Fort Reno Park Closed Immediately and Indefinitely
Fort Reno Park, the site of an annual summer concert series that is one of D.C.'s most beloved and longest-running outdoor events, is closed immediately and indefinitely after United States Geological Survey satellite imaging reports found high levels of arsenic in the soil.
William Line, a spokesman for the National Park Service, said that the NPS would continue to work with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Agency to determine any public health risks and further courses of action. He refused to give any timetable for a possible reopening and said that to speculate would be irresponsible. Snow-fencing was erected around the perimeter of the park at 6 a.m. today.
The closing of the park raises questions about the fate of the Fort Reno Summer Concert Series, which was set to begin a twice-weekly series of free shows in mid-June. No list of artists of dates has been announced for 2008, but many of the city's most famous punk and indie rock bands have performed on Fort Reno's stage over the last 39 years, including Fugazi, the Dismemberment Plan, Ted Leo, Q and Not U and Velocity Girl.
We'll update this blog post with more information when we get it.

UPDATE: When contacted by phone, Fort Reno Summer Concert Series organizer Amanda MacKaye was caught completely off guard by the news. The NPS had indicated that groups with permits to use the park were notified of the closure, but apparently that wasn't the case quite yet. "It's almost comical in a way," MacKaye said. "Just this morning I was thinking how things were finally coming together, how we had a few shows lined up, and now this." She said she would provide further updates after speaking to her contacts within the NPS.

No, you're wrong. This is the end of the world.

DC needs fort reno. or at least those bands do... it's not as if they could get away with charging money.

Being a former AU student, I am just amazed how much NW 'high-end property' has been ruined by the breakdown of mustard gas.

well, i guess that's what happens when land that used to be testing ground and eventual dumping ground of various munitions, including barrels of mustard gas begin to leak.

I guess I should rephrase, I am surprised how much land was used for these purposes and how irresponsible they were with these projects to begin with. But it sucks, I lived near Ft. Reno and enjoyed cutting through there to get to Steak N Egg faster.

i guess you'll have to go elsewhere to see dischord/lovitt shows
-
that sucks - I was all set for a wee family outing to see Julie Ocean

What A Shame! I was working on an update version of updated version of this article I submitted last year on Associated Content. (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/224397/free_summer_concerts_series_in_the.html) I heard about in the blog log section of the Washington Post Express. Where are the concerts going to held, if the main venue is closed for an undetermined amount of time?

Wow, you're a big spender.

saw a sign this AM saying there'd be a community meeting over Fort Reno park today 5/20 @6pm with DC Councilpersons in the Chevy Chase Community Ctr. I can't get there in time but it'd be cool if a supporter of the concert series could go represent

Arsenic levels at Fort Reno look to be "safe."

I know that they are seeking a company based in Montana to test the levels to keep everything legit. However, I have to wonder if this "safe" declaration is to appease worried Wilson parents and homeowners in Tenleytown.

To be fair, it also included dinner at some Mexican joint in the neighborhood right after the free show.

shut the F up Julian. just because you aren't getting any doesn't mean you have to be so bitter all the time.
and yes, i'd have gone to this meeting if i had known about it six hours ago, and it wouldn't have been that ridiculous, because i live all of eight minutes away.
i don't see any point in making fun because i photograph for a local website. just doin' my job.
also, Youbebetty and the BYTards would be a sweet band name.

Prelim. results look more safer (http://dcist.com/2008/05/21/fort_reno_arsen.php) than originally thought.
-
WTOP reports today that the place is prob. ok. Safety fences are down, lawn is being mowed, and arsenic readings aren't as bad as thought. (Might be some lead though, but whatthehell...)
-
Jebus farkin crikey, as long as people dont get down on their hands and knees and eat the dirt, it's gonna be okay. Nobody ever suffered because of the oozing polychloryl biphenols (PCBs) that were the root of the old 930 Club's distinctive smell. Let the music play!

Oh I beg to differ...I am sure that was the cause of my headaches and slight (to sometimes intense) nausea the day after I'd been at shows there.
