matthews walked out following the first song. A full show the next evening was promptly canceled.
"The decision has been made to take a break to deal with the mental and physical exhaustion issues the band currently face(s)," the group said in a statement. "The Vines have not broken up. The band would like to sincerely apologize to Incubus, our fans and friends. We would like to thank everyone close to us for the continued support."
Its trek with Incubus was due to begin June 24 in Atlantic City, N.J. The Vines would have been touring in support of their sophomore Capitol album, "Winning Days," which is off to a slow start. It debuted in April at No. 23 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 129,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its predecessor, "Highly Evolved," has moved 665,000 units.
The Vines recently toured North America as headliners of a package featuring fellow Aussies Jet and the Living End, though the main attraction appeared to be Jet, whose current album, "Get Born," has sold 865,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
